The Trump Regime Wants to Abolish Judicial Review and the Constitution’s Separation of Powers

The reprise of Donald Trump’s occupation of the White House is extraordinarily significant from a historical perspective. Setting aside his appallingly apparent lust for authoritarian power (which we shouldn’t do), he has achieved a few firsts that the American people must not diminish or forget.

For instance, Trump is the first convicted felon to be elected president. He’s also the first adjudicated rapist, the first to advocate censorship of the free press, the first to openly praise and support fascist dictators, and the first to accept bribes through his hotels and golf resorts, and other phony business ventures (Trump Media, Trump coin, etc.).

Another constant in the cavalcade of Trump’s criminality is his flagrant hostility toward justice and the rule law. Trump shares his hatred of law enforcement with all of the organized crime gangs that preceded him, and for the same reasons. None of them want to be held accountable for their wrongdoing.

It has been less than three weeks since Trump’s inauguration, and he has already been spanked by the courts multiple times for exceeding his authority. In one case his deadline to force for federal employees to resign was delayed. In another his attempt to end birthright citizenship was blocked. Most recently his order to shutdown the US Agency for International Development (USAID) was halted, and his cronies prohibited from accessing or retaining any data that they had collected.

It was the latter ruling that triggered the Trump team to escalate their war on the judiciary. Trump’s co-president, Elon Musk, was compelled to speak out on his own propaganda platform (Twitter/X) saying that “A corrupt judge protecting corruption. He needs to be impeached NOW!” And that “I’d like to propose that the worst 1% of appointed judges, as determined by elected bodies, be fired every year. This will weed out the most corrupt and least competent.”

Musk’s proposal to annually fire judges at the whim of partisan elected representatives is a blatant assault on the independence of the judiciary. But it isn’t surprising that he has no respect for these pesky details that form the foundation of America’s justice system, and that prevent him from acting out his tyrannical fantasies.

Joining in on the judge bashing is Vice-President JD Vance. He tweeted a message that demonstrates just how clueless about the law a Yale Law graduate can be after he’s been indoctrinated into a cult. He wrote that…

“If a judge tried to tell a general how to conduct a military operation, that would be illegal. If a judge tried to command the attorney general in how to use her discretion as a prosecutor, that’s also illegal. Judges aren’t allowed to control the executive’s legitimate power.”

JD Vance posted this decree essentially advocating for the elimination of the constitutionally co-equal judicial branch of government so that Trump can reign as a tyrant.

Every word of that is nonsense. None of what he claims is illegal violates any law. To the contrary, if a general, an attorney general, or any other executive branch official, were to engage in conduct that is contrary to the Constitution, they can be ordered to stop the offending conduct and be punished, if necessary, in accordance with the law. Any other interpretation would be a de facto authorization for the president – or any subordinate he designates – to violate the Constitution at will.

This rant by Vance essentially decrees that the constitutionally co-equal judicial branch of government is irrelevant and that Trump is free to reign as a tyrant. To be sure, that’s precisely what Trump aspires to. But it is not remotely permissible in a constitutional republic with clear delineations outlining the separation powers.

So neither Trump, nor Vance, nor Musk, nor anyone else in the Trump Mob, can ignore judicial rulings. Neither can they unilaterally impeach or otherwise intimidate or remove judges who don’t rule in their favor. And it is a frightening feature of the current state of America that anyone actually needs to be reminded of that.

Trump is Busy Doing the People’s Work: Pushing for Plastic Straws and Firing Journalists?

It’s good to know that Donald Trump isn’t just playing golf, proposing hostile takeovers of U.S. allies (Canada, Mexico, Greenland, etc.), nominating unqualified and anti-American Cabinet secretaries, terminating career prosecutors and FBI agents, and masterminding fascist coups of government agencies in order to sabotage their work.

On Friday morning Trump added to his list of priorities a couple of long-festering problems that have been in dire need of solutions. He posted his intentions on his failing Twitter ripoff, Truth Social, to let everyone know just how focused he is on America’s most urgent issues.

