Fox News Online Quashes Coverage of Newsom’s Landslide Victory Over Recall and Trump-ism

The election to recall the governor of California went down in flames on Tuesday. Gavin Newsom defeated the blatantly partisan Republican sham with a whopping 28 point margin of victory. The results exceeded the predictions of recent polls and the race was called within an hour of the closing of the polls.

Fox News, Censorship

The outcome was a crushing blow to the GOP’s already Lilliputian stature in the Golden State. But it was also a striking repudiation of Donald Trump and his surly surrogate, Larry Elder. The parallels between Trump and Elder should have been a signal to California’s Republicans that Elder could not prevail. He even parroted Trump’s knee-jerk reaction to electoral drubbings by baselessly charging that the the election was rigged before any of the results were even tabulated.

Elder may have been fooled by the adoring coverage he got from Fox News He appeared on the network dozens of times prior to the election for interviews that were little more than campaign ads. So it shouldn’t surprise anyone to learn that after the election Fox News has imposed “radio silence” with regard to reporting Newsom’s triumph.

More than twelve hours after the race was called for Newsom, Fox News has not posted a single tweet announcing that Newsom had won. Although they did find time to tweet about the “volatile” Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne relationship, Nicki Minaj’s views on vaccines, and Rand Paul calling for another Biden staffer to be removed.

What’s more, Fox’s website also suppressed information about the recall results. There were no stories near the top of the page, but if you scrolled far enough down you would only find tangential and negatively framed articles such as…

  • Celebrities react to Gov. Gavin Newsom’s victory in his recall election
Because that’s the most important post-election analysis Fox News could muster.
  • Newest CNN hire faces backlash after comments on Newsom recall
Because reporting on other reporters takes priority over reporting actual news.
  • LA Times celebrates Gavin Newsom’s recall win over ‘extremist, intolerant’ Larry Elder: ‘A sigh of relief’
Because Fox News can’t resist accusing other media of political bias.
  • Joe Concha: Newsom victory won’t erase California’s homelessness, crime, high taxes
Because Fox apparently thinks that all political problems should be resolved a few hours after an election

Fox News spent many hours in the months before the recall election interviewing Elder and other Republican politicians and pundits. The election was cast a watershed event that would reveal the future course of California and the nation. But that was when Fox thought there was a chance that Newsom would lose. Now that he has achieved a resounding victory, Fox News is trying to pretend that the election never happened.

Don’t be surprised if Fox News never mentions the recall again. In fact, look for them to return to lying about Afghanistan, and defending the January 6th insurrectionists, and blaming low vaccination rates on Biden and Black Americans, and whatever other manufactured nonsense they’re cooking up. It’s what they do. And they won’t tolerate any real news getting in their way.

Pelosi to Gen Milley: Trump is ‘Crazy. You Know He’s Crazy. He’s Been Crazy for a Long Time’

In the fantastical final days of Donald Trump’s occupation of the White House, whatever measure of madness you might have imagined was actually much worse. Having lost so decisively to Joe Biden, a man Trump tried frame as a senile communist, threw Trump into a psychotic tailspin that was observable by all to whom he came in contact.

Donald Trump, Insane, Straight Jacket

The book new book, Peril, by Bob Woodward and Robert Costa, is described by the publisher with this alarming blurb: “The transition from President Donald J. Trump to President Joseph R. Biden Jr. stands as one of the most dangerous periods in American history.” And even that is an understatement.

RELATED: PROJECTION: Trump and Fox News Attack Nancy Pelosi’s Mental Fitness

Excerpts from the book are beginning to emerge that chronicle the days following the January 6th insurrection in Washington, D.C. Among the most harrowing accounts of Trump’s descent into madness are the conversations House Speaker Nancy Pelosi had with the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Mark Milley. CNN’s Jaime Gangel brought some of the more disturbing comments to her Tuesday morning segment of Inside Politics. Gangel led off by quoting from the book that…

“General Mark Milley took top secret action to limit President Trump’s ability to make strike or to use nuclear weapons. […] Milley is deeply shaken from the assault on the Capitol on [January] 6th. He believes Trump is unstable, unpredictable, and Milley believes that Trump is in serious mental decline.”

