Ted Cruz Tries to Smear Democrats for the ‘Most Egregious Gerrymanders’ but Fails Egregiously

California Governor Gavin Newsom has been engaged in a fierce battle with Republicans who are plotting to steal the upcoming elections in 2026 and 2028. The GOP is scheming to rig the elections by imposing an unprecedented and unconstitutional mid-census redistricting in Texas and other red states at the behest of Donald Trump.

To counter those moves by the GOP, Newsom is proposing that blue states like California do the same, unless the Republicans back off. In response to Newsom’s efforts, Republicans have tried to justify their election rigging by accusing Democrats of what the GOP is doing. It’s a wholly disingenuous argument coming from the people who started this redistricting war.

Among the Republicans who are trying to blame Democrats for the current political posturing is Texas senator Ted Cruz, who has made political posturing an art form. He posted a question on Twitter/X for Elon Musk’s AI bot, Grok, asking it to “Examine states with six or more congressional seats. Compile a list of the five most egregious gerrymanders.” Grok replied that it was both parties with Democrats being three out of the five…

That response didn’t really affirm that Democrats were more nefarious gerrymanderers, as Cruz had hoped. But neither was it a vindication of either party. So it seemed like it would be a good idea to expand the list beyond merely five states. And that produced a very different result…

The longer list shows that Republicans were the most egregious gerrymanderers in seven out of the top ten states. So Cruz was either deliberately distorting the results by limiting his question to five states, or he simply didn’t care to get a broader, more accurate view.

That’s typical of the modern, MAGA-infested Republican Party. They are purposefully seeking to deceive voters because they know that the truth will reflect badly on them. As Stephen Colbert once observed, “Reality has a well known liberal bias.”

This was confirmed last night by Fox News hack Sean Hannity, who complained about Newsom “spen[ding] the last several weeks bashing president Trump over the Texas redistricting fight while threatening to gerrymander his own state even more.” Hannity pretended to be concerned about whether this was helping or hurting Democrats. He concluded that it was hurting Newsom, despite polls showing Newsom’s approval rating surging since he began his redistricting fight and his hilarious, all-caps mockery of Trump’s Truth Social posts.

For good measure, Hannity also offered up his opinion of Newsom’s recent, more aggressive politicking. He criticized Newsom saying that his “performative confrontational style—maybe it wins you points with the loony radical base in your party but America is not going to vote for that record.” Does that description sound like anyone else you know?

The King of Conspiracy Theories Whines that Democrats Don’t Talk Enough About How Awesome He Is

In a profoundly bizarre press conference with the European Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, Trump repeatedly wandered off into unrelated tangents. His mental acuity is so damaged that he is unable to focus on any subject in detail for more than a few seconds. During one of these schizoid detours, Snowflake Trump complained that it is Democrats who are obsessed with conspiracy theories. Trump raged that…

“Our country was dead. We had a dead country. Because of an incompetent president and incompetent Democrats. All they know how to do is talk and think about conspiracy theories and nonsense. If they’d waste their time talking about America being great again, it would be so much nicer, so much easier.”

First of all, what Trump is describing as a dead country was anything but that. The economy was booming. Job creation was at record levels. And our international allies respected us. President Biden had restored the health and prosperity of the nation following Trump’s failures and his deadly mismanagement of the COVID pandemic.

More to the point. Trump’s accusation that the only things that Democrats want to talk about are “conspiracy theories and nonsense” is not only untrue, it’s a description of Trump’s rhetorical fixations. Recently Trump has been spewing nonsense about his relationship with child sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein, while making multiple, contradictory excuses for why he refuses to release the files in the custody of his Justice Department.

Furthermore, in a flagrant attempt to deflect from the Epstein matter, Trump and his crew have fabricated a ludicrous conspiracy that they say was orchestrated by President Obama to charge Russia with election interference. Those charges, however, were well documented and even agreed to by Republicans, including Trump’s Secretary of State, Marco Rubio.

