The American experiment in democracy has faced many challenges in the past 250 years. They include the founding War for Independence, a bloody civil war, a couple of world wars battling authoritarian regimes bent on global domination, and struggles with internal liberties that saw the assassinations of a beloved president and a revered civil rights leader. But has America ever faced the sort of threat represented by Donald Trump?

There is a strong possibility that historians will regard the current state of affairs in America to be equally as challenging as those that came before. The White House is currently occupied by a wannabe dictator who is openly defying the nation’s laws and principles in pursuit of his own domineering aspirations. His intentions are evident in his acutely narcissistic endeavors to remake America in his own perverse image. And his hunger for exaltation is insatiable.
SEE THIS: POOR BABY: Trump Whines that Polls Don’t Give Him Credit for ‘the Greatness of America’
In recent weeks Trump has actually had the gall to unlawfully attach his own name to the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the U.S. Institute of Peace, and various new egocentric antics such as plastering his face on National Park passes, giant banners hanging on federal buildings, and phony immigration Gold Cards.
Now it is being reported that Trump’s next target is the Smithsonian Institution, a renowned resource for historical information and an acclaimed museum of America’s past. Naturally, Trump is upset by what he regards as the Institute’s preservation of materials that document everything about America, including some things for which is understandably ashamed. As reported by CNN…
“The Trump administration has signaled to the Smithsonian Institution that the White House could withhold federal funding from the museum organization if it does not comply with the administration’s unprecedented, sweeping review.”
This is typical of the Mafia-style bullying that is such a familiar part of Trump tactics to get what he wants. Russell Vought, a co-author of the totalitarian playbook, Project 2025, and Trump’s White House director of the Office of Management and Budget, wrote in a threatening memo that…
“The American people will have no patience for any museum that is diffident about America’s founding or otherwise uncomfortable conveying a positive view of American history, one which is justifiably proud of our country’s accomplishments and record.”
So in the skewed perspective of Trump and his regime toadies, only America’s proud accomplishments should be preserved by a historical museum. Anything that reflects negatively on the nation – no matter how truthful – should be ignored and discarded. And if an honest and reputable museum declines to comply with that deliberate deceit, it should be starved of federal funding and allowed to be shutdown.
Of course, there is another option available. Trump could just appoint himself the chairman of the board of directors and force the institution to obey his irrational and dishonest edicts. In which case, it could then be renamed in Trump’s honor as the Trumpsonian Institution. This may actually be on Trump’s mind. Back in August he posted a comment to his failing Titter ripoff, Truth Social, that raged…
“The Museums throughout Washington, but all over the Country are, essentially, the last remaining segment of ‘WOKE.’ The Smithsonian is OUT OF CONTROL, where everything discussed is how horrible our Country is, how bad Slavery was.”
Right! We certainly wouldn’t want to preserve any part of American history that had the audacity to present slavery as something bad, would we? Trump went on to whine that the Smithsonian is too focused on the negative things in America’s past, and “Nothing about Success.” Which makes you wonder if he has ever even been to the Smithsonian.
In his anger he said that “I have instructed my attorneys to go through the Museums” to identify all of the bad things that should be removed. Notice that he didn’t give that instruction to historians or academics, but to his attorneys.
Trump wants the Smithsonian to capitulate to his demands in the same way that he has gotten some weak-kneed media companies, law firms, and universities, to do so. That’s how dictators roll. And if we allow him to get away with this, we can expect him to make ever more preposterous demands. If we’re not careful, pretty soon we could be saluting the flag of the United States of Trump. Gawd forbid!
