As the midterm elections in November draw nearer, the desperation of Donald Trump and the Republican Party is spreading faster than an outbreak of measles at RFK Jr’s kiddie pool party. Every recent poll shows that Democrats are likely to come away with a majority in the House of Representatives, and have a good chance of doing the same in the Senate.

Ordinarily a party that is running as far behind as the GOP would reconsider their campaign strategy in order to appeal to a broader base of the electorate. But in this case the MAGA Republicans are so beholden to Trump and his unique brand of derangement that they are falling in line with his plan to alienate as many voters as possible by ignoring their needs and focusing on endless wars, vanity projects, and enriching himself. And Trump seems to think that his plan is working.

However, in a peculiar departure from his routine, Trump appears to have adopted some of the platform of the Democratic Party, and more specifically, the policies of progressive Democratic Socialists. In response to a question about the record profits recently reported by Exxon and Chevron, Trump replied that…

“They’re making too much money, based on a shortage, They’re making too much money. I don’t like it. And I should be the last one to say it because I’m a big free enterprise guy, nobody bigger. And you’re gonna see oil, when we’re finished with Iran, you’re gonna see the prices drop through the floor.

“But they made too much money. Chevron, too much money. ExxonMobil, too much. When you look at one company, where they made 12 times what they made the year before, they ought to give some of that back to the public. And they better cut the retail price, the consumer price.”

Trump is right. The oil companies are reporting record profits. And it isn’t just because the price of oil has gone up due to Trump’s illegal war against Iran. If prices were only rising due to supply issues, their profits would would remain stable. But they are raising their prices so much that they are generating higher profits, even while people are driving less because they can’t afford the gas. As reported by USA Today…

“ExxonMobil and Chevron last week reported massive second-quarter profits as a result of the war. ExxonMobil said it made $14.5 billion between April 1 through June, up from $7.1 billion in profits during the same time period in 2025. Chevron posted $12 billion in second-quarter profits, a 380% increase over the company’s $2.5 billion in earnings during the second quarter of 2025.”

Accusing corporations of gouging consumers, and calling on them to lower their prices to generate reasonable levels of profit, has long been the policy of Democrats. And whenever Democrats proposed it, Republicans – including Trump – would condemn them as socialists and/or communists. But now that Democratic Socialists are understandably appealing to an ever greater proportion of the electorate, Trump is trying to grab some of that glory for himself.

It’s not going to work. Trump and his MAGA-tist Party have been lambasting Democrats over this for far too long. They can’t just slither in and pretend that they have been for this all along. And by trying to fool the American people this way, he is just letting them know how stupid he thinks they are.

Although Trump himself has been leaning toward some of the worst aspects communism for months. He is the one who has been implementing communist-like control over the “means of production” by taking a role in corporate mergers, demanding multimillion dollar payments from corporations seeking government favors, and forcing corporations to sell parts of the businesses to the government. His mentor, Vladimir Putin, must be so proud.

Trump and company are still, however, opposed to all of the best parts of the Democratic Socialist agenda, which are broadly popular and in the mainstream of American politics. They including things like Social Security, interstate highways, public libraries, Obamacare, and more. And if you need further proof of the Trumpian hypocrisy, check out his comment today on his failing Twitter ripoff, Truth Social, wherein he is advocating on behalf of oil companies and the fossil fuel industry so that they can gouge even more profits from struggling Americans…

Trump posted an insane, 27 multi-threaded post on Truth Social of a 7 month old op-ed with the 20 "best" actions he took in 2025.They were all either lies or never actually happened. But this one was particularly ridiculous. He's bragging about things he did to destroy the environment.