Trump is the unchallenged King of Conspiracy Theories. In the past he championed the lies that Obama was a Muslim born in Kenya. He advocated the death penalty for five Black men who were falsely accused of murder. And his present adventures in conspiratorial intrigue even devolve into preposterous matters such as his demented preoccupation with the menacing horror of windmills that he promises to protect us all from.

Trump’s petulant whining about windmills is a heaping pile of bullpucky. He complains about them ruining the scenery, producing energy that is too expensive, being built only in China, and rotting in the fields. All of which are gross misrepresentations of reality. In the past he has said that they cause cancer, kill birds, and make whales go insane. More recently he lied that there are no windmills in China.

It remains one of the great mysteries of modern times how anyone can believe anything that Trump says, or support him as a leader. And it says something acutely depressing about a certain small segment of the American electorate. But on a positive note, Trump’s fumbling on the Epstein affair might just be shaking some of his cult followers out of their trance. Keep hope alive.

Trump’s Press Secretary, in a Rambling Defense, Fails to Say Trump is Not in the Epstein Files

AND THE PLOT SICKENS… Much to the dismay pf Donald Trump, the scandalous Jeffrey Epstein affair refuses to go away. Not that he and his White House cronies aren’t making a valiant effort to bury the story. For the past couple of weeks they have alternately claimed that the Epstein files would send many Democrats to prison; or that they don’t exist; or that they exist but were made up by Democrats, who then didn’t bother to use them. And that’s just for starters.

Donald Trump and Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt

The Trumpy excuses continued with claims that there is nothing significant in the files. But that the Democrats altered them, which would be illegal, but Trump and company still won’t release them, even to incriminate the Democrats. It all makes perfect sense – if you’re high on acid. And now Trump is outraged that his cult won’t STFU about the “bullsh*t” Epstein “hoax,” despite his demands that they do so. So he’s calling them “stupid,” “weaklings,” whose support he no longer wants. Never mind that it was a scandal manufactured and spread by Trump and his devotees in the first place.

This brings us to the next chapter in the Trump/Epstein soap opera. It stars Trump’s Secretary of Propaganda, Karoline Leavitt, who took some questions from the White House press corps, who still want Trump to come clean for once. And that includes this question from – of all people – Fox News White House correspondent, Jacqui Heinrich. She brought up Trump’s assertion that the Epstein files are a hoax, and asked “Which part of the “Epstein Hoax” is the hoax part?” Leavitt replied…

“The president is referring to the fact Democrats have now seized on this. As if they ever wanted transparency when it comes to Jeffrey Epstein. Which is an asinine suggestion for any Democrat to make. The Democrats had control of this building, the White House, for four years, And they didn’t do a dang thing when it came to transparency in regards to Jeffrey Epstein and his heinous crimes. It was this president who directed the Department of Justice and the Attorney General to do an exhaustive review of all files relating to Jeffrey Epstein. Which they did.”

Notice that what Leavitt is describing as the “hoax part” is the role that she says Democrats have played in the quest for Trump to release the information held by his Justice Department. She did not say that any allegations that Trump is on Epstein’s client list, or that he participated in the pedophile activity, are a hoax. That’s quite a damning omission. Are we now to assume that those things are true? Also, it isn’t just Democrats who have “seized” on this issue. In fact, it’s mostly Trump’s own cult disciples.

Leavitt’s explanation of the alleged transparency of the Trump regime is also an incoherent mess. If Democrats altered the documents in order to frame Trump, as Trump claims, why would they then withhold those documents? And if the Justice Department did “an exhaustive review,” as Leavitt claims, why would Trump refuse to release the documents following that review? Leavitt later added that…

“The Attorney General and the FBI, led by Pam Bondi, Dan Bongino, Kash Patel. These are great patriots. Some of the most trusted voices in the Republican Party movement. It’s part of the reason the president appointed them to these high law enforcement positions.”

