The Daily Show Welcomes the Astronauts Back to an Earth They Won’t Recognize Or Want to Live On

It has been only 59 days since Donald Trump was inaugurated. And in the short passage of time he has managed to do more harm to American democracy than any prior occupant of the White House. His implementation of policies in conjunction with Elon Musk’s Department of Government Elimination (DOGE) are ripping apart the foundations of the American way of life.

Donald Trump, Woman, Fear

If someone were to have been in a coma for the past three months, they would be awakening to a country that would seem foreign, oppressive, and steeped in the dystopia of totalitarian regimes. They would find it hard to believe that they weren’t still in a nightmarish comatose state. They would be seeing an autocratic leader imposing his will on the nation, disregarding its Constitution, and ignoring its laws.

It’s not really funny. However, The Daily Show couldn’t resist bringing to life a scenario wherein someone who was temporarily removed from this world would be reintroduced to it in all its gory. So Desi Lydic anchored a video wherein she welcomed the astronauts who enjoyed an extended stay on the International Space Station back to what they thought was their home planet. She began with a hearty “Hello astronauts, and welcome back to Earth.” Then she went on (video below)…

“As you are flown back to the U.S., this video will re-acclimate your mind on what you missed while you were in space. First, the Gulf of Mexico you landed in is now the Gulf of America. But don’t worry, the name change is symbolic. We’re not going to war with Mexico. We’re going to war with Canada and Greenland, maybe Panama, also Mexico.”

Imagine their surprise to learn that Trump assumed the authority to rename international bodies of water to whatever he thought would tickle his cult followers. And worse, he embarked on a series of threats aimed at American allies, demanding that they bow to his will and agree to become colonies of the imperial empire he hopes to create. Then Lydic elaborated…

“Speaking of wars, when you left it was Russia that invaded Ukraine. Now it’s the other way around. Don’t worry about it. For now, just focus on resting. And after you enter U.S. territory, your space capsule will face crippling steel tariffs and you will be deported to an El Salvadorian prison just until we’re sure that you’re not Venezuelan gang members.

“And after your release in 2026, you will be honored at the White House, which is now run by Fox News anchors. Also, the anti-vaccine guy (RFK Jr) is now in charge of vaccines. The anti-FBI guy (Kash Patel) is now in charge of the FBI. And the lady in charge of the WWE (Linda McMahon) is now running the Education Department.”

That’s right! Whatever you thought you knew before you left, is no longer true. Russia is the American Fuhrer’s best buddy. Europe will be hammered with punitive tariffs. And Fox News now has a stranglehold on government operations with at least nineteen from their ranks working for Trump in the White House.

Lydic then points out that Trump is welcoming back all of the astronauts except for Suni Williams, because “when you left, you were a female astronaut. Now you’re a DEI astronaut, and also you’re fired.” And her job prospects are going to be hindered by an economy that is careening into recession. “The stock market is down, Lydic notes, “and eggs are $400.00. But those are both good things, and also Joe Biden’s fault.” Then Lydic closes saying that…

“At this point you’re probably wondering ‘When can NASA send me back up into space?’ Well, it probably can’t. NASA just got DOGE’d. Which is a real sentence now. So from all of us here in America, welcome to Hell – Earth. Welcome back to Earth.”

Lydic’s humorous take on current events is a welcome respite from the horror show being played out by Trump and company. And while the decidedly pessimistic outlook that anchors her comedy is, sadly, rooted in reality, there is a plus side. The American people are beginning to awaken themselves.

CNN’s Harry Enten unveiled the recent polling on Trump and his policies. And the numbers are likely to trigger another Trump tantrum. They show that Trump in his current term is only the second president since 1937 to have a net negative approval two months into a term. The other president to achieve that dishonor? That was also Trump in his first term. So at least he is consistent in his ignorance, incompetence, and deliberate malfeasance.

During the first occupation of the White House by Donald Trump, he proved that he was utterly inept and incapable of governing in a mature, responsible manner that would benefit the nation and respect the Constitution. He left office by staging a violent coup and stealing hundreds of classified documents.

From Trump’s deadly mismanagement of the COVID pandemic, to his disastrous failures with the economy and jobs, Trump performed with the same neglect, incompetence, and deliberate malfeasance that marked his business bankruptcies and personal debacles. And now he is gleefully preparing to exceed his own record of ruin.

The horrific fire storm in Los Angeles has driven thousands of people from their homes and put families and businesses at risk. Yet despite the turmoil and fear, everyone in the impacted communities, and their representatives in state and federal government, have united to combat the threat, restore order, and prepare to recover.

