Marjorie Taylor Greene Bashes Biden for Bringing Down Gas Prices, Ted Lieu Claps Back Brilliantly

The price of gas has long been a major factor in assessing the approval of the President and other government officials. Prior to last year’s midterm election Republicans attempted to use high gas prices to drag down President Biden and the electoral prospects of congressional Democrats. It didn’t work.

Now gas prices have fallen considerably. They now average about $3.44 per gallon nationwide, which is equal to where they were two years ago. That’s down from a high of $5.02 in June of 2022. And even though prices fell each month for the remainder of last year, the GOP furiously condemned Biden as being responsible for the high prices and criticized him for not bringing them down.

On Friday on the floor of the House of Representatives, Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-QAnon) sought to make gas prices an issue again. But this time she was appalled that Biden had taken measures to lower gas prices. How dare Biden make the cost of living more affordable for the American people? This debate was centered around her amendment (which later lost by a landslide 14 to 418 vote) to place restrictions on when and how a president can utilize the Strategic Petroleum Reserves. She fumed that…

“President Biden abused his power to sell our oil, reduce gas prices, so that the midterm elections would swing Democrats’ way. It’s a shame to trick the American people just to win an election. No president should be able to use their emergency powers for politics.”

It’s a welcome surprise to see Greene actually admit that Biden lowered gas prices, even though she somehow intended it to be a criticism. To be clear, Greene only wants to make sure that Biden is castigated for gas prices when they are high, and also when he successfully manages to lower them. It’s a lose-lose proposition. And she is defining anything that benefits the people as a “political” stunt and, therefore, must not be permitted. Which would explain why Republicans never do anything that benefits people, except that we already know they have no aversion to political stunts themselves.

What Greene is actually saying is that no Democratic president should be able to use their powers to benefit the American people. And her Olympic-grade hypocrisy was not lost on Democratic Rep. Ted Lieu who responded to Greene’s griping saying that…

“I can summarize this debate of the last two days into one sentence: Joe Biden lowered your gas prices and Republicans are upset about it. That’s what this is about. Joe Biden lowered your gas prices and that makes Republicans mad. And how do we know? They said it out loud. The gentlewoman from Georgia earlier this morning just said that Joe Biden lowered your gas prices for political reasons. You know, I don’t care why a president lowers your gas prices. If any president can lower your gas prices, we should support that president’s action.”

Rep. Lieu was just getting started. He continued saying that…

“There’s another reason this Republican bill is so stupid. Because not only did Joe Biden lower your gas prices, the United States of America made a profit on it. Buy low, sell high. It was brilliant what Joe Biden did. He released the Strategic Petroleum Reserves when gas prices were high, and that helped lower the gas prices. And then he refilled it at the lower amount. The U.S. made $4 billion dollars on Joe Biden’s actions. The Republicans always want to say ‘Let’s run government like a business.’ Joe Biden did exactly that when he lowered your gas prices, and then made a $4 billion dollar profit for the United States of America.”

So Biden eased a primary factor of the inflationary crush that Americans were enduring, and he made a few billion bucks on their behalf at the same time. No wonder MTG and the GOP are angry. The problem for them is that they are openly displaying that they couldn’t care less about helping the people of this country, especially if there’s a chance that Biden or the Democrats might get credit for it. And they remain pitifully out of touch with the issues that matter most to the nation.

Ted Lieu Offers to Read the Insurrection Clause During McCarthy’s Craven Constitution Stunt

The Trump Republican Party is giddy about the commencement of the next session of Congress. They managed to get the slimmest of a majority, which entitles them to elect the next House Speaker. Currently GOP minority leader, Kevin McCarthy, is presumed to be in line for that post. However, his ascension isn’t guaranteed because the Republican dumpster fire caucus is being smothered by their uber-rightist flank.

Consequently, McCarthy is taking extraordinary and desperate measures to secure his promotion. Among them is his humiliating condescension to extremists like Marjorie Taylor Greene, Jim Jordan, and Paul Gosar. He is promising an authoritarian style reign wherein he will try to unilaterally – and without cause – remove Democrats from their committee assignments. It’s a stance that only makes him look weaker and more incompetent than ever.

This week McCarthy floated another proposition that he believes will earn him the support of his party’s loonies. He announced what he plans to do on the first day of his tenure as Speaker, should he get there. And it has nothing to do with inflation, crime, immigration, abortion, or any of the other unpopular initiatives that Republicans campaigned on. But McCarthy’s proposal was met with immediate blowback by Democratic representative Ted Lieu of California. McCarthy stated his intention to stage a transparently exploitative piece of political theater…

McCarthy: On the very first day of the new Republican-led Congress, we will read every single word of the Constitution aloud from the floor of the House—something that hasn’t been done in years.
Lieu: Dear @GOPLeader: I volunteer to read the Insurrection Clause. Also, shouldn’t you and your party be working on passing bills to help the American people?

Rep. Lieu is now in contention for 2022’s award for “Best Trolling of a GOP Hack.” If McCarthy goes forward with his reading of the Constitution, he’s going to need to decide how to handle the parts that highlight the Republican’s lawlessness and racism. The Insurrection Clause that Lieu referenced seems to apply fittingly to Donald Trump, and many members to the GOP “Freedom” caucus. It says that…

“No person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice-President, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any State, who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States, or as a member of any State legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer of any State, to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection [emphasis added] or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof. But Congress may by a vote of two-thirds of each House, remove such disability.”

