Just when you thought that the bar for presidential corruption couldn’t get any lower. Donald Trump demonstrates that he doesn’t know the meaning of the word “bottom.” Or most other words with two syllables or more.

Earlier this year Trump filed a $10 billion lawsuit against the IRS to pay him reparations for alleged damages from the leaking of his tax returns that revealed that he paid little or taxes for several years. Of course the real victims were the American people who Trump was shortchanging for the fair share of taxes that he owed.
Now Trump’s “Justice” Department is dropping that lawsuit in exchange for creating a $1.776 billion slush fund (get it? 1776?) to compensate the convicted rioters and cop beaters who stormed the Capitol on January 6, 2021, and who he later pardoned. It’s an idea he has been talking about for at least a year.

Trump is calling this his “Anti-Weaponization Fund,” a name that doesn’t really describe the nefarious purposes that it was created for. What Trump means by “weaponization” is any activity that criticizes or interferes with his aspirations of authoritarian rule. The Justice Department outlined the fund saying that…
“The U.S. Department of Justice today announced that as a part of the settlement agreement in President Donald J. Trump v. Internal Revenue Service, the Attorney General established ‘The Anti-Weaponization Fund’ to provide a systematic process to hear and redress claims of others who suffered weaponization and lawfare.” […]
“Per the settlement, plaintiffs will receive a formal apology but no monetary payment or damages of any kind. They have agreed, in exchange for the creation of this fund, to drop their pending lawsuit with prejudice, and also withdraw two administrative claims including for damages resulting from the unlawful raid of Mar-a-Lago and the Russia-collusion hoax.”
The fund, which is already facing challenges in court by Democrats, was manufactured by Trump’s Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, who has also served as Trump’s personal criminal defense lawyer. Blanche will also be administering the “systematic process” referenced in the announcement. I’m sure he’ll be fair. Right? RIGHT?
Furthermore, the references to an “unlawful raid of Mar-a-Lago and the Russia-collusion hoax” are purely Trump’s conspiracy theory lies that provide no legal foundation for any sort of compensation.
Trump’s lawsuit against the IRS, over which he presides, posed a flagrant conflict of ?interest wherein he was effectively suing himself. Trump is now settling with himself just nine before the judge hearing his case was going to rule on whether to dismiss it for its obvious conflicts.
Trump is sending a crystal clear message to those criminals, and those would-be criminals in the future, that he will shield them from any legal liability for their crimes. That message is: TREASON PAYS! If you are a staunch devotee of the Cult of Trump who is willing to break the law and threaten the lives of American citizens, soldiers, law enforcement officers, and congressional representatives, there is a place for you in the ranks of the StormTrumpers. And you may even be able to profit from it.
Making matters worse, it is taxpayers who will be footing the bill for this fund. Which means that all of us will be financing the activities of convicted seditionists and traitors-in-training who seek to undermine democracy. For this and other reasons, the settlement has the typical stench of lawlessness and incompetence that is emblematic of the Trump legal team. The announcement also declared that…
“The Fund will have the power to issue formal apologies and monetary relief owed to claimants. Submission of a claim is voluntary. There are no partisan requirements to file a claim. […] The Fund shall cease processing claims no later than December 1, 2028.”
Note that the expiration date for filing claims is one month before Trump’s term ends. That would prevent any subsequent Democratic president from having any decision making authority over new claims. However, by specifying that “There are no partisan requirements to file a claim,” Trump is leaving open the possibility of Democrats filing claims for compensation for damages due to Trump’s weaponizing of the Justice Department and other agencies of his regime. Democrats should take full advantage of that opportunity.
Those who have been investigated and/or indicted by Trump’s DoJ on phony charges can all file claims. They include Senators Mark Kelly, Elissa Slotkin, and Adam Schiff; political officials James Comey, Letitia James, Jack Smith, Jerome Powell, and John Brennan; journalists and media companies; and every immigrant, citizens or otherwise, who were subject to harassment, incarceration, and/or deportation, by Trump’s ICE thugs. And that’s an abridged list.
So as long as Trump is opening this door, Democrats should leap through it. Not that they can expect to get positive resolutions from Trump’s appointed flunkies, but they can keep the wheels from turning by overloading the fund’s capacity to function efficiently. Hopefully, none of that will be necessary if the legal challenges to the fund succeed. But just in case…
