In many respects the current crisis embodies some of the same threats that tore the nation apart in that deadly and divisive conflagration. The Trump driven turmoil that America is undergoing today is ripping apart families over political and moral differences, and interpretations of law and principle.

Trump and his Republican Party have taken the lead in disparaging Democrats and even Republicans who fail to be sufficiently worshipful of Trump. And it is not merely the divergence of opinion that is common in a healthy democracy. The MAGA-tists have embarked on a crusade that mirrors the hostilities that resulted in the Battle of the States almost 200 years ago. Their invectives and lies are off the charts crazy.

A new poll by the Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI) sheds additional light on the severity and the causes of the division in American political life. And, not surprisingly, much of the responsibility lies with the media. The poll found that…

“Americans who most trust far-right news, including Newsmax and One America News, for accurate political information show the highest level of approval of Trump’s job as president (92%), followed by 86% who most trust Fox News. Smaller majorities of Americans who most trust the radio (67%) and who do not trust any media source also approve (61%). Far fewer Americans who most trust YouTube or podcasts (46%), social media (42%), mainstream TV news (25%), and newspapers (19%) approve of the job Trump is doing as president.”

In short, viewers of Fox News, OAN, Newsmax, and other MAGA media, are by far the most likely to believe the flagrant lies that prop up Trump’s public image. Those viewers are the glassy-eyed cult followers who regard Trump as a pseudo-deity who can do no wrong. And the reason they buy into that nonsense is that it is all that they are exposed to from the pro-Trump propaganda sources that they hungrily consume.

The poll delved deeply into a broad array of other political subjects and where Trump fit in. Or more pointedly, failed to fit in. For instance…

  • A majority of Americans agree “President Trump is a dangerous dictator whose power should be limited before he destroys American democracy” (56%).
  • A majority of Americans (56%) disapprove of the job Donald Trump is doing as president, compared with 42% who approve.
  • Americans who most trust far-right news show the highest level of approval of Trump’s job handling the Epstein files at 70%, followed by 68% who most trust Fox News.
  • Six in ten Americans (62%) believe things in the country are going in the wrong direction, including most Democrats (92%) and independents (71%), compared with 24% of Republicans.
  • Majorities say that the cuts in federal funding of health care programs (60%)…have gone too far.
  • Republicans (22%) are more likely than independents (16%) and Democrats (12%) to agree that political violence may be necessary to save the country.
  • Most Americans agree that “What President Trump is doing to the federal government is an assault on constitutional checks and balances and the rule of law” (54%).

While it is comforting to see that most of the American people reject Trump and his aspirational authoritarian agenda, it is troubling that there are still a fair number of weak willed citizens who are so easily misled. And the fact that they are swayed by the deliberately dishonest right-wing media is a disconcerting affirmation of the power of propaganda.

If the American experiment is to endure, there must be a solution to the harm posed by media that is purposefully lying on behalf of special interests, both political and financial. That solution must be careful not to step on the right of free speech. And while the right to speak may be practiced freely, it is not necessarily free of rebuttal or consequences if it deliberately causes harm.

Part of the solution was demonstrated in the $787 million settlement that Fox News had to pay to Dominion Voting Systems for defamation. There needs to be more of that. And it needs to hold individuals like Trump accountable as well. Because the more that liars in politics and media are held to a higher standard, the fewer opportunities evildoers will have to create the chaos that empowers the perpetrators of propaganda.

Why Won’t Republicans Release the Epstein Files That They Keep Insisting Will Exonerate Trump?

They have yet to articulate a coherent reason for doing so, other than their ludicrous lie that they are preventing Democrats from giving free healthcare to illegal immigrants. For the record, no Democrat has advocated or proposed that.

In reality, what Democrats are fighting for is to prevent the GOP from destroying the Affordable Care Act – aka Obamacare – and allowing healthcare costs to skyrocket for American citizens. GOP House Speaker, MAGA Mike Johnson, has refused to open up the House of Representatives for business, leaning on the government shutdown that he and his colleagues created as an excuse. The two things have nothing to do with each other. There is no reason Congress cannot be in session during a shutdown. After all, they are all getting paid.