Trump’s first message made plain his determination to resolve a matter that surely takes precedence over immigration, school shootings, drug trafficking, homelessness, wars in Ukraine and Gaza, climate change, and the high price of eggs and gas. Trump wrote that…

“I will be signing an Executive Order next week ending the ridiculous Biden push for Paper Straws, which don’t work. BACK TO PLASTIC!”

Thank God! We absatively have to drop everything else and ban those horrible paper straws and return to the plastic variety that are known for “releasing chemicals into the soil, air, and water that are harmful to animals, plants, people, and the environment.” Why hasn’t anyone sought to do this before?

Trump’s next message sought to further his long battle against the free press that he refers to in Stalinist terms as “the enemy of the people.” He wrote that…

“Eugene Robinson of the Washington Post is INCOMPETENT! So sad to see him trying to justify the waste, fraud, and corruption at USAID with his pathetic Radical Left SPIN. He should be fired immediately!!!”

It’s about time that the U.S. government clamp down on wayward reporters who have the audacity to exercise their rights under the Constitution’s First Amendment. Especially Pulitzer Prize-winning columnists like Robinson. And leave it Trump, who regularly castigates the press and calls for censorship by the government, to lash out at a journalist and demand that he be fired.

It’s unclear what Trump was specifically referring to in his harangue. However, it is likely that he watched Robinson on MSNBC offering well-deserved criticism of Trump’s assault on the USAID program that “is the principal U.S. agency to extend assistance to countries recovering from disaster, trying to escape poverty, and engaging in democratic reforms.” How dare they?

What probably triggered Trump was Robinson speculating that Trump and Musk were using USAID “as kind of a demonstration project, just to see how we can destroy an agency and demoralize the rest of the federal workforce.” Which would perfectly align with the behavior of the MAGA boys and their orchestrated coup.

UPDATE: Trump added another comment announcing that he is appointing himself as the chair of the Kennedy Center Board of Trustees, and terminating the current chair and “multiple individuals” from the Board. Why? Because he has nothing better to do (Elon’s running everything), and what the Center has been missing is a clod who has no relationship with modern culture? So look for future inductees like Kid Rock, Scott Baio, Roseanne Barr, and even Ivanka.

Sadly, there will be more of this sort of bullshittery to come, until they can be stopped by an uprising of protest among the masses, the Democrats in Congress, and the courts.

On Thursday Trump spoke to the global elites gathered at the World Economic Forum in Switzerland. And nestled into a long and rambling speech filled with his hallmark lies, threats, and self-exaltations, was a hidden gem of despotic dreamers everywhere. He bragged about his executive order banning misinformation and disinformation as subjects that could not be discussed by government. In other words, he could now spew all the blatantly false propaganda he wants and no person in any official capacity would be permitted to criticize it for being mis- or disinformation, even though that’s exactly what it is.

“I’m pleased to report that America is also a free nation once again. On day one, I signed an executive order to stop all government censorship. No longer will our government label the speech of our own citizens as misinformation or disinformation, which are the favorite words of censors and those who wish to stop the free exchange of ideas.”

Apparently Trump’s idea of a “free nation” is one that allows him to lie with impunity, while prohibiting any speech that he doesn’t like. Furthermore, in Trump’s Orwellian speak, accurately identifying something as disinformation is itself censorship and must be…well…censored. And you’ll never guess who Trump thinks is one of the main the offenders of his censorial edict. Just one day prior to his diatribe at Davos, Trump whined on his failing Twitter ripoff, Truth Social, that CNN and MSNBC should be barred from the air…

In addition to Trump’s remarks at Davos, he also announced that he will be appointing L. Brent Bozell III to run the United States Agency for Global Media. Among other things, the USAGM oversees Voice of America, for which Trump has named failed MAGA governor and senator candidate, Kari Lake, as its new director. Bozell is the far-right extremist who ran the pure propaganda purveyor, Media Research Center. His son is a convicted felon who was sentenced to nearly four years for his role in the January 6th insurrection, for which he was just pardoned by Trump.

