The Calamity in Minneapolis orchestrated by Donald Trump and his Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) StormTrumpers has proven to be massive millstone around the neck of Trump and his regime’s top henchmen and women. On an issue that Trump had leaned on heavily throughout his political misadventures, he is now deeply underwater and struggling to find a way to stay afloat.

Recent surveys show that Trump’s approval on immigration is floundering at record lows. According to the Reuters/Ipsos poll “Fifty-three percent of Americans polled disapprove of the president’s immigration policy, while 39% approve of the job Trump is doing on immigration.” And no amount of gaslighting or whitewashing has helped to reverse the descent.

Consequently, Trump has been tenderly trying to walk back the rancid rhetoric that he has been yammering from day one of the horrific events in Minnesota, when he and his cronies smeared Alex Pretti as a “would be assassin” and “domestic terrorist.” He knows that the American people are repulsed by the deaths of peaceful, law abiding citizens, and that his attempts to viciously malign them have failed. But rather than admit any wrongdoing, or holding anyone accountable, Trump is trying to massage his messaging campaign to take the heat off of him without making any actual improvements.
Clearly Trump has no idea what to do. That’s why he has been waffling between blanket defenses of the atrocities he has caused, and pitiful stabs at displaying sympathy. The only marginally substantive reform he has taken is to cast his chief ICE enforcer in Minneapolis, Greg Bovino, into the corn field. But even that idea was not Trump’s. As reported by Brian Stelter of CNN…
“Around 6:15 a.m. on Monday, ‘Fox & Friends’ co-host Brian Kilmeade pitched a solution to President Trump’s growing political problem in Minnesota. ‘What I would do is just bring Tom Homan in,’ he said.
“Kilmeade, a Trump booster who knows the president often watches the morning show, volunteered the idea again at 7:15 and once more at 8:10. Homan, the border czar and a former Fox commentator, would ‘settle things down’ and help Trump, Kilmeade said.
“Maybe Trump was watching, maybe he wasn’t — but either way, he said, ‘I am sending Tom Homan to Minnesota tonight,’ 20 minutes after Kilmeade suggested it a third time.'”
So it appears that Kilmeade put the bug in Trump’s ear about replacing Bovino with Homan, and he embraced it in the hopes that it might ease the pain of sinking farther into the abyss of public disgust. Never mind that Homan is just as unsavory as Bovino, and he still has a corruption scandal hanging over his head alleging that he took a $50,000 bribe in exchange for delivering government favors.
The public’s view of Trump’s immigration policies has now deteriorated to the point that other Republicans are starting to show some spine by criticizing him. Actually, they are just getting to the point where they are more afraid of voters than they are of Trump. The result is that some – but certainly not all – are speaking out more critically of him than ever before.
Even some conservative media are turning against Trump. For instance, the right-wing National Review editorialized that “[Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem] has repeatedly demonstrated that she is incapable of speaking honestly about events like the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti.” Which suggests that Trump’s critics on his own side won’t be satisfied until there are some terminations, indictments, or other form of accountability. And decent American citizens won’t be satisfied until Trump himself is held to account.
