From his earliest days in the political sphere, Donald Trump has displayed a disturbing affection for the world’s most brutal tyrants. His doe-eyed infatuation for Russian dictator Vladimir Putin is both nauseating and treasonous. And he feels compelled to frequently remind everyone that he has great relationships with Putin, as well as China’s Xi Jinping, and North Korea’s Kim Jong Un.

Now we can add Iran to the list of totalitarian despots that Trump admires and seeks to emulate. Particularly with regard to their persistence in power. This week Trump expressed his belief that he ought to be made America’s president-for-life because he’s just so damn good at everything.

Trump’s remarks concerning Iran were first posted to his dedicated propaganda platform, Truth Social, on Friday morning. He gushed that…
“I greatly respect the fact that all scheduled hangings, which were to take place yesterday (Over 800 of them), have been cancelled by the leadership of Iran. Thank you! DONALD J. TRUMP PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”
Well, isn’t that sweet? Trump is thanking Iran for not going forward with mass executions. Never mind that there is no evidence that any such executions were scheduled, or would even be possible to carry out in a single day. And set aside the fact that Iran still incarcerates thousands of political prisoners whose eventual fate may be death by hanging. Trump believes that the murderous mullahs of Iran deserve his high praise.
Trump is thrilled with his manufactured account of 800 potential hangings. However, long time Trump observers know that Trump pulled that number out of his assumptions based on whatever he wants to believe at the moment. Which is the same place that he gets his numbers for everything from immigrant crimes, to tariff receipts, to cost of living reductions, to windmill bird massacres, to scores on his unusually repetitive cognitive tests.
Those assumptions are what form the basis for all of Trump’s critical decisions. For example, he was asked Friday about who convinced him not to bomb Iran after promising to come to the rescue of Iranian protesters who are being slaughtered in the streets. While failing to fulfill that promise, he replied that…
“Nobody convinced me — I convinced myself. You had, yesterday, scheduled, over 800 hangings. They didn’t hang anyone. They cancelled the hangings. That had a big impact.”

So Trump assured everyone that he consults only with himself on the big issues that face the nation, including the prospects of war. Which is a frighteningly common occurrence with Trump who recently said that the only checks on his power are “My own morality. My own mind.” His advice to himself on this occasion was to double down on his phony 800 hangings malarkey. And since Iran supposedly canceled the hangings, it is now appropriate to thank them and to refrain from assisting the protesters who they are still killing.
Meanwhile, Trump is employing in Minnesota what he has learned from Iran about dealing with protesters. Which is to overwhelm them with military force, and kill them if necessary, in order to restore compliance with Dear Leader’s autocratic reign. Trump is, if nothing else, a quick study in authoritarian tactics and the oppression of any and all dissent.
Unfortunately for Trump, the American people are not going to subjugate themselves to his imperious domination. We are a nation born of freedom, and raised on liberty. And those principles are firmly ingrained in our culture and our laws. In the end, Trump and his MAGA-tists will fail, and will be held accountable for their crimes. That is the American way.
