There is an enduring lesson that Donald Trump is determined to pass on to the American people, and the world. That lesson is that it is never wise to underestimate just how pitifully stupid he is. <\/p>\n

Just when you think that Trump has done or said something that has to be as low as he could possibly go, he always manages to find a way to go even lower. Whether it’s about windmills causing cancer, or cutting drug prices by 1,200%, or making Canada the 51st state, Trump revels in his ignorance and the willingness of his glassy-eyed cult followers to accept it.<\/p>\n

The latest example of this Olympic-class asininity came Friday morning shortly after the Supreme Court struck down his inflationary tariffs<\/a><\/strong> as an unconstitutional tax on American businesses and consumers. In a 6-3 decision, the Court ruled that Trump’s tariffs are not permitted under the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) that he improperly cited as justification.<\/p>\n

This ruling is a rare rebuke from a Court that has been extraordinarily subservient to Trump. And in this matter they might have actually been doing him a favor. By undoing his ill-considered economic trade policies, the Court handed Trump an excuse to abandon the massively unpopular tariffs (64% disapproval)<\/a><\/strong> that have resulted in raising the costs of nearly everything that the American people buy. Ditching the tariffs could have brought those prices down, and Trump could have taken credit for it.<\/p>\n

But no! Trump’s immediate response, provided in a hastily scheduled press conference, was to do exactly the opposite. He announced that he would instead “sign an order to impose a 10% global tariff under Section 122, over and above our normal tariffs already being charged.”<\/em><\/p>\n