Then Gangel recounts the contents of a startling and historic phone call between Milley and Pelosi for which Woodward and Costa had obtained an exclusive transcript. In the call Pelosi revealed that she had the same concerns as Milley:

Pelosi: Who knows what he might do? He’s crazy. You know he’s crazy. He’s been crazy for a long time. So don’t say you don’t know what his state of mind is. He’s crazy. And what he did yesterday is further evidence of his craziness.
Milley: Madame Speaker, I agree with you on everything.

Some partisan players might be inclined to dismiss the concerns of Speaker Pelosi, a longtime and loyal Democrat. But Gen. Milley is a career Army officer who was appointed to his post by Trump and confirmed by the Senate on a vote of 89 to 1 (Jeff Merkley, a Democrat, was the sole “no” vote). Milley was so afraid that Trump could “go rogue” that he took precautionary measures to intercept any orders to use nuclear weapons.

As if that weren’t bad enough, CNN also reported another conversation documented in the book. Trump’s efforts to bully Vice-President Mike Pence reveal a desperate, delusional, and dangerous soon-to-be former president:

Trump: If these people say you had the power, wouldn’t you want to?
Pence: I wouldn’t want any one person to have that authority.
Trump: But wouldn’t it be almost cool to have that power?
Pence: No. I’ve done everything I could and then some to find a way around this. It’s simply not possible.
Trump: No, no, no! You don’t understand, Mike. You can do this. I don’t want to be your friend anymore if you don’t do this.

And there we can see Trump’s emotional maturity reverting to elementary school level. Which is a key symptom of senility. The stubbornness, the anger, the vindictiveness, and the tantrum throwing when he doesn’t get his way, are all characteristics of a petulant child. No wonder the people on the inside were scared.

Unfortunately, not enough of them were scared enough to remove the twice-impeached Trump from office when they had the chance – twice. And lily-livered sycophants like GOP leaders Mitch McConnell and Kevin McCarthy only made things worse. Their docile servility to the cult of Trump has left the nation in the precarious position it is in today.

With Trump continuing to propagate the “Big Lie” about election fraud, and incite further violence and domestic terrorism (aided and abetted by Fox News), it is at least somewhat comforting that there are failsafe features in our government that can prevent lunatics like Trump, and others like him, from executing their maniacal plots. The question is, how long will that hold up if the perpetrators aren’t held accountable under the law?

UPDATE: Trump appeared on the Newsmax program hosted by his former press secretary, Sean Spicer, to respond to the excerpts from Woodward’s book. He began by accusing Milley of treason, but by the end of his rant he was attacking Woodward’s veracity. So which is it Donnie? Is it fake news or treason? Or are you just babbling again, as usual?

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Attends the Met Gala in a Dress that Really Makes a Statement

It’s that time of year again. It’s time for the “Met Gala,” an annual charity event held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The event is known for inspiring attendees to adorn themselves in unique, and often bizarre, costumes that frequently create a stir on the red carpet.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Tax the Rich

According to Wikipedia

“The Met Gala, formally called the Costume Institute Gala or the Costume Institute Benefit and also known as the Met Ball, is an annual fundraising gala for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City. It marks the opening of the Costume Institute’s annual fashion exhibit.”

RELATED: AOC and Democrats Rush Aid to Texas, Fox News Calls it ‘Capitalizing Off Storm Devastation’

This year the gala was graced with the presence of the representative for New York’s 14th congressional district, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. And she arrived in an outfit that is as much a political statement as it is a fashion statement: Tax the Rich!

This should give Fox News something to talk about for the rest of the month, at least.

Fox News Openly Defends the White Supremacy and Treason of Domestic Terrorists

On the solemn anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, four presidents (Clinton, Bush, Obama, and Biden) made dignified and respectful appearances to honor the victims, heroes, and families whose lives were changed forever. These statesmen demonstrated the compassion and decency to set aside their personal interests in order to remind the nation what it means to be the “United” States of America.

Fox News, KKK

The only holdout was, of course, Donald Trump, who had a more pressing engagement to enrich himself as a commentator at an exhibition fight in Hollywood, Florida. He did put out a video that was typically dominated by tributes to himself and bitter assaults on his political foes.

