Fox Nation vs. Reality: The U.S. Closes Imaginary Vatican City Embassy

In it’s ongoing struggle to find evermore outrageous atrocities to attribute to President Obama, Fox Nation has reported that Catholic groups are appalled that the United States is planning to close its embassy in Vatican City. There is just one little problem.

The United States does not have an embassy in Vatican City. Nor does any other country. The Vatican is simply too small to host any of these facilities, so they are actually headquartered in Rome. The truth of the matter is that the U.S. is closing one of its offices in Rome that houses the ambassador to the Vatican, and relocating it to a much larger compound that also houses the U.S. embassy to Italy. It will continue to have its own building and entrance, and its even a little closer to the Vatican itself.

This hasn’t stopped the right-wing media circus from hyperventilating furiously about some sort of imagined insult to Catholics. The Fox Nationalists, quoting from the “Moonie” Washington Times, which was quoting from Breitbart “made up” News, said that “The Obama administration, in what’s been called an egregious slap in the face to the Vatican, has moved to shut down the U.S. Embassy to the Holy See.” That actually goes even further into false territory because it doesn’t simply suggest a relocation, but an elimination, neither of which are true.

It is curious that this particular crockery should erupt in the days following a rather remarkable publication from the Pope that condemns unfettered capitalism as abusive to the poor and other excluded members of society that the church is duty bound to protect. The Pope even went so far as to repudiate the conservative gospel of “trickle-down economics” as a theory that “has never been confirmed by the facts.”

Could it be that the Pope’s unambiguous support for income equality and the moral principle that “all citizens have dignified work, education and healthcare,” has prompted the conservative fib factory to invent a new controversy as a distraction from a papal declaration that eviscerates conservative values?

  1. Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes and to infinity.

    • May I ask, respectfully, what is ‘income equality’ and how would it work?

      • Income inequality refers to the gap between the rich, the middle-class, and the poor. It starts with the fact that the 400 richest Americans control more wealth than the bottom 150 million of their fellow citizens combined. Here is some more info the subject.

Fairness is achieved by restructuring the economic and electoral systems that benefit the wealthy so that they are more responsive to the majority; by requiring the rich to pay their fair share of the costs of maintaining the nation’s economic well-being; and by providing people who work with at least a living wage. These measures would be a start, and they would end up benefiting everyone, including the rich.

        • Income inequality means there is an artificial barrier between the rich and the middle class and the middle class and the poor. It also means that the gap between the stages becomes increasingly bigger, while the size of the middle class becomes increasingly smaller, leaving simply a huge gap between rich and poor with no middle class step between them.

          • Funny – we actually agree – of course we generally agree on the ends – it’s the means to that end that brings up the disagreement.

  2. What, Fox hasn’t yet accused Obama of authorizing the building of a mosque to take its place? Scandalous…

(I know, I know, don’t give the Dittoheads an excuse to revolt, but this one was just too easy.)

  3. And of course, all of those tea-chugging, mindless minions — who only believe what News Corp and the right wing blogosphere tell them — will devour the (intentionally) misleading report and resist any effort by other news agencies to present a more accurate account of the news story.
To indignantly declare that you only trust news that you view on FOX News is akin to proclaiming that you only trust science that you read about in the Bible.

Bottom line: The dissemination of nonsensical rumors and inflammatory innuendo is a trademark of the fine journalistic professionalism exhibited by the talking bobble-heads employed by The Rupert.

    • hey, i drink tea! but i’m not insane.

  4. FOX News is so blinded by hate, it can’t even the facts straight!

    • There is a limerick like quality to your post.

    • If Faux Noise got any fact straight it would be by accident and they would immediately change the story to put another phony fact in the story to bury the real fact.

  5. Can you believe those right wing neocons??? They are so dam desperate to get something on the president that they will LIE ABOUT ANYTHING. Again they look like fools. Who is going to be canned this time??? Someone should be for telling a story that was and out and out lie. They can’t get anything on the president so they make shit up. Now they are involving the Pope because the Pope happen to say something that sounded like what President Obama represents and that is what the Pope represents, caring, people helping those less fortunate, taking care of the sick, the poor the elderly and this is not REPUKES concerns, just the president’s. The pukes have done everything to hurt the needy, the children, the poor and the POPE KNOWS IT. GOOD FOR THE POPE

  6. I consider myself on the conservative side of the middle. No one should get their news from one source. Other than communism and fascism there are valid points on both sides. While I believe in good jobs for all it’s not a right. You must work for the training to be in the work force. Income equality is not fair. For someone who has worked hard and had success should reap the rewards of their hard work and sacrifice. I don’t begrudge wealthy people the right to be wealthy. Goverent should not be in the business of “income equality” they should be in the business of defending our country, making laws and making sure we have an infrastructure that is unrivaled in the world, given the amount of taxes that are collected.

    • Income Equality means a livable minimum wage Chuckles. Here’s an example that may surprise you. In 1973 the minimum wage was $3.25 an hour. That in that year just before the “GAS Crunch” MADE UP BTW… you could buy 10 gallons of gas and 2 packs of smokes for 1 hours fair labor wage… What does the current min wage pay for and what do you see that wage being if it equaled the same quantity of goods it did in 1973. Now, We need add a COLA to the minimum wage so that people who are having to work at that wage can survive. The problem I see in your mind is a blindness to the facts please study the facts further you will probably change your mind a bit over a period of time if you have any intelligence what so ever…

  7. It’s no surprise if Fox’s news sources are unreliable, biased right-wing nutjob publications. I’ve worked for a real newspaper, and there were strict guidelines about news sources. Back in the day when integrity counted, a news agency didn’t want to compromise it’s veracity, or lie, either.

  8. Weird this is what the actual article says not sure why they change the facts here, oh that’s right this site does the same thing they claim Fox News does:

The Obama administration, in what’s been called an egregious slap in the face to the Vatican, has moved to shut down the U.S. Embassy to the Holy See — a free-standing facility — and relocate offices onto the grounds of the larger American Embassy in Italy.
