Stephen Colbert Delivers a Hilarious Acceptance/Farewell Speech at Writers Guild Award Ceremony

The 78th Annual Writers Guild of America’s annual awards ceremony was held Sunday night in New York City. Among the recipients was Stephen Colbert, whose CBS “Late Night” program was recently canceled amid a controversial ownership shake up that put the network into the hands of Trump-friendly billionaires, David and Larry Ellison. Its final episode will air on May 21, 2026.

Colbert was honored with the prestigious and rarely presented “Walter Bernstein Award” that is presented to a Guild member who has “demonstrated with creativity, grace and bravery a willingness to confront social injustice in the face of adversity.” There is no one who better exemplifies those principles than Colbert. Particularly at this point in his career. Although the punishment meted out by his corporate bosses might have backfired on them…

Robert Smigel (Saturday Night Live, Conan O’Brien, Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, etc.) gave Colbert a lengthy and entertaining, anecdote-laden introduction, reminding the audience of Colbert’s work on many programs, including The Dana Carvey Show, Strangers With Candy, The Daily Show, and The Colbert Report. Then he brought Colbert to the podium for his acceptance speech, who led off with a bit of the back story on the award’s namesake. (Colbert begins at about 14:00)

“Thank you for the honor of the Walter Bernstein award. Bernstein was a brilliant writer and, as you know, was Blacklisted. I did a little research, and as I did research I discovered – I don’t know why I didn’t know this – it dawned on me that the Blacklist was not a government policy. The Blacklist wasn’t a law or a regulation or an executive order. It was a voluntary industry-wide agreement to deny work to left-leaning artists out of fear that certain members of the government might publicly attack the parent corporation of these artists for the union that they belong to. It was that threat, only the threat, of trouble, that ended so many careers.”

Colbert was quick to note that he didn’t believe that he had been subject to anything on the level of the 1950.s Blacklisting. Adding that “As far as I can tell, no one in late night is fomenting a revolution.” Then delivering the best line of the night…

“As we know, the revolution will not be televised. It was going to be televised, but then Paramount bought it. Evidently, the revolution was losing, like, $40 million a year. It had to go. I guess the revolution is thinking about starting a Substack.”

Colbert spent a good portion of his speech praising his writing staff, and even pitching for them to be hired after his show ends. He named them all with short personal “tributes” punctuated with fun facts about each one. He also went through a number of jokes that didn’t make it to the air. They included jabs at the Dobbs decision to repeal abortion rights, Kristi Noem’s alleged affair with aide Corey Lewandowski, Trump’s incestuous comments toward his daughter Ivanka, Melania meeting the Pope, and a profane reference to a McDonalds tag line.

All in all, it was an entertaining night of humor and history and a well deserved tribute to a comedy legend. Consequently, we can expect a full blown meltdown by Donald Trump whose aversion to comedy in general, and hatred for Colbert in particular, is well known…

Disgraced CBS News Is Intent On Keeping a Known Jeffrey Epstein Associate On Its News Team

One of the core missions of Donald Trump in his second occupation of the White House has been the total subjugation of the free press. He has assaulted it with retributive prosecutions, meritless lawsuits, and always infantile insults aimed at honest journalists (mostly women) who had the audacity to report the truth about him.

Sadly, Trump has had some success in that brazenly fascist undertaking due to the cowardice and/or complicity of some the big media conglomerates who feared Trump’s retribution or who were feebly seeking favor from the corrupt and self-serving Trump regime. Their subservience has been evident in their groveling concessions to settle ludicrous legal disputes by paying millions of dollars in phony damages – aka bribes. And none has more obviously knelt down to Herr Trump than the toadies at Paramount.

Now CBS has embarked on a new and more insidious scandal involving a sleazy “doctor,” Peter Attia, with known ties to child sex trafficker, Jeffrey Epstein, that he admits. CBS is owned by Paramount, which in turn is owned by Trump’s buddy and fellow billionaire, Larry Ellison. His corporate monolith is now seeking, via a hostile stock bid, to acquire Warner Bros Discovery, which owns, among other things, CNN. Trump has already given his blessing to that proposed merger, despite the fact that Warner has accepted an offer from Netflix. Perhaps that’s because Ellison promised to make changes that Trump wants.

Shortly after Ellison merged his company with Skydance Media, owned by his son, David, they installed the notoriously right-wing blogger, Bari Weiss, to run CBS News, even though she had zero experience or qualifications to assume that position. Her brief tenure has already seen her make some abhorrent decisions, including censoring CBS’ 60 Minutes by nixing a segment on the El Salvador torture camp that Trump has been sending migrants to.

