It’s hard to wake up on the morning after America affirmed the worst speculation about its character and commitment to principle. But it’s impossible to stay asleep indefinitely. And so we awake with questions: What Is America? Who votes for this?

The person that a majority of voters chose to return to the White House, Donald Trump, has a resume of ill repute that is beyond anything imagined in the darkest dystopian fiction. For instance, he…
- Bragged about grabbing women by the p*ssy.
- Cheated on all three of his wives.
- Had multiple bankruptcies and failed businesses.
- Extorted a foreign president in order to dig up dirt on a political opponent.
- Maligned migrants as criminals and rapists.
- Mismanaged the COVID Pandemic causing hundreds of thousands of avoidable deaths.
- Was impeached twice.
- Disparaged the media as “the enemy of the people.”
- Was convicted of 34 felonies, with 54 more pending.
- Incited a violent insurrection and attempted coup.
- Added $7 trillion to the national debt.
- Is a pathological liar.
- Was repudiated by his closest associates as a moron, and a fascist, and more.
- Stole and hoarded hundreds of classified documents and lied to the FBI about having them.
- Appointed three Supreme Court justices who overturned Roe v Wade and granted him immunity for crimes.
- Was found liable for financial fraud, ordered to pay $454 million.
- Adjudicated as a rapist.
- Called fallen soldiers “suckers and losers.”
- Embraced foreign dictators and praised Hitler.
And Trump has now won reelection over his opponent, Kamala Harris, who was deemed unacceptable due to her being an extraordinarily well qualified Black woman with a sterling reputation and resume.
So What Is America? Who votes for this? It can be spun a hundred ways, but there is no rational explanation. There is little point in rashly casting blame or manufacturing excuses. It may just be that fear and hate can be more powerful motivators than hope and unity. Certainly the media failed us on a grand scale. However, the bottom line is that enough voters actually wanted this to happen, so it did. And that’s a nauseating statement about where and who we are.
Trump’s “Day One” agenda is a nightmarish collection of the wish lists of brutal, oppressive totalitarians. It includes…
- Mass incarcerations and deportations.
- More tax cuts for corporations and the wealthy.
- Abandonment of Ukraine and our NATO allies.
- Repealing ObamaCare and obstructing access to reproductive healthcare.
- Cuts to funding for climate change and environmental programs.
- Ending equity initiatives such as CRT and DEI and measures benefitting minorities, women, and LGBTQ+.
- Pardoning January 6th insurrections who attacked the Capital and assaulted Police officers.
- Imposing tariffs on foreign goods that will burden Americans.
- Weaponization the Justice Department to attack judges and political critics.
- And suppression of the free press.
That isn’t exactly something to look forward to. There will be talk about regrouping for the battles ahead and redoubling commitments to progressive ideals. But more immediately there will be shock, and disgust, and confusion as to how such an unthinkable outcome could befall a great nation founded on liberty for all.
And working through that will not be easy. Nevertheless, it will be done in time. And citizens who cherish democracy will rise to the occasion. With heavy hearts, concern for the future, and love for our families and neighbors, we will go on. But we may need some time to heal and digest the magnitude of the struggle before us. Because absorbing the results of the 2024 election requires answering a couple of challenging questions: What Is America? Who votes for this?

Don’t forget he, or rather his handlers, plan to replace all government civil employees with their own handpicked ideologues, who are bound to be mean, corrupt grifters; looking to rise in the ranks of corrupt grifters, not serve the public or the country.
Has said that he will hire people who sign a loyalty pledge to him, and only him, not to the USA or the Constitution. That applies to the military too. Let’s see — Elon Musk thinks he will be in charge of hiring and firing anyone he deems unappreciative of Dear Leader. Trump plans to put RFK Jr. — a medical conspiracy theorist –believes he will be in charge of federal health agencies. I had to look up a listing of them — there are ones I would never have thought were health agencies. DOL, EPA HICPAC, CMS, FDA, AHRQ, CDC, NIH, CCID, DHOP, NIAID, IOM. RFK Jr. does not believe vaccines help people. He does not believe drugs help people. Neither does his boss. What about those who have to go through weekly kidney dialysis; diabetics; people victims of polio; people victims of encephalitis epidemics (I’m one; I have medication take in order to keep my seizures to a minimum – about 11 pills a day. For the rest of my life); mumps, measles, chicken pox (later known as shingles) are making a comeback. And COVID was identified by its symptoms. It is an old disease –plague.
Well, people that HATE this country. That’s who votes for an adjudicated rapist, traitor and convicted felon.
Who votes for this indeed??!! Why did we have to tell the world “we’re exactly who you thought we were”.? Voting for a convicted felon over a smart, talented civil servant and attorney, who was then our VP. We need to get over this businessman for president; the US is not a company, there is no CEO and Board of Directors, and the citizens of this country are not shareholders. We should stick to someone who already knows government, how to govern and how to legislate, rather than elect someone who has to learn on the job.