Notice that Leavitt praises them as “trusted voices in the Republican Party movement,” not trusted voices in America, or in law enforcement. Her description of them as blatantly partisan makes them entirely inappropriate for the positions that Trump gave them. Then Leavitt closed by saying that…

“The president has been transparent. He has followed through on his promises to the American people. But he doesn’t like to see Democrats and the mainstream media covering this like it’s the biggest story the American people care about.”

First of all, Trump, by definition, has not been transparent, because he refuses to release the files. Secondly, he hasn’t kept his promises to the American people, because he promised to release the files. And finally, it’s no wonder that he doesn’t like to see the media covering this issue, because he knows what is in those files, which probably has something to do with why he refuses to release them. So maybe Trump should – oh, I don’t know – release the files? And maybe Leavitt should stop lying, for a change.

Trump’s job approval ratings are currently among the lowest of his modern predecessors. And with regard to the issues that he has deemed crucial, he is underwater on everything from immigration and deportations, to tariffs and trade, to foreign policy and the wars in Ukraine and Gaza, to the economy, and more, including his most recent debacle, the so-called “Big Beautiful Bill“ for billionaires and ballooning deficits.

Given the abysmal fate that is hovering over the MAGA GOP, Trump and his Republican cohorts are plotting to rig the 2026 elections in order to retain power. Texas governor Greg Abbott recently announced that he will be calling for a special session of the Texas legislature to force a rare mid-census redistricting. The purpose of which is to redraw the district maps to favor Republicans and oust Democrats. As reported by MSNBC…

“Trump has reportedly been leaning on Abbott to rejigger the state’s 38 congressional districts to help protect the slim Republican majority in the House ahead of the 2026 midterms. The president, terrified of a repeat of the 2018 midterms that opened the door to two impeachments against him, has zeroed in on even more extreme gerrymandering to limit Democrats’ midterm gains.”

Trump has good reason to be afraid. If Democrats regain majorities in the House and Senate, they have a cornucopia of corrupt practices by Trump and his cronies to investigate and to hold accountable where appropriate under the law.

However, the desperation move by Trump and Abbott may backfire on them. Firstly, because moving some Republicans into Democratic districts may not be enough to flip them from blue to red. Although it could make the previously safe red districts more vulnerable to flipping to blue.

What’s more, the GOP election manipulation plot in red states might result in reciprocal action in blue states. In fact, Gov. Gavin Newsom is already teasing that possibility for California. In a conversation with The Tennessee Holler, Newsom said (at 7:53)…

“I saw what Gov. Abbott did today, announcing a special session that will include redistricting. These guys aren’t f**king around. They’re playing by a totally different set of rules. And here I am in California trying to raise the bar of bipartisanship. Years and years ago we did independent redistricting in a state that I assure you – with two-thirds majorities in the legislature – could gerrymander like no other state. And we’ve been playing fair. When I saw what he did today, it made me question that entire program.”

Newsom concluded by warning that Republicans, who “have no shame and no limits,” are crossing a red line with threats to democracy. Which is a line that was actually crossed long ago. Trump frequently refers to Democrats – who represent at least half the country – as “evil” and “the enemy.” And more specifically, the Trump regime has attack Gov. Newsom in the most vile and anti-American way. For example, Trump’s White House Director of Communications, Steven Cheung, took a precarious leap into comparing Trump’s moral character with Newsom’s. Not a very smart move…

It’s always easy to tell who Trump is most afraid of. It is those who are the least afraid of him, and who will call him on his bullsh*t without hesitation. Newsom is emerging as one of the most courageous and effective Trump critics. Consequently, he will also be one of Trump’s most frequent targets. The problem for Trump is that Newsom is far more intelligent and is backed up by the truth. Trump would be wise to STFU for change. And since that would be wise, don’t expect it to happen.

