Jen Psaki Schools Evangelical Reporter on the Complexities of Pregnancy and Abortion

Late Wednesday night the Supreme Court handed down an unsigned opinion that allowed Texas to implement the most extreme abortion law in the United States. It prohibits abortion after only six weeks, by which time most women don’t even know they are pregnant, allows total strangers to bring legal action, and has no exceptions for incest or rape.

Psaki Lightening

President Biden quickly announced a “whole-of-government” response to “to ensure that women in Texas have access to safe and legal abortions.” But in the meantime there will be severe consequences and irreparable harm for the women and their families who the radically right-wing members of the Court so callously disregarded.

Not surprisingly, the subject came up at Thursday’s White House press briefing. Owen Jensen of the Eternal Word Television Network asked a question that was focused more on the politics than the legalities. He entered into this exchange with Press Secretary Jen Psaki:

Jensen: Why does the President support abortion when his own Catholic faith teaches abortion is morally wrong?
Psaki: He believes that it’s a woman’s right. It’s a woman’s body and it’s her choice, He believes that it’s up to a woman to make those decisions with her doctor. I know you’ve never faced those choices. Nor have you ever been pregnant. But for women out there who have faced those choices, this is an incredibly difficult thing. The President believes that right should be respected.

Anyone who has covered Biden, or any other pro-choice Democrat, for the past fifty years already knew the answer to Jensen’s question. It was a deliberate attempt to demean the President and to draw Psaki into a pointless debate. Of course, Psaki doesn’t suffer fools gladly. Just ask Peter Doocy of Fox News. So she schooled him on why American women will be more disturbed by this decision than partisan men from evangelical “news” outlets.

The question about pro-choice Catholics in politics is one that keeps getting asked no matter how many times it is answered. But for some reason no one ever asks anti-choice Republicans a similar question. For instance, Donald Trump suddenly became rabidly anti-choice when he ran for the GOP nomination for president. However, he grew up in the Presbyterian church that has a pretty liberal view of abortion. According to their website

“[T]he artificial or induced termination of a pregnancy is a matter of careful ethical decision of the patient . . . and therefore should not be restricted by law.” […]

“When an individual woman faces the decision whether to terminate a pregnancy, the issue is intensely personal, and may manifest itself in ways that do not reflect public rhetoric, or do not fit neatly into medical, legal or policy guidelines.”

Many other denominations have a similar position, including Episcopalians and Methodists. So why don’t we ever hear a reporter ask “Why doesn’t Trump support abortion when his own Presbyterian faith teaches that abortion is a decision of personal morality?”

This is just another reason why the separation of church and state needs to be fiercely defended. Hypocrites masquerading as believers will always try to force their beliefs onto others. These are the same people who decry Big Government. They are the people who are opposing mask and vaccine mandates that actually do save the lives of actual people. But mandating women to carry fetuses to term against their will is just fine with them. Because that’s how religious fanatics roll.

  1. Ok. I have kept my mouth shut for many years, while anti-choice bunch have tried to shove their personal opinions down everyone’s throat & make it “the law of the land”once again. But dammit, enuff already! We now have a SCOTUS that cannot be trusted to do their job & instead, prefer unsigned opinions w/o even hearing the cases. It is politics, where politics DO NOT belong! Nothing “Supreme” about this court. I guess our democracy, that so many of us take for granted will always be here, really is at the end of its existence. It is coming to the end when, in a country that’s all about having the personal freedom to choose how you’ll live your own life, the gov’t (minority opinion) plans to decide for us the MOST personal of private, life-altering decisions! They will decide. Not you. Not you & your Dr. They will tell you what you must do & “be on their merry way”, with not even a 2nd thought about what they’ve done. (Self-righteous little f*cks!)
When your most personal & private choice is NOT yours to make, but you have to live with the life-long consequences & they do not…. I ask, where is your freedom? “What freedom?”, is what you should ask.
    Ask Texas.
Ask them why — when they can’t even handle their own power-grid — they should decide life & death issues for anyone! Why should they take away OUR freedom to choose anything, let alone this very personal decision about our own life?! F*ck Texas!
Then ask SCOTUS why they don’t care enuff to defend our rights?!
Ask Congress how the hell they can let this happen?!
Ask yourself, what personal freedom will they take away from us next?!!
Have we become so apathetic, or so politically polarized, that we will allow strangers to make our most personal choices for us?
I say “us”, but the wealthy have always been able to get abortions, no matter what the law says ~ they just fly off to get it done in Europe. Like everything, this law is just for ‘the rest of us’ & won’t affect the rich & powerful. If we allow this, there is no freedom they can’t take away from us.
It isn’t about “pro-life” ~ who’s “anti-life”?? It is about “pro-choice”, or NO choice! It’s all about the right to choose for oneself a huge choice in your life. A choice that will affect not just your life, but all those around you & most of all, the life of that child! No one else should force their choice on everyone else & on unwanted children forced to be born into this world! That is not doing them any favor. You don’t have that right. You don’t live with the results. The lives you destroy are not yours & you walk away thinking you did “the right thing”. Really? For whom? You have no friggin’ idea & will never know, what you’ve done; the suffering you’ve caused. You won’t deal with the consequences, will you? No. You will not. In fact, you will never have to think of those lives again, the ones you think you “saved”. Think they’d thank you if they knew what you did for them?

I am one of those lives. And I will never, ever thank you!! Never! Nor would my mother, my father, his parents, or any of the other entwined lives you had no right to screw-up & then just walk away.
In 1959 abortion was illegal. We cannot let it go back to those days. Leave Roe v. Wade alone & go run your own life, not anyone else’s! You have no clue what it is that you do. You should be forced to live with the consequences of your actions. Now, as then, it isn’t anyone’s right to make such a life-altering choice for the rest of us & it sure as hell shouldn’t be “the law”!
If you want to end abortions, PROMOTE PREVENTION of pregnancy. Make it free & accessible. No one WANTS to get an abortion; it’s no one’s 1st choice.