On Monday morning Fox News covered some of the weekend events from a thoroughly bizarre and repugnant perspective. The segment somehow veered off into territory that had nothing to do with 9/11 (video below). At one point, co-host Rachel Campos-Duffy felt compelled to say that…

“We had a stand down on white supremacy in the military, and I guess that I’m just not seeing that that’s worthy of a stand down.”

Really? So Campos-Duffy is in favor of the military permitting white supremacy in the ranks? While it isn’t particularly noteworthy that she and others on Fox News would hold that opinion (her co-host Brian Kilmeade agreed saying that “I share your frustration”), it isn’t often that they state it so explicitly on the air.

What triggered this outburst was a discussion about remarks by George W. Bush on Saturday. In a surprisingly thoughtful address, Bush drew parallels between foreign terrorists and the homegrown variety that have been inspired by Trump and Fox News. Bush said that…

“We have seen growing evidence that the dangers to our country can come not only across borders, but from violence that gathers within. There is little cultural overlap between violent extremists abroad and violent extremists at home. But in their disdain for pluralism, in their disregard for human life, in their determination to defile national symbols, they are children of the same foul spirit.”

Campos-Duffy complained that Bush’s comments took “the focus off of who we need to be focused on.” She elaborated saying that…

“I think that motivations matter. The Islamic terrorists want to kill Americans. They hate Western civilization. They hate America. They have lots of reason for that. Regardless of what you think about what happened on Jan. 6, the people there went in with the flags. They were not America haters.”

What distinction is she making here? The motives of the Trump insurrectionists were also that they wanted to kill Americans, including Mike Pence, Nancy Pelosi, and other members of Congress. They hate Western civilization and America, as evident in their efforts to discard the Constitution and impose their own totalitarian dictatorship. Yes, they went there with flags, which they used as weapons against the police officers who were protecting the seat of American democracy. How were they not “America haters”? And Trump himself weighed in on Bush’s speech saying that…

“…he lectures us that terrorists on the ‘right’ are a bigger problem than those from foreign countries that hate America and that are pouring into our Country right now.”

Notice that Bush said nothing about the “right” or any other political ideology, but Trump recognized his own faction when he heard it described. And his assertion that foreign terrorists are “pouring into our Country right now” is just more of his delusional hyperbole. Just like his “Big Lie” about election fraud, there is no factual basis for his charges. Trump just wants to drench his cult followers in irrational fears.

Furthermore, Trump is whining (as usual) that Bush has no right to “lecture” anyone because he is responsible for thousands of deaths from the Afghanistan and Iraq wars. That may be true. But there is a nauseating sort of irony in Trump saying it considering that he is responsible for hundreds of thousands of American deaths from his negligent and incompetent mismanagement of the COVID pandemic.

In the attempt by Fox News to distinguish the crimes of the January 6th insurrectionists, and other domestic terrorists, from foreign terrorists, they actually highlighted their similarities and common purpose. And even worse, they overtly expressed their not-so-veiled racism. This isn’t new for Fox, but it nevertheless needs to be exposed and disseminated widely to remind everyone what sort of vile propaganda network the Murdochs are operating.

WHUT? Fox News Fact Checks Trump’s ‘Big Lie’ Live During His 9/11 Photo-Op

On the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, Donald Trump “honored” the occasion by appearing as the featured commentator for an exhibition fight between a couple of geezers at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida. He also released a video that barely mentioned 9/11, but instead insulted both America and President Biden as foolish and inept.

Donald Trump, Fox News, White House

However, that didn’t satisfy Trump’s obsession with attacking Biden and glorifying himself. He spent a few minutes at a New York police station with a carefully selected group of bootlickers. While there, Trump complained that Biden had visited the three sites where planes crashed on 9/11 but didn’t speak. Perhaps because Biden preferred to make the day about paying tribute to the victims and the heroes, rather than deflecting attention to himself.

