Poor Donald Trump is having a terrible birthday week. As he turns 80, Trump is struggling to stay awake for the various celebrations he planned for himself at taxpayer expense. Most notably his UFC cage match at the White House that dragged down the dignity and prestige of the property and the presidency, while enriching Trump and his wealthy pals.

The same week Trump bragged that he had resolved the reckless and illegal war with Iran that he started. But he did so in a manner that made Iran appear to be the victor. Trump got less for his trouble – including billions of dollars spent, and thousands of innocent lives lost – than President Obama did ten years ago without going to war.

In the wake of those birthday week unpleasantries, Trump’s vice-president, JD Vance, set off on a national book tour because he really doesn’t have anything else to do. One of his stops was a visit with the ladies of “The View” for a chat that he probably wishes he had avoided. A key part of the segment focused on Trump’s unsavory relationship with child sex trafficker, Jeffrey Epstein, that Vance was forced to defend. Which he did very poorly.
Vance began by disagreeing with “the idea that the White House wasn’t committed to full transparency” with regard to the release of the infamous Epstein files. Never mind that Trump and his flunkies in the “Justice” Department expressly blocked every attempt to release the files. Which Vance sought to deny…
Vance: One of the things you see in the Epstein emails is that Jeffrey Epstein hated Donald Trump. And that Donald Trump literally reported Jeffrey Epstein to the police.
Ana Navarro: They were best friends for about decade. And remember, he signed that Transparency Act under duress when some Republican women, congresswomen like Lauren Boebert, like Marjorie Taylor Greene, did not give into his pressure of not signing. He brought Lauren Boebert into the Situation Room to pressure her into caving on not voting for that bill.
Vance: Let me respond to that. number one is, yes, Donald Trump said this. He knew Jeffrey Epstein in the 1980s. He threw Epstein out of his club when he found out he was a creep and reported him to the police. […]
Navarro: It was allegedly over a real estate deal they got into a fight over. Let’s be truthful and transparent. They didn’t just know each other. They were incredibly close friends.
Vance: Ana made a very important point. This question about did Donald Trump release these files only under duress from Republicans? You know the Republican party probably better than I do. The idea that Donald Trump runs around afraid of Republican congressmen as opposed to the other way around, is kind of crazy. […] But he eventually came to say, “You know what, let’s just get everything out there. Let’s have this out in the public. And he actually called the senators. I was there. He called the senators and said, “Pass this bill. I will sign it” and that was it.

Navarro did a good job of holding Vance to account for his flagrant misrepresentations of reality. Vance’s claim that emails in the Epstein files proved that Epstein hated Trump completely leaves out the fact that they were close friends for more than a decade. And any animosity that later developed was due to conflict over a real estate deal.
What’s more, it was Trump’s anger that Epstein was “stealing” his girls from the Mar-a-Lago massage spa that resulted in Trump reporting Epstein to the police. It was only for retribution, not out of concern for the victims. Trump even admitted that it was the spa issue over which he banned Epstein from Mar-a-Lago.
As for the Transparency Act that Congress passed to compel the release of the Epstein files, Trump opposed that all the way. He never called senators and asked them to pass it. But he knew that there were enough votes for passage that it would be veto proof. So he signed it. Not because he was afraid of Republicans, but because he was afraid of looking even weaker after a veto override.
Vance has become the Undisputed Champion Trump-Fluffer. Having transformed from a critic who once said that Trump was “America’s Hitler,” to his current role as Trump’s chief derriere smoocher. Which is quite impressive considering all of the competition for that dishonor among the MAGA Republican cult. Congratulations JD. You’ve earned it.
