The authoritarian aspirations of Donald Trump have been well documented. He began by inciting a violent insurrection on January 6, 2021, to retain power after losing the election. Followed by his pardoning of the seditious traitors who stormed the Capitol and assaulted police officers.

In the intervening years Trump has repeatedly demonstrated his ravenous hunger for power and his disrespect for the laws, including the Constitution, that was designed deliberately to limit it. He has assembled a Washington politburo that acquiesces to his every fascistic whim. Recently Trump lashed out at the media that he refers to in Stalinist terms as “the enemy of the people,” threatening to prohibit them from reporting honestly about him.
SEE THIS: Herr Trump Threatens to Muzzle the Free Press in His Unhinged Infomercial for Voter Suppression
Stridently continuing to goosestep down this path, Trump’s newly installed secretary of Homeland Security, Markwayne Mullin, held a press conference wherein he delivered some of the most disturbingly fascist remarks of the Trump era. Mullin was reiterating Trump’s message from his televised infomercial for his “Save America Act” (aka Voter Suppression Act) when he responded to a question about how he would react if states declined to go along with Trump’s unconstitutional decrees. Mullin ranted that…
“If the states choose not to participate in securing the elections, we will make sure that we make those states a priority, to look at who voted in their states, and hold them – the election officials – accountable. If the election officials, once we gave them the information they need to secure their elections, and they chose not to, then those individuals can also be held accountable. By fines, by penalties, and even depending on how far it goes, prison time.”
Let’s break down that bucket of bullshittery. First of all, the Elections Clause of the Constitution (Article I, Section 4, Clause 1) mandates that “The Times, Places and Manner of holding Elections for Senators and Representatives, shall be prescribed in each State by the Legislature thereof.” The executive branch of the federal government has no role in it.
Therefore, neither Trump nor Mullin can “look at who voted,” or “hold election officials accountable,” whether or not they chose to comply with legally unenforceable demands by the occupant of the White House or his flunkies.
The fact that Mullin is publicly threatening election officials with severe penalties, including potentially imprisonment, is one of the clearest signs yet of Trump’s intention to undermine democracy, dismiss the results of future elections, and declare himself president for life.
The election securing measures that Mullin is referring to have no basis in the law. They would require states to turn over their voter registration rolls with data including the voters’ names, addresses, party preferences, etc. Trump says that he would use this data to identify illegally registered immigrants. But his prior attempts at this have proven to be extraordinarily unreliable. Thousands of allegedly illegal registrants were in fact naturalized citizens whose records weren’t up to date in the files that Trump used.
The result is that Trump would improperly invalidate thousands of valid voters. Which is also the purpose of his Voter Suppression Act. He knows that he can’t win a free and fair election, so he is resorting to shrinking the electorate, and intimidating the state personnel who actually make the elections free and fair.
It’s notable that Trump’s complaints about election security have been replete with allegations of interference from Russia and China. But the only people he is threatening to punish are Democrats, American election officials, and the free press. Russia and China apparently have some sort of immunity.
Trump is just so far off from any rational response to the phony election crisis that he invented that he posted the following bizarre comment on his dedicated propaganda platform, Truth Social, reiterating the nonsense that he dispensed in his Voter Suppression Act infomercial.
Who wants to tell Trump that…? The documents he released are not new.? He was president "during the 2020 election cycle."? There was no compromise of election data. Everything he refers to was publicly available.? Registering to vote is not a "nefarious activity."
