On Tuesday, June 10, 2025, California Governor Gavin Newsom delivered a speech<\/a><\/strong> in response to the unprecedented deployment of National Guard troops and Marines to unlawfully engage in law enforcement activities in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n

Trump’s orders, that violate both civil law and the Constitution, are further evidence of his craving to impose an authoritarian dictatorship in the United States, with him as the unchallenged and unchallengeable tyrant reigning over the demolition of democracy. He has lied repeatedly about the situation on the ground in L.A., claiming that the city was on fire and would be “completely obliterated”<\/em> if not for him. And he has maligned the leadership of its Democratic Mayor and Governor who were competently dealing with the protests. Trump even endorsed arresting Gov. Newsom.<\/p>\n

Newsom’s speech (video below)<\/em> was an inspiring rebuttal to Trump’s seething hatefulness, ignorance, and anti-Americanism. What follows is a part of the speech that spelled out some of Trump’s most egregiously abhorrent actions, along with the solution. Some highlighting was added, but no further commentary, because Newsom says it all pretty damn well.<\/p>\n

“This is a president who, in just over 140 days, has fired government watchdogs that could hold him accountable<\/strong>, accountable for corruption and fraud. He\u2019s declared a war, a war on culture, on history, on science, on knowledge itself. Databases quite literally are vanishing.<\/p>\n

“He\u2019s delegitimizing news organizations and he\u2019s assaulting the First Amendment<\/strong>, and the threat of defunding them. At threat, he\u2019s dictating what universities themselves can teach. He\u2019s targeting law firms and the judicial branch<\/strong> that are the foundations of an orderly and civil society. He\u2019s calling for a sitting governor to be arrested<\/strong> for no other reason than to, in his own words, ‘for getting elected.’<\/p>\n

“And we all know, this Saturday, he\u2019s ordering our American heroes, the United States military, and forcing them to put on a vulgar display to celebrate his birthday, just as other failed dictators have done<\/strong> in the past.<\/p>\n

“Look, this isn\u2019t just about protests here in Los Angeles.<\/strong> When Donald Trump sought blanket authority to commandeer the National Guard. he made that order apply to every state in this nation. This is about all of us. This is about you.<\/strong> California may be first, but it clearly will not end here. Other states are next. Democracy is next. Democracy is under assault right before our eyes.<\/strong><\/p>\n

“This moment we have feared has arrived.<\/strong> He\u2019s taking a wrecking ball, a wrecking ball to our founding fathers\u2019 historic project: three co-equal branches of independent government. There are no longer any checks and balances. Congress is nowhere to be found.<\/strong> Speaker Johnson has completely abdicated that responsibility.<\/p>\n

“The rule of law has increasingly been given way to the rule of Don<\/strong>. The founding fathers didn\u2019t live and die to see this kind of moment. It\u2019s time for all of us to stand up<\/strong>. […]<\/p>\n

“I know many of you are feeling deep anxiety, stress, and fear. But I want you to know that you are the antidote<\/strong> to that fear and that anxiety. What Donald Trump wants most is your fealty, your silence, to be complicit in this moment. Do not give into him<\/strong>.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