Trump, on the other hand, visited none of those sites. And when he spoke it had little to do with 9/11. He spent most of his chat with the NYPD exalting himself and maligning Biden. At the end he slipped in a “thank you” for their efforts on 9/11. But he spent far more time criticizing Biden on the exit from Afghanistan, which Trump failed to accomplish in four years, and the “rigged” election that he is still – nine months later – lying about it to anyone who will listen.

What made this episode of Trump’s whining notable, was that coverage of his remarks on Fox News were abruptly cut off by anchor Arthel Neville. As Trump launched into his “Big Lie” rant he was fact checked live. Neville broke in to say that…

“[Trump] did not miss any opportunities to air grievances including claiming that the election was rigged, which it was not. It has been proven in court multiple times.”

That’s a measure of honesty that is rarely seen on Fox News. And certainly not by any of their primetime Trump-fluffers who continue to worshipfully patronize his delusions. And Neville was not alone this week. On Thursday’s edition of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Fox’s Chris Wallace was asked about interviewing Republicans who still refuse to accept that Biden was elected fair and square. Wallace said that…

“There are plenty of people who were the leaders in Congress of challenging [the election] that I just have not had on the show ever since then. And I have purposefully not had them on, frankly, because I don’t want to hear their crap.”

These moments of rational reporting on Fox News are welcome, but they should not be regarded as any indication of a change in their core mission to slander Democrats and spread right-wing propaganda. Those are still the foundations of Fox’s editorial objectives. Sean Hannity will still kiss Trump’s – let’s say ring. Tucker Carlson will still advance the agenda of America’s racist White Nationalists. And notwithstanding these brief blips of sanity, Fox News will still work tirelessly to disinform the American people, just as it has for twenty-five years.

Trump’s 9/11 Statement is a Disgusting Display of Narcissism and an Insult to America

It’s been twenty years since the United States was struck in a tragic act of terrorism. On September 11, 2001, the nation was changed in ways it could not have previously imagined. It was a day of unthinkable loss. But it was also a day that was followed by weeks and months and years of inspiring expressions of heroism, hope, and unity.

9/11

On this day of remembrance, four American presidents of both political parties – Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Joe Biden – came together to pay tribute to those who were lost and those who worked tirelessly and selflessly to save lives and rebuild.

Unfortunately, there is another former president who simply doesn’t have the compassion to participate in such displays of empathy and patriotism. On this day Donald Trump released a statement that affirmed his utter absence of the basic human decency that defines America in times of hardship.

Trump’s offensive “tribute” to the victims and heroes of 9/11 lasted for about 24 seconds of the video that ran 1:44. He then spent the remainder of his remarks attacking President Biden. He began by blaming Biden for how the war in Afghanistan ended, despite the fact that it was Trump’s plan that led to the Taliban’s victory. He released 5,000 of their fighters and lifted all of the financial sanctions in what his own National Security Advisor lambasted as a surrender agreement.

Here’s a taste of Trump’s self-serving and anti-American ranting on a day that should be a solemn occasion (posted here by his spokes-shill, if you have the stomach for it):

“The leader of our country was made to look like a fool, and that can never be allowed to happen. It was caused by bad planning, incredible weakness, and leaders who truly didn’t understand what was happening. This is the 20th year of this war and should have been a year of victory, honor and strength. Instead Joe Biden and his inept administration surrendered in defeat. We will live on, but sadly our country will be wounded for a long period of time. We will struggle to recover from the embarrassment this incompetence has caused. Do not fear however. America will be made great again.”

So Trump thought it would be appropriate on this somber occasion to call our President a fool. He soiled the seriousness of the day with his jealousy and bitterness because Biden was able to accomplish goals that he could only whine about. And he abandon any effort to uplift the nation, instead fixating on the “embarrassment” and “incompetence” that he caused, but which he is impotently projecting onto Biden.

Also on this day, Trump thought it would be appropriate to “honor” its memory by partying with his boxing pals as he serves as the featured commentator for an exhibition match at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida. For fifty bucks a pop Trump is turning this anniversary into another opportunity to fleece his cult disciples.