A few weeks ago Weiss announced that she was going to hire a bunch of MAGA-tized cronies from her Internet website to join CBS News. Among them was the disreputable “doctor” Attia. But that announcement was quickly marred by a revelation that ought to have doomed his appointment. According to The Guardian…

“Two weeks after a trove of files revealed extensive – and inappropriate – communications between Jeffrey Epstein and a recently named CBS News contributor, the longevity expert Peter Attia, the network appears to have settled on keeping him. […] Attia is one of the 19 on-air contributors that editor-in-chief Bari Weiss said she was ‘so excited’ to announce.” […]

“[O]n 30 January, the justice department’s release of millions of documents showed that Attia had expressed a fondness for Epstein and used extremely graphic language in at least one email to him. That Attia had met with Epstein was previously known before CBS News hired him.”

Attia’s name appears in the Epstein files more than 1,800 times. His emails to Epstein express his unsettling affection for him, as well as his creepy concern that he “can’t tell a soul” about their unsavory friendship. He also recalls that he felt “spoiled after staying in your great place.” And yet, Attia defended the relationship saying that “I was not involved in any criminal activity.” Nevertheless, he went on to say that “I apologize and regret putting myself in a position where emails, some of them embarrassing, tasteless, and indefensible, are now public.”

Notice that Attia is defending what he just called indefensible. And it appears that the only problem he has with any of it is that it became public. How Weiss and the Ellisons can continue to justify the hiring of this slimeball is incomprehensible. But it is consistent with the immorality that is the hallmark of the Era of Trump and the aversion to ethics that Trump represents and for which he is the role model of indecency. So Attia will fit right in.

UPDATE: Attia has quietly resigned from CBS News following the pressure from a broad array of bipartisan critics. Keep up the pressure on the MAGA media and all things Trump. IT WORKS!

Herr Trump Is Trying to Quash the Netflix Deal to Buy Warner Bros as a Favor to His Oligarch Pals

The boots of Donald Trump – swollen cankles, bone spurred feet and all – are once again stomping down on matters where they don’t belong. They have already trampled on everything from the Kennedy Center, to the Caribbean shores of Venezuela, to American cities with Democratic leaders that he regards as “the enemy within.”

The latest victim of Trump’s tromping is the pending merger of media giants Warner Bros Discovery (WBD) and Netflix. The WBD board has already accepted the bid from Netflix that it deemed superior to the one by the Paramount-Skydance conglomerate. But unsatisfied with not having having his tiny thumb pressed firmly into the pie, Trump is openly lobbying against Netflix. That wouldn’t be because his friends David and Larry Ellison are the owners of Paramount and have promised to make make changes that Trump wants, would it?

Setting aside the fact that it is both legally and ethically improper for Trump to interfere with the business affairs of these companies in a free market economy, Trump’s favoritism is transparently biased and aimed at benefitting himself and his wealthy comrades. On Sunday he posted a comment on his failing Twitter ripoff, Truth Social, that said simply “Stop the Netflix Cultural Takeover.” The post linked to an article disparaging the pending merger on the ultra right-wing website, One America News Network (OAN), by disgraced attorney John M. Pierce. The article said that…

“Netflix’s bid to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) is not simply another Hollywood deal. It is an attempt to consolidate unprecedented cultural power inside one of America’s most ideologically aggressive corporations — a company that has repeatedly used its global platform to elevate progressive narratives while suppressing dissenting viewpoints.”

That is, to use a technical term, bullshit! There is no evidence that Netflix has any political ideology, much less one that is “aggressive” and is “suppressing dissenting viewpoints.” That’s an opinion that even Trump disagrees with. Trump recently met with Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos in the Oval Office and came away saying that Sarandos is “fantastic” and that “I have a lot of respect for him. He is a great person.”

The article’s main argument against the Netflix/WBD merger is that it would would weaken competition. That’s true, But it’s just as true – if not worse – if WBD were to merge with Paramount. The article’s position that WBD accepted the Netflix bid due to some ideological bias is ridiculous. First of all because the Netflix bid is markedly better. Secondly because the real bias would be if the Trump regime forced Netflix to accept the bid from Paramount, whose owners are devoted Trump fluffers. Then the article claimed that…

“Handing this machine control over Warner’s franchises and future output would allow one company to rewrite characters, retell history, redefine social norms, and control which ideas reach audiences. […] It is time to say no to a woke media monopoly before the damage becomes impossible to reverse.”

For the record, Paramount would be the “machine” that could “control which ideas reach audiences.” It already owns Paramount Pictures, Paramount Television, CBS Entertainment, CBS News, Showtime, MTV, Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, TV Land, BET, Country Music Television, and 46 owned-and-operated TV stations across the country. Netflix is primarily a program producer and distributor. It doesn’t own any TV stations or, more importantly and unlike Paramount, any news networks.

