TACO Trump Gives Putin Another 2 Weeks – No, Really, 2 Weeks – and He Really Means It This Time

Whenever Donald Trump is asked a question that requires him to make a commitment as to when he will achieve a particular goal, he responds with the vague assurance that it will be completed “in two weeks.” That’s the deadline for everything from his still nonexistent healthcare plan, his infrastructure bill, the release of his tax filings, providing the “irrefutable” evidence that the 2020 election was stolen, and so much more.

Donald Trump Vladimir Putin

Now we can add to that list Trump’s promise that he will make a decision about what consequences Vladimir Putin will face if he doesn’t agree to a ceasefire in the war that he launched against Ukraine. Not that Trump is ever going to make Putin pay for anything. Trump has still never criticized Putin in any significant way. And with regard to the war, Trump generally blames either President Biden or Ukrainian President Zelenskyy, while always defending his mentor and idol, Putin.

During an Oval Office press avail, Trump was asked whether he had any comment about Russia having bombed an American factory in Ukraine. Rather than expressing the outrage that any rational president would feel, Trump merely said that “I’m not happy about it,” before diverting to bragging about his allegedly having ended ten other wars (he didn’t). Returning the question at hand, Trump said that…

“We’ll see what happens. I think over the next two weeks, we’re going to find out which way it’s going to go. And I better be very happy.”

That’s right. Two weeks. Again. This was already one week after Trump met with Putin in Alaska. Prior to the Alaska summit, Trump gave Putin a 50 day deadline to agree to a ceasefire. Within a few days Trump reduced that to ten days. However, even that deadline passed without any action on Trump’s part.

Then after another round of meetings with Zelenskyy and European Union leaders, Trump has still done nothing and, uncharacteristically, said little. What little he has said has suggested that the impasse is the fault of Zelenskyy for not immediately agreeing to Putin’s terms, which include surrendering parts of Ukraine and foregoing NATO membership. And for that Trump thinks that he deserves a Nobel Peace prize. NBC News reported some additional comments by Trump…

“I’m going to make a decision as to what we do, and it’s going to be, it’s going to be a very important decision, and that’s whether or not it’s massive sanctions or massive tariffs, or both. Or do we do nothing and say, ‘It’s your fight.’”

Well, that settles it then. Trump is strongly declaring his intention to do something, or nothing at all. Which perfectly encapsulates Trump’s notoriously wishy-washy approach to diplomacy. Putin will surely be persuaded by this stalwart display of spinelessness. And knowing that Trump has given him only two weeks to respond puts even more pressure on him to comply. Because once that deadline has been reached Trump will be forced to…come up with a new deadline. Because, as we know, Trump Always Chickens Out.
