Fox News Loses Bid to Halt Gavin Newsom’s Defamation Lawsuit for Knowingly Spreading Trump Lies

The mission of Fox News to act as the Ministry of Propaganda for Donald Trump has produced some of the most blatantly dishonest “reporting” ever published by a media outlet. The network shamelessly defends whatever Trump does no matter how bizarre or unlawful, and regurgitates whatever he says without regard to his deliberate diversions from reality.

Donald Trump and Gavin Newsom

As a result of Fox’s abandonment of any shred of journalistic ethics, they were forced to settle a defamation lawsuit with Dominion Voting systems for a whopping $787 million dollars. It might be reasonable to assume that that sort of penalty would dissuade Fox News from repeating their deceitful practices. But to Fox News that’s just the cost of doing their brand of disreputable business. And just a couple of years later they were at it again…

SEE THIS: Gov. Gavin Newsom is Suing Fox News for $787 Million for Lying About a Phone Call with Trump

That’s right, California Gov. Newsom filed a defamation lawsuit against Fox News seeking precisely the same amount in damages from Fox as they settled for in the Dominion case. It all stems from an episode wherein Jesse Watters – the undisputed stupidest man on Fox News – flagrantly lied about an alleged phone call between Newsom and Trump.

Newsom’s case revolves around a Trump claim that Trump called Newsom to tell him that he was “doing a bad job” handling protests against ICE, and that “Los Angeles would be burning” if he had not deployed the National Guard. However, not only did Trump never deliver that message, he never even made that phone call.

Undeterred by the truth, Watters played an edited clip of Trump’s claims and asked, “Why would Newsom lie and claim Trump never called him?” The show also displayed a chyron that said “Gavin Lied About Trump’s Call.” Those were the words of Watters making an allegedly factual representation of what took place. But the record is clear that Newsom wasn’t the one that was lying about the call. And that was even confirmed in Watters’ own segment where he displayed a screenshot of Trump’s actual call history.

In other words, Watters and Fox News were lying – again. Newsom gave them a formal opportunity to retract their lies and apologize, which they refused to do. So Newsom followed through with his promise to sue for defamation. And this week Fox News got some bad news about their efforts to have the lawsuit dismissed…

“Gov. Gavin Newsom scored a small legal victory in his defamation case against Fox News and host Jesse Watters, as a Delaware judge ruled that his &787 million lawsuit can move forward.

“‘Looking forward to discovery,’ the California governor responded Thursday in an X post.”

“Judge Sean P. Lugg found it ‘reasonably conceivable’ that Fox intentionally pushed false claims about Newsom when accusing him of lying about a phone call with Donald Trump during protests in Los Angeles.”

Newsom is right to be looking forward to the discovery process. That was how Dominion found a multitude of incriminating evidence against Fox News, including emails and other communications that revealed the dishonesty of Fox hosts Sean Hannity, Tucker Carlson, Laura Ingraham, and others, who were caught admitting to lying about Trump. It would be safe to bet that there is more such evidence that could be acquired in Newsom’s case.

Tucker Carlson was fired shortly after Fox settled with Dominion. Maybe Watters should be updating his resumé. And while Newsom may not take this case to trial (Fox will most likely settle), it could prove to be a bonanza for media analysts eager to learn more about the inner workings of the ultra-rightist, Trump-fluffing network.

Unfortunately, what develops from this case will most likely, once again, fail to reign in Fox’s lies and propaganda. That’s pretty much the whole business model of Fox News. Which is something that they have in common with Trump.