Well, almost everyone. True to form, Trump and his heartless MAGA minions have endeavored to wring every ounce of political animus out of the tragedy. Desi Lydic of the Daily Show noticed and led Wednesday night’s program with an apt description of Trump’s response.

“While everyone else is deeply concerned about what is going on in Los Angeles right now, Trump is handling the tragedy like the statesman that he is.”

Whereupon Lydic played a CNN clip noting that Trump is blaming California Gov. Gavin Newsom for the fires. And in addition to his lying flagrantly, he deploys his infamously infantile nicknaming by calling the Governor “Newscum.”

However, Lydic only scratched the surface of Trump’s malicious immaturity and callous insensitivity to the real suffering that people are undergoing. On his failing Twitter ripoff, Truth Social, Trump posted six separate, certifiably insane comments attacking Gov. Newsom, President Biden, and other Democrats as somehow being responsible for the fires. Needless to say, virtually all of Trump’s rants were flat-out lies, including that…

ONE: “Fire is spreading rapidly for 3 days — ZERO CONTAINMENT. Nobody has ever seen such failed numbers before! Gross incompetence by Gavin Newscum and Karen Bass….And Biden’s FEMA has no money — all wasted on the Green New Scam! L.A. is a total wipeout!!!”

TWO: “One of the best and most beautiful parts of the United States of America is burning down to the ground. It’s ashes, and Gavin Newscum should resign. This is all his fault!!!”

THREE: Let this serve, and be emblematic, of the gross incompetence and mismanagement of the Biden/Newscum Duo.

FOUR: “NO WATER IN THE FIRE HYDRANTS, NO MONEY IN FEMA. THIS IS WHAT JOE BIDEN IS LEAVING ME. THANKS JOE!”

FIVE: “As of this moment, Gavin Newscum and his Los Angeles crew have contained exactly ZERO percent of the fire. It is burning at levels that even surpass last night. This is not Government. I can’t wait till January 20th!”

SIX: “Governor Gavin Newscum refused to sign the water restoration declaration put before him that would have allowed millions of gallons of water, from excess rain and snow melt from the North…He wanted to protect an essentially worthless fish called a smelt…He is the blame for this.”

LATE ADDITION: [Because Trump thinks there’s a big faucet in Northern California] “Governor Gavin Newscum should immediately go to Northern California and open up the water main, and let the water flow.”

Note that, in addition to Trump’s utterly dishonest caterwauling, he doesn’t offer a single word of condolence or concern for the people affected. He is wholly consumed by his political hostilities and his shamelessly childish nicknames and insults. He couldn’t care less about the victims. The Daily Show Skewers MAGA Rep Nancy Mace for Supporting Trump and Other GOP Sexual Predators

There is a lot to be worried about now that Donald Trump is about to reoccupy the White House. His Cabinet and staff nominations thus far are a nightmare rotation of hacks, halfwits, and hopelessly felicitous followers of the Trump cult. Many of this motley crew were recruited from Fox News, because Trump’s foremost prerequisite for hiring is that he has seen the candidate slobbering over him on TV.

At times like these it becomes necessary to have some emotional escape in order to maintain some measure of mental health and to reenergize for the battles ahead. And since laughter is the best medicine, it ought to be prescribed in large doses. That’s where programs like The Daily Show come in. And it also helps that they are often better sources for news than much of the traditional media.

This week The Daily Show host, Desi Lydic, addressed the purely performative attacks on transgender Rep-Elect Sarah McBride by Republican Nancy Mace (SC-MAGA). Lydic noted the inherent prejudice of Mace’s hate speech as well as her blatant hypocrisy. And she names names. Lydic lashed out at Mace saying that…

“Yes, of course, you just want to protect women from hypothetical predators. That would play a lot better if you weren’t trying to get actual predators into the highest levels of government. Pete Hegseth, RFK, Matt Gaetz.”

Lydic goes on to play a video clip of Mace complaining about men in women’s spaces, followed by a clip of serial predator Trump bragging about invading the private spaces of women…

“I’ll go backstage before a show and everyone’s getting dressed and everything else. And you know, no men are anywhere. And I’m allowed to go in, because I’m the owner of the pageant and therefore I’m inspecting it.”

That sounds conspicuously similar to Trump’s boast that “when you’re a star, they let you do it. You can do anything. Grab ’em by the p*ssy.” He truly believes that he has the right to sexually harass and assault women at will. And Mace is perfectly fine with this, so long as it doesn’t involve a transgender woman in the ladies restroom. Funny, but I never hear people like Mace talk about trans men in the ladies restroom…

Mace’s obsession was evident in her 36 hour marathon posting of more than 250 tweets on this subject. However, one thing that she neglected to mention in all of that was her position on LGBTQ+ rights just three years ago when she said that…

“I strongly support LGBTQ rights and equality. No one should be discriminated against. I have friends and family that identify as LGBTQ. Understanding how they feel and how they’ve been treated is important. Having been around gay, lesbian, and transgender people has informed my opinion over my lifetime.”

