Fox News is On a Crusade Against the Women of MSNBC: Nicolle Wallace Edition

Fox News is apparently ending the year with a full court press against the women hosting programs on MSNBC. It wasn’t enough for them to have spent the year fluffing Donald Trump, by lying about the violent January 6th insurrection, and spreading deadly disinformation about the COVID pandemic.

Nicolle Wallace, MSNBC

On this last week of 2021 Fox News has already produced a hit piece on Joy Reid that was seething with hostility because she accurately reported that Fox is killing off their own audience. Then a few days later Fox posted a story attacking Rachel Maddow for being right about COVID vaccines. Both of these stories were glaringly biased and packed with ultra-conservative perspectives and flagrant lies.

At first glance it didn’t appear to be anything out of the ordinary for Fox News. Their bitter animosity toward Democratic principles and progressive politics isn’t exactly breaking news. And Fox often takes petty swipes at their cable news competitors. But it is now apparent that there has been some openly misogynistic coordination to these stories. Fox just added MSNBC’s popular daytime host, Nicolle Wallace, to their enemies list.

A new article published on the Fox News website blasted a headline that proclaimed that an MSNBC anchor was mocked as “shamelessly neurotic” and “embarrassing.” The article began saying that…

“MSNBC’s Nicolle Wallace was roasted this week after referring to herself as a ‘Fauci groupie,’ in reference to her adoration of White House Chief Medical Adviser Dr. Anthony Fauci.”

Oh my heavens! Wallace had the audacity to express respect for America’s foremost infectious disease expert who has been working tirelessly to save lives. He was doing this even while Fox News hacks were comparing him to the sadistic Nazi Josef Mengele, and deploying grotesquely murderous metaphors urging people to “ambush” him in public and go in with the kill shot.”

The article by Fox News portrayed Wallace as being the object of widespread mockery for her comments. But in reality, it was only confirmed right-wing partisans who were hurling insults at her. Every single person cited in Fox’s hit piece was an unabashed wingnut. They included right-wing pundit, Ben McDonald; NewsBusters editor Tim Graham; conservative troll, Drew Holden; Daily Caller columnist, David Hookstead; conservative writer, Mark Hemingway; and right-wing actor, Nick Searcy.

It cannot be mere coincidence that Fox News has hammered out these assaults on three of MSNBC’s most prominent female personalities, all within the space of less than a week. Clearly the folks at Fox feel threatened by smart, engaging women who are effective communicators. So they are lashing out frantically to malign these intelligent, accomplished professionals. And considering the talentless hacks that litter the Fox News schedule, they are also likely writhing in jealousy. Or at least they should be.

Fox News is SHOCKED that MSNBC’s Joy Reid Rightly Berated Them for Killing Off Their Audience

The faux “journalists” at Fox News have long demonstrated that they have a virtually inexhaustible supply of contrived indignation. They stockpile it for occasions when they are justly accused of moral or ethical wrongdoing for which they have no plausible excuse. Then they unleash their manufactured wrath on those who have correctly criticized them.

Joy Reid, MSNBC

On Sunday’s episode of Fox’s MediaBuzz, host Howard Kurtz was worked up about a segment of MSNBC’s The Reidout wherein Joy Reid made an entirely appropriate observation about how Fox News has exacerbated the COVID pandemic by repeatedly lying about its severity and discouraging – and even mocking – common sense mitigating behavior such as wearing masks and getting vaccinated.

For instance, one of their top shills, Greg Gutfeld, recently upchucked a rancid rant advising his already deluded viewers to forego getting vaccinated or getting boosted because so-called “natural immunity” was better. Never mind that “doctor” Gutfeld’s diagnosis is contrary to all of the medical science on the subject. Likewise, Fox’s relentless campaign of coronavirus disinformation has resulted in a pandemic disparity wherein “counties that went heavily for Donald Trump have seen much lower vaccination rates and much higher death rates from COVID.

Which makes the segment on Sunday’s show all the more loathsome. Kurtz began by acknowledging that “the distrust of vaccines by some on the right is so deeply embedded that even Donald Trump can’t convince people that otherwise support him or follow him to get the shots.” Indeed, Trump was recently booed by his “fans” for admitting that he got the booster shot.