Trump Goes Bonkers Ranting that Democrats Are ‘Evil, Nasty People Who Hate Our Country’

The deteriorating mental state of Donald Trump is becoming impossible to ignore, even for some of his most ardent sycophants. Not that they will muster the courage to challenge him. But there is clearly a widening gap between the explosive dia-rhetoric that Trump is disgorging, and what passes for reality amongst the rest of his party, and more broadly, the rest of America.

The unmooring of what remains of Trump’s sanity has been evident in his raving and deranged outbursts regarding the promotion of his wildly unpopular, so-called “Big Beautiful Bill” (BBB), that adds billions to the deficit and removes millions from their health insurance. It’s evident in the delusional math that he applies to his tariffs, that will be paid by American companies and consumers. It’s evident in his hype following the bombing of Iran, that he says “completely obliterated” their nuclear facilities, in contradiction of independent analysis and even his own intelligence staff.

Trump is so far removed from the real world that only his most devoted cult followers can accept his ludicrous lapses of cognition.

In a late night bout of hysterics on Saturday, Trump unleashed a rambling, incoherent eruption of animus toward his perceived enemies, who always seem to be fellow Americans. On this occasion it was Democrats who oppose his “Big Ugly Bullsh*t” that were on the receiving end of his unhinged wrath. He posted a comment on his failing Twitter ripoff, Truth Social, that was typical of his fevered hate-speech, saying that…

“Republicans must remember that they are fighting against a very evil, corrupt and, in many ways, incompetent (Policywise!) group of people.”

It’s notable that Trump only speaks this way about Americans. He would never say such things about Vladimir Putin or Xi Jinping. He went on lie that…

“The Democrats would LOVE to see the Biggest Tax Hike in History (68%!), No Border Spending (Open Borders!), and a weak, underfunded Military.”

Of course, none of that remotely resembles anything that Democrats have advocated. It’s all inventions of Trump’s diseased mind. And he wasn’t finished. He added a bizarre complaint that Democrats “have House and Senate Rules that give Great Power to their Leaders – Committee Chairmanships.” But as Democrats are currently in the minority in Congress, they aren’t making the rules and they have no committee chairmanships at all.

Trump then segued to bragging about his fellow MAGA Republicans that he said are “wonderful people and phenomenal Policy, and that should win Elections every single time!” That came as he was simultaneously trashing GOP senators Thom Tillis and Rand Paul for not voting for his BBB. Then Trump posted another comment railing against Democrats “because they’re nasty people who actually hate our Country.”

Trump’s demeaning of Democrats as hating the country is another example of his psychotic projection, wherein he accuses others of having his own emotional maladies. Trump has demonstrated repeatedly that he has a propensity for hatred. He hates the Constitution that he regularly dismisses and defiles. He hates America’s allies, but loves its enemies. But most of all, he hates his fellow Americans. Whether they be Democrats, Republicans, or independents. Why else would push legislation down our throats that majorities of the people don’t want?

This is what the America people think of the so-called "Big Beautiful Bill" that Trump and the GOP are shoving down the nation's throat. Note that even the Fox News poll has it underwater by 21 points.

Trump FREAKS OUT Over a Democrat’s Bill to Impeach Him (Again), And He Can’t Figure Out Why

From Trump’s unlawful dismantling of critical government agencies that literally save lives, to his disregard for the Constitution and defiance of judicial orders, to his threats against and suppression of the free press, his second term is a straight up embrace of the totalitarian rule that he envies as practiced by his idols and role models Vladimir Putin, Xi Jinping, and Kim Jong Un. Which isn’t really working out for him.

Consequently, it isn’t particularly surprising that an understandably concerned Democratic member of Congress, Rep. Shri Thanedar (D-MI-13), has drafted a set of Articles of Impeachment in an attempt to save America from the certain harm that Trump is causing and seeks to exacerbate going forward. To be sure, it may be a well intentioned, but Sisyphean effort considering that Republicans control Congress for the time being. But a challenge not accepted is always lost.

