The decaying psychological stability of Donald Trump has been evident for years. His incoherent babbling about everything from windmills causing cancer, to nuking hurricanes, to injecting bleach as a cure for COVID, is symptomatic of someone who has completely lost touch with reality. The American people recognized this during the 2020 election when a majority said that he didn’t have the mental soundness to serve And that was a Fox News poll.

On Sunday Trump took the stage in Nebraska at his latest cult rally. This event was ostensibly to promote Charles Herbster, a Republican candidate for governor of Nebraska. Herbster received Trump’s endorsement even after the disclosure of numerous allegations of sexual misconduct. Birds of a feather, and all that. But true to form, Trump couldn’t manage to stay on topic for very long.

Trump predictably reprised his delusional assertions that the 2020 election was “rigged,” and that he had won by a landslide. But he also drifted off into a discussion about other pet candidates that he had endorsed in other states. Among them was someone named JP, or JD Mandel. Trump yammered that…

“We’ve endorsed Dr. Oz. We’ve endorsed JP, right? JD Mandel. And he’s doing great. They’re all doing good.”

The only problem with that is that there is no candidate with that name. Trump had mashed together the names of Ohio GOP senate primary candidates Josh Mandel, who Trump did not endorse, and JD Vance, who he did endorse. But with this comment he reveals that he doesn’t know who the heck he endorsed.

Ironically, this mental screw up came during the same speech wherein he sought to malign President Biden’s state of mind. That’s something that he and Fox News do frequently with blatantly distorted videos. During Trump’s rally rant he took some time out to make fun of Biden for stuttering, a speech impediment that he has had since childhood:

Trump: Just look at the video of Joe Biden trying to speak last week – very tough – to Russia and Putin. Look at this.
Biden Video: That will enhance our underlying effort to accommodate the Russian oligarchs. And make sure we take their…take their ill begotten gains. We’re gonna accommodate them. We’re gonna seize their yachts, their luxury homes, and other ill begotten gains of Putin’s kleptoc… kleptocracy…the guys who are in the kleptocracy. These are bad guys.
Trump: And it got worse, but we don’t have all afternoon. Once and for all Biden should put the question to rest by taking a cognitive test. You have to do it. And releasing the results for the entire world to see.

So Trump is, once again, referring back to one of the most humiliating episodes of his public life. Just a couple of weeks ago Trump thought it would be a good idea to remind people that he had taken a “very tough” test for dementia that required him to identify an elephant and recall five words. He bragged that he had “aced it,” a feat that he said astonished his doctors. Of course, none of that is true.

It is a perfect example of Trump’s cognitive deficiency, as well as his hypocrisy, that he unleashed a callous and inappropriate attack on Biden’s speech impediment cloaked in a lie about his mental health, during the same speech that he revived memories of his own cerebral meltdown. And he thinks that these sort of infantile political insults will benefit whoever it is he’s trying to boost in the senate race in Ohio. But the only person this is likely to help is Tim Ryan, the Democrat that they will likely face in the general election. Thanks Donnie!