However, Kurtz did not acknowledge that the primary cause of the distrust he spoke of was lies propagated by Fox News. Then Kurtz entered into the following exchange with Emily Jashinsky of the ultra-rightist Federalist:

Kurtz: In his speech, Biden said people’s choices are affected by the dangerous misinformation on cable TV and social media. Okay, but here MSNBC’s Joy Reid went way further than that. Let’s take a look.
Reid (video): Probably the most vaccinated company in America is Fox News. They’re all vaccinated. They’re gonna live through this and let their viewers and their fans die. Because they don’t give a damn. It’s just clicks to them. They don’t care what happens. It’s just fun for them.
Kurtz: So Joy Reid says says Fox News wants you to die. What?
Jashinsky: And that’s exactly what she said. And this is just one of the many fireable offences she commits regularly on that show. Even though under normal standards those would be considered fireable offences. And she gets very little criticism from her peers. This isn’t normal. If somebody on the right said said this it would be a huge story because it’s so outrageous. It’s so extreme. And it’s a great example of why the left, why the Biden White House, why Democrats actually struggle to get those vaccine numbers up.

Kurtz’s response to Reid’s commentary materially misrepresented what she said. Reid didn’t say that “Fox News wants you to die.” She said that Fox is “let]ting] their viewers and their fans die. Because they don’t give a damn.” Letting them die is different than wanting it. Reid was making the point that Fox News was irresponsible and unconcerned with the deadly consequences of their politically motivated lies.

Jashinsky’s remarks were even more removed from reality. Since Reid’s commentary could be supported just by quoting Fox News hacks like Gutfeld and Tucker Carlson (who told viewers that the vaccines don’t work), it could hardly be grounds for termination. On the other hand, no one on Kurtz’s program bothered to mention the nauseating and truly fireable offences of Fox Newsers like Lara Logan (who compared Dr. Fauci to the sadistic and murderous Nazi “doctor” Josef Mengele), or Jesse Watters (who urged his viewers to confront Dr. Fauci and to go in with the kill shot. The kill shot with an ambush […] BOOM! He is dead.”).

The hypocrisy of Fox News is nothing new. It is a network that was founded with a mission to deceive and to advance the interests of the GOP (Greedy One Percent). And it has now evolved into the mouthpiece for the Cult of Trump and the authoritarian dystopia he aspires to rule over. What Reid said about Fox News is unarguably true, and Fox’s denial doesn’t come close to disproving it.

Brian Williams’ Passionate and Moving MSNBC Sign Off: ‘My Biggest Worry is for My Country’

Brian Williams has been working for NBC for 28 years. For the past five years he has hosted The 11th Hour on MSNBC. A few weeks ago, however, he announced that he would be leaving the network, and Thursday was his last day.

Brian Williams

Williams distinguished himself as a compelling communicator with a sly sense of humor and talent for biting snark. But in his closing statements before riding off into the sunset, Williams had more serious matters in mind. And his farewell words speak for millions of Americans concerned about the future of this country:

“My biggest worry is for my country. The truth is I’m not a liberal or a conservative. I’m an institutionalist. I believe in this place. And in my love of country I yield to no one. But the darkness on the edge of town has spread to the main roads and highways and neighborhoods. It’s now at the local bar and the bowling alley, at the school board and the grocery store. And it must be acknowledged and answered for. Grown men and women who swore an oath to our Constitution, elected by their constituents, possessing the kinds of college degrees I can only dream of, have decided to join the mob and become something they are not, while we somehow forget who they were. They’ve decided to burn it all down with us inside. That should scare you no end, as much as it scares an aging volunteer fireman.”

Brian Williams deserves our thanks and best wishes for whatever future endeavors he pursues. And in the meantime we must all heed his warning about the “mob” that is threatening to undermine our democracy. Williams has left us with a challenge to defend the American experiment. Hopefully we are up to the task.

Rittenhouse Judge Schroeder Bans MSNBC from Courtroom in Violation of the First Amendment

The trial of teen vigilante Kyle Rittenhouse has produced some bizarre and legally questionable moments. Many of those moments relate directly to the behavior of Judge Bruce Schroeder whose rulings have overwhelming favored the defense and been openly hostile to the prosecution.