The obvious reason that Johnson is putting the House on pause is that he doesn’t want to swear in a newly elected Democratic member, Adelita Grijalva. She would make the 218th signature on a discharge petition that would require the House to vote on releasing the files of the late child sex trafficker, and friend of Donald Trump, Jeffrey Epstein. Of course, Johnson and his minions are denying that.

However, their denials don’t pass the smell test. The latest made up justification for avoiding doing the people’s business is to rewrite the history of the Democratic efforts to release the Epstein files. On Tuesday morning Johnson told reporters that…

“Democrats did not say one word about the Epstein files during the entire Biden presidency. They had all the files in the Biden DoJ. They didn’t say a word about it. Four years. Not a word. And suddenly now, they’ve somehow convinced themselves that the Epstein files will be damaging to President Trump and Republicans in some way that they’ve imagined, and so they feign outrage.”

Nothing that Johnson said there is remotely truthful. PolitiFact did an extensive review of the timeline of the Democratic efforts to reveal the truth about the Epstein affair. What they found was entirely contrary to Johnson’s fallacious rambling…

“Starting in 2019, but before Epstein’s arrest that year on federal sex trafficking charges, some Democratic lawmakers including Rep. Lois Frankel and Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, both of south Florida, launched a years long quest to release Epstein records.

“The Democrats called for former U.S. Attorney Alex Acosta, who served as labor secretary during Trump’s first term, to testify about Epstein’s plea deal. They asked the Justice Department to investigate and release records. Democrats later pursued other strategies, including asking a Palm Beach, Florida, judge to release records.”

That’s a far cry from Johnson’s deliberately dishonest claim that “They didn’t say a word about it.” Not that Johnson or his Republican cohorts care about honesty. The notoriously dishonest Republican chair of the House Oversight Committee, James Comer, also weighed in saying that…

“The Democrats don’t care about transparency or accountability in this matter. The evidence we’ve gathered does not implicate President Trump in any way. Public reporting, survivor testimony, and official documents show that Bill Clinton had far closer ties to Epstein.”

If Republicans actually have evidence that Trump is not implicated in the Epstein files, you really have to wonder why they are working so hard to avoid releasing them and exonerating their Dear Leader. In fact, if they actually had such evidence, they would have released the files months or years ago. And that’s even more true if they also have evidence that implicates former President Bill Clinton.

It’s hard to image that Republicans have any proof that Clinton “had far closer ties to Epstein” when there are years of photographic evidence of Trump and Epstein’s close friendship, but nothing similar with Clinton. Epstein was a frequent guest at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort.

The only documentation of Clinton’s association with Epstein was that he used his plane, mostly for legitimate business related to the charitable Clinton Foundation. There is zero evidence of anything else. And it was the Trump administration that put Epstein’s partner, Ghislaine Maxwell, up in a Club Fed prison after she agreed not to implicate Trump in her dirty business.

If Trump and Johnson and the rest of the MAGA Klan really want to put the Epstein matter behind them, then they should release the files and take whatever heat happens to come their way. But they are clearly too afraid to do that. And the American people can see their fear. They can also see that Democrats aren’t the least bit afraid of demanding a full accounting and release of all the files. What does that tell you?

Not only did Johnson refuse to condemn the video, he praised Trump’s ability to nauseate people with social media. You have to be pretty deeply indoctrinated into the cult to find anything positive about Trump’s sick posting. There is nothing funny about bombing peaceful Americans with feces, just because they were exercising their constitutional rights. But Johnson was jsut getting started. We went on…

Johnson: Look, America is built on the idea of free speech you have the right to protest, of course, we jealously guard that. Chip [Roy] and I are attorneys. We defended that right in the courts. It’s impressive how Johnson can brag about his alleged support for free speech, as long as it isn’t used to mock Dear Leader Trump. That’s the same sort of conditional freedom that the Trumpists used get Jimmy Kimmel off the air, albeit briefly after they suffered a tidal wave of backlash.

