Donald Trump isn’t doing much to dispel the notion that he is an aspiring authoritarian who yearns to reign like the dictators he admires, Vladimir Putin, Xi Jinping, and Kim Jong Un. To the contrary, he keeps providing additional evidence of his autocratic tendencies, even as he whines about being called a fascist.

This week Trump directed his “Justice” Department to indict former FBI Director, James Comey, despite having no evidence of any crime. He deployed his StormTrumpers to Portland, Oregon, promising to use “full force” against the American citizens living there. He delivered an absolutely bonkers address at the United Nations where he told other member nations that “your countries are going to hell,” and complained about alleged sabotage of his escalator ride and TelePrompTer. This is not normal behavior for a president – or anyone else.

On Monday morning Trump upped the ante of presidential idiocy by issuing a threat to the people of New York City. He posted a comment to his failing Twitter ripoff, Truth Social, that was rife with animus and imaginary invectives. He raged that…

“Self proclaimed New York City Communist, Zohran Mamdani, who is running for Mayor, will prove to be one of the best things to ever happen to our great Republican Party. He is going to have problems with Washington like no Mayor in the history of our once great City. Remember, he needs the money from me, as President, in order to fulfill all of his FAKE Communist promises. He won’t be getting any of it, so what’s the point of voting for him? This ideology has failed, always, for thousands of years. It will fail again, and that’s guaranteed! President DJT”

Let’s begin to break this down by noting that Mamdani is not now, nor has ever been, a communist. And he has certainly never self-proclaimed to be one. Trump likely couldn’t define the word if his life depended on it. But he uses it as an all-purpose slur to fear monger his weak willed cult followers. And if he really thought that this “will prove to be one of the best things to ever happen to our great Republican Party,” he would keep his fat mouth shut. Obviously, he is scared witless of Mamdani and the Democrats in the Empire State.

More to the point, Trump is threating the citizens of New York with unspeakable harm if they choose to exercise their right to vote, but fail to select the candidate of Trump’s choice. His threat violates several federal statutes that prohibit him from abusing the power of his office to intimidate or punish people for how they vote. The Constitution also forbids him from misappropriating funds based on political criteria.

This is just another act of pure totalitarianism for Trump as he tries to interfere with an election by promising to withhold federal funds. Those funds would be used to pay for many critical services in the city and the state, including Medicaid, transportation, infrastructure, safety net services, education, healthcare, and more. He wants all New Yorkers to suffer if they do not obey his electoral demands.

This is a particularly grotesque threat considering that New York is a “donor” state, meaning that it pays more into the federal treasury every year than it gets back. That’s about $89 billion more. And yet, Trump thinks that he can punish New Yorkers by denying them these funds as if they came out of his own pocket. In reality, they come from New Yorkers themselves. Maybe they should withhold those funds from Trump’s regime in Washington.

This should not be considered just a threat toward New York. If Trump thinks he can do this to NYC, then he could try to do it to any city or state that doesn’t bend to his fascist will. And submitting to threats like this will only embolden him and his criminally dictatorial bullying. He cannot be allowed to blackmail voters.

We have a process for choosing representatives in America It’s called democracy. And Trump has repeatedly made it clear that he is utterly opposed it. A recent District Court ruling blocked Trump’s attempts to withhold federal funds as an unconstitutional abuse of power. Not that he cares about the courts – or the Constitution. But “we the people” do care. And he had better learn that lesson.
