The American economy is presently in what is called a “K-shaped economy,” wherein the rich are getting richer and the middle-class and poor are struggling to keep their heads above water. It’s a rather common situation during Republican administrations that favor the wealthy and corporations.

Under Donald Trump this economic disparity has gotten worse. But the only thing that you will ever hear from him and his MAGA cult cohorts is that things are fantastic because the stock market is rising. Never mind that most Americans have no market holdings to benefit from any of that. The delusions that plague Trump prevent him from seeing the economic realities. Or even the realities of his abysmal approval ratings…

On Sunday morning Trump’s Ministry of Propaganda (aka Fox News) went to work to shore up Trump’s standing on the economy that he has wrecked. The “Curvy Couch” potatoes of Fox and Friends welcomed their network colleague – and Fox’s Senior Trump-Fluffer – Maria Bartiromo to the program to fire up the gaslighting. Bartiromo engaged in the following exchange with the weekend co-hosts…

Griff Jenkins: So Maria, let me pick up on this past jobs report quickly and get your assessment on the fact that, you know, Trump is constantly talking about record markets you mentioned there, rising wages, and what we also see, fewer layoffs. But this week already we’re gonna be hearing Democrats about how horrible the economy is.
Bartiromo: That’s just propaganda. I mean, look, things are going well. And I think we all feel it. Look at where we are right now. You’ve got job creation. You’ve got economic growth. You’ve got $18 trillion of new investments. The president’s main priority has been to put America first […] But when you actually look at what’s going on, things feel pretty good. I’ve spoken with a number of CEOs who tell me that business is up, strongly. And it has to do partly with the “Big Beautiful Bill.”
Rachel Campos-Duffy: I hear you, and that’s all great news, and that’s what Americans need to hear. But what do you think is leading to the disconnect in maybe some voters and Americans not feeling that way? So why is that do you think?
Bartiromo: I think it’s messaging. I really do. I mean the Republicans need to do a better job of telling their story and communicating what the “Big Beautiful Bill” has done for earnings.

And there you have it! Let’s set aside for the time being that they were all lying that the recent jobs report was positive (there was a decline of 23,000 jobs), about rising wages (they are trailing inflation), and about fewer layoffs (which have exceeded 300,000 year to date). So no one should be surprised if Democrats speak to those facts.

Bartiromo’s response, however, was among the most reality-averse imaginable. She is pitching a preposterously rosy economy that includes such fallacies as Trump’s made up “$18 trillion of new investments,” and his “main priority…to put America first.” Which is only true if you believe that fighting a war in Iran, imposing inflationary tariffs throughout the world, and building vanity projects around D.C. are putting America first.

The most ridiculous part of Bartiromo’s commentary was her conclusion that “things feel pretty good” because she’s “spoken with a number of CEOs.” And who would know better than a bunch of rich corporate executives how it feels to be struggling to pay for groceries, gas, housing, healthcare, etc.?

What’s more, if the ungrateful American people who are complaining about such financial burdens were only subjected to better messaging – i.e. propaganda/gaslighting – they wouldn’t feel burdened at all. So maybe it’s time for Trump to have Congress pass another bill that they call the “Everything is Beautiful So STFU Bill.”

That should solve all of the problems that Trump and his MAGA Republican confederates are whining about. It will juice his approval ratings, and stop the electoral Blue Wave that’s coming in November. And it will accomplish all of that without having to actually do anything that actually helps anybody. So it fits the GOP playbook perfectly.
