Trump Calls All Rich Kamala Harris Supporters ‘STUPID’ in a Weird Appeal to Affluent Voters

The base of support for Donald Trump has been a pretty steady third of the electorate since his transition from a reality TV game show host to a grifting politician and convicted felon. It’s a sad state of affairs that that many Americans could fall for the obvious demagogic sham that he presents, But there has always been a wingnut contingent swirling around in the far right fringes.

Trump Baby on Cash Pile

Trump unexpectedly managed to squeak out a narrow victory in 2016 with the help of the perverse and undemocratic Electoral College. He hasn’t been able to repeat that feat ever since. And in each of his races he has lost the popular vote by millions of voters. Part of the reason that Trump has failed to expand his base is that he hasn’t even bothered to try. To the contrary, he descends ever deeper into the muck and makes bizarre statements that certify his mental defects.

On Sunday morning Trump reached out to the faction of his base to which he is most devoted: The Wealthy! They form the core of his confederacy and the foundation of the GOP (Greedy One Percent). His message to them was posted to his failing social media scam, Truth Social, saying that…

“All rich, job creating people, that support Comrade Kamala Harris, you are STUPID. She is seeking an UNREALIZED TAX ON CAPITAL GAINS. If this tax actually gets enacted, it guarantees that we will have a 1929 style Depression. Perhaps even the thought of it would lead to calamity – But at least appraisers and accountants would do well!”

That’s a decidedly weird way to attract high income voters. But make no mistake, this is Trump’s method of appealing to – or threatening – America’s aspiring oligarchs in order to shift them into his corner. He thinks that by insulting them he can persuade them to abandon Kamala Harris and back him and his agenda that favors corporations and the rich.

To that end, Trump cited Harris’ proposal to shape a more equitable tax code. Of course, Trump’s description is typically ignorant and illiterate. It is not an “unrealized tax” on capital gains. That doesn’t even make sense. She is proposing a tax on unrealized capital gains. And it is a prudent reform that requires wealthy investors to pay their fair share of taxes.

However, Trump would let the rich slide, just as he has done on other taxation matters, lowering the rates for the wealthy, at the expense of everyone else, and exploding the national debt in the process.

What’s more, it wouldn’t be a Trump threat if it didn’t include a frantic warning about an imminent “1929 style Depression,” or some other pending catastrophe that exists only in his warped imagination. He has been using his predictions of a Depression for years to frighten his cult followers and stir fears of a societal collapse at the hands of Democrats. Never mind that the economy historically performs better when Democrats are in charge.

If Trump thinks that he’s going to win back the support of well off Americans by calling them “stupid,” then he is…well, stupid. He’s only helping them to affirm that their decision to support Harris was the correct one. And his insults and childish tantrums are likely to disgust and alienate other fat cats, who may already be on edge fearing the immigrants that Trump has said are hankering to eat them.