All of this is consistent with Trump’s mission to kneecap the press and turn its hobbled remains into an outlet for MAGA lies and propaganda. And in the early days of Trump 2.0 the media has not demonstrated much courage in resisting Trump’s bullying tactics.

So it will up to patriotic citizens to make their views known and to influence the cowardly elements in the media to do their damn jobs and report honestly about the nefarious acts being proposed and carried out by the felonious occupant of the White House.

Trump lived up to his criminal inclinations by issuing a tsunami of execrable executive orders, including one that granted pardons to the more than 1,500 January 6th insurrections who stormed the Capitol, assaulted police officers, and threatened members of Congress, in order to help Trump undermine democracy. His inauguration address, and subsequent speech to his cult followers, were testimony to his tyrannical aspirations, and were riddled with lies.

Further evidence of Trump’s anti-American leanings were revealed during his executive disorder signing ceremony in the Oval Office. There were innumerable comments that exposed his malice and ignorance. But when he was presented with the order to delay the banning of TikTok – as required by law – he volunteered a statement that confirms his aversion to the Constitution…

Passed in Congress, it gives the president the right to make a deal or to close it. And we have 90 days to make that decision. But I could see making a deal where the U.S. gets 50% of TikTok. Polices it a little bit, or a lot. Depends on them.

There’s a lot of derp to unravel in that drivel. Let’s start with the fact that the law does not “give the president the right to make a deal or to close it.” The law requires that TikTok be sold or blocked from U.S. users. There is a 90 period within which a challenge may be filed, but that’s a legal challenge, not the prerogative of the president.

Furthermore, there is nothing in the law that allows the U.S. government to own 50% of the social media app. That would be blatantly improper and illegal. This was previously spelled out when Trump first floated his proposal for “saving” TikTok from the evil American “communists” who seek to prohibit the app run by “friendly” Chinese communists….

Trump seems to think that the U.S. government can be a business partner with a Chinese social media company that is suspected of improperly utilizing data collected from American users. That is wrong on many levels. First of all, it puts the U.S. in the position of collaborating with China to “spy” on American citizens. Secondly, it makes the U.S. government a profit partner in an otherwise private business. And thirdly, it violates the First Amendment by putting the U.S. government in a position to moderate (i.e. approve and/or censor) the speech of U.S. citizens.

The last item in that analysis has now been affirmed by Trump who says that it would be okay if his unlawful joint venture with China “Polices it a little bit, or a lot.” That could not be a more flagrant breach of the First Amendment. It puts the U.S. government in the position of censoring free speech. Even worse, it could also give China the same power over the speech of Americans. But Trump wasn’t through parading his recklessness and ignorance. He also said that…

“I may not do the deal or I may do the deal. TikTok is worthless. Worthless, if I don’t approve it. […] If I do the deal it’s worth maybe a trillion dollars. […] If I do the deal for the United States, then I think we should get half.”

True to form, Trump is making up preposterous numbers to validate his delusional thinking. For one thing, TikTok has value that transcends its U.S. user base. In fact, TikTok has about a billion users worldwide. About 170 million of them (17%) are in the U.S. So while the loss of that audience would be significant, TikTok would still have 83% of its current users.

Also, what the heck does Trump mean by “we should get half.” Who is “we”? What part of the U.S. government would the ownership of TikTok fall into? Would it be run by the White House? The Treasury Department? The Agency for Global Media that oversees the Voice of America? Who knows? And Trump doesn’t say. Also, where does the money go?

These are just some of the questions raised by Trump’s nonsensical meanderings. And finally, it’s notable that Trump’s current support for TikTok is a flagrant flip-flop from his prior position…

As Trump tries to take credit for "saving" TikTok, remember he was the instigator of the ban & bragged about it 2 years ago. The bill he advocated was introduced by Rep. Michael McCaul (R-TX). Democrats opposed it."Right about everything"? More like right-wing about everything.

Fox News Host Attacks Republican Senators for Supporting the Constitution – No, REALLY!