Of course! The rallies were very small. They only drew enough participants to rank as the biggest national protest event in American history. And those seven million people weren’t representative of the country because some of them had “brand new signs” that he said – without proof – were paid for by philanthropist and democracy advocate, George Soros. Which is obviously improper and evidence of something awful. Not to worry though. Trump is “checking it out,” and will surely get to the bottom of it in two weeks or so.

The “No Kings” rallies held in more than 2,700 communities throughout the nation were also a peaceful exhibition of free speech by patriots that Trump’s cult operatives (i.e. Karoline Leavitt and Mike Johnson) and MAGA media (i.e. Fox News and Newsmax) called terrorists, criminals, and members of the imaginary Antifa organization.

The day after the No Kings rallies, October 19, 2025, Trump sought to shovel his way out of the ditch he had dug himself into. So naturally he booked an interview with Fox News Senior Trump-Fluffer, Maria Bartiromo. They managed to avoid the subject of the massively successful protests the day before, and the GOP’s pathetic attempts to malign them.

Instead, Bartiromo asked Trump about his shutdown of the government that he is trying blame on Democrats. Bartiromo began by asking a surprisingly rational question question. Unfortunately, she didn’t get a remotely rational reply.

Bartiromo: You’re gonna have to compromise around something with healthcare subsidies to end this thing?
Trump: I don’t know. Here’s the problem. They wanna give $1.5 [trillion] … They have a deal. We have a deal. We just want an extension. And the reason we want an extension is because you can’t make a deal with these people. They’re lunatics. They’ve gone crazy. They’re crazed people. Trump Derangement Syndrome. There really is that disease. At first I found it to be amusing. Now I find that it really is.

Ironically, the guy who pretends to have written a book titled “The Art of the Deal,” is incapable of actually making one. The extension he’s referring to is one that would allow healthcare subsidies for millions of Americans to expire, doubling or tripling their premiums. And the reason Trump gives for failing to reach a deal is that the Democrats are “lunatics.” Never mind that it is Trump who has refused to negotiate, and his minions in Congress who explicitly admitted that the shutdown is “something that we’ve all always wanted to do.”

In the same interview, Trump embraced a never ending shutdown saying that “I think that they could just stay out forever.” And he salivated at the prospect of terminating programs that benefit poor Americans, saying that the shutdown “gives me the right to cut programs that Republicans never wanted…welfare programs, etc.” It doesn’t. At least no legally.

Trump is bragging that he is going to cut programs that help poor Americans. Which he can't do legally.He is happy to be hurting millions of low income Americans – including Republicans – and is admitting that it is Democrats who really care about the people.

The seething hostility of the pro-kings Republican Party has devolved entirely into a blatantly anti-American faction of fascists and frothing followers of the festering Trump cult. Their attempts at disparaging the democracy loving protesters has sunk to noxious lows wherein they repeatedly slander the No Kings events as “hate rallies” and baselessly accuse the peaceful participants of being terrorist sympathizers and criminals.

Naturally, Trump’s Ministry of Propaganda, Fox News, is contributing to the contemptuous caterwauling. Everyone from Sean Hannity to Jesse Watters to Laura Ingraham to the “Curvy Couch” potatoes of Fox and Friends, are lashing out with snarling invectives. And among them is Fox News host, and Trump’s own daughter-in-lawlessness, Lara Trump, who told her pals at Fox and Friends that…

“It should surprise absolutely nobody that the same group who doesn’t understand the meaning of fascism and also can’t define what a woman is, doesn’t understand what a king is…It feels like so many of these people don’t know what to do with themselves….So I guess their response is to get out in the streets and protest it. The best response I’ve seen thus far came from president Trump himself.”

Whereupon Lara read what she said were Daddy Trump’s own words responding to the first No Kings rally last June. Reading from her notes, Lara recited the following…

“A HUGE THANK YOU to all the ‘No Kings’ protesters yesterday! I was very concerned a king was trying to take my place, but thanks to your tireless efforts, I am STILL YOUR PRESIDENT! Great job all!!!”

