Cable News Trek: The Next Generation

Fox News has been reveling in their post-election ratings bump. By all appearances it is really just a pity party for the losers who are congregating at the Fox water cooler to assuage their misery. But I have to give them credit for having such unparalleled devotion to their demon host.

In the just released ratings for May, Fox retained its first place ranking. MSNBC moved solidly into second place. But there was some little noticed news that may whip up a little anxiety Fox programmers:

MSNBC is the #1 news network among younger viewers, Adults 18-34, in weekday primetime (93,000), M-Su primetime (89,000), and in M-Su sales prime (7 p.m.-2 a.m., 72,000). “Countdown with Keith Olbermann” was the #1 show at 8 p.m. in A18-34 (118,000).

This is a continuation of a trend wherein Fox is saddled with the oldest skewing audience in cable news. MSNBC, however, is winning amongst younger viewers, who are the future of the news consuming marketplace. That bodes well for MSNBC as this demographic group grows into the advertiser-favored 25-54 demo.

In the meantime, Fox can celebrate having cornered the market for aging political outcasts.

  1. Fox News retained its #1 spot, averaging more total viewers in Monday-Sunday primetime (1.959 million, up 24% over May 2008) than CNN (767,000, down 22%) and MSNBC (756,000, up 10%) combined. In the Monday-Sunday prime demo (A25-54), Fox News took first with an average of 463,000 viewers (up 30% over May 2008), again more than MSNBC (250,000, down 9%) and CNN (194,000, down 37%) combined.

Fox News claimed 9 of the top 10 programs in weekday primetime, with the “O’Reilly Factor” (2.989 million total viewers, 702,000 A25-54) leading the pack for the 102nd consecutive month. “Hannity” (2.165 million total viewers, 551,000 A25-54), “Glenn Beck” (1.962 million total viewers, 472,000 A25-54), “On the Record with Greta van Susteren” (1.814 million total viewers, 452,000 A25-54), and “Special Report with Bret Baier” (1.784 million total viewers, 392,000 A25-54) rounded out the top 5.

    • Thank you for regurgitating the obvious without any meaningful analysis. It still amounts to a pity party for losers.

Which would you rather have: the House, Senate and Presidency, or a top-rated cable TV news show that has fewer viewers than SpongeBob SquarePants? Also, the lowest-rated network news broadcast (NBC) has three times the viewers as the highest-rated Fox News program (O’Reilly). Revel in that.

  2. May 2009 was the first month since September 2006 that Keith Olbermann’s “Countdown” declined against the previous year in the A25-54 demo. In May 2009, Olbermann averaged 323,000 A25-54 viewers, down 21% from his primaries-fueled May 2008 average of 408,000 (though up considerably from May 2007’s average of 200,000).

  3. Settle down Mr. Angry Liberal… You try and make it sound like MSNBC is making a huge jump in viewers when it clearly isn’t. So if you don’t wanna talk about the numbers then don’t write a blog about it. Since you have the Presidency, Senate, and House, try and not sounding so bitter and angry. Without so many people watching Fox News what would you have to bitch about all the time? There are about 10 people that read your crazy ass blogs anyways. Smells like a little jealousy to me.

    • Wow – are you ever delusional.

Where are you picking up this “anger” from? And when did I make it sound like MSNBC made a huge jump? I merely reported facts which you haven’t bothered to dispute.

I do, however, appreciate you and my nine other readers visiting my lonely Internet outpost.

  4. Your pitiful attempt to put lipstick on this absolute PIG of a ratings disaster for all the leberal news networks by claiming MSNBC has more young viewers in the 25-54 demographic seems to be short sighted.

Kids are almost ALWAYS liberal to begin with and it is only as they grow and actually EXPERIENCE life they become aware of the empty emotion filled but base rhetoric of the Left as represented by Olbermann and Matthews.

The important point in these ratings is they are showing a GROWING lead, week after week by FOX NEWS while the ratings of MSNBC and CNN are DROPPING during these same periods. No amount of Liberal spin can change the truth.

  5. FAUX is the pig lathered in lipstick by the Cons. FAUX is not interested in reporting any news. They are clearly proven to be an opinion outlet the hard right gloms onto when the real world is just too tough to face, hence the reason their ratings have gone up since the election. The Cons know that FAUX will never report anything that could challenge their belief systems.