By contrast, President Biden is visiting all three sites that were struck on 9/11. He is paying his respects to the fallen, their families, and those who sacrificed in rescue, recovery and rebuilding efforts. Biden also released a statement that should put Trump to shame (if he were capable of it). Biden said in part that…

“Unity is what makes us who we are, America at its best. To me, that is the central lesson of September 11. It’s that at our most vulnerable, in the push and pull of all that makes us human, in the battle for the soul of America, unity is our greatest strength. Unity doesn’t mean we have to believe the same thing. But we must have a fundamental faith in each other and this nation.”

The differences between Biden’s respectful and hopeful message, and Trump’s selfish, envious, and hate-filled harangue, could not be more distinct. But it is also no more than we expect from a lying, unpatriotic, greedy, sociopathic, narcissist, who couldn’t care less about this country or its people.

Has Jen Psaki Finally Had Enough of Fox News Hack Peter Doocy’s Gotcha Questions?

President Biden’s initiative to increase the rate of vaccinations in America is being received by the majority of people in the country with significant support and optimism. A recent poll asking whether voters in five swing states would favor corporations requiring employees to get vaccinated or get tested weekly found that upwards of 60% were in favor of it.

Jen Psaki, Fox News, Peter Doocy

That broad-based support, however, has not deterred Fox News and Republican partisans from launching exceedingly hostile attacks on both Biden and his plan. Here’s a taste of the rancid rhetoric that Fox is regurgitating:

That last friendly fellow who was insinuating that government employees be murdered was Josh Mandel, the current Republican candidate for Senate in Ohio.

Meanwhile, at Friday’s White House press briefing, Fox News correspondent Peter Doocy assumed his role as Chief of Inane Inquisitions. Seeking to trip up Press Secretary Jen Psaki (for which he has a perfect record of failure), Doocy entered into the following exchange:

Doocy: Why is it that you’re trying to require anybody with a job or anybody who goes to school to get the COVID-19 vaccine, but you are not requiring that of migrants that continue walking across southern border into the country?
Psaki: Look, our objective is to get as many people vaccinated across the country as humanly possible. And so the President’s announcement yesterday was an effort to empower businesses, to give businesses the tolls to protect their workforces. That’s exactly what we did. But certainly we want everybody to get vaccinated, and the more people to get vaccinated, whether they are migrants or whether they are workers, protects more people in the United States.
Doocy: But it’s a requirement for people at a business with more than a hundred people, but it’s not a requirement for migrants at the Southern border. Why?
Psaki: That’s correct.

Psaki’s final response was less a reply to Doocy’s question than it was a dismissal of his foolishness as a waste of time. There are stark and obvious differences between the government’s role in making the workplaces of 100 million people safer, and the role of immigration agencies managing a few thousand temporary detainees. Biden’s focus on the former is clearly a higher priority.

That said, the welfare of the detainees has not been disregarded. All of the immigrants coming across the Southern border are tested for the coronavirus and offered a vaccination. And just like American workers, they are not forced to take it. Even so, 70% of the immigrants agree to be vaccinated. That’s a significantly higher percentage of vaccine acceptance than for Fox News viewers, which is only about 62%. That compares to 83% for viewers of CNN or MSNBC. The numbers are even worse for Trump voters (50%) versus Biden voters (91%).

Doocy’s question harbors a couple of typical Fox News hypocrisies. First of all, it’s premise is that it’s wrong to mandate vaccines. But it then it suggests that, despite being wrong, such mandates should be applied to even more people, in this case immigrants. Secondly, if Fox News were aware that vaccines actually are being offered to immigrants, the network’s xenophobes would be outraged that those resources were going to foreigners rather than American citizens. America First, and all that.

So once again Doocy has demonstrated his ignorance of the issues he raises. Either that or he is so determined to manufacture controversy that he doesn’t care how ignorant he appears. And once again Psaki has spanked him for his pathetic insolence. You would think he would get tired of this after so long. Apparently Psaki is.

CNN’s Jake Tapper Goes Off on Biden for ‘Scolding’ Willfully Deceived Vaccine Refusers

For the majority of Americans who have done the sensible and responsible thing by getting vaccinated against the coronavirus, their obstinate counterparts who reject the vaccine (and science) are a mortal threat. They are putting both the health of people and the nation’s economic health at risk. And the President, as well as the American people, aren’t having it.

