Liz Cheney Rips Trump and his GOP Cult as ‘Willing Hostages to this Dangerous and Irrational Man’

There is, perhaps, no better representative of rock-ribbed conservatism in the United States Congress than Liz Cheney. She is a staunch advocate for the farthest right wing of the Republican Party, and just within the past week she voted against the Biden infrastructure bill and the John Lewis Voting rights Act.

Donald Trump, Fox News, QAnon

However, to her credit, she has resisted the lure of the cult of Donald Trump and his anti-American, authoritarian aspirations. Cheney had the courage to appear on Fox News and denounce Tucker Carlson as a purveyor of lies. and yesterday she gave a speech at a GOP fundraiser that was as good, or better, than any trouncing of Trump by the most fervent Democrat (although Adam Schiff sure scores points here). It was so good that it hardly needs any commentary. So enjoy (video below)

“At this moment, when it matters most, we are confronting a domestic threat that we have never faced before. A former president who’s attempting to unravel the foundations of our Constitutional Republic, aided by political leaders who have made themselves willing hostages to this dangerous and irrational man.

“Just last night, former president Trump was invited by House Republican leaders to be the keynote speaker at our annual large fundraising dinner. At the dinner, he reportedly said once again that the insurrection was on November 3rd, and that the events on January 6th – when a violent mob invaded the Capitol in an effort to overturn the will of the American people and stop the constitutional process of the counting of electoral votes – that those events were a protest. That they were justified.

“Political leaders who sit silent in the face of these false and dangerous claims are aiding the former president who is at war with the rule of law and the Constitution. When our constitutional order is threatened, as it is now, rising above partisanship is not simply an aspiration. It is an obligation. An obligation of every one of us.

“I love my party. I love its history. I love its principles. But I love my country more. I know this nation needs a Republican Party that is based on truth. One that puts forward our ideals and our policies based on substance. One that is willing to reject the former president’s lies. One that is willing to tell the truth. But millions of Americans have been tragically misled by former president Trump, who continues, to this day, to use language that he knows provoked violence on January 6th.”

What she said. Cheney’s righteous condemnation of Trump and her Republican colleagues is both laudable and troubling. It’s laudable for its honesty and clear sightedness about Trump and the threat that he posed and continues to pose. It’s troubling because it exposes the depths to which the Republican Party has fallen.

The Republican Party is morally bankrupt and irredeemably corrupt. They are worse than “willing hostages.” While they may feel pressure to succumb to Trumpism, they are actually active accomplices.

Cheney acknowledges that when she says that they are “aiding the former president who is at war with the rule of law and the Constitution.” And she is spot on when she observes that he continues to “use language that he knows provoked violence.” And if he isn’t brought to justice he will get his demented wish for even more violence, and worse, an end to the American experiment in democracy.

  1. “The Republican Party is morally bankrupt and irredeemably corrupt.”
~•~ Absolutely! Every word & act by the Rethugs confirms it! “Irredeemably” — as in, not able to be redeemed. This GOP cannot continue to be a valid part of U.S. gov’t ~ can’t be trusted ever again & all but a few in Congress violated their Oath of Office! Any conservatives who are NOT part of the “Big Lie”, voter supression, & did not betray the USA, will need to start a NEW conservative Party w/o the greedy, thieving liars who were loyal to Trump, more than USA! Or, they could switch to Ind. Party. The old (R) Party is no more anyway & “ReTrumplicans” should be banned from holding any office again! (There’s a reason why those who attempt a coup in other countries are killed, or locked away for life!)

Need to “clean house” with Dems too, for different reasons.
Since there are 2 distinctly different factions in Dem Party & their voters, it’d be good time for progressives in Congress to branch off, be their own Party. They could/would still vote with each other & support things they agree on, while allows each to go (grow) their own way. The yes/no, up/down, party line votes, paralyzed Congress ~ 3+ Parties would break that up & maybe get things moving!?

Trump’s the SOB leading the downward spiral to hell, but he sure didn’t do it alone ~ had/has plenty of help from Rethug Party members willing to sell-out our Country & their souls! They have no shame, so we need to shame them. Their poor choices have to have consequences ~ so far they have not.
It’s time to right the wrongs & quit letting 1 Party with Authoritarian aspirations & unquenchable thirst for power, destroy American democracy & take away our Right to Vote!
We have NO time left to fiddle-fart around! Dem leaders better get tough, be brave, or get the hell out of the way! Our democracy is at great risk here ~ the time to lead is NOW, or kiss it goodbye!
“Big/ dark money” has corrupted BOTH Parties & made campaigns obscenely expensive in the process. That must end for any democracy to remain. The greedy, corrupted politicians won’t fix it. So may have to “clean house” with some Dems next, if can’t/won’t do their job.
Either that, or we accept a dictatorship & the loss of our freedom at the hands of tyrants. EZ choice? Maybe.

    • Your article is very exciting and so true, it gets to my my very heart. I don’t know where to put this information. Maybe someone may read my comment to you. You see, I was barred from using some of your written terminology from using Twitter. The culprit was Ted Cruz. I should have stayed with commenting to the master cult leader, Trump only. All he can do is sue, and sue repeatedly. AMONG OTHER THINGS.Judyshrestha

  2. There are so many different personal agendas molding congress’s lack of progress. . Manchin is slowly revealing himself to be running his own parade, pushing the agenda of his donors the coal companies who pull his strings. He votes their agenda in the face of 70% of the people of West Virginia liking Biden’s plan. He seems capable of sinking his party’s election chances, and any chance Biden can succeed. McConnell is playing a game of power with no coherent plan of legislative action. The right is unfortunately genuflecting to the lying crybaby who is still whining about the November election results. I am somehow on his email list. The idiocy spewed from the purveyors is reminiscent of kids old radio shows. contribute x dollars to join Trump’s inner club. Contribute to get this exclusive t shirt! Let Trump know you’re gullible enough to believe he won reelection. belong to Trump’s exclusive club! Everything but a decoder ring!

We keep hearing of the demise of the Republican party, but the furthest right of the right wing seems to be thriving, due to a healthy dose of invective and lies. The terrible violence of the right, threatening and harassing election workers, invading and desecrating the US capitol, threatening violence and mayhem toward anyone daring to oppose them, purging anyone in their ranks with differing views, turning opposing parties from opponents to enemies, and generally heating the political environment to foment physical violence. People are willing to believe all kinds of nonsense, as in the current craze over Qanon. Someone is having a lot of fun pushing crazier and crazier ideas and wondering when followers begin to realize they have been had. So far, the gullible have not caught on.

    • The saddest and most dangerous part of the support that Trump gets is that his supporters are neither rational nor redeemable. It’s a cult. They believe only him, even when it’s obvious that he’s lying.

  3. Holding out for decoder ring. (Kidding, of course)

  4. Yes, and I don’t care what her politics are, she’s doing an excellent job exposing those who were responsible for the January 6 riot (coup) at the Capitol, against our democracy.