There’s just one little problem with that. Trump never posted that comment or said those words. It was a fake meme that circulated on Twitter after the June No Kings rallies that drew over five million people. But Lara is so stupid that she doesn’t know the real quotes of her pappy-in-law from the phonies.

However, Lara isn’t alone. Last June after the first No Kings rallies, Fox News Senior Trump-Fluffer, Maria Bartiromo, made the same mistake. During an interview with GOP Rep. Dan Crenshaw, Bartiromo quoted the same fake Trump post as if were real. Maybe that’s where Lara got it from. After all, that’s where Donald gets all of his fake news from. And they all better start to pay attention to these No Kings events. Because they are drawing historic crowds, and…

“Political science research has quantified that when a mere 3.5 percent of a nation’s population mobilizes in peaceful protest, it becomes nearly impossible for the government to ignore the people’s demands.”

On a lighter note, the Daily Show put together a montage of MAGA minions, including Donald Trump, expressing their disgust at anyone who would insult the American people as viciously as Trump’s Propaganda Secretary, Karoline Leavitt, did recently. Crybaby Trump Whines – aka Lies – that His Judicial and Legal Nominees Aren’t Being Confirmed

The Complainer-in-Chief, Donald Trump, is at it again. Never mind that the United States government is in the midst of another Trump Shutdown. Or that Trump’s inflationary tariffs continue to raise the cost of living for the American people. Or that Trump’s ICE thugs are invading cities and harassing citizens across the country. Or that Trump’s “Justice” Department is persecuting his political foes and the press. Trump is too busy bellyaching about his own perceived victimhood to worry about any of that.

Donald Trump Pacifier Fox

None of this should come as a surprise to anyone who has been paying attention. After all, Trump himself told us years ago that he is “the most fabulous whiner.” No, really. He literally said that he whines until he gets what he wants. And it may be one of the few times that we can actually believe him…

The latest demonstration of Trump’s distemperment came in a comment posted to his failing Twitter ripoff, Truth Social. He is apparently very disturbed by what he says as the failure of Congress to confirm his judicial and attorney nominees. Specifically, he is upset at the Democrats who have legitimate reasons to oppose them. Trump lashed out saying that…

A ‘Blue Slip’ means that if you’re a Republican President, and there happens to be just one Democrat Senator in a state where you are appointing a U.S. Attorney or District Court Judge, you will never be successful in getting a Republican confirmed. In other words, ‘Blue Slips’ are a disaster, and I have eight GREAT Republican U.S. Attorney Candidates who will not be able to fulfill their service to the people of a state that voted overwhelmingly for me. The only one I can appoint is a Democrat, and that’s not the deal. Nobody can say that is fair or, even, Constitutional. Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DJT.”

There’s a lot wrong with that pitiful rant. Overall, Trump’s core complaints are two-fold. 1) that he can “never be successful” in getting his nominees confirmed. And 2) that it’s all the fault of Democrats. However, both of those gripes are false.

First of all, Trump’s complaint about judges not being confirmed doesn’t comport with reality. Here are the facts. He had 174 judges confirmed in his first term. He has six confirmed so far in his current term. He currently has 14 nominees pending. However, none of them are in states with a Democratic senator. Therefore, there are no “Blue Slips” to contend with. So if his judges aren’t being confirmed, there are other reasons.

Trump then complains about his U.S. Attorney nominees who aren’t being confirmed. Blue Slips are not a part of the process for that job. So, once again, they are not the reason that his nominees have stalled. The facts are that he has already had 19 confirmed. Part of the problem here is that Trump keeps appointing people on an interim basis, and then trying to make them formal nominees. But there are laws that regulate the circumstances under which that is permitted. And Trump doesn’t understand those laws, or care about them.

So Trump’s problems with both his judges and U.S. attorneys are purely of his own making. But rather than acknowledge his ignorance and incompetence, he is resorting to his favorite reaction: Whining and trying to shift the blame for his failures unto others. And this is the “leader” that MAGA thinks is so strong and powerful? Yeah, right!