You have to start somewhere. And this beginning is at least serving the purpose of pissing off Trump, and triggering a late night tantrum as his frantic response. Just before midnight on Thursday, Trump posted a long and rambling comment on his failing Twitter ripoff, Truth Social, that displayed just how troubled he is by this attempt at a third impeachment, that he bizarrely complained was the twentieth. He began by whining that…

“The Democrats are really out of control. They have lost everything, especially their minds! These Radical Left Lunatics are into the ‘Impeachment thing’ again…even though they have no idea for what I would be Impeached.”

Following that childish rant, Trump rattled off a bunch of incidents – mostly fabrications contrived by his diseased brain – that he thinks are problems for Democrats, including his relentless repetition of “Russia, Russia, Russia,” which actually refers to his well documented and unsavory associations with, and favoritism toward, his mentor, Vladimir Putin. Then he continued…

“These Congressmen stated that, they didn’t know why they would Impeach me but, ‘We just want to do it.'”

Of course, no one ever stated any such thing. But he uses that lie to call for “expelling them from Congress for all of the crimes that they have committed.” And naturally, he doesn’t bother to identify a single one of those alleged, imaginary crimes. But he does lash out like a whiny baby calling them “total LOWLIFES, who hate our Country.”

Trump closed by reprising an attack on an old nemesis who still resides rent-free in the Mar-a-Lardo atop his turkey neck…

“Remember, “Shifty” Adam Schiff demanded a Pardon…for him and the Unselect Committee of Political Thugs.”

Once again, Trump is lying. Neither Schiff, nor any of the members of the House Committee Investigating the January 6th Insurrection, “demanded” or even asked for a pardon. Biden alone made the wise decision to issue the pardons that Trump’s vengeful behavior has fully justified. After all, he is still calling for them to be persecuted as “treasonous.”

For the record, the most recent Articles of Impeachment against Trump by Rep. Thanedar belie Trump’s deranged assertion that “they have no idea for what I would be Impeached.” In fact, the seven articles were clearly spelled out in unambiguous detail…

  1. Obstruction of Justice and Abuse of Executive Power: Including denial of due process, unlawful deportations, defiance of court orders, and misuse of the Department of Justice.
  2. Usurpation of Appropriations Power: For dismantling congressionally established agencies and impounding federal funds.
  3. Abuse of Trade Powers and International Aggression: Including imposing economically damaging tariffs and threatening military invasion against sovereign nations.
  4. Violation of First Amendment Rights: Through retaliatory actions against critics, media, and attorneys exercising constitutionally protected speech.
  5. Creation of an Unlawful Office: By establishing the Department of Government Efficiency (“DOGE”) and unlawfully empowering Elon Musk to unilaterally violate the Constitution.
  6. Bribery and Corruption: Involving dismissing criminal cases, soliciting foreign emoluments, and extortionate settlements for personal and political gain.
  7. Tyrannical Overreach: Seeking to consolidate unchecked power, erode civil liberties, and defy constitutional limits on presidential authority.

What could be clearer? If Trump still doesn’t understand what the grounds for his impeachment are, perhaps that should be the eighth article. Or at least grounds for invoking the 25th Amendment.

Unsatisfied with stomping on the rights of migrants to due process, or the rights of universities to academic freedom, or the rights of lawyers to practice, or the rights of journalists to report the truth, Trump is now threatening his political opponents with harassment and persecution from his grossly corrupt Department of Justice. Is it just his latest attempt to declare himself America’s first president-for-life?

