When Donald Trump publicly announced that he was banning CNN, MS NOW, and Politico from the White House and other presidential media locales, he was immediately swamped with criticism for his blatant breach of the Constitution’s First Amendment protection of press freedom.

True to form, Trump didn’t care because he has no respect for the Constitution or the cherished principles that it embodies. And that’s especially true of his aversion to the free press that he regularly refers to in Stalinist terms as “the enemy of the people.” Despite his craven addiction to getting constant attention, he has an open hostility to the media that provides it.

On Sunday morning Trump’s Attorney General and criminal defense lawyer, Todd Blanche, was on ABC’s This Week to demonstrate just how loyally sycophantic he is to his MAGA cult leader Trump. Of course many of Trump’s minions are flaming sycophants, so that isn’t particularly surprising. But when the subject of Trump’s ban on the media came up, Blanche proved that he is in a class all his own. He said that…

“Well, the president hasn’t denied access. That’s not the right way to describe it. What the president has said is that he is sick and tired of certain media outlets just refusing to report accurate news. It is a privilege to be in the White House for anybody, and the president knows that. It’s the people’s house. […]

“The unfortunate and sad thing here is that after years and years and years of one-sided media coverage of the president from certain outlets, the president finally said it’s not fair to the American people…Being in the White House is a privilege; it’s not a right.”

REALLY? So when Trump denied access to the media he wasn’t denying access? He was merely “sick and tired of certain media outlets” so he prohibited them from entering the White House. See how different that is? Blanche just declared that entering the White House is a privilege, not a right, and Trump can decide who gets the privilege. And he can base his decision on whether he is sick of certain outlets.

For the record, it is wrong to describe access to the White House as either a privilege or a right. It is mandated by law that the Supreme Court has affirmed, wherein if access is given to the media, it may not be revoked based on viewpoint discrimination.

Blanche’s comments in this interview actually confirm that Trump’s denial of access is unlawful. He admits that Trump made his decision due to his opinion that some reporting was allegedly not accurate. In Trump’s mind that means he disagreed with it, or that it was truthful and made him look bad. And Blanche has the gall to frame it as Trump wanting to be fair to the American people. By censoring the media?

In the same interview Blanche awkwardly tried to frame Trump’s media ban as a “national security issue.” Then he whined that Trump’s words were being taken seriously. No, really. When he was told that Trump complained that the media “want to try to diminish Republicans,” Blanche had a peculiar rebuttal that essentially argued that people shouldn’t listen to what Trump says…

Clearly there is a problem with the Attorney General who still sees himself as representing Trump, rather than the American people or the Constitution. And while he is only one of Trump’s Cabinet flunkies who feel that way, he is the one with the judicial system under his control. Furthermore, his comments regarding the media are way out of his lane. But then there hasn’t been a press secretary for several weeks since Karoline Leavitt resigned. Maybe Blanche is aiming to add that job to his portfolio.
