DO-NOTHING CONGRESS? The Republican House of Representatives is the Least Productive Ever

As 2023 draws to a close, it’s a good time to reflect on the progress – or lack thereof – made by America’s political class in Washington. This year began with the Republican Party assuming a narrow majority in the House of Representatives. They promised that they would use that status to advance an agenda that would benefit the nation and its citizens.

Donald Trump, Congress, Mike Johnson

That promise was never fulfilled. To the contrary, Republicans managed to snag a record for passing fewer bills (20) than any Congress in modern times. But what makes that “achievement” all the more humiliating is that they seem to be proud of their ineffectualness. It’s hard to argue that they weren’t purposefully determined to be political slackers. Particularly if you listen to what they have said about themselves…

SEE THIS: GOP Wants a Government Shutdown Because ‘Most of What We Do is Bad, Hurts the American People’

Considering what Republicans proposed to do in the year leading up to their congressional majority, the country might want to count their blessings that the GOP are so inept. After assuming power, they immediately set aside the issues that they ran on, such as banning abortion, racist immigration policies, tax relief for corporations and the wealthy, befouling the planet, guns for everyone, everywhere, and manufactured outrages against buzzwords like CRT, DEI, and “wokism.”

Instead, the GOP set their sights on personal political vendettas, fighting among themselves, and running defense for Dear Leader Donald Trump. As result, they managed to pass only twenty bills, most of which were trivialities such as naming buildings. The exceptions, such as raising the debt ceiling and reducing inflation, only passed with majority Democratic support.

The year end analysis of the GOP’s pitiful performance was even recognized by Fox News, who ran a segment on what they called the “Do-Nothing Congress,” with a chyron that read “Congress Has Historically Unproductive 2023.”

However, perhaps they are being unduly harsh. The 118th Congress wasn’t entirely unproductive. In fact, they scored some notable records for a majority party in the legislature. And it’s high time we give credit where credit is due. For instance…

  • The GOP held more votes (15) to elect a Speaker (Kevin McCarthy) than ever before.
  • They nominated more Speaker candidates (Steve Scalise, Jim Jordan, Tom Emmer, Mike Johnson), after ousting their first Speaker nine months later, than any prior Congress.
  • They spent more time (three weeks) to run through those Speaker candidates before succeeding in electing an unknown backbencher (Mike Johnson) with dubious credentials.
  • They introduced more articles of impeachment (for President Biden, DHS Sec. Alejandro Mayorkas, FBI Director Chris Wray, U.S. Attorney Matthew Graves, and Attorney General Merrick Garland) than ever.
  • And they entered more dick pix (1) into the congressional record during televised hearings than any of their predecessors.

With that record of achievement, how can anyone disparage the work ethic of the Republicans currently in charge of the House? They are clearly an energetic bunch of eager beavers intent on wasting taxpayer money and smearing their political opponents with pointless probes and knee-jerk obstructionism.

Without a doubt, they have been more prolific in those endeavors than anyone who has come before them. And no one should deprive them of that “honor.” They have even made time to help Democrats produce campaign ads that illustrate just how productive they were when they held the majority…

HUH? GOP Says the Sham Biden Impeachment is Legit Because GOP Committee Chairs Are on TV a Lot

The Republican members of the House of Representatives are fiercely dedicated to their singular mission of maligning President Biden and every other Democrat that they encounter. They have utterly abandoned any pretense of serving their constituents or carrying out the duties to advance the welfare of the American people or the nation.

Click here to Tweet this article

Joe Biden, GOP, Elephant

In pursuit of their bitterly partisan goals, the GOP is preparing to vote on whether to stage a thoroughly ludicrous Biden impeachment inquiry, despite not having the slightest hint of evidence of any wrongdoing. It is such a blatant farce that even Fox News has reported on the GOP’s shameless inability to produce any facts to support their smear campaign…

SEE THIS: WHOA! Peter Doocy of Fox News Reports that the GOP Failed to Find Any Evidence to Impeach Biden

On Tuesday morning the Republicans held a hearing to debate the Impeachment inquiry proposal. It was predictably devoid of any substance that would justify either an inquiry or an impeachment. However, it was chock full of asinine arguments by Republicans trying desperately to defend their dimwitted determination to destroy Biden. And leading the pack was GOP Rep. Guy Reschenthaler, who sought to rationalize the alleged “transparency” of a process that Republicans have been insisting be conducted behind closed doors. He GOP-splained that…

“They’ve continued to update. Not just Chairman Comer, but Chairman Jordan, Chairman Smith. They’ve been on TV…You can’t turn on a news program without seeing one of those three updating the American people on this. So to say that we’ve come up lacking in transparency is laughable.”

