{"id":320,"date":"2007-01-14T14:22:41","date_gmt":"2007-01-14T21:22:41","guid":{"rendered":"\/?p=320"},"modified":"2007-01-14T23:59:32","modified_gmt":"2007-01-15T06:59:32","slug":"ncmr2007-selected-treats","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newscorpse.com\/ncWP\/?p=320","title":{"rendered":"NCMR2007: Selected Treats"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For those of you who were not fortunate enough to attend the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.freepress.net\" target=\"_blank\">National Conference For Media Reform<\/a>, I have compiled a few moments that may be of interest.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jeff Cohen of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fair.org\" target=\"_blank\">Fairness and Accuracy in Media<\/a>:<\/strong><span style=\"color:#0d00d0;\">After pointing out some disturbing stats that prove that broadcast media favors right wing pundits and commentators, he itemized his three goals for reform.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Challenge the mainstream media to open up.<\/li>\n<li>Build independent and non-profit media. <\/li>\n<li>Structural reform of the Internet, promoting community access and preserving network neutrality.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Chellie Pingree of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.CommonCause.org\" target=\"_blank\">Common Cause<\/a>:<\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"color:#0d00d0;\">Chellie made the fascinating observation that when Jimmy Carter was asked to observe elections in the U. S. as he has done throughout the world, he had to decline because the U. S. did not meet the criteria for such observation. Specifically, that elections be run by non-partisans and there be national standards. Neither of which is true here.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Amy Goodman of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.DemocracyNow.org\" target=\"_blank\">Democracy Now:<\/a><\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"color:#0d00d0;\">Amy told a disturbing story of the Covey Plantation. Covey was a slave <em>&#8220;breaker&#8221;<\/em>. That is precisely what it sounds like. Slaves that were resistant or troublesome were sent to Covey for training. One of those was Frederick Douglass. Douglass escaped and made his way north and the rest is history. Except this bit of history that is not widely reported &#8211; the Covey Plantation is now the home of &#8230;  are you sitting down?&#8230; Don Rumsfeld!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/sanders.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sen. Bernie Sanders<\/a> (That felt good to type):<\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"color:#0d00d0;\">Bernie told us emphatically that, if you are concerned about foreign policy in Iraq; if you are concerned about health care; if you are concerned about the economy; if you are concerned about global warming; you are kidding yourselves if you are <strong>not<\/strong> concerned about corporate control of the media. And he reminded us that the media is just as responsible for the war in Iraq as Bush.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Norman Soloman of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.accuracy.org\" target=\"_blank\">Institute for Public Accuracy<\/a>:<\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"color:#0d00d0;\">Norman made the astute observation that the New York Times will correct misstatements of fact, but not statements like, <em>&#8220;The Bush adminstration is seeking democracy in Iraq,&#8221;<\/em> although it is just as untrue.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For those of you who were not fortunate enough to attend the National Conference For Media Reform, I have compiled a few moments that may be of interest.
