When Donald Trump nominated Todd Blanche to be Attorney General there were immediate concerns raised about his resume that were overtly disqualifying. Not the least of which was that he was Trump’s personal criminal defense lawyer, a role from which his legal obligations never expire absent extraordinary circumstances.

Blanche is a devoted election denier. He is one of the architects of Trump’s slush fund to reward insurrectionists who assaulted police officers on January 6th, 2021. His “Justice” Department has launched numerous investigations and prosecutions of Trump critics. He has been instrumental in suppressing the Jeffrey Epstein files. It doesn’t take a stable genius to recognize that Blanche is an imminent threat to American law and order, and even democracy…

Upon confirmation, Blanche wasted no time demonstrating that he would always remain loyal to Trump, rather than to the law or the Constitution. He was asked about that in an interview Sunday morning on Meet the Press. The host, Kristen Welker, noted that former Trump Attorney General, Bill Barr, once told him that his election denials were “detached from reality.” Which led to the following exchange with Blanche…
Welker: If you were faced with a similar situation, something that you did not think met this standard, the legal standard in your mind, would you stand up to the president?
Blanche: I will always stand up for what’s right. The president does not expect any of his leaders, including me, to just say yes to him no matter what he says. So of course there’s vigorous back and forth with every Cabinet member and the president of the United States. Which is exactly what president Trump expects. There is this extraordinarily false narrative that the president wakes up in the morning and calls me and says, ‘Todd, go prosecute X or Y.’ He does not do that. He has never done that. He will never do that. So if there is something that he wants to do, but he needs to know that there is a challenge, or that we can’t do it, of course I will tell him.
There is an abundance of bullshittery in that reply. Let’s break it down, shall we? To begin with, Blanche’s response to whether he would ever stand up to Trump was that “I will always stand up for what’s right.” Which is not the same thing as standing up to Trump. After all, he seems to believe that Trump is always right. Consequently, he’s saying that he will always stand up FOR Trump, not TO him.
Then Blanche says that Trump doesn’t expect his staff to always agree with him. REALLY? Trump is notorious for terminating anyone who isn’t unflinchingly adoring and supportive. Which is why he keeps scheduling Cabinet meetings where he forces his flunkies to praise him for a couple of cringeworthy hours.
Next Blanche shoots down the notion that Trump calls him with instructions on who to prosecute, or to cease prosecution. So we are expected to believe that it’s just a coincidence that only Trump’s critics are being persecuted, while cases against his friends are dropped. Not to mention his blatant bias with pardons.
What’s more, Trump wouldn’t even have to call Blanche. Trump makes his desires known with daily posts to his failing Twitter ripoff, Truth Social. So Trump’s underlings know exactly what he wants of them, and they obey like good little fascist minions.
Blanche wraps up by reiterating that if Trump “needs to know that there is a challenge, or that we can’t do” one of his requests, that Blanche will tell him. Once again, that is not standing up to him if he asks for something that improper or illegal. It only addresses whether it is doable.
So the bottom line is that Blanche will do anything Trump asks if he can. Which makes him unfit to serve as Attorney General. And shame on the Republicans in the Senate who know this and confirmed him anyway.