Kyle Rittenhouse, Judge Bruce Schroeder

On Thursday this tendency of Schroeder to put his right-wing prejudices on display crossed another line of propriety for a jurist. Responding to a report that a reporter allegedly working for MSNBC News was following a bus that was transporting the jurors, Schroeder interrupted the proceedings to make this alarming declaration:

“I have instructed that no one from MSNBC news will be permitted in this building for the duration of this trial. This is a very serious matter and I don’t know what the ultimate truth of it is, but absolutely it would go without much thinking that someone who is following a jury bus, that is an extremely serious matter will be referred to the proper authorities for further action.”

This is indeed a “very serious matter,” but not for the reasons that Schroeder suggests. There are several problems with how the Judge reacted to this report. First of all, in his statement he admits that he “I don’t know what the ultimate truth of it is.” But he issues his prohibition against MSNBC News anyway. What if the truth is that the reporter was not from MSNBC? What if there was nothing untoward taking place? Then Schroeder punished the network despite it having done nothing to warrant it. That is the definition of government censorship and violates the First Amendment of the Constitution.

What’s more, Schroeder may have gotten the network wrong. Reports variously describe the reporter as having been associated with MSNBC or NBC, two different networks. So it’s pretty sloppy of the Judge to impose such severe penalties when he doesn’t even know who the suspected offender is affiliated with. In addition to that, it is ridiculous to ban MSNBC from the courtroom when reporters from NBC, who were not covered by the order, are still permitted to cover the trial. They can then appear on MSNBC to give their account of the proceedings.

Finally, Schroeder took the extreme measure of banning the entire MSNBC network, rather than just the alleged offender. At best he could have argued that the reporter who was involved should have his courtroom privileges suspended, not for the duration of the trial, but until the facts were ascertained. But Schroeder didn’t take that rational step. Instead he punished everyone at MSNBC, despite the fact that none of them had done anything wrong. It also needs to be remembered that the reporter in question wasn’t found to have done anything wrong either. NBC News released a statement saying that…

“Last night, a freelancer received a traffic citation. While the traffic violation took place near the jury van, the freelancer never contacted or intended to contact the jurors during deliberations, and never photographed or intended to photograph them”

Rittenhouse’s defense attorney has already filed a motion for a mistrial, which Schroeder has yet to rule on. But if anyone is entitled to a mistrial, it’s the prosecution. And Schroeder should be cited for judicial misconduct. He has shown bias throughout this trial. And his disrespect for the Constitution’s guarantee of freedom of the press makes his malfeasance on the bench all the more reprehensible.

MSNBC’s Chris Hayes Exposes Fox News’ Tucker Carlson for the Slimy Little Coward that He Is

The commitment that Fox News has shown for advancing the spread of the coronavirus has been evident from the outset of the pandemic. When they weren’t outright dismissing the threat as a flu or a hoax (in conjunction with Donald Trump), they were disparaging efforts to mitigate the harm, such as wearing face masks and getting vaccinated. The result is that the nation is now suffering from what can accurately be called the Fox News Pandemic.

Fox News, Tucker Carlson, Bullshit Factory

The most offensive objector to the science-based solutions to COVID has been Fox’s Tucker Carlson. He has relentlessly promoted the use of quack cures, espoused paranoid conspiracy theories that the vaccines don’t work, supported the unlawful use of fake vaccination cards, and even exhorted his viewers to make false police reports of child abuse against parents whose children wear face masks.

On Tuesday Carlson was called out on MSNBC’s All In with Chris Hayes. Clearly Hayes was fed up with the blatant hypocrisy Carlson exuded every time he broached the subject of the pandemic. That was especially true when Carlson sought to malign President Biden’s efforts to actually save lives and return the country to some semblance of normalcy.

Most recently, Biden announced an initiative to get more Americans vaccinated. It included having federal agencies and large companies encouraging their employees to either get the shot or be tested weekly. and it was received with overwhelming support, even in a survey by Fox News.

Undeterred, Carlson persisted with his tunnel-vision, knee-jerk, pro-COVID positions. And he did so despite the fact that his employer had already implemented its own policy that is even stricter than Biden’s, requiring daily testing for the unvaccinated. Which led to Hayes unloading on Carlson and his hypocrisy:

“Tucker Carlson has even launched a personal campaign against the horrible, tyrannical employers out there who require their employees to get vaccinated. He has been giving sympathetic interviews to people who have taken the – in my mind – rather extreme step of quitting their job rather than getting vaccinated.”