Donald Trump and Karoline Leavitt

So, true to form, the spokesperson for the MAGAtist-In-Chief, Karoline Leavitt, upped the ante on Thursday morning during yet another interview on Fox News. Like so many of Trump’s Cabinet members, she seems to make more appearances there than she does in the White House Press Room. And on this occasion she was loaded for bear. Even more than usual.

Leavitt was taking questions from Fox News while the government was in the midst of the third week of the Trump Shutdown. Which has been going very badly for the administration whose excuses were falling flat with the American people who knew better than to believe Trump and Company. Consequently, she desperately needed a distraction. And what she chose was this bit of vile defamation…

“The Democrat Party’s main constituency are made up of Hamas terrorists, illegal aliens, and violent criminals. That is who the Democrat Party is catering to. Not the Trump administration, and not the White House, and not the Republican Party, who is standing up for law abiding Americans, not just across the country, but around the world.”

Note that Leavitt isn’t merely accusing Democratic leaders or politicians or media of being terrorists and criminals, as the MAGA Klan often do. Nope. Now she is accusing their constituents. Which means Democratic voters. That’s at least half the country. It’s a major escalation of hostilities by the Trump regime.

What’s more, Leavitt couldn’t be more mistaken in her maliciousness. After all, it’s Trump who is the criminal with 34 felony convictions. He is the one who pardoned hundreds of rioters who stormed the Capitol and assaulted cops. He has supported the terrorist actions of Vladimir Putin against civilians in Ukraine, and Benjamin Netanyahu’s genocide in Gaza. He directs his own terrorist actions against potentially innocent fishermen in the Caribbean. Not to mention his hostile invasions of U.S. cities with military troops. Yet Trump et al project their own malfeasance onto their enemies.

As for “standing up for law abiding Americans,” Trump has issued pardons for his friends, and convicted criminals, such as Steve Bannon, Roger Stone, Peter Navarro, and many more. And it is Trump who continues to cover up for his pedo-pal, Jeffrey Epstein. An aversion to being law abiding seems to be a prerequisite for entry into Trump’s inner circle.

Meanwhile, Leavitt is also promoting a Fox News smear campaign involving the nonexistent organization, Antifa, which the Trump regime has tried to link to Democrats. A story by Fox News asserts that Trump’s “Justice” Department has filed its first charges against alleged Antifa conspirators, saying that…

“A federal grand jury indicted two alleged Antifa members with terrorism-related charges for a July 4 attack on an ICE facility in Texas. […] ‘For the first time ever, the FBI has arrested anarchist violent extremists and charged these Antifa-aligned individuals with material support to terrorism,’ FBI Director Kash Patel said in a statement.”

There’s just one little problem with that. Although the terms “Antifa” and “Antifa Cell” were used repeatedly throughout the Fox News story and the descriptive text of the indictment, and even by Trump’s FBI Director Kash Patel, the word “Antifa” was not mentioned once in the seven actual counts against the defendants. And since there is no such thing as Antifa, it is not surprising that prosecutors could not make legal assertions of membership in an imaginary group.

This is how Trump and his MAGA cohorts are “toning down the rhetoric” that they pretend to believe is so divisive and dangerous. To they contrary, they have been the worst practitioners of vicious invectives to stir up trouble. They know what they’re doing and what the consequences are. They just simply don’t care.

Fox News Lies Fuel the Trump Regime’s Efforts to Blame Democrats and Migrants for the Shutdown

So naturally it’s time for Donald Trump and his minions to look to their Ministry of Propaganda, Fox News, for support to bolster their faltering campaign to strangle the life out of the government that they despise and to avoid opening it up to serve the people, and perhaps, hold a vote on the issue that most terrifies Trump: releasing the Epstein files.

