It has long been observed that the most – or only – criteria for securing support from Donald Trump was demonstrating an unflinching and unyielding loyalty to Trump no matter how reprehensible his words and deeds. Glassy-eyed praise for Trump earns his affection. But even the mildest criticism triggers his wrath.

The degree of Trump’s egomaniacal dependence on fawning devotion has been evident in the Dear Leader Flagellation Forums …er… Cabinet meetings that he arranges where his subordinate sycophants take turns exalting His MAGA-sty in the most humiliating manner imaginable.

On Sunday morning Trump put his desperate need for approval on display again with a comment posted to his failing Twitter ripoff, Truth Social. this particular comment was a tedious 391 word rant complaining that Democratic representative Henry Cuellar of Texas didn’t switch parties and become a Trump suck-up after having received a pardon from him. Trump’s tirade is too lengthy and deranged to bother reposting in it entirety, so what follows are are few choice excerpts with annotations. Trump began by whining (of course)…
“Can you imagine??? The Democrats, under the Crooked Joe Biden Administration, who always use extreme force and jail-time to destroy their political opponent, wanted to put Congressman Henry Cuellar, and his wife, Imelda, in PRISON, for 15 years […] They were looking to destroy him, his lovely wife, his two young daughters. […] The Dems were vicious, and all because Henry strongly wanted, correctly, BORDER SECURITY!”
Can you imagine??? If not it’s only because none of what Trump is saying is remotely aligned with reality. At least 14 other Democrats, mostly in swing districts like Cuellar, have taken the same positions as Cuellar on the border. But the Party was not “looking to destroy” any of them, and none of them were indicted or otherwise subject to “extreme force and jail time.” Trump went on to explain his reasons for granting Cuellar a pardon…
“[H]is daughters wrote me a beautiful letter about their parents […] After reading it I decided, in the interest of justice, and based on the daughter’s loving request, that I would give Henry and Imelda a Full and Complete Pardon. I never spoke to the Congressman, his wife, or his daughters, but felt very good about fighting for a family that was tormented by very sick and deranged people […] God was very happy with me that day!”
So Trump is admitting that he didn’t do any due diligence to ascertain whether there was good reason to indict Cuellar, or whether he was guilty. The only thing that Trump based his pardon on was the emotional outpourings of Cuellar’s daughters, who might not have been especially neutral in their opinions. And for his negligence and pitifully easy manipulation he believes that he earned the approval of his “god” – aka himself.
For the record, Cuellar and his wife, Imelda, were charged with accepting nearly $600,000 in bribes from an Azerbaijani oil company and a Mexican bank, and laundering the money through shell companies. Then he allegedly used his influence to benefit these companies. Two of his political consultants pleaded guilty to the charges. Trump doesn’t appear to have taken any of that into consideration. He just raged further about what was truly bothering him…
“THEN IT HAPPENED!!! Only a short time after signing the Pardon, Congressman Henry Cuellar announced that he will be ‘running’ for Congress again…as a Democrat…Such a lack of LOYALTY…next time, no more Mr. Nice guy!”
And there you have it. Perceived loyalty is once again Trump’s only concern. He thinks that because he gave Cuellar a pardon, that Cuellar owes him his political devotion. It’s another transactional affair wherein Trump thinks that he’s buying loyalty, and that Cuellar stiffed him. And by the way, when has Trump ever been a “nice guy”?
The reality that Trump is ignorant of is that Cuellar, although he is a moderate/conservative Democrat, votes pretty consistently with his Party. In the 2021-2023 session of Congress, he voted with his fellow Democrats about 97% of the time. In 2024 that dipped to 71% – still a solid majority – likely because it was an election year and he represents a Republican leaning (R+2) district. His district is expected to get even redder after the recent racist and partisan gerrymandering by the Texas state legislature at Trump’s behest.
Cuellar was asked about Trump’s insane online outburst by Maria Bartiromo of Fox News, and the prospect of his switching parties. Cuellar affirmed that he’s a Democrat and that “I don’t vote party. I vote for what’s right for the country.” Which is a rational philosophy that neither Trump nor the GOP has ever been able to comprehend.