Unfortunately, that is the situation that this country finds itself in today. And it isn’t just Trump that is fomenting the dire circumstances that have captured the nation. Most of what was once the Republican Party has succumbed to the anti-democratic seduction of a self-professed strongman with divine providence who promises to cure all of our ills, and insists that only he can do so.

True to from, Fox News is fulfilling its mission to fluff Trump on all matters. Even if doing so requires chastising otherwise devoted Trump flunkies and repudiating the Constitution. To that end, Fox’s Laura Ingraham posted a couple of messages on the former Twitter castigating GOP senators who weren’t sufficiently worshipful of Trump.

In the first message, Ingraham asked “Why does NDakota have a senator who is already undermining Pres-elect Trump?” She was referring to GOP Sen. Mike Rounds, who is actually the senator from South Dakota. What she was complaining about was that Rounds delivered a speech in which, according to Politico, he said “that there are still three branches of the U.S. government, and the Senate will guard its independence.”

OH NO! A United States senator indicated his support for the Constitution’s separation of powers doctrine. She believes that an elected representative who would exercise his constitutional duties is “undermining” the president. Because that would impose on the omnipotent powers bestowed on Trump by Gawd! Ingraham surely wasn’t going to abide that sort of usurpation of the divine authority of Trump.

The second message that Ingrahm posted asked “Why does Oklahoma have a Senator who hates Trump? Strange given that Okla. voters overwhelmingly support Trump.” This time she was referring to GOP Sen. James Lankford, whose state she managed to get right. However, her complaint was that Lankford told reporters that “he doesn’t know ‘one way or another’ if President-elect Trump and his new Department of Justice (DOJ) pick, Pam Bondi, will apply political interference from the nonpartisan department.”

MY GOODNESS! A United States senator acknowledged that the Constitution gives the Senate the duty to provide “advice and consent” to a president’s nominations to his Cabinet and other executive branch positions. It isn’t optional. It’s required. But to Ingraham it’s proof that the senator “hates Trump” if he seeks to make an informed decision. Because, once again, that would impose on the omnipotent powers bestowed on Trump by Gawd!

This is how far the GOP has declined into the abyss of Trump cultism. and their Ministry of Propaganda (aka Fox News) is along for the ride to the bottom. They are unwaveringly faithful to Trump, even when it is flagrantly contrary to the Constitution. And he hasn’t even been inaugurated yet. So buckle up, America. It’s gonna be a bumpy ride.

Trump’s Prospective CIA Director [Now FBI Director], Kash Patel: We’re Gonna Come After the People in the Media

The nightmare scenarios that were contemplated prior to Donald Trump prevailing on Tuesday were never given the proper consideration that they deserved. Most politicians and pundits downplayed the most serious consequences of a second occupation of the White house by Trump. And the media engaged in new reality-distorting shenanigans that came to be known as “sanewashing,” the practice of cleaning up Trump’s spine-chillingly abhorrent, and mind-numbingly incoherent, commentaries to make them appear to be almost rational.

However, the grim truth always emerges eventually. And as Maya Angelou said, “When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time.” Trump showed us who he is repeatedly during his last term in office and throughout this year’s campaign. And who Trump is is a convicted felon, adjudicated rapist, financial fraudster, pathological liar, and aspiring dictator. But despite the abundance of evidence, many people managed to gloss over it and vote him in anyway.

Among the atrocious concepts that clog Trump’s cranium, are his yearnings to impose on America the visceral animosity he harbors toward the free press that he has maligned, in Stalinist terms, as “the enemy of the people.” He has filed innumerable, meritless lawsuits against a variety of news organizations, and threatened to revoke the licenses of the networks. Licenses that, by the way, do not exist, so therefore, cannot be revoked.