That’s quite a reversal. What changed? Was it that she decided that sucking up to Trump was more important than standing up for equal rights? Or was it just her ploy to get more airtime on Fox News?

More importantly, will the rest of media display the journalistic integrity of The Daily Show by exposing Trump and his Cabinet cretins as the sexual deviants that they are?

Hopefully the Senate will exercise their constitutional duty of advice and consent to prevent these sleazeballs from attaining positions of power. And not just because of their utter lack of morals. But also because they have zero experience for the jobs they have been nominated to do by the Sleazeball-in-Chief.

Although Trump isn’t gonna make it easy for them. He’s considering foregoing the routine FBI checks for proposed presidential appointments. Because he knows his nominees won’t pass. Even worse, he has called for Congress to abdicate their role by closing up shop and allowing him to make recess appointments. These are the tactics of a totalitarian dictator, which is what Trump aspires to be.

The Media Still Doesn’t Get the Danger that We – and They – Are In, But the Daily Show Does

One of the recurring themes of the Kamala Harris campaign that was highlighted in nearly every speech she gave was the insistence that “We are not going back.” And even though it appears on the surface that we are indeed regressing to a grim past, she was right. Losing the election does not mean that we have lost the will to advance the principles of democracy and freedom.

It seems impossible to imagine that voters, given the choice between a respected prosecutor and public servant, or a convicted felon, adjudicated rapist and wannabe dictator, would choose the latter. But that’s what happened on Tuesday night. There are as many plausible explanations for that major malfunction of democracy as there are pundits proposing them. And in the days ahead they will all be examined. But for now the nation must answer a couple of deceptively…

…SIMPLE QUESTIONS: What Is America? Who Votes For This?

In the meantime, we remain burdened with an aspiring authoritarian-elect and a media establishment that doesn’t realize the risks they face, which led to the abhorrent state we find ourselves in today. And for anyone who doesn’t grasp the direness of this situation, note that Donald Trump, in his victory speech Tuesday night, went out of his way to make his hostility to the free press clear, saying that “I told JD [Vance] to go into the enemy camp. He just goes: OK. Which one? CNN? MSNBC?”

Throughout the 2024 election season, Trump expressed his deep animosity toward the media, including his official Ministry of Propaganda, Fox News. But for some reason, the media rarely defended itself and the unique provisions in the First Amendment of the Constitution that protects it.

However, there was a guardian of the free press that was found in an unlikely – although increasingly common – place. And it proves the not-very-old adage “I get my comedy from Fox News and my news from Comedy Central.” The Daily Show’s Desi Lydic delivered a monolog that, in addition to being hilarious, was more honest, and more profound, than most of what was seen on the mainstream media. She said in part that..

“Yeah, it’s official. America has elected its first criminal president before electing its first female president. What a day for proud felonists.”

And…

“Just think about what happened here. America voted this guy out in 2020. And what has he done since then? He tried to overthrow the government, he was convicted of 34 felonies, he spent an entire campaign promising vengeance against his enemies.”

And…

“Seems the only people you can’t blame for Trump’s victory are Black women and people in comas.”

And finally…

“Honestly, I don’t really care why she lost, I care why he won. We have spent so much time diagnosing Donald Trump and what his actions say about him. He’s a dictator, he’s a fascist, he’s a malignant narcissist whose blood type is fryer oil.

“But it’s pretty clear that America is the one that needs the diagnosis, because whatever’s wrong with him, we f**king love it. In this moment Donald Trump is holding up a mirror to the American people and it might be time to take a good f**king hard look. And I’m sorry. I told myself that this show would be uplifting tonight and give people hope and inspiration, but unfortunately, I’m too depressed. And quite frankly, very, very, hungover.”

Exactly! There will be scads of speculation about what Harris, or Democrats, or even a lazy, weak, greedy, complicit, press might have done wrong. But ultimately it was the voters who chose to pull the lever for the ignorant, profane, mentally infirm, lying, criminal, who caused hundreds of thousands of avoidable pandemic deaths, incited a treasonous insurrection, and whose closest associates labeled him a fascist and noted his praise for Hitler.

To be sure, those voters were influenced by the media that failed in its obligation to inform the public. And that failure was evident in the desertion by viewers that indicates just how dissatisfied they are with the quality of the news they are getting. Considering the feeble response by the media to existential dangers posed by Trump and his MAGA movement, it’s no wonder that American is tuning out.