“Tucker, buddy, I’ve got news for you: The call is coming from inside the house. Your own bosses are doing this. And I’ve got to ask, Why don’t you have the courage of your convictions? The very lowest level of that courage, which of course he’s failed to show, would be to simply use your platform to actually criticize your own bosses who are making this requirement. You could go on air and say ‘Hey, my bosses are doing this and I don’t agree with it.’

“But that would require the tiniest little sliver of moral integrity. You’d have to take some little, slight risk to your bottom line, and your paycheck, and your stature. You’re probably not going to do that. You certainly wouldn’t do the thing that you’ve celebrated in in others, which is to just quit and walk away rather than be subject to this tyranny.”

There are a couple of points in those remarks that Hayes might need to rethink. First of all, to ask Carlson why he doesn’t have the “courage of his convictions” you would have to assume that he has any convictions. And the same thing goes for any questions regarding Carlson’s alleged “moral integrity.”

Not only would Carlson never give up his Fox News gourmet meal ticket over something as principled as integrity, he will never even admit to his audience that Fox News has adopted the very policies that he is so petulantly whining about. Because to Carlson, none of this is about honor or honesty. It is simply about profit, power, and propaganda.

That goes for all of his confederates at Fox News as well. They are happy in the safety of their vaccinated corporate cocoon, while they simultaneously and deliberately frighten their dimwitted, vulnerable viewers away from the proven things that will protect them, their families, and their nation from illness and death. And somehow they still manage to sleep at night.

Trump’s Lawsuit Against His Niece Mary and the NY Times is a Confession that She’s Telling the Truth

Among the psychological disorders that Donald Trump suffers from – in addition to malignant narcissism, antisocial personality disorder, and pathological lying – is one that he has displayed for decades: Hyperlitigious Behavior. Trump is notorious for suing his innumerable perceived enemies on blatantly false grounds. Most of the time he either drops the case or goes down in a humiliating loss.

Donald Trump

Trump’s recent courtroom escapades include his ludicrous suit against Twitter, Facebook, and Google. And then there’s his threat to sue (and impeach) House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. there is also his pretend action against CNN.

On Monday Trump announced his latest legal misadventure wherein he is suing his niece, Mary Trump, and the New York Times for, as stated in the filing, “tortiously breaching and/or interfering with his contractual rights and otherwise maliciously conspiring against him.” Because paranoid delusions are another of his known psychoses. According to Chris Jansing of NBC News (video below)

[Trump is] suing the New York Times and his niece, Mary Trump, over a story about his tax returns. The suit accuses them of engaging in quote ‘an insidious plot to obtain confidential and highly sensitive records which they exploited for their own benefit,’ and puts damages at no less than a $100,000,000. Mary Trump issued a statement, among other things, calling her uncle a quote ‘loser’ [actually “a f**king loser”]. The New York Times [whose story won a Pulitzer Prize] called the suit an attempt to silence news organizations.”

There are multiple obvious absurdities presented by this lawsuit. Beginning with the fact that it is alleging that Mary Trump “smuggled” documents from her own attorney to give to the Times. Of course, all of those documents would actually belong to her as part of her prior litigation. So how could they be characterized as stolen?

Uncle Trump’s suit also claims that Mary Trump had broken a non-disclosure agreement that had already been ruled too vague to enforce. Consequently, there is no merit whatsoever to Trump’s pitiful, poorly drafted, frivolous, nuisance suit. NBC’s Tom winter went on to report that…

“As far as this lawsuit, I think an interesting thing here is that it essentially proves the story. Because if the documents were, in fact, fake, there would be no reason here to sue. The president called this totally fake news when the Times started publishing documents about his tax payments and about his tax returns. So this essentially substantiates their reporting because, otherwise, why would you sue and why would you claim damages?”

Exactly! There can be no claim of damages for the release of truthful materials that were already disclosed in a prior proceeding. But Trump’s lawyers are, as usual, too incompetent to grasp the most basic legal concepts. That’s why some them (i.e. Rudy Giuliani and Sidney Powell) are facing severe disciplinary actions including suspension of their licenses to practice law.

In all likelihood, Trump’s lawsuit will never see a courtroom. If it isn’t thrown out for lacking merit, Trump himself will drop it. After all, he is only exposing himself to much greater legal liability by pursuing this nonsense.

What’s more, the discovery process would force him to turn over even more incriminating evidence. But in the meantime he is using this to deflect from other stories that he doesn’t want people to hear about. Such as the news that he knew that his lies about election fraud were unfounded even as he was disseminating them. That’s how con artists like Trump play the game.