Given the current state of affairs, this would be a good time to recall what Trump flunky, Kash Patel, articulated in December about what would become the agenda for the press if Trump were to be reelected. In an episode of Steve Bannon’s “War Room” plodcast, Bannon and Patel shared the following exchange…

Bannon: Kash, I know you’re probably gonna be head of the CIA. But do you believe that you can deliver the goods on this in a pretty short order the first couple of months so we can get rolling on prosecutions?
Patel: Yes. We got the bench for it Bannon. And you know those guys – I’m not gonna go out there and say their names right now so the radical left-wing media can terrorize them. But the one thing we learned in the Trump administration the first go round is we gotta put in all America patriots, top to bottom. And we got them for law enforcement. We got them for intel collection. We got them for offensive operations. We got them for DOD, CIA, everywhere. […]

We will go out and find the conspirators, not just in government, but in the media. Yes, we’re gonna come after the people in the media who lied about American citizens who helped Joe Biden rig presidential elections. We’re gonna come after you.”

And there you have it. Patel is explicitly declaring his intention to use national security government agencies to assault the media. He is unabashedly proclaiming a policy to “come after” journalists and their employers who were critical of Trump, particularly on matters related to his “Big Lie” that the 2020 election was “rigged and stolen” from him.

Patel held a number of national security posts in the previous Trump administration, including Chief of Staff to Trump’s acting Secretary of Defense, Christopher Miller. He is now considered to be on Trump’s short list of nominees to be his CIA Director. [UPDATE: Patel was later named FBI Director] This makes his threats the all more disturbing. The CIA is prohibited from conducting operations against American citizens on American soil. So in addition to these threats breaching the Constitution’s First Amendment protection of the free press, they would be violations of federal law regarding intelligence operations.

Not that Patel or Trump give a whip about breaking the law. Trump has already been convicted of 34 felonies and has 54 more pending. Patel was compelled to testify before Congress where he took the Fifth Amendment to avoid incriminating himself. And Trump’s plans for his Injustice Department are just as bad as those for national security…

The trepidation that at least half of the American people feel about Trump reoccupying the White House is well founded. His proposals to implement the biggest mass deportation operation in history, slap inflationary tariffs on all imported goods, and cozy up to foreign tyrants, is not idle blather. He is showing us who he is. And his Cabinets appointments will validate the horrific regime that he intends to reign over.

Which makes it all the more imperative for Americans who cherish the privileges of our constitutional democracy to be ready to resist and fight back against Trump’s attempts to impose an autocracy with him sitting atop it in a golden throne. These may be seem like dark days, but we are the source of a brilliant light if we choose to be.

The Media Still Doesn’t Get the Danger that We – and They – Are In, But the Daily Show Does

One of the recurring themes of the Kamala Harris campaign that was highlighted in nearly every speech she gave was the insistence that “We are not going back.” And even though it appears on the surface that we are indeed regressing to a grim past, she was right. It seems impossible to imagine that voters, given the choice between a respected prosecutor and public servant, or a convicted felon, adjudicated rapist and wannabe dictator, would choose the latter. But that’s what happened on Tuesday night. There are as many plausible explanations for that major malfunction of democracy as there are pundits proposing them. And in the days ahead they will all be examined. But for now the nation must answer a couple of deceptively…

In the meantime, we remain burdened with an aspiring authoritarian-elect and a media establishment that doesn’t realize the risks they face, which led to the abhorrent state we find ourselves in today. And for anyone who doesn’t grasp the direness of this situation, note that Donald Trump, in his victory speech Tuesday night, went out of his way to make his hostility to the free press clear, saying that “I told JD [Vance] to go into the enemy camp. He just goes: OK. Which one? CNN? MSNBC?”

Throughout the 2024 election season, Trump expressed his deep animosity toward the media, including his official Ministry of Propaganda, Fox News. But for some reason, the media rarely defended itself and the unique provisions in the First Amendment of the Constitution that protects it.

However, there was a guardian of the free press that was found in an unlikely – although increasingly common – place. And it proves the not-very-old adage “I get my comedy from Fox News and my news from Comedy Central.” The Daily Show’s Desi Lydic delivered a monolog that, in addition to being hilarious, was more honest, and more profound, than most of what was seen on the mainstream media. She said in part that..

“Yeah, it’s official. America has elected its first criminal president before electing its first female president. What a day for proud felonists.”