On Sunday morning Trump posted yet another unhinged screed on his failing Twitter ripoff, Truth Social. This time he intended to disparage the Democratic fundraising website, ActBlue, with wholly unfounded allegations of election finance fraud. However, as usual, his tantrum was fueled by ignorance and loaded with lies. He began by passively ordering his Attorney Genuflect, Pam Bondi, to investigate Actblue…

“Hopefully ACTBLUE, the Democrats ILLEGAL SCAM used to raise money, including from not allowed ‘foreign contributions,’ is being looked at by authorities. The Dems only know how to win by CHEATING, something which they do better than any group or party in history.”

This is a thinly veiled instruction to Bondi to commence a meritless probe meant only to hobble the fundraising efforts of the Democratic Party. And it was jampacked with the familiar projection that Trump employs when he is trying to tarnish others with the sort of crimes that he engages in. He continued…

“But now, with their terrible policies and candidates, and with people like Crooked Adam Schiff, who demanded a full Pardon from Sleepy Joe, leading the way, it is almost impossible to reach their money goals. The USA is wise to these scoundrels and crooks.”

This is a bizarre Trumpian cocktail of wishful thinking and straight-up lies. Not only is ActBlue succeeding in its mission to help Democrats raise money, they are reaching new heights of success, partially thanks to Trump himself. As reported by The New Republic (TNR)…

“The Trump administration’s decision to target ActBlue has instead resulted in the left-leaning platform’s biggest fundraising day of the year.”

And as for Trump’s charge that ActBlue was taking in improper foreign donations, TNR reports that…

“Conservatives have repeatedly claimed that ActBlue was acting as a conduit for foreign contributions. In December, an analysis of the fundraising network’s records by Republican Representative Bryan Steil not only failed to advance the theory but instead found proof that the platform’s automated program to reject donations from foreign nationals was working effectively.”

Furthermore, Politico reported that…

“‘ActBlue raised $400 million in the first three months of 2025 alone, the biggest fundraising total in the first quarter of a non-presidential or midterm election year ever,’ the organization said.”

So thanks for the funding boost, Donnie. In closing, Trump took a wild swing at one of his favorite targets, Sen Adam Schiff…

“Also, why did the Auto Pen give Schiff a Pardon? Biden knew nothing about it. Who operated the Auto Pen? That is the biggest question being asked in D.C. They almost destroyed our Country. They should all be in jail!!!”

Setting aside Trump’s childish insults, Trump asks why Biden gave a Schiff a pardon. But he actually answers his own question when he adds emphatically, and without any evidence of wrongdoing, that “They should all be in jail!!!” Yeah, that’s exactly why Biden gave pardons to Schiff and the other members of the House Committee to Investigate the January 6th Insurrection. Because a rabidly vengeful Trump has been dead set on persecuting them and has even accused them of “treason.”

Trump’s attack on ActBlue is nothing less than an effort to rig the upcoming elections in 2026 and 2028. He would like to starve the Democratic Party of funds to mount a campaign. But his glassy-eyed rage is turning out to be working against him. The American people recognize the hideousness of Trump’s aspirations to autocracy, and they are not going to stand for it.

The presidential election of 2024 was an extraordinarily momentous and peculiar affair in the history of the United States. It pitted the first Black Vice-President, Kamala Harris, against the first convicted felon, adjudicated rapist, and openly authoritarian aspirant, Donald Trump.

Trump’s craving for unchallenged dictatorial powers has been evident in his extremist rhetoric that embraces the sort of strongman reign enjoyed by his heroes, Vladimir Putin, Xi Jinping, and Kim Jong Un. He shamelessly advocates for reforms that give him sway over the other co-equal branches of government. He threatens to silence the free press. He ignores the Constitution and its limits on executive power. And he isn’t shy about declaring his supremacy over the whole of government, as he did explicitly in his inauguration address.

Throughout much of the 2024 campaign, Democrats staunchly stood up for democracy and the principles that have defined American freedom for more than two centuries. They emphatically warned of the dangers posed by Trump’s pursuit of a neo-fascist agenda inspired by another one his idols, Adolf Hitler, whose book of speeches Trump kept at his bedside, according to his ex-wife.