On Wednesday morning, Trump’s Propaganda Secretary, Karoline Leavitt, joined in on the lies that Democrats want to keep the government shutdown in order to give free healthcare to illegals aliens. But her “proof” of that is a story by Fox News that completely fails to validate the charge – even when it isn’t spreading flagrant falsehoods. The article published by Fox News leads off saying that…

“EXCLUSIVE: The White House unveiled a number of criminal illegal migrants who received Medicaid as the Senate remains in gridlock over the government shutdown. Fox News Digital obtained detailed information surrounding the arrests of 49 illegal migrants, who have all been deported under the Trump administration, who were arrested for an array of crimes that occurred in the U.S. […] Republicans argue that ‘more than 1 million illegal aliens’ receive Medicaid under the previously existing program that was revised under Trump’s landmark bill.”

Nowhere in the Fox News article that Leavitt cited is there any documentation of the alleged “criminal illegal migrants who received Medicaid.” And even if there were documentation, finding 49 out of a million is hardly evidence of a crisis. It’s barely a rounding error.

The Fox News article concedes that “federal law prohibits undocumented individuals from obtaining Medicaid.” Which is a point that Democrats have been making all along. The article even acknowledges that “A White House official explained that illegal migrants could obtain Medicaid through different means, but, specifically, emergency care.” And emergency care is mandated by the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA), a law that was signed by President Ronald Reagan in 1986.

The article further stated that “emergency care spending on those not legally in the U.S. rose from $3 billion to $9 billion under President Joe Biden.” Once again, there is nothing validating that claim in the article. So it should come as no surprise that it is a totally false claim. According to KFF Health News…

“A new Congressional Budget Office (CBO) report shows a total of $27 billion in federal and state spending on Emergency Medicaid for noncitizen immigrants between fiscal years (FY) 2017 and 2023. […] this spending represents less than 1% of overall spending in Medicaid over the entire time period, and, in some years, is less than half of a percent. Spending on Emergency Medicaid was $3.8 billion in FY 2023 and was .4% of total Medicaid spending that year.”

The figures stated above cover most of the Biden presidency and don’t come close to the $9 billion stated by Fox News. What’s more, those CBO numbers are for all immigrants – both legal and otherwise. Which means that the Republican excuse for keeping the Trump Shutdown going is a tiny fraction of federal funds for emergency care that has been mandated by law for forty years.

The real reason that Trump and Republicans are deliberately prolonging the shutdown is, of course, their determination to shutter dozens of critical government agencies, fire thousands of federal employees, and reform American democracy into an autocracy that is ruled by Dear Leader Trump. It’s a model of totalitarian takeover that Trump has borrowed from his idols, Vladimir Putin, Xi Jinping, and Kim Jong Un. It’s dangerous, and treasonous, and he must not be allowed to succeed. Because in America we have NO KINGS! Be there.

Trump’s Secretary of War on the Press, Pete Hegseth, Is Rebuked By the Media He’s Trying to Censor

The most anti-free press regime in American history, led by Donald “The Media is the Enemy of the People” Trump, is once again proving how out of touch it is with the principles of the Constitution and its First Amendment prohibition against “abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press.”

Pete Hegseth with Drunk Emoji

When Donald Trump made Pete Hegseth his Secretary of “War,” he was installing a flunky who he knew would obey his every command, no matter how averse to the law or morality. And Hegseth proved his fealty to Trump last month when he issued a decree demanding that the press must swear a Trumpian loyalty oath before being allowed access to the Pentagon or to military leaders who work for the American people. It was such a repugnant proposal that even Trump was against it when he first heard about it.

Of course, Trump, in his perpetual state of ignorance and/or dementia, likely had no idea what the new rules imposed by Hegseth meant. But they were consistent with his twisted mindset, believing that he can dictate what the media reports about him. The mandate that Hegseth imposed on the press forbids them to do any investigative reporting, interviewing, or to publish any stories that haven’t been pre-approved by Hegseth’s Pentagon overlords.

Under this decree, reporters would be required to have an approved Pentagon escort when in the building. And should they refuse to sign the oath, they risk losing their press credentials. Hegseth claimed that the new rules boiled down to three tenets:

  • The press no longer roams free. Hegseth’s explicit dismissal of the free press.
  • The press must wear visible badges. Unlike Trump’s badgeless, masked ICE thugs.
  • Credentialed press is no longer permitted to solicit criminal acts. Which they have never been permitted to do.

