The second occupation of the White House by Donald Trump has achieved something remarkable that anyone not in a coma could have predicted. He has managed to make this term even worse than the catastrophe over which he presided during his first term. And he’s proud of it.

Trump’s return engagement was marked for failure early on. He stacked his cabinet with fiercely sycophantic flunkies who had little to no experience or qualifications for jobs they were given. Consequently we have an alcoholic Fox News host serving as the Secretary of War Crimes, a heroin addict who doesn’t believe in vaccines as Secretary of Health, Trump’s personal criminal defense lawyer serving as Attorney General, and at least twenty MAGA cult disciples who were recruited from Fox News.

The resulting disasters should not surprise anybody. We are mired in the eighth month of a war against Iran that Trump said would last only a few weeks. The economy is a mess with a $40 trillion debt and the American people struggling to make ends meet. New outbreaks of disease and food recalls are announced daily. Trump has been granted near blanket immunity by his radical right-wingers on the Supreme Court. No wonder his approval ratings are at record lows as we approach the midterm election. Even Fox News can’t completely ignore it anymore.

If you think it seems like Trump and his regime are doing everything they can to help Democrats win in November, you aren’t wrong. Trump recently rejected an offer from Iran to end the war. He’s kissing up to brutal dictators like Xi Jinping of China, while chastising faithful allies like Canada. And on Monday he bragged about keeping his promises to – um – raise your gas bills and foul the air?

Trump’s Rapid Response account on Twitter/X posted a comment that said “PROMISE MADE, PROMISE KEPT: Trump rolls back car efficiency standards.” The comment linked to an article in The Hill that reported that…

“The Trump administration has rolled back car fuel efficiency [CAFE] standards requiring automakers to ensure their cars and light trucks were using less fuel. […]

“The administration argued that this would make cars cheaper, though opponents of the move point out that car owners could spend more on gasoline as a result. The change could also lead to more pollution and worsen climate change.”

WINNING? This is what the Trump regime regards as a “promise kept” that is worthy of boasting about? Do they think that the American people are going to appreciate this policy change that Trump is making on his own, without the support of the people or Congress or science?

For the record, Trump, who says that climate change is a hoax, previously lowered the CAFE target to 40 miles per gallon from the Obama era target of 54. Biden raised it back to 50. Now Trump is proposing to lower it even farther down to 35 MPG. Although he may encounter some obstacles. While he appears to be ignoring the administrative procedures required to make these changes, he won’t be able to so easily wave off the likely court challenges.

It’s interesting to note that if Trump’s followers actually read the article to which he linked (doubtful), they might get a different story than the fairy tale that Trump is telling. The Hill quoted Dan Becker, director of the Center for Biological Diversity’s Safe Climate Transport Campaign, saying that…

“Consumers will pay the price for these reckless rollbacks while Trump’s Big Oil and Big Auto buddies reap the short-term profits. This move spells short- and long-term disaster for people’s health, the planet, and even U.S. automakers who’ll sit on the sidelines while clean cars advance around the world.”

If Trump’s regulations remain in place, it will insure that everyone will be paying more for gas, because they will be using more of it. And that bill is coming due right as gas prices are climbing to new heights. Simultaneously, Trump’s plan will cause more pollution, resulting in more expenses related to health care and lost work time. Not to mention the human misery.

But never fear…Trump believes that this is another promise that he kept. The only problem is that it was a promise made to the oil industry and auto manufacturers so that they could rake in more profits at the expense of the working class Americans that Trump couldn’t care less about.

The good news is that those people will soon be keeping their own promise to throw Trump’s MAGA-tists out of office and restore common sense – and sanity – to the government.