The Trump v Hitler comparisons practically wrote themselves. And Trump did little to discourage them. In fact, he seemed to regard them as compliments. Both Harris and President Biden spoke movingly about Trump’s threat to democracy and affinity for fascism. However, after the election, all of that seemed to evaporate. Biden and Harris attended Trump’s inauguration and greeted Trump to the White House. These absurd pleasantries were notice by Charlamagne tha God in a segment on Thursday’s episode of “The Daily Show” (video below)…

“What about the Democratic politicians who spent four years calling Trump the new Adolf Hitler, and then started doing stuff like this. I’m sorry. If you tell us someone is Hitler, you have to at least act like he’s Hitler. […] In fact, here’s the energy I wanted to see more of on Monday:

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez: All these journalists are, like, Congresswoman, are you going to the inauguration? Let me make myself clear. I don’t celebrate rapists. So no, I’m not going to the inauguration.

“See? That’s right. That right there, that’s backbone. That’s principle. Man, I’m gonna miss AOC when she’s deported to Nicaragua.

“Listen man…Donald Trump won this election by a little over two million votes and Democrats are acting like he’s unstoppable. Do you remember how Republicans acted when Biden won by seven million votes? […] They tried to impeach Biden from day one for the crime of getting elected. I like that energy though. They weren’t worried about alienating Democrats. They said f**k Democrats. They riled up their base and it worked. Today Democrats are patting themselves on the back for allowing a peaceful transfer of power. And I have no problem with conceding the election. But don’t concede the Constitution.

“Democrats, I am begging you. For once, treat Republicans the way they treat you. And treat Trump as if you believed that everything you’ve said about him is true.”

‘Nuff said! Democrats, we’re all begging you. Trump is an imminent threat to democracy. He’s a foaming-at-the-mouth fascist. and we all need to treat him like one.

Joe Biden and Donald Trump on New Year's Day

Well, almost everyone. True to form, Donald Trump is plagued by his persistent fits of distemper and hostility aimed at the armies of perceived enemies that he imagines are converging to destroy him. While others are preparing for parties and good times with loved ones, Trump generally celebrates holidays like these with infantile attacks on the conspirators plotting against him, such as his message last year…

“HAPPY NEW YEAR to all of the Radical Left Democrats, Marxist Lunatics, China loving Coco Chow and her Obedient Husband, Mitch, and Clueless RINOS, who are working so hard to DESTROY our once great Country.”

Heartwarming, isn’t it? This year Trump continues to focus on the tribulations of his miserable existence. For someone who is always bragging about his wealth and success at everything he does, he sure seems to complain a lot. And on New Year’s Eve morning Trump was furious that the Senate, whose constitutional duty it is to provide “advice and consent” to presidential nominees, actually has the audacity to plan confirmation hearings. Trump raged that…

“We just won a Historic Landslide and Mandate from the American People, but Senate Democrats are organizing to improperly stall and delay the confirmation process of many of our Great Nominees. They will try all sorts of tricks starting very soon. Republicans must not allow them to do that. We have a Country to run, and many big problems to solve, mostly created by Democrats. REPUBLICANS, BE SMART AND TOUGH!!!”

Let’s begin to unpack that harangue by noting that Trump’s claim to have “won a Historic Landslide and Mandate” is a flagrant lie. The margin of victory over Vice-President Kamala Harris was a mere 1.6%, one of the narrowest margins in modern history. Consequently, the only mandate he has is in his ego-warped, cartoon brain.

