AMERICA FIRST? None of Trump’s Pending Real Estate Projects Are in the US. What’s He Afraid Of?

The single most memorable slogan of Donald Trump’s political career is the phrase that he appropriated from Ronald Reagan – without credit – whose 1980 presidential campaign promised to “make America great again.” As an adjunct to that, Trump also frequently uses another slogan, “America First,” that was originally used by the American Nazi Party in the early 1920s.

In both cases these catch phrases were merely hollow rhetoric that Trump used like advertising jingles as political branding and had no relationship to his actual policies or principles. After all, Trump’s own MAGA merch (hats, shoes, bibles, etc.) is manufactured in China. And his imposition of recessionary tariffs on imported goods is really just a tax that will be paid by American consumers. Which he blames on American companies.

In addition to these burdens that Trump is placing on the American people and American businesses, Trump himself is seeking to exploit his presidency by profiting from business ventures in foreign countries. The website for his Trump Organization real estate firm features a Coming Soon page announcing his latest deals for new developments. Although some are just licensing deals where they paid to use his name. The web page boasts that…

“We are thrilled to unveil exclusive residential, golf, and hotel developments at the world’s most prestigious addresses. It is an honor to build upon our longstanding relationships with these renowned developers, and we look forward to welcoming our guests to these exquisite locations soon.”

However, contrary to Trump’s pretense of patriotism, of the nine projects listed, not one is in the United States. Instead they are spread mostly throughout the Middle East and Asia. For instance…

  • Muscat Oman: Residential, Hotel, and Golf
  • Jeddah, Saudi Arabia: Residential
  • Riyadh, Saudi Arabia: Residential and Golf
  • Dubai, United Arab Emirates: Residential and Hotel
  • Gurgaon Sector, India: Residential
  • Hyderabad, India: Residential
  • Noida, India: Residential
  • Pune, India: Commercial
  • Bali, Indonesia: Hotel and Golf
  • — And New/Not Listed…
  • Doha, Qatar: Trump International Golf Club
  • Vietnam: Golf Resort
  • Belgrade, Serbia: Hotel and condominium

The government watchdog group, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW), has compiled an even longer list of twenty projects that include some already in progress. And none in the U.S.

So you have to wonder, WTF is he afraid of? Why won’t he build a new hotel or golf course in Colorado or Louisiana or Pennsylvania? Does he know that he is a pariah in America where people don’t want to patronize his extravagant emporiums of elitism and glitz? Has he soured on U.S. investments after many of his current ones have removed his name and are losing money? Or does he just hate America and prefer foreign governments who will pay his ransom for financial favors?

Trump has not been shy about his grift operations. He has recently taken possession of a free 747 from Qatar. He is selling unlimited and untraceable investments in his phony cryptocurrency, mostly to foreign buyers. And while he is partnering with foreign governments and businesses, he is purposefully harming those in America.

Trump’s immigration policies are catastrophic for domestic farmers, factories, and other low wage industries. His economic policies are devastating the retail sector, and causing turmoil in the stock and bond markets. And he’s even persecuting colleges and universities that fail to succumb to his autocratic demands by canceling their grants, threatening to tax their endowments, and cutting off their access to foreign students, many of whom would likely become American entrepreneurs.

In short, virtually everything that Trump does seems designed to hurt America and Americans who refuse to kiss his…let’s say ring. It is a pattern of behavior that is decidedly not “America First.” His use of that slogan should be prohibited by truth in advertising laws. And if Trump had any interest in being honest, he would immediately have his Chinese factories retool to print his merch with “America Last” or “Trump First.”