Paramount has already demonstrated that it will bend the knee to Trump in its CBS News reporting. They recently censored CBS’ 60 Minutes, nixing a segment on the El Salvador gulag that Trump has been sending migrants to. They hired a right-wing blogger, Bari Weiss, to run their nightly news program with a decidedly more conservative bent. And they also canceled Stephen Colbert’s top rated late night comedy program. Just think what they would do if they acquired CNN, which is currently owned by Warner Bros and would be part of the merger with Paramount, but not with Netflix.

This would be a good time to examine the character of the OAN article’s author, John M. Pierce. He is an disreputable attorney with a long history of supporting Trump. He has been accused of making “threats against Department of Justice personnel.” And in September of 2021 NPR reported that…

“Pierce, a controversial lawyer with pro-Trump politics, has taken on more defendants related to the [January 6th] Capitol breach than any other attorney.”

[And that] “Court records from his divorce show that he has dealt with substance abuse and mental health problems for several years. His ex-wife has previously obtained two domestic violence restraining orders against him.”

That’s the caliber of author recruited by OAN to write this article attacking Netflix. And it’s why the article is so blatantly biased and counterfactual. There are some good reasons to oppose a WBD merger with either Netflix or Paramount. Corporate consolidation often harms both consumers and employees. But in this case the author leans heavily to one side, which invalidates his arguments entirely.

In the final analysis, Paramount would be far worse than Netflix as a partner for Warner Bros. It would cater to the whims of Trump, and deliver more conservative programming in both the entertainment and news divisions. And Trump’s cheerleading for Paramount is further proof of his bias and ignorance of proper conduct as president.

Crybaby Trump Pummels His Pals at Paramount and CBS for Daring to Interview Marjorie Taylor Greene

In the fall of 2024, the CBS News program, 60 Minutes, interviewed Democratic presidential candidate Vice-President Kamala Harris. Shortly after the interview aired, Donald Trump complained that 60 Minutes had edited the interview in a manner that was egregiously unfair to Trump and amounted to defamation. Never mind that the editing was proper and routine and done solely for time and clarity.

Despite having no rational argument, Trump sued the network, and in July of 2025 Paramount agreed to a $16 million settlement that was nothing more than submitting to a mob boss style extortion from Trump who was threatening to obstruct Paramount’s hopes of completing a merger with another big media firm.

On Monday morning Trump posted a comment on his dedicated propaganda platform, Truth Social, that proves that there is no satisfying a bully. Tucked away in his hallmark diarhetorical™ rant against a new 60 Minutes interview of MAGA Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, Trump lashed out at CBS and Paramount, who he whined should never “allow a show like this to air.” As if he is the programming authority who gets to make those decisions for every network.

In this case, what triggered Trump was likely Greene’s characterization of him as a subject of ridicule. Which is something you would think he would be used to by now…

Greene: Yes. It would shock people. I watched many of my colleagues go from making fun of him – making fun of how he talks, making fun of me constantly for supporting him – to when he won the primary in 2024, they all started kissing his ass and put on a MAGA hat for the first time.

Trump’s online acrimony began with some of his typically misogynistic insults aimed at both Greene and CBS journalist Leslie Stahl, saying that, “The only reason Marjorie ‘Traitor’ Brown (Green turns Brown under stress!) went BAD is that she was JILTED by the President of the United States.” Then he babbled that Stahl is a “washed up, Trump hating, 60 Minutes ‘correspondent.'”

Only after unleashing that hateful invective did Trump get down to what he says he was really upset about. Bearing in mind that Paramount is once again hoping to complete another big merger, this time to acquire Warner Bros/Discovery.

“My real problem with the show, however, wasn’t the low IQ traitor, it was that the new ownership of 60 Minutes, Paramount, would allow a show like this to air. THEY ARE NO BETTER THAN THE OLD OWNERSHIP, who just paid me millions of Dollars for FAKE REPORTING about your favorite President, ME! Since they bought it, 60 Minutes has actually gotten WORSE! […] I hereby demand a complete and total APOLOGY.”

This is incontrovertible evidence of how pointless it is to capitulate to Trump. He is insatiable. And the only thing that he learns from capitulation is that you are weak and ripe for endless exploitation. Whether you are a media enterprise, or a university, or a law firm, or a political flunky, you are forever his property and must do his bidding – or else!

Settling with Trump will never be sufficient to pacify him. It will only make him want more. He will demand total control over everything you do or say in perpetuity. And should you fail to obey, you will be subject once again to his unbridled wrath. Why anyone is still afraid of that is a mystery, and worse, it’s a mark of shame on them for their cowardice.