The remainder of Trump’s rant addresses his outrage that Democrats in the Senate, and even a few Republicans, intend to hold confirmation hearings to assess the suitability of Trump’s Cabinet and White House nominees. And no wonder he’s upset. His nominees are profoundly unqualified, inexperienced, and utterly unfit for the jobs that Trump nominated them to perform. Many of Trump’s nominees are, in fact, downright hostile toward the departments they are being asked to run. For instance…

  • Robert F. Kennedy Jr, Trump’s nominee for Secretary of Health and Human Services, advocates terminating most of the experts at the Food and Drug administration, the Centers for Disease Control, and the Centers For Medicare and Medicaid Services.
  • Kash Patel, his nominee for FBI Director, has promised to go after the media as well as members of the Bureau for imaginary crimes against Trump.
  • Pete Hegseth, his nominee for Secretary of Defense, has advocated on behalf of soldiers convicted of war crimes.
  • Pam Bondi, his nominee for Attorney General, says she will prosecute the U.S. attorneys under her in the Justice Department.
  • Linda McMahon, his nominee for Secretary of Education, has called for the Education Department to eliminated.

In Trump’s mind, the hearings themselves are “improper” and meant to stall the consecration of his blindly loyal apparatchiks. He believes that Democrats are engaging in “tricks” by inquiring into the qualifications of Trump’s flunkies. And he is beseeching his fellow Republicans to prohibit the Senate from fulfilling their Constitutional duties.

These are the demands of an aspiring authoritarian who seeks unchallenged power and unflinching fealty to Dear Leader. And the fact that Trump is obsessing over this on a day that most other Americans are celebrating the new beginnings of a new year tells you just how serious he is about exalting himself as the this new year unfolds.

Trump must not be allowed to prevail in this wholly un-American perversion of democratic principles. The American people must resist his assault on our Constitution and the liberties it provides. And the resistance begins right after we’re done partying and celebrating the turning of the calendar’s page. HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYBODY!

Some Democrats are Planning to Boycott the Inauguration of Trump. Here’s a Better Idea!

In a little more than a month, Donald Trump will stand on the steps of the Capital that he sent his StormTrumpers to assault about four years ago in an attempt to undermine democracy. While there he will lie that he swears to “preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.” That’s the same Constitution that he has said that he wants to terminate.

Donald Trump Hugs Flag

Six weeks after Election Day and it’s still hard to comprehend how even a razor-thin slice of American voters could have chosen to allow Trump to reoccupy the White House. Those who voted for Trump managed to set aside that he is a convicted felon and adjudicated rapist who tried to overthrow the government. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. The list of Trump’s malfeasance and immorality is long and loathsome.

There are now reports that some Democratic members of Congress are planning to boycott Trump’s inauguration. It is totally understandable why they would consider passing up what, under normal circumstances, would be a celebration of democracy and the peaceful transfer of power. But there will be nothing to celebrate next month when an unambiguously anti-American huckster assumes the leadership of the country. As Axios reports…

“More than a dozen congressional Democrats plan to sit out President-elect Trump’s inauguration, and many more are anxiously grappling with whether to attend, Axios has learned. […] For many Democrats, the scars of the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol remain fresh in the mind, marking Trump as a threat to democracy.”

However, as justifiable as it would be to snub Trump’s swearing in, there is another option that might make more sense. Turn it in to a “swearing at.” Democrats, and other patriots, could attend the inauguration and transform it into a protest. They could carry signs reminding the American people that Trump is an ethical nightmare and a criminal. They can even cause a peaceful disruption when he attempts to lie about preserving and protecting the Constitution.

What’s more, they could follow up the inaugural ceremony by remaining at the Capital after Trump leaves to pay tribute to the law enforcement officers who were injured or died as a result of the January 6th insurrection that Trump incited. And they could even incorporate a memorial to Martin Luther King Jr., whose holiday just happens to coincide with Inauguration Day.

We need to find creative ways to respond to the horror of having to endure another four years of Trumpism. We need to find reasons to be positive and productive as we resist his aspirations for a dystopian dictatorship. And that can all begin on day one of Trump 2.0, right on the Capital steps. Trump’s inauguration would be a great place to demonstrate to the nation and the world that he’s a loathsome cretin who most Americans despise. LFG!