That’s right! It was all above board because recidivist liars like James Comer, Jim Jordan, and Jason Smith, are frequent guests on Fox News and Steve Bannon’s War Room. They actually believe that that sort of perpetual media presence is how congressional business is supposed to be conducted. They have adopted the Trump perspective of Reality TV being de facto reality.

In fact, what Reschenthaler is describing is precisely why the Republican plans are preposterous and intolerable. They are hoping to hold the hearings in private, and then only reveal on right-wing television programs what they claim took place. They will, of course, deliver grossly biased distortions of reality in their TV appearances. And they will mischaracterize whatever “evidence” they choose to present. This is the same process they previously proposed for deposing Hunter Biden…

SEE ALSO: GOP and Fox News Oppose Public Testimony By Hunter Biden Because Then They Can’t Lie About It

This isn’t conjecture. Republicans have already demonstrated that they will brazenly lie about testimony given in private. That tendency was noted by Democratic Rep. Mary Gay Scanlon, who responded to Reschenthaler’s nonsense saying that…

“Mr. Reschenthaler is absolutely right. The three chairs of the committees conducting this sham impeachment inquiry have been all over the news. On Fox, on Newsmax, every night, mischaracterizing what they’ve found. Mischaracterizing what witnesses have said.

“And that’s why it’s important that, if this is to go forward, the American people will be able to judge for themselves. There’s a pattern and practice at this point of the Republican majority hiding what’s going on, only cherry-picking the evidence that they want to move forward. Disregarding when it’s contradicted, even by their own witnesses.”

If Republicans go forward with their phony impeachment inquiry it will likely backfire on them, just as all of their prior attempted smears have done. They think that the American people are stupid. But who can blame them when the only people they have any personal contact with are the ones who watch Fox News? The rest of the nation will be heard loud and clear next November when Republicans are driven from office.

Newsmax Tells Slack-Jawed GOP Chair that He and His Biden Probe ‘Looked Like a Joke’ on CNN

The Republican Party in the House of Representatives is preparing to vote on whether to initiate a formal impeachment inquiry for President Biden, despite not having been able to produce a single shred of evidence of any wrongdoing after years of frantic digging. It’s part of an ongoing smear campaign that they have undertaken because they haven’t got anything resembling a positive legislative agenda.

Joe Biden, Newsmax

It should be noted that the GOP already has three committees engaged in informal impeachment inquiries. However, they have collectively produced nothing but humiliation for Republicans as their attempts to malign Biden inevitably backfired due to their brazen dishonesty. Their own witnesses ended up testifying that Biden had done nothing remotely untoward that would justify impeachment. In fact, their ineptitude has been so flagrant that even Fox News noticed…

SEE THIS: WHOA! Peter Doocy of Fox News Reports that the GOP Failed to Find Any Evidence to Impeach Biden

One of the committees currently harassing Biden is the Oversight Committee, chaired by GOP fabulist James Comer. In a recent interview on CNN Comer was made a laughingstock by Jake Tapper for his absurd assertions that Hunter Biden was indicted in order to protect him and cover up something or other…

Following that fiasco, Comer scampered off to Newsmax where he expected to get a much more friendly reception. And in point of fact, he did. However, Comer is such a nimrod that he botched the softballs lobbed at him. The Newsmax host, Rob Finnerty, brought up Tapper’s interview and gave Comer an opportunity to clean it up…

Finnerty: “He’s making your investigation sound like a joke, and he’s trying to make you look like a joke. And then half of America sees that and they think your investigation is a joke. How do you work around that?
Comer: Well, that’s the first time I went on CNN in three months. We thought we would give it a try. You know, Jake Tapper is an intelligent guy, but he’s playing to a low IQ audience. CNN is hemorrhaging viewers every day. And Jake’s doing what he’s told by his bosses at CNN, who are doing what they’re told by their bosses at the Democrat National Committee. CNN is a wholly owned unprofitable subsidiary of the Democrat National Committee.