And…

“Just think about what happened here. America voted this guy out in 2020. And what has he done since then? He tried to overthrow the government, he was convicted of 34 felonies, he spent an entire campaign promising vengeance against his enemies.”

And…

“Seems the only people you can’t blame for Trump’s victory are Black women and people in comas.”

And finally…

“Honestly, I don’t really care why she lost, I care why he won. We have spent so much time diagnosing Donald Trump and what his actions say about him. He’s a dictator, he’s a fascist, he’s a malignant narcissist whose blood type is fryer oil.

“But it’s pretty clear that America is the one that needs the diagnosis, because whatever’s wrong with him, we f**king love it. In this moment Donald Trump is holding up a mirror to the American people and it might be time to take a good f**king hard look. And I’m sorry. I told myself that this show would be uplifting tonight and give people hope and inspiration, but unfortunately, I’m too depressed. And quite frankly, very, very, hungover.”

Exactly! There will be scads of speculation about what Harris, or Democrats, or even a lazy, weak, greedy, complicit, press might have done wrong. But ultimately it was the voters who chose to pull the lever for the ignorant, profane, mentally infirm, lying, criminal, who caused hundreds of thousands of avoidable pandemic deaths, incited a treasonous insurrection, and whose closest associates labeled him a fascist and noted his praise for Hitler.

To be sure, those voters were influenced by the media that failed in its obligation to inform the public. And that failure was evident in the desertion by viewers that indicates just how dissatisfied they are with the quality of the news they are getting. Considering the feeble response by the media to existential dangers posed by Trump and his MAGA movement, it’s no wonder that American is tuning out.

Trump Threatens CBS Over Kamala Harris Interview on 60 Minutes He Says Was ‘Possibly Illegal’

Donald Trump has spent the past nine years castigating the media in the most vile terms. He regularly insults journalists as “stupid,” “lying,” “corrupt,” and biased against him, simply because they report the things he actually does and says. He maligns them with the same language that Stalin used, calling them “the enemy of the people.”

Trump’s fear and fury at the press is a core feature of his perverse persona. He labels any reporting that isn’t sufficiently worshipful “fake news.” Even his official Ministry of Propaganda (aka Fox News) isn’t safe from his seething animosity. And his anger extends far beyond mere insults and tantrums. He often issues impotent threats if a news network has the audacity to engage in responsible journalism. For example…

On Wednesday morning Trump was so bothered by a recent media event that he unleashed a rambling and rancid rant on his failing social media scam, Truth Social. The object of his outrage was the 60 Minutes interview of Vice-President Kamala Harris on Monday. Trump had agreed to participate at first, but later chickened out because he objected to their insistence on {gasp} fact-checking. And now, after the fact, Trump is lashing out with another lame and utterly preposterous threat. He raged that…

“I’ve never seen this before, but the producers of 60 Minutes sliced and diced (‘cut and pasted’) Lyin’ Kamala’s answers to questions, which were virtually incoherent, over and over again, some by as many as four times in a single sentence or thought, all in an effort, possibly illegal as part of the ‘News Division,’ which must be licensed, to make her look ‘more Presidential,’ or a least, better. It may also be a major Campaign Finance Violation.”

What Trump is whining about is that 60 Minutes edited the Harris interview, something that is done routinely in television journalism for legitimate reasons, including time constraints, clarity, and relevance. Trump’s assertion that some answers were edited “four times in a single sentence” is downright bonkers. And there is no indication whatsoever that Harris’ answers were altered to effect some political advantage. Trump’s complaint doesn’t even make sense, because he’s accusing CBS of edits that resulted in the answers being “virtually incoherent.” How would that help Harris?

Most troubling is Trump’s charge that the 60 Minutes interview was in some way “illegal.” As usual, Trump doesn’t provide any evidence of a crime, nor any statute that has been violated. He simply believes that if it bothers him it must be against the law. So he latches onto the fact that TV stations (not network “news divisions”) must be licensed to use the public airwaves. Which is his way of threatening CBS with the revocation of its license if they do not comply with his tyrannical demands.