UPDATE: The judge has dismissed Trump’s case against the New York Times saying that it “fail as a matter of constitutional law,” and he ordered Trump to pay all attorneys’ fees and legal expenses.

Joy Reid Unmasks the Republicans ‘Creepy Little COVID-Loving Death Cult’

As the latest wave of the coronavirus pandemic washes over America, the Republican Party and their Ministry of Disinformation (aka Fox News) continues to embrace policies that put more lives at risk and put off the day that the nation can return to some semblance of normalcy.

Republican Virus

If one didn’t know better, it would seem like the GOP is actually rooting for the virus to vanquish more Americans. Sadly, even though one does know better, it still seems that way. Republican governors like Ron DeSantis and Greg Abbott not only reject the guidance of healthcare experts to wear masks and get vaccinated, they impose unconstitutional laws prohibiting localities, businesses, and schools from setting their own rules to keep people safe.

On Wednesday night MSNBC’s Joy Reid addressed this lethal brand of partisan politicking in a video venting directed at the GOP (Givers of Pestilence). She held nothing back in her condemnation of the Republicans’ “creepy little COVID-loving death cult”:

“We begin the Reidout tonight with a message to Republicans. Okay, we get it! COVID is the precious and you love it. You love COVID so much you want it to spread into schools, at the office, in the Walmart, on the cruise ships and at the club. That great spongy ball with the red spikes, you want it pumping through your veins with an Ivermectin chaser. Why do you love it so dadgum much? We have absolutely no bloody idea. But here’s the thing you weirdos, everyone else hates COVID!” […]

“You may want COVID. You may want to ingest horse de-wormer and attend far too many funerals, but we don’t. And it’s not just saying that or tweeting that. California voted that. It is perhaps the first real tangible proof that your creepy little COVID-loving death cult ways are not going to work for you at the ballot box next year. In fact it’s political suicide.”

This is the sort of blunt fearlessness that has made Reid a favorite foil of the right, and particularly of Donald Trump, who pretends not to know who she is. And it’s the sort of honesty that triggers Fox News, who felt compelled to do a story about this monologue that focused solely on the right-wing critics to whom she was referring. What Fox considers to be a newsworthy story is really just an opportunity to disparage a political foe. Fox said that…

“Reid was blasted on social media following the rant, with critics saying she was doing ‘significantly more harm than good,’ and that she was a ‘terrible person.’ One even suggested that she had a ‘mental problem’ and needed to be committed to a hospital.”

Notice that all of those criticisms were really just childish insults. They apparently were unable to disagree on substance with anything that Reid said. Fox then posted several tweets by 3rd rate conservative pundits maligning Reid, as if that bolstered their already feeble argument.

Fox News and the Republicans they prop up should really think twice (or even once) before they take on Reid or other progressives. After all, the unambiguously pro-COVID network can’t dispute the fact that COVID is now almost exclusively the Pandemic of Fox News. Their most-watched hosts are still lying about the efficacy of masks and vaccines. Tucker Carlson even harbors paranoid conspiracy theories that the vaccines don’t work, but sinister Deep State operatives won’t tell you that.

Carlson has also suggested that it would be acceptable for his viewers to commit the felony of counterfeiting official vaccination cards. That must be their way of ensuring that if the Fox/GOP COVID-loving death cultists don’t end up in the morgue, they’ll end up in prison.

Rachel Maddow Fractures Fox News For Hawking a Horse Dewormer as a COVID Cure

Apparently it wasn’t bad enough that Fox News contributed to tens of thousands of deaths, and even more severe illnesses, by downplaying the severity of the coronavirus as a flu or a hoax. And apparently they weren’t satisfied with the suffering they’ve caused by convincing their glassy-eyed viewers that vaccines either aren’t necessary, or don’t work, or are constraints on their freedom imposed by autocrats intent on enslaving them.

Fox News, Cov-Aid

Fox’s efforts have led to what can now be accurately designated the Pandemic of Fox News.” Their primetime purveyors of pandemic bullpucky are clearly determined to propagate even more pain.

To that end Fox News began prescribing another phony cure for the plague that they’ve been reluctant to admit exists. Despite the potential for having a positive impact on their audience, Fox continues to prove that they just don’t care. Previously they tried hype hydroxychloroquine, an anti-malarial drug for which there is no evidence of efficacy treating COVID, other than the grossly misinformed word of Donald Trump. But now they’ve moved on to Ivermectin, a horse dewormer.

