In the past nine months Donald Trump has issued several less than compelling ultimatums to Vladimir Putin regarding his ongoing war of aggression against Ukraine. Even before he reoccupied the White House Trump promised that he would end the war in 24 hours with a single phone call to his dear friend Vlad.

Since taking office Trump reiterated his intentions to bring the conflict to a close. Last month Trump met with Putin in Alaska to negotiate a ceasefire. While steadfastly refusing to ever say anything critical of Putin, Trump insisted that Putin would have to agree to a ceasefire within 50 days – later reduced to 10 days – or there would be “severe consequences.” But as usual, Trump Always Chickens Out…
SEE THIS: TACO Trump Gives Putin Another 2 Weeks – No, Really, 2 Weeks – and He Really Means It This Time
Unsurprisingly, Trump’s deadlines have all passed. And on Saturday Trump posted another decree on his failing Twitter ripoff, Truth Social, expressing his thoughts on how to bring peace to the region in a letter he claimed to have sent to America’s NATO allies. Unfortunately, it was just more Trump malarkey that will create more confusion than completion. He babbled in part that…
““I am ready to do major Sanctions on Russia when all NATO Nations have agreed, and started, to do the same thing, and when all NATO Nations STOP BUYING OIL FROM RUSSIA. […] I believe that this, plus NATO, as a group, placing 50% to 100% TARIFFS ON CHINA, to be fully withdrawn after the WAR with Russia and Ukraine is ended, will also be of great help in ENDING this deadly, but RIDICULOUS, WAR.”
So Trump is “ready to do major Sanctions on Russia,” but only if all of NATO joins him. That’s a pathetically weak statement. Firstly because it exposes him as being afraid to show any smidgen of leadership. And secondly because it shields him from doing anything at all. If every one of the NATO members doesn’t go along, Trump will blame the whole alliance for his own failure to act on his own promises. And Turkey, Hungary, and Slovakia are on relatively friendly terms with Russia and remain trading partners, particularly with regard to oil, so they can’t be relied on to agree to Trump’s demands.
Trump’s additional terms regarding China further complicate his initiative. He wants all of NATO to impose the same inflationary tariffs on merchandise from China that he has imposed on American companies and consumers. And he is asking this of NATO while he is imposing tariffs on them. That would result in NATO suffering the economic hardship of tariffs from both China and the U.S.
This plan could not have been better devised to fail if it were intentional. Which, undoubtedly, it was. Because Trump couldn’t care less about ending the war. Especially if it damages his relationship with Putin. Conversely, Trump has repeatedly demeaned and insulted Ukrainian President Zelenskyy. And he does so again in this letter saying that…
“This is not TRUMP’S WAR (it would never have started if I was President!), it is Biden’s and Zelenskyy’s WAR.”
See? According to Trump it isn’t Putin’s war at all. Never mind that Putin is the one who invaded Ukraine. And Putin is the one committing war crimes. And the war could end tomorrow if Putin would just have his troops go home. Trump’s blaming Biden and Zelenskyy was so offensive that it drew criticism from Rep. Don Bacon of Nebraska, a conservative Republican who sits on the House Committee on Armed Services. Bacon slammed Trump saying that…
“‘It is Biden’s and Zelenskyy’s war’ is so morally blind and factually wrong. Mr President, Putin is the one who is the invader. And, now this war is on your watch and you’ll be judged in the history books in the decades to come by your actions or lack thereof.”
Somehow, through all of this, Trump and his sycophants in Congress and the press think that he should get a Nobel peace prize. For what? Stalling any hopes of peace until Ukraine is defeated and Russia has achieved its imperialistic goals? If there is one thing we can learn from this, it’s that Putin could not have a better friend than Donald Trump. And America could not have a worse president.