This threat is consistent with Trump’s abhorrence of the free press. And it’s also consistent with his flaming hypocrisy. He has never complained that Fox News regularly (albeit futilely) edits his interviews to make him look better. He has never accused Newsmax of campaign finance violations for their slobbering sycophancy. And he doesn’t seem to object to the constant “sane-washing“ of his demented speeches by the rest of the so-called “mainstream” media. Which leads us to the rest of his Truth(less) (anti)Social comment…

“This is a stain on the reputation of 60 Minutes that is not recoverable – It will always remain with this once storied brand. I have never heard of such a thing being done in ‘News.’ It is the very definition of FAKE NEWS! The public is owed a MAJOR AND IMMEDIATE APOLOGY! This is an open and shut case, and must be investigated, starting today!”

The public is indeed owed an apology – from Trump. His hostility toward the press is another example of his imminent threat to democracy. And his attempts to intimidate the media are antithetical to the Constitution that he has said he would “terminate.”

If this is “an open and shut case,” why is Trump yammering about it on his website that no one but his glassy-eyed cult followers read, rather than filing a complaint with the FCC or the Justice Department? Maybe because even he knows that he’s full of **it.

THEY’RE EVIL! Wannabe Dictator Trump Says MSNBC ‘Shouldn’t Even Be Allowed’ to Be On the Air

The first target of every aspiring authoritarian tyrant is always the media. They regard it as an imperative to control whatever “news” is presented to the population that they are trying to plunder. In the process they manufacture flagrant falsehoods and fables intended to malign their opponents and exalt themselves. They invent scandals to denigrate their foes, and take credit for anything considered to be positive.

Sound familiar? Those are exactly the tactics currently being employed by Donald Trump and his malevolent mouthpieces in the MAGA media. Trump doesn’t hide his disdain for the Constitution’s protection of a free press. He has repeatedly referred to the press in Stalinist terms as the “enemy of the people.” His relentless attacks on journalists demean them as “lunatics” and “liars,” determined to destroy the nation, and more specifically, Trump himself. And he yearns to put them out of business, or at least under his command.

On Saturday Trump gave a campaign speech in Rome, Georgia, wherein he took another swipe at the media that he despises. And he resorted to the typical barrage of hyperbole and infantile insults and nicknames that are the hallmarks of his obnoxious oratory. This time his target was one of his perennial favorites, MSNBC.

“I tell you what. You take a look at MSDNC, how evil they are. They’re evil. They’re sick. They shouldn’t even be allowed to do what they do. Because it’s so corrupt. They shouldn’t be allowed to do it.

MSNBC has earned Trump’s ire mainly by reporting on what he actually says. So naturally they are evil and sick. But by continuing to advocate for blatant censorship, Trump is telegraphing what to expect should he return to his occupation of the White House. He longs to shut down media that fails to venerate him at all times. At the same rally Trump called the press covering the affair “criminals.” Their crime? Covering him and his bombastic and boneheaded ravings accurately.

This is not the first time that Trump has singled out MSNBC for his unique brand of vilification. For instance, there was this rant that revealed his ignorance of the television business (MSNBC is distributed on privately owned cable networks, not “FREE government approved airwaves”)…

And there was also this…

Sep 24, 2023: “MSNBC…should be investigated for its ‘Country Threatening Treason.’ […] I say up front, openly, and proudly, that when I WIN the Presidency of the United States, they and others of the LameStream Media will be thoroughly scrutinized for their knowingly dishonest and corrupt coverage […] They are a true threat to Democracy and are, in fact, THE ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE!”

So Trump is bragging “up front, openly, and proudly,” that he will abuse the power of the government to suppress his critics in the press. Not that anyone will be surprised about Trump’s penchant for abusing government power. This is not someone who should ever be permitted to hold any position of power. It doesn’t matter that he would have no legal authority to conduct the sort of oppressive operations that he is promising. He obviously doesn’t care about the law.

