The United States is currently undergoing what may be the most dangerous period of its historically brief experiment in democracy. The second occupation of the White House by aspiring authoritarian Donald Trump is proving to be a case study in how dictators take over free nations.

Trump is using the playbook provided for him by the tyrannical despots that have preceded him. It’s a step-by-step instruction manual that lays out the process of undermining liberty and replacing it with oppression. Those steps include converting the military into a personal security force to protect the leader and persecute his enemies, suppressing the rights of free citizens to vote and engage in peaceful dissent, and clamping down on the free press in order to prohibit criticism and disseminate propaganda.

Trump’s official Ministry of Propaganda, aka Fox News, remains the primary distribution center for Trump-fluffing bullshittery. And at the top of the list of slobbering sycophants is Jesse Watters, a co-host of Fox’s “The Five,” a program named for it’s four glassy-eyed MAGA cultists and one lonely liberal.

On that program on Tuesday Watters told a story that he seemed to think would present him in a sympathetic light. It didn’t. He expressed his shock at the way he was treated by a passerby near his home. But then he was surprised by the response from the one liberal co-host on the program, Jessica Tarlov…

Watters: I was walking today, in my neighborhood, on my street. This car comes throttling down and he looks me right in the eye. He was already angry and he sees me and I give him a wave. Cause a neighbor I thought. And all of a sudden he passes me, screeches on the brakes, rolls down the window and says, ‘F U fascist.’ In my neighborhood. I swear to god this happened this afternoon. And I’m thinking to myself, he doesn’t know I’m a fascist!
Tarlov: Yes, he does. You’re on TV.
Watters: Do I come across as a fascist?
Tarlov: Yes!

Jessica Tarlov deserves credit for telling it like it is. She endures a great deal of abuse on that program as her rightist co-hosts constantly belittle and talk over her. But this time she managed to get some truth out and expose Watters to his face, and on his own show.

Still, you have to wonder why Watters was surprised. He seems like someone who would be used to being yelled at for being a fascist. However, in the retelling of this incident, Watters complains about the encounter saying that “He doesn’t know I’m a fascist.” To which Tarlov set him straight by pointing out that everybody knows. After all, he’s on TV everyday proving it.

What’s particularly notable about this exchange is that Watters doesn’t deny that he’s a fascist. In fact, his retort was not “Hey, I’m not a fascist.” It was “He doesn’t know I’m a fascist?” That’s how you phrase it when someone correctly assumes something about you, but you didn’t think other people could tell. For instance, if someone complimented your hairpiece, you might say “How does he know I’m wearing a toupee?”

So Watters is essentially confirming that he’s a fascist. Not that an objective person wouldn’t already know that. He always defends Trump’s most fascistic activities. Including deploying troops into American cities to suppress protesters, conducting regime change invasions of foreign countries, ordering his “Justice” Department to prosecute political foes, firing government lawyers and other civil servants who were not sufficiently worshipful of Trump, threatening the media with meritless lawsuits and even criminal actions, and Watters has been unreservedly supportive of Trump’s agenda of overt bigotry on the basis of race, gender, religion, and nation of origin.

So, yeah…Watters is a fascist. It really isn’t a very well kept secret. And Tarlov was right to point it out. Sadly, many Fox News viewers won’t care. But that’s only because they are fascists too.