Joe Biden, Tweet

On Thursday President Biden addressed this threat with both blunt language and substantive policy. His plan to increase the rate of vaccinations by, among other things, directing large companies to require that their employees either get vaccinated or have weekly tests would provide greater protection for the population at large. Predictably, this was met with scorn by right-wing politicians and pundits. Especially Fox News (who Biden called out in his speech) where they maligned Biden as a “tyrant” who “declared war on millions of Americans.”

Unfortunately, over at CNN there was additional criticism of the President from a rather bizarre angle. Jake Tapper hosted a segment (video below) wherein he complained that Biden was taking the wrong approach by “scolding” the unvaccinated. He characterized them as victims of the liars in government and the press. While it is true that Republicans, Fox News, and their confederates have been flagrantly lying to the American people, it is naïve to portray them as victims. They have the same access to the truth about the COVID pandemic as everyone else. They just willfully choose to believe what are easily provable lies. Nevertheless, Tapper had this to say about it:

“I don’t think scolding is the approach. There are these purveyors of misinformation out there, and they’re not just on the right. Robert Kennedy Jr. is one of the most notorious ones. And I haven’t seen the president or anyone say, look, people, like, he’s scolding the people that are being lied to as opposed to the liars.

“Instead of saying there are a bunch of people trying to get your money, trying to get you attention, trying to get your votes, trying to get your views and clicks, they are lying to you. Instead of shaming the liars and trying to educate the people being lied to, he’s scolding the people being lied to. And again, as with the election lie, you can get mad at the people who believe the lies, but the villains are the liars.”

Tapper is correct that there are “villains” who are lying to people and that they deserve to be castigated for their reckless and potentially deadly dishonesty. But that’s the only part he got right.

It was wrong to describe Biden’s tone as “scolding,” when it was, in fact, appropriately caring as he implored the resisters to do the right thing for themselves and everyone else. It was also wrong to pretend that there was some equivalence between the long-running, fringe, anti-vaccine campaign by RFK, Jr, and the establishment Republicans and conservative media who are exacerbating the problem.

Tapper also claims not to have seen anyone criticizing or “shaming the liars” who have misled the resisters. Really? There has been significant amounts of such criticism whenever someone at Fox News, or some self-serving Republican hack, has expressed their hostility to vaccines and the need to get more people to partake of them. Biden even addressed it in his speech on Thursday saying that, “to make matters worse, there are elected officials actively working to undermine the fight against COVID-19.”

However, as guilty as the vaccine disinformers are of putting the nation at risk, the people who choose to believe them are not mere victims. They purposefully ignore and/or rebuke the truth about vaccines. They are hardened in their opposition to the facts, instead preferring to believe Facebook quacks, Fox News hacks, and political whacks.

Credible doctors, politicians and pundits have been trying for months to get the resisters on board. They’ve tried every type of persuasion imaginable, including education, appeals to compassion, profiles of resisters who died, and even cash rewards. If they haven’t been convinced by now, exactly what does Tapper think will finally convince them? Furthermore, isn’t Tapper’s position condescending to the resisters, implying that they are too stupid figure out that they are being lied to? While that may be true, how will it help his argument to succeed?

So yes, Tapper is correct about the guilt of those disseminating lies. But he is too easy on those consuming them. There is nothing remotely credible about Tucker Carlson’s paranoid ranting that vaccines don’t work and “they” won’t tell you. Nor are Sean Hannity’s efforts to plant doubts about the vaccine rooted in facts. But it is consistent with the rest of the rightist media that deliberately steers people away from life-saving guidance by medical experts. And the unvaccinated are not being forced to believe it. They a choosing to do so, freely.

Tapper might want to listen to Biden’s speech again and pay close attention to his appeal. Particularly this part that displays his empathy for all of the people of the country, and his genuine desire for everyone to be safe from the ravages of the pandemic:

“My message to unvaccinated Americans is this: What more is there to wait for? What more do you need to see? We’ve made vaccinations free, safe, and convenient. The vaccine is FDA approved. Over 200 million Americans have gotten at least one shot. We’ve been patient but our patience is wearing thin and your refusal has cost all of us. So, please, do the right thing.”

