Breaking Up With Fox News: Guess Who’s Dumping The Network Now?

The YouGov survey group does periodic studies on the reputation and appeal of major businesses and services. It is an indicator of the brands that Americans prefer and regard with respect and esteem.

Included in the study is a breakdown of brand favorability by political party affiliation. Last year the survey had Fox News as the number one brand favored by Republicans above all others (including Chick-Fil-A). The strong showing by Fox was an affirmation of the dependency that conservatives have on an authority to give them direction and validation.

Fox News
No one, not even Republicans, like being lied to: Fox Nation vs. Reality

However, in the intervening year a lot has taken place that has deteriorated the bonds that Republican viewers had with their daddy network. They lost an election that Fox had assured them they would win in a landslide. They launched numerous investigations into alleged scandals that, despite Fox’s endless hype, failed to catch on with the public or to prove any malfeasance on the part of the president they despise. They pursued a doomed strategy to shut down the government and threaten to throw the nation into default in an effort to reverse time and make ObamaCare disappear. And they continue to suffer through a relationship with the acutely demented Tea Party whose disintegrating appeal hasn’t stopped them from launching pernicious primary challenges that will inevitably benefit Democrats.

Not surprisingly, the results of the new BrandIndex survey reflect these realities. While Fox News was number one among Republicans last year, it didn’t even make the top ten this year (and neither did Chick-Fil-A). The precipitous decline of Fox parallels falling poll numbers for the GOP, the Tea Party, and the Republican congressional leadership, to historic lows. So just as the Tea-Publican Party has fallen out of favor with the American people, Fox News has fallen out of favor with those who correctly recognize it as the Republican network.

Fox News was already the product of intense PR that fooled people into thinking it was a broadly popular and influential cable news network, when in fact it is only viewed by about 3% of the American population. Yet despite countless hours of programming, and millions of dollars worth of political promotions, Fox has been pitifully ineffectual at swaying public opinion in the last two election cycles. Perhaps that failure of its core mission has contributed to Republicans abandoning Fox and refocusing on more important matters like the “girliness” factor of the new Marine caps and imaginary threats lurking in ObamaCare.

Having lost the respect of the key demographic segment of its audience cannot be regarded as fortuitous in these months leading up to the 2014 midterm elections. However, in the end, some portion of the GOP faithful will surely return to the Fox fold. After all, where else can they go to get such adoration, affirmation, and {free) airtime?

  1. They may not have swayed VOTERS but they absolutely HAVE swayed the already disenfranchised in rural America .. to the point it has lead to OPEN posts by people in my county of Maine to demand we ‘execute the President’ and claim (paraphrasing on the next one .. closely) “Pastors are telling blacks to kill OUR babies and elderly. Get your guns ready”. It seems obvious the Tea Party has NO morals. They are turning those who NEED what the TP HATES into their own little army. If the VOTE doesn’t matter to the TP then ask yourself .. what IS their plan to gain control if not through the Democratic Process? THAT is a scary question.

    • Teabaggers are the American Taliban, without the brains. Their plan is to march into D.C. with pop guns to take on the most powerful military and intelligence organization on the planet on its home turf. I would do an HBO pay per view to see that.

  2. the owner of fox is an Australian , what would he care about the synergy of the american people….im sure its very profitable for him & his cronies to promote his/their destructive propaganda/agenda…..

    • Actually Fox is owned by an Australian Jew. The distinction is important as Fox supports AIPAC, the Israel lobby. This helps spread it’s propaganda, and distract Americans from the fact that 25% of ALL American foreign aid goes to Israel, and estimates have put the total amount of money GIVEN to Israel is about $27 million PER DAY.

If Americans actually knew this, and looked at what $27 Million PER DAY, or about $300 million per month, could do for their own communities, they would demand an immediate END to this incredible largess. That is why it is so important to keep Americans distracted, divided and squabbling over insignificant things while the gravy train goes on & on.

Recall that JFK forced AIPAC’s predecessor “The American Zionist Council” to register as a foreign lobby, thus stopping it from interfering with American elections, just like every other foreign lobby is prohibited from this. You see what happened to JFK…..

      • Today’s antisemitism comes to you from Makina Point

      • Yep – Haters gotta hate. The lie that Murdoch is Jewish is a long-held myth in the neo-Nazi crowd that is desperate to assign blame for all of societies ills and still thinks the media is controlled by Jews.

    • Actually Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal is the second largest share holder of Fox…. suck on that bit-o-truth

  3. Just to add a some facts to this rant.
    http://www.mediaite.com/tv/q3-2013-cable-news-ratings-fox-1-overall-msnbc-2-in-primetime-cnn-2-in-total-day/

Fox has lead all cable news networks for 141 months.
To suggest that it is a purely Republican shell or something to that effect is not true.
What this suggests is that more conservatives actually watch news shows than the highly “un-enlightened”, uneducated masses who would rather watch the latest TMZ or New Jersey Medium.

    Just a thought.

    • The fact that Fox is the top rated cable news net is not exactly breaking news. However, it is totally irrelevant to this discussion which is about brand appeal, not ratings.

    • actually, not only right wingers or republicans in general watch fox (i dont consider it a news channel). i watch it frequently for the laughs and im pretty sure im not the only one who does because its irresistible. remember just because you watch doesnt mean you believe or support the channel.i suspect most people just enjoy the comic relief. nowhere else on cable do you see a wretched cluster of negitivity. hatred, anger, lies and delusion in one place. you can feel the hatred flowing through your body after one dose of that channel. its remarkable. but its so enjoyable and amazing to see and laugh at because the crap they come up with is usually un-believably hiliarious. and it rakes in millions simply by broadcasting that anger and hate that radical right wing morons crave. afterall, thats what its all about in the end… cashing in from hate. and thats what fox does best

  4. Fox News has an average of about 2 million viewers per day. That’s less than 1% of the population. The three 24 hour news networks on average might draw 2% of the population, and the median age of those viewers is somewhere in the neighborhood of 60.

They’re not a representative sample. Nice try, though.

  5. If you want moderates to believe what your printing you need to come up with live video. I will not believe any media unless it’s live video.

  6. I so much enjoyed reading all these comments. Ignorant liberals doing what they do best, NAME CALLING. The difference between you and I is that I watch the news for education purposes and less for humor, just as the fine doctor said in the previous post.

    • Yes, for educational purp–oh excuse me, ‘education purposes’. Who needs an education when you have the 24hr news networks?
