Presidents throughout history have had some rocky relationships with the free press. It’s a natural conflict given the media’s mission to report truthfully about everything that a political leader does and says, and the leader’s determination to always present a positive image.

However, no president has had as hostile an attitude toward the media as Donald Trump, who frequently refers to them in Stalinist terms as “the enemy of the people.” Trump’s animus toward honest journalism is evident in his knee-jerk and meritless lawsuits, and his infantile insults. Just this week Trump has maligned reporters as “creeps,” “stupid,” and “ugly,” just because they dared to tell the truth about him.

In a desperate response to the consistently bad press that Trump gets and deserves, he had his White House social media flunkies develop and post a new web page on the White House website. It is ostensibly a page intended to track what Trump regards as media bias. Although what it is in reality is just another platform to exhibit his hatred for the free press.

The White House web page currently features as its top alleged exposé, under the headline “MEDIA OFFENDER OF THE WEEK,” a story about the recent video that several members of Congress – all veterans of the military or intelligence community – who reminded American soldiers that the Uniform Code of Military Justice requires them not to obey an illegal order.

However, the video posted on Trump’s page is an edited version that inserts a text stamp declaring that the patriots in the video are “SEDITIOUS” because “The president has never given an illegal order.” Which is patently false. Trump has issued numerous orders that have been deemed illegal by federal courts and judges, including some who were appointed by Trump.

The web page then goes on to what it calls its “Offender Hall of Shame: A Record of the Media’s False and Misleading Stories Flagged by The White House.” In this section it simply complains about stories by news organizations that Trump has already demeaned for failing to be unflinchingly adoring and supportive. They include the Washington Post, CBS News, CNN, and MSNBC (MS NOW).

There is also a section on “Repeat Offenders” with 21 news sources listed. But it doesn’t include the Trump-fluffers at Newsmax, One America News, or Fox News. For the record, Fox is the only “news” enterprise that has paid out 3/4 of a billion dollars to settle a defamation lawsuit for having lied on behalf of Trump.

It is profoundly improper for the White House to post a web page that does nothing but attack media outlets that Trump disagrees with. It is the sort of thing that only occurs in authoritarian regimes like Russia and North Korea. But then, since those are the countries and leaders that Trump most admires and seeks to emulate, this shouldn’t surprise anybody.
