The steamy romance between Donald Trump and his favorite authoritarian dictator (besides himself), Vladimir Putin, has been a staple of the gossip rags for years. Trump is hopelessly infatuated with the Russian tyrant who can do no wrong in Trump’s eyes. Throughout his occupation of the White House, Trump has never uttered an unkind word about his hero and mentor.

No matter what is happening on the ground, Trump praises Putin and viciously maligns anyone who dares to oppose him. For instance, Trump heralds the savage invader Putin as a peacemaker, while castigating Ukrainian President Zelenskyy as a dictator who wants the war, that is slaughtering his people, to continue. But despite Trump’s slobbering fealty to Putin, the feeling is not mutual. Putin recently mocked Trump’s vanity birthday parade…

On Monday morning Trump arrived in Canada for a meeting of the G7 nations. Naturally, he established himself as the pariah of the group in an early press avail with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. In the few minutes that they spoke to the press Trump managed to insult his hosts and lie profusely about why Russia wasn’t there…
“Putin speaks to me, he doesn’t speak to anybody else, because he was very insulted when he got thrown out of the G8. As you would be. As I would be. He was very insulted. He was thrown out by Trudeau, who convinced one or two people, along with Obama. He was thrown out and he’s not a happy person about it, I can tell you that. He doesn’t even speak to the people who threw him out. And I agree with him.”

It’s rather chilling that Trump boasts of his alliance with Putin as if he were his public relations agent and the only path to communicating with him. But it’s typical that Trump shows concern for Putin’s hurt feelings. If Putin felt insulted by being ousted from the G7, maybe he shouldn’t have invaded a peaceful neighboring country.
What’s more, Trump is displaying either his dishonesty or his ignorance or his ignorant dishonesty, when he complains about former PM Justin Trudeau throwing Putin out of the G7. Because in 2014 when Russia was ousted from the group, the Conservative Party’s Stephen Harper was the Canadian PM. And Obama didn’t need to be convinced to cast Russia out. He was a leader of the initiative. Finally, it wasn’t “one or two people” who wanted Russia removed. It was a unanimous decision by all seven of the other member nations.
Then, after lying about Trudeau, Obama, and the G7, Trump repeated his frequent lie that “you wouldn’t have a war right now if you had Russia in. And you wouldn’t have a war right now if I were president four years ago.” He says that about virtually every international incident from Ukraine, to Gaza, to Iran, and more. Never mind that his own words contradict that egocentric nonsense…

Trump’s confession that Putin speaks through him obviates the need for Putin to be readmitted to the G7. Why bother if Trump is there to speak for him? And no one is more devoted to the interests of Putin and Russia than Trump himself. So before Putin goes back into the G7, he should go to The Hague and be tried for war crimes. And Trump can go along as his defense counsel – or co-defendant.