The law, however, cares about him. And his comeuppance has already begun with nearly half a billion dollars in civil judgments for defamation, rape and financial fraud. The criminal consequences are coming up next. And the media will exacerbate Trump’s mental meltdown by, you know, reporting on it.

Trump is Running a Mob-Style Protection Racket Whose Victims Include NATO and Taylor Swift

Psychiatric professionals have diagnosed him with a severe case of malignant narcissism and with prominent episodes of paranoia and sociopathy. These are mental maladies that are present in aspiring authoritarians and cult leaders.

Trump’s MAGA movement is a textbook example of a cult, wherein the indoctrinated followers regard the leader as infallible and near to a deity. They forgive him any and all transgressions. He can lie with impunity. He can break laws and openly violate moral standards. He can commit 91 felonies and repeatedly defame a woman that he raped. Trump has done all of this, while retaining the adoration of his glassy-eyed disciples, as well as his Republican Party parasites.

But Trump and MAGA are more than just a typical cult. Trump’s model for his operations is organized crime. He envisions himself as a mob boss whose underlings are beholden to him by a combination of favors and threats. No one is safe from his wrath, which is the eventual end of nearly every relationship he has.

On Sunday morning Trump posted a comment to his failing social media scam, Truth Social that exhibited his crime boss belligerence. It was directed at pop superstar Taylor Swift and read…

“I signed and was responsible for the Music Modernization Act for Taylor Swift and all other Musical Artists. Joe Biden didn’t do anything for Taylor, and never will. There’s no way she could endorse Crooked Joe Biden, the worst and most corrupt President in the History of our Country, and be disloyal to the man who made her so much money. Besides that, I like her boyfriend, Travis, even though he may be a Liberal, and probably can’t stand me!”

Trump thinks Taylor Swift should support him because he signed a bill (that he had nothing to do with, and probably knows nothing about) that benefited musical artists. He’s actually trying to take credit for Swift’s success that predated his occupation of the White House by a decade.

What’s more, Trump thinks that this inane argument will win him Swift’s political support. He thinks that she is as stupid as his MAGA minions, and that she has no values of her own. He would certainly ditch her, and viciously malign her, the instant she expressed any appreciation for President Biden. In Trump’s mind it’s all about money. So, like his hero, Al Capone, he demands loyalty for protection.

That was not the only recent example of Trump’s protection racketeering. He pulled the same move on America’s NATO allies. At his cult rally in South Carolina Trump told a story, that is surely pure fiction, about a leader of a “big country” who asked if the the U.S. would honor its treaty obligations in the event that Russia attacked them. Trump says that he replied…

“You didn’t pay? You’re delinquent? ‘No I would not protect you, in fact I would encourage them to do whatever the hell they want.”

This is a grotesque betrayal of American and international law. Treaties are not mere handshakes between the signatories. They are explicitly cited in the Constitution’s Article VI as the “supreme Law of the Land.” As president, Trump couldn’t unilaterly withdraw for alleged non-payment. The funds that he is referring to are not even owed to the U.S. They are goals, not requirements, for the member nations’ own internal defense budgets. And yet, wannabe Dictator Trump believes that he can demand a ransom for America’s allegiance. To Trump American honor is for sale like any other commodity.

However, when Trump says that he would “encourage” Russia to attack our allies he is going even further into the realm of overt treason, as defined by Article III of the Constitution that refers to giving “aid and comfort” to our enemies. That couldn’t be more submissive to the will of Vladimir Putin than if Trump planted a big, wet kiss on his – let’s say mouth.

You know Trump is serious about this extortion scheme because that is precisely the position he’s taken on Russia’s invasion of – and continued slaughter in – Ukraine. It’s also similar to the threats he imposed on state election officials in Georgia and elsewhere to get them to falsify election results. He also tried to extort Ukrainian President Zelenskyy to pressure him to dig up dirt on Biden. Trump even threatened the Republican National Committee in order to divert donations to himself rather than the party.

The pattern you see developing here is not coincidence. It is representative of Trump’s transactional and tyrannical personality. And if he were to return to the White House he would sell the country to the highest bidder without blinking twice. We must never allow that to happen.
