The reckless and illegal war against Iran that Donald Trump started eight months ago is still in progress despite Trump’s repeated claims – at least a couple of dozen times – that he had defeated Iran seven months ago. So the war that he said wouldn’t last more than a few weeks has now been going on for more than half a year.

The consequences of Trump’s war are tragic for Iran, who has suffered thousands of civilian fatalities. It has been tragic for the 18 American troops who were killed, and hundreds more wounded. It has been tragic for the other Middle East nations that were drawn into the conflict. And it has been devastating for the American people who are struggling to make ends meet due to the war’s impact on the oil trade and resulting increases on everything from gas, to groceries, to healthcare, to housing, and more. And Trump has no idea how to get out of it.

On Saturday morning Trump was asked about a new proposal by Iran to end the war. They promised an immediate ceasefire, a complete opening of the Strait of Hormuz, and negotiations on ending their nuclear weapons programs, including allowing access for United Nations nuclear inspectors. Trump’s response was a blunt and hostile “NO!”
“I’m rejecting their deal. They want to make a deal where they open the strait immediately because they are losing so badly. You don’t see that in the fake news. We’re winning tremendously. We have total control of the Hormuz Strait. Massive amounts of oil are coming out of the Hormuz Strait, Last night we had 29 ships come out.
“They want to make a deal and I think that’s fine. I like making a deal too. But that deal would not be acceptable. What they want to do is immediately open the Hormuz Strait. You know why? Because they’re dying. You know why they’re dying? Because they have no money coming in. Because they get their money from the Hormuz Strait.”

Don’t bother trying to make sense of this tirade. Trump is rejecting the deal that gives him exactly what he has been asking for: opening of the Strait of Hormuz. Which he has also been saying is totally open. But also that it is being closed under the control of the U.S. Therefore, he’s turning down the deal because he’s “winning tremendously”?
For the record, Trump is lying about the “massive amounts of oil” coming out of the Strait. It’s actually down about 85% from pre-war volume. And 29 ships is about 10% of the traffic that went through before the war. Trump is also claiming that Iran is “dying” for lack of money, not because of the military assault waged by Trump, that he previously claimed had “obliterated” their army, navy, and air force.
So why would Trump reject a deal that gave him precisely what he has been asking for? Perhaps because he’s also lying about Iran having been been defeated. Perhaps because Trump has no cards to play, and submitting to the deal offered by Iran just makes him look weak. Especially because it’s a deal that returns us to exactly where we were before the war began, and under the terms of the deal brokered by the Obama administration that Trump tore up.
Trump is in a bind here. If he agrees to Iran’s deal, he reveals just how ineffective and incompetent he is. If he rejects it he remains embroiled in a war that the American people oppose and want him to end. And all of this is going down within five weeks of the consequential midterm elections that polls indicate will be a political bloodbath for Trump and his MAGA Republican Party.
It’s a lose-lose proposition for Trump and the GOP. But there are brighter days ahead for the American people if they remain focused and committed to change. Trump’s Reign of Error will be hampered if Democrats win majorities in Congress. And Trump will have to suffer through the final two years of his term as the lamest of ducks. LFG!