If history is any indication, McCarthy won’t be taking Lieu up on his his offer. The last time the Constitution was read from House floor was in 2011, by the newly elected Tea Party Republicans. They deliberately left out the Insurrection Clause. They all also left out the parts describing the “three-fifths compromise” that counted slaves as three-fifths of a person in the calculation of congressional representation. And they skipped over the language that mandated that “runaway” slaves be “delivered up” to their owners. If those are included this time, who will be the unlucky member who has to read them?

Democrats should not allow such revisionist history to be presented this time around. If McCarthy wants to pay tribute to the Founding Fathers and their work, then the entire record should be on display, warts and all. If Republicans don’t like the fact that the original documents oppressed slaves, women, and anyone that didn’t own property, they should be consoled by the amendments that followed, not by censorship.

What they shouldn’t be doing is editing out the parts of the Constitution that they don’t like because it reflects badly on them and what they are pursuing in the present day. But that’s what McCarthy and his confederates are aiming for. He should know that he’s on the wrong track when even his media mouthpieces on Fox News are criticizing his fecklessness and impotency as a leader.

Trump’s TRUTH Social Twitter Ripoff Follows in the Footsteps of His Prior Failures

If there is one thing that is consistent about Donald Trump, it’s his unchallenged status as America’s biggest loser. He has seemingly boundless ability to screw up everything he touches. The former reality TV game show host, who was evicted from the White House after a single disastrous term, also has a resume of humiliating failure that is unmatched. It includes his four bankrupt casinos, his fraudulent university, his steaks, his vodka, his airline, his D.C. hotel, his scam charitable foundation that was shut down because it was stealing funds, and so much more.

Trump also bears the dishonor of being the first president in history to be impeached twice. He is the first president in decades to leave office with fewer people employed than when he started. He exploded the national debt by cutting taxes for corporations and the wealthy. He incited deadly riots in Washington, D.C. by insurrectionist mobs. And he is directly responsible for the deaths of nearly a million Americans due to his incompetent mishandling of the COVID pandemic.

Now Trump has proudly launched what he delusionally believes will supplant Twitter in the social media space. But his ironically named “TRUTH” Social (named after Russia’s news outlet Pravda, which means truth?) got off to an ignominious beginning. As reported by the Daily Beast

“Would-be users of Trump’s new app merely struggled to create an account after Sunday night’s launch. Around 11 p.m. ET, select users who tried to create accounts were repeatedly met with a red error warning: ‘Something went wrong. Please try again.'” […]

“On Sunday, Devin Nunes, the former Republican congressman-turned-CEO of Trump Media & Technology Group, said that he hopes the new app will be fully operational by the end of March.”

This inauspicious introduction was met with appropriate mockery. Democratic Rep. Ted Lieu tweeted that “Many people say that if #TruthSocial can’t even handle opening new accounts, how will it keep your account from being hacked? Also, the problems won’t be fixed until late March. So is their staff like 2 people, the failed Devin Nunes and his cousin’s friend who is the coder?”

From the other side of the aisle Republican Rep. Adam Kinzinger also tweeted that “Social media sadly thrives on conflict. #truthsocial (which is ironically named) will be boring and fail, because it will be all Trump-fed drones. BUT, please don’t come back to real social media if you left for Trump and Nunes great idea. You get your one shot.”

These are all good points. What’s more, it bears noting that TRUTH Social’s user base has a ways to go before it can considered competitive with Twitter’s 200,000,000 users. At present there is a significant difference in the potential for interactions between the two platforms. For instance, Trump had more than 88,000,000 followers on Twitter. He has 175 followers on TRUTH Social. Country singer Travis Tritt has 286,000 followers on Twitter. He has 40 followers on TRUTH Social. GOP Rep. Madison Cawthorn has 364,000 followers on Twitter. He has 0 followers on TRUTH Social. With stats like that Trump’s cult disciples are surely going to rush to delete their Twitter accounts and live exclusively on TRUTH Social. Right?

It’s easy to see why Trump is so anxious to make this move. He has been banned on Twitter. And he has lost about 98% of his likes and retweets that are now posted by his Twitter ban defying spokes-shill, Liz Harrington. But he is unlikely to restore his former online glory. For one thing, his Twitter clone (built on open source software for which he is violating the license of the original developers) will be competing with other conservative social media sites (Gab, Parlar, Gettr, and the MyPillow guy’s FRANKSpeech) that beat him to the market (and are failing anyway).

It is also notable that Trump is hailing his venture as a haven for free speech. Which is hysterical given that the terms of service explicitly prohibit any criticism of the site or its operators. Which means that there can be no criticism of its Chairman, Donald Trump.

However, Trump has a business plan that he’s convinced will rocket him to the top of the conservative garbage heap. He’ll just sue his competition, or try to outlaw them, and if that doesn’t work just ask everybody to ditch them:

“Twitter is a disgrace to democracy. They shouldn’t be allowed to do business in this Country. […] Everybody should drop off of Twitter and Facebook.”

That should do it. Now there will probably be hordes of Trump Deplorables signing up for TRUTH Social any minute now, just waiting to interact with people who think exactly like they do in a community that is a tiny fraction of what Twitter has. What could be more fun? Let’s hope that they find happiness there and, as Rep. Kinzinger said, “Please, don’t come back.”