When a government agency threatens to revoke the credentials of news organizations that don’t obey their edicts, you don’t have a free press. You have a fascist dictatorship that obviously has some very troubling things to hide. Consequently, Hegseth’s decree was roundly rejected. Several major news outlets condemned the new rules and refused to sign. They include ABC News, CBS News, CNN, NBC News, Associated Press, the New York Times, the Washington Post, Reuters, The Atlantic, and NPR.

Even the ultra-MAGA outlets Newsmax and the Washington Times declined to sign. The shamelessly Trump-fluffing One America News Network (OAN) is the only outlet that, so far, has agreed to go along with Hegseth’s Hegemony. And surprisingly, Fox News, Hegseth’s previous employer, was one of those that would not sign on. That’s gotta sting. In a joint statement, the resisting media said that…

“Today, we join virtually every other news organization in declining to agree to the Pentagon’s new requirements, which would restrict journalists’ ability to keep the nation and the world informed of important national security issues.

“The policy is without precedent and threatens core journalistic protections. We will continue to cover the U.S. military as each of our organizations has done for many decades, upholding the principles of a free and independent press.”

It will be interesting to see if Hegseth and the Pentagon stick to this censorious initiative. Or if Trump bothers to weigh in. In the meantime, they have affirmed just how much they despise the free press. And considering everything they have to hide – including Trump’s lawlessness, his administration’s massively unpopular agenda, and of course, the infamous Jeffrey Epstein files – it’s no wonder they hate even the thought of a free press.

Trump Blasts the Former Presidents Who ‘Strangled’ Middle East Peace – Which Includes Himself

There are good reasons to be grateful today for the freedom of the 20 remaining living hostages taken by Hamas two years ago. The October 7 slaughter that Hamas conducted at a music festival in Israel was unthinkably repugnant. And the hostage taking was cruel and unforgivable.

While it may be a joyous day for the freed hostages and their families, we cannot forget the horror of the past that resulted in the deaths of so many innocent people. And that includes the tens of thousands of Palestinians is Gaza who were not combatants and had no part in the atrocities of Hamas.

On this day we are thankful that some of the victims have been returned. But we must also remain committed to preventing any such event from occurring in the future. And with regard to that, we must recognize that Donald Trump is not helping matters. He is not a hero or a peace activist. To the contrary, he has exacerbated the problem with his vile rhetoric and his exploitation of events to glorify himself.

For instance, in the address he gave before the Israeli Knesset, Trump frequently wandered off into shameless praising of himself for making America “the hottest country anywhere in the world.” Which has nothing to do with the situation in the Middle East. But even worse, he sought to heap all the credit on the “peace” deal onto himself, saying that…

“What we’re doing now, it could’ve happened a long time ago, but it was strangled and set back almost irretrievably by the administrations of Barack Obama and then Joe Biden. There was a hatred toward Israel.”

REALLY? In Trump’s revisionist history, only former presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden were responsible for failing to achieve peace in the Middle East. However, he left out another president who served in between those two. His name was Donald Trump. So why didn’t Trump get a peace deal four years ago if it was so easy? Was it because he has a “hatred toward Israel”?

It should also be noted that the deal Trump claims credit for now was fundamentally the same as one that Biden had proposed in May of 2024. It contained the same three phases, hostage releases, and plans for governing of Gaza. Israeli president Benjamin Netanyahu nixed that deal under pressure from his far-right legislators. He may also have had an incentive to prevent Biden from getting any credit, in order to help Trump win the 2024 election, and then agree to essentially the same plan, but attaching Trump’s name to it.

So while we rejoice in the good news about the freed Israelis who have suffered for so long, let’s also keep in mind that the sort of ignorance, dishonesty, hostility, and incompetence, that is part and parcel of the character of Trump, has caused more suffering than it has resolved. And if we are to progress as a nation, and a leader in the world community, we must not allow villains like Trump to come to power just so they can abuse it.