President Biden Brings ‘Even Fox News’ Into His Appeal to Get More Americans Vaccinated

As the COVID pandemic continues to surge through the ranks of the nation’s unvaccinated, President Biden is taking more aggressive steps to quell the viral storm that has taken so many lives. Despite how easily the suffering and grief can be prevented, there are still far too many people being infected, hospitalized, and dying than need to be.

Fox News, Covid

Studies show that the majority of the unvaccinated are those attuned to the disinformation disseminated by Fox News and their anti-vax accomplices in the Republican Party. And the majority of those suffering the most severe consequences from exposure to COVID are the unvaccinated. Upwards of 90% of hospitalizations and fatalities are in that group.

Biden’s initiative seeks to halt the progress of the coronavirus and its evolving variants with a six step plan that he introduced in a speech to the nation on Thursday. As reported by CNN

“President Joe Biden on Thursday imposed stringent new vaccine rules on federal workers, large employers and health care staff in a sweeping attempt to contain the latest surge of Covid-19.

“The new requirements could apply to as many as 100 million Americans — close to two-thirds of the American workforce — and amount to Biden’s strongest push yet to require vaccines for much of the country.”

There was noticeable distress in Biden’s plea to the country (video below) due to the resistance in certain political circles. He expressed that in his speech saying that…

“‘We’ve been patient, but our patience is wearing thin, and your refusal has cost all of us,’ Biden said, his tone hardening toward Americans who still refuse to receive a vaccine despite ample evidence of their safety and full approval of one — the Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine — from the US Food and Drug Administration.

“He said vaccinated America was growing ‘frustrated’ with the 80 million people who have not received shots and are fueling the spread of the virus. And he acknowledged the new steps would not provide a quick fix.”

Key to Biden’s plan is a Labor Department directive aimed at increasing the share of vaccinated workers. It’s a solution that doesn’t mandate that anyone get vaccinated, so long as they get tested regularly. But expect the right-wingers in the GOP and on Fox News to complain that it’s a violation of their freedom anyway. And that may be why Biden explicitly called out Fox News during his speech when he spoke of the workplace features on his plan:

“Tonight I’m announcing that the Department of Labor is developing an emergency rule that will require all employers with 100 or more employees, that together employ over 80 million workers, to ensure their workforces are fully vaccinated, or show a negative test at least once a week.

“Some of the biggest companies are already requiring this. United Airlines, Disney, Tyson’s food, and even Fox News. The bottom line: We’re gonna protect vaccinated workers from unvaccinated coworkers. We’re gonna reduce the spread of COVID-19 by increasing the share of the workforce that is vaccinated in businesses all across America.”

The inclusion of Fox News in this address is Biden’s attempt to bring in a sector of the American people that ordinarily wouldn’t pay any attention to what he has to say. After all, Fox’s most watched programs have actively disparaged vaccines and other virus mitigation efforts. Tucker Carlson told his viewers that vaccines don’t work and “they” aren’t telling you. Sean Hannity has sowed vaccine doubts by pretending to support the science, even while insisting that no one should listen to him. Laura Ingraham mocked Biden for following CDC guidance.

What makes this especially difficult is that the Fox News disciples have been programmed to reject science. That may still be the case. But it was still necessary for Biden to give this a shot. Considering the fact that Fox News viewers are the biggest obstacle to a return to normalcy, they need to be reached in order for any plan to work.

Let’s hope that they can finally set aside their political prejudices and willful ignorance long enough to care about the lives of their families, friends, neighbors, coworkers, and country. It may be a long shot, but it’s one that must be taken.

The Civil War Was Rigged? Sore Loser Trump Aligns Himself with Robert E. Lee

Watching someone you care about devolve into ever deeper trenches of mental illness can be profoundly painful. So what is like when when watching it happen to Donald Trump, the most despised occupant of the White House in modern times?

Donald Trump, Fox News, QAnon

There is little doubt that Trump holds the undisputed title of America’s Biggest Loser. And after being decisively defeated by Joe Biden, Trump has continued to nurse the delusion that he “won by a landslide” because the election was “rigged.” Never mind that he’s had nine months to offer up evidence of that claim but he and all of his minions have utterly failed to do so.