Yes, you read that right. And you aren’t the only one to be stunned by the sheer idiocy of this media quackery. When MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow heard about it she launched into a righteous condemnation of both the reckless advice and the Fox News advisors (video below):

“The Mississippi State Department of Health confirming today that ‘At least 70% of the recent calls to poison control in Mississippi have been related to livestock or animal formulations of Ivermectin, purchased at livestock supply centers.

“Why are people taking livestock formulations of Ivermectin Mississippi? That’s a horse dewormer. Literally, people won’t take the vaccine because they’re super suspicious of that, but they’re taking horse deworming medication that they’re buying at a feed store? For COVID? Why, on top of everything else Mississippi has to deal with right now, why are they dealing with this? I don’t know, but I have a guess.”

Whereupon Maddow plays clips of the three Fox News primetime hosts peddling Ivermectin to their viewers:

Laura Ingraham: We know that our FDA has in many ways failed us by not allowing for the use of Ivermectin and hydroxychloroquine, both of which are used around the world to reduce COVID hospitalizations and death.
Sean Hannity: I pelted them with questions about COVID-19 and the vaccine and therapeutics hydroxychloroquine, Ivermectin … as well as other proactive treatments and practices that are already helping COVID -19 patients all across the country.
Tucker Carlson: On June 5th [Bret] Weinstein discussed the benefits of a drug called Ivermectin, which can and is used around the world to treat and prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

Maddow then points out that there has only been one “significant” study connecting Ivermectin to COVID, but that it was withdrawn “because the data in it was apparently faked and the introduction to it was apparently plagiarized.” To date, no one on Fox News has withdrawn their advocacy of the drug. As Maddow noted in her closing…

“Nevertheless, Fox News is busy saying, ‘Don’t take the vaccine, but do take this horse deworming medication, trust us, it is proven.’ You could trust them or you could trust the FDA that says ‘Do not take Ivermectin for COVID.’ Or the NIH that says ‘Do not take Ivermectin for COVID.’ Or the WHO that says ‘Do not take Ivermectin for COVID.’ Even the company that makes the drug that says ‘My god, seriously people. Do not take Ivermectin for COVID.'”

You might think that that would finally be enough for Fox News to step back and retract their potentially lethal “reporting.” If so, you just know Fox News.

Trump-Fluffing Network OAN Loses Appeal of Defamation Lawsuit Against Rachel Maddow

In September of 2019, MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow was sued by the network that is America’s most worshipful mouthpiece for Donald Trump and radical right politics, One America News (OAN). The suit charged Maddow with defamation because she accurately reported the network’s association with Russian connected media. From the start it was a meritless case that had no hope of success.

Donald Trump, OAN

OAN’s lawsuit was triggered by a segment on Maddow’s program that revealed that an OAN correspondent, Kristian Rouz, also reported for the Kremlin owned and operated network, Sputnik. Maddow correctly observed that…

“In this case, the most obsequiously pro-Trump right-wing news outlet in America really literally is paid Russian propaganda. Their on-air U.S. politics reporter is paid by the Russian government to produce propaganda for that government.”

In May 2020, the case was thrown out by a U.S. District judge who ruled that “there was no set of facts that could support a claim for defamation based on Maddow’s statement.” In support of that opinion the judge noted that OAN never actually alleged that the facts were defamatory or even that they were in dispute. The ruling affirmed Maddow’s protections under the Constitution’s First Amendment, stating that her commentary consisted of allowable opinion based on truthful and verifiable information.

Now OAN has lost their appeal of that ruling in a federal appeals court. What’s more, OAN has been ordered to pay $250,000 to MSNBC for legal fees. According to the Daily Beast

“Fringe right-wing network One America News lost the appeal of its defamation suit against MSNBC and star host Rachel Maddow on Tuesday, with a panel upholding a previous federal court ruling against OAN that required them to pay $250,000 of the defendants’ legal fees.

“OAN, owned by Herring Networks, initially sued Maddow for $10 million in July 2019 after the MSNBC star said on her show that the Trump-boosting network is “paid Russian propaganda,” calling her remarks ‘malicious and utterly false.'”