Sore losers often find it comforting to commiserate with one another in an effort to ease the pain of having to acknowledge the glaring inadequacies that are obvious to everyone else who isn’t among the their glassy-eyed cult followers. And that’s what Trump is doing in a bizarre alt-tweet, posted by his spokes-shill, (whose proxy Trump tweeting is violating Twitter’s rules against circumventing a ban).

In this official statement by the Former Guy, takes a “bold” stand in favor of the Confederate traitors who fought to secede from the United States so that they could continue to own human beings as property. Trump was triggered by news of the removal of a statue commemorating one of his personal heroes, Confederate General Robert E. Lee.

For the record, such removals are not suppressing history, as the apologists for the Southern traitors often argue. The history remains in books, museums, TV and films, and many other appropriate warehouses of knowledge. Statues are not history lessons. They are tributes. That’s why we don’t have statues of Hitler in public squares to preserve him in historical terms.

Trump’s statement, however, was an unambiguous celebration of one of America’s most committed perpetrators of treason. Trump began by describing how he “watched as a massive crane took down the magnificent and very famous statue of ‘Robert E. Lee On His Horse'” Clearly upset by what he considered to be an offensive act, Trump went on to laud Lee, saying that…

“Robert E. Lee is considered by many generals to be the greatest strategist of them all. President Lincoln wanted him to command the North, in which case the war would have been over in one day. Robert E. Lee instead chose the other side because of his great love of Virginia, and except for Gettysburg, would have won the war. He should be remembered as perhaps the greatest unifying force after the was was over.”

WTF? First of all, Lee’s reputation was the result of decades of propaganda. He didn’t lead the revolt “because of his great love of Virginia.” He led it because he was a slave owner who believed that slavery was condoned, and even advocated, by his Christian faith. Lee told a reporter at the time that “based on wisdom and Christian principles, you do a gross wrong and injustice to the whole negro race in setting them free.”

What’s more, Lee was among eight West Point trained colonels from Virginia in the U.S. Army when the South sought to wage war against the United States. The other seven remained loyal to the Union, while Lee alone chose treason. It had nothing to do with loving Virginia, as Trump said. And Lee was never a “unifying force” after the war. He wanted only to unify the white Northerners and Southerners. He still believed that Blacks were inferior and lobbied to prohibit them from voting.

However, perhaps the most ludicrous claim Trump said in that statement was that “except for Gettysburg” Lee and the South would have won the war. Really? That’s like saying “except for Waterloo Napoleon would have won.” Or “except for 81 million Americans voting for Biden, Trump would have won.” In short, Trump is saying that except for losing he would have won. Duh!

The cult worship of Lee by Trump and his Southern Confederate brethren is entirely misplaced. Historians have debunked the undo acclaim he has been showered with. An essay published in the Washington Post in 2017 set the record straight. In it Lee is described as a “bumbling strategist and the central character in ‘the most successful propaganda campaign in American history.'” Continuing it noted that “Lee’s ineptitude was most damaging at Gettysburg.”

What makes this all more nauseating is that Trump is virtually pining for the Southern victory that he believes Lee earned. His statement went on to say that…

“Our culture is being destroyed and our history and heritage, both good and bad, are being extinguished by the Radical Left, and we can’t let that happen! […] What an embarrassment we are suffering because we don’t have the genius of a Robert E. Lee!”

For Trump – the infamously famous stable genius and bone spur sufferer – to opine on the competence of generals is a joke. He has distinguished himself as a military moron. The generals he appointed while president mostly look upon him with scorn and ridicule, calling him an “idiot” and worse.

Trump’s Defense Secretary, General Mattis, said he made “a mockery of our Constitution” His Chief of Staff, General Kelly, said that he has “poisoned Americans’ minds”. His National Security Advisor, General McMaster, said he was “aiding and abetting Putin.” The only general on Trump’s side, confessed felon Mike Flynn, confirms the Putin charge. But now Trump wants us to consider his assessment of quality military leadership? No sir!