Why OAN ever sought to file this suit in the first place is curious. They knew that their “reporter” was a Russian Sputnik stooge. They knew that Maddow merely reported that fact. And considering the torrent of falsehoods that are broadcast on OAN everyday, you would think they they would be hesitant to draw attention to their unsavory relationship with Russian shills.

Furthermore, OAN has been disseminating Russian propaganda in their regular programming by latching on to Trump’s “Big Lie” that the 2020 presidential election was “stolen” from him. That’s precisely the same narrative that Russia uses to undermine faith in American democracy. Their extremism has gone so far as to actually call for the execution of Trump critics.

This failed lawsuit by OAN is not their only legal tribulation. They are also being sued by Dominion voting Systems for defamation in a multibillion dollar case that includes Fox News as a defendant.

OAN is well aware of the legal jeopardy they face, as they demonstrated when they ran a hysterical “disclaimer” prior to a program featuring the MyPillow guy, Mike Lindell, asserting that he had “Absolute Proof” of election fraud. He didn’t. And yet, OAN is still embracing Lindell and Trump and their election lies. This is going to cost them bigly before it’s through.

MSNBC’s Nicolle Wallace Nails Biden’s Afghanistan Speech: The People vs the Media

A lot has and will be said about President Biden’s decision to withdraw American troops from Afghanistan and the method with which he did it. Needless to say Fox News and Donald Trump’s Republican Party will embark on their predictable knee-jerk condemnation of Biden regardless of how events transpire.

Nicolle Wallace, MSNBC

Trump has already rolled out his narcissistic version of the situation that he neglected for four years, other than to negotiate a deal with the Taliban that was tantamount to full surrender. He lifted all the sanctions on them, released 5,000 of their prisoners, including their founder and leader, and promised to remove all U.S. and allied forces by last May.

As for the GOP and their Ministry of Disinformation (aka Fox News), they launched a coordinated, and wholly dishonest, campaign to disparage Biden and portray him as on vacation while he was actually working at Camp David, a military facility run by the U.S. Navy.

On Monday afternoon Biden addressed the American people to explain the reasoning behind his decisions regarding finally ending America’s involvement in the Afghanistan war (video below). It was a speech that was equal parts elucidation, compassion, and accountability. Some of the highlights include…

“We went to Afghanistan almost 20 years ago with clear goals: get those who attacked us on Sept. 11, 2001, and make sure Al Qaeda could not use Afghanistan as a base from which to attack us again. We did that.” […]

“That was a decade ago. Our mission in Afghanistan was never supposed to have been nation-building.” […]

“I stand squarely behind my decision. After 20 years, I’ve learned the hard way that there was never a good time to withdraw U.S. forces.” […]

“The truth is, this did unfold more quickly than we had anticipated.” […]

“If anything, the developments of the past week reinforced that ending U.S. military involvement in Afghanistan now was the right decision. American troops cannot and should not be fighting in a war and dying in a war that Afghan forces are not willing to fight for themselves.” […]

“I made a commitment to the American people when I ran for president that I would bring America’s military involvement in Afghanistan to an end. While it’s been hard and messy and, yes, far from perfect, I’ve honored that commitment.” […]

“I know my decision will be criticized. But I would rather take all that criticism than pass this decision on to another president of the United States.”

Following the speech MSNBC anchor, Nicolle Wallace, gave a profound summation of the different ways Biden’s words would be received by the public and the press. She said that…

“95% of the American people will agree with everything he just said. 95% of the press covering this White House will disagree. And for an American president to finally be completely aligned with such an overwhelming majority of what the American people think about Afghanistan is probably a tremendous relief to the American people.”

Wallace is exactly right. The media seems to have a built in favoritism for whatever generates the most conflict and melodrama. But the American people have long favored an end to the seemingly perpetual conflicts that began after September 11th, 2001. And that opinion is shared by both Democrats and Republicans. Even Trump and his cult disciples have been opposed to continuing the war in Afghanistan. He ran on it, just like Biden did.

Of course, that won’t stop Trump and his GOP confederates from lambasting Biden for achieving the goal that they never could. They are jealous of his successes, whether it be foreign affairs, infrastructure, healthcare, or any of the other failures by Trump and company.

It’s ironic that Wallace is one of the few television commentators to recognize both the desires of the public and biases of the press. She was the White House Communications Director for George W. Bush, the president that got us into this mess to begin with. Which makes her insights all the more relevant and welcome.