So Comer’s first response is to note that he has been too afraid of being interviewed on CNN for the past three months. Then he praises Tapper, but insults the IQ of his audience. Never mind that the IQ of the Newsmax audience has be be considerably lower considering they have fully adopted the crackpot conspiracy theories of QAnon and still support Donald Trump, the twice-impeached, pathological liar, who is facing 91 felony charges, and has been adjudicated as a financial fraudster and rapist.

Furthermore, while CNN’s audience has declined, so has almost every other cable news network in the era of cord-cutting and streaming. And Newsmax trails Fox News, MSNBC, and CNN, by significant margins. That may have something to do with the fact that it is a “wholly owned unprofitable subsidiary” of the Trump Cult, aka the Republican National Committee.

Perhaps the most striking thing about Comer’s response to being made to look like a joke, is that in his entire reply he never disagreed with it. He admitted his fear of CNN, his low opinion of their audience, and his ignorance of the cable news business. But he didn’t bother to dispute the contention that he and his probe of Biden looked like a joke. Because… how could he? What with all the laughter.

Upcoming Republican Primary Debates May Have Only Two Candidates – But Still No Cowardly Trump

The race for the Republican Party’s nomination for President in 2024 has been a laughably lame affair that appears to be modeled after a third rate reality TV show. It’s “Apprentice – White House” without the boorish board room finale where the playacting potentate pretends to fire one of the contemptible contestants.

Click here to Tweet this article

Donald Trump, Republican, GOP

From the start of election season the Republican National Committee (RNC) assumed dictatorial control of the production of these debates with a series of decrees that sought to establish their supreme authority over the process and the candidates. For instance, they prohibited all candidates from participating in any debate not sanctioned by the RNC. They also demanded that all candidates sign a pledge to support whoever the eventual GOP nominee was. As if Trump would keep such a promise.

SEE THIS: RNC Chair Thinks Trump Would Honor a Pledge to Support the GOP Nominee if it Isn’t Him

Apparently the RNC is softening their stance. They are now saying that they will waive their demands to boycott non-RNC sponsored debates. Perhaps that’s because the debates they have produced so far have been fiascos that featured infantile tantrums while avoiding any matter of interest to voters. They have also resulted in sequentially lower ratings for each broadcast. Consequently, CNN has just announced that they will sponsor two debates prior to the Iowa caucuses and the New Hampshire primary.

CNN’s announcement said that “The events will provide Republican voters an opportunity to hear the governing philosophies of the leading candidates.” But that seems like a lofty goal that they are unlikely to achieve. After all, the previous debates were hardly forums for learning about the candidates “governing philosophies.” And that isn’t likely to improve considering the conditions they have set for participation…

“To qualify for participation in the Iowa debate, candidates must receive at least 10% in three separate national and/or [Iowa/New Hampshire] state polls.”

By that criteria, the only candidates, other than Donald Trump, who currently qualify for the Iowa debate are Ron DeSantis and Nikki Haley. And the only non-Trump candidates who currently qualify for the New Hampshire debate are Nikki Haley and Chris Christie. There is still time for others to meet the criteria prior to the debates, but there are no guarantees that they will succeed.

Should the debates wind up being the head-to-head matchups noted above, they might actually be more interesting. And the absence of the obnoxious blowhard,” Vivek Ramaswamy, would be a welcome relief.

For his part, Trump has declined to participate in any of the four debates already held. And given his increasingly severe psychological slippage, that’s probably a wise decision on the part of his handlers. These days Trump spends most of his time posting either hostile attacks on his perceived enemies, or cultish adoration of himself on his failing Truth Social scam. And his conspicuous cowardice, along with his mental maladies, keep him from sharing the debate stage with his primary challengers, which would only embarrass him and his party further.

So even as the roster of Republicans is reduced with each week that goes by, Trump can be expected to cower in his Mar-a-Lago bunker launching spitballs at his foes, who will deftly avoid any criticism of Dear Leader. And the RNC will continue to prop him up as their inevitable nominee, despite his unmistakable cognitive decline and authoritarian aspirations. This is the state of the Trump Era Republican Party.

GOP and Fox News Oppose Public Testimony By Hunter Biden Because Then They Can’t Lie About It

The Republican Party’s control of the House of Representatives has been a chaotic nightmare from day one. It took them fifteen votes to select a Speaker. Then, nine months later they dumped him and took another three weeks to select his replacement. They have been a master class in disorganization, ultra-partisanship, and utter neglect of the people’s business.

Click here to Tweet this article

Donald Trump, Republican, GOP

In fact, the GOP has been so determined to avoid any substantive progress that they have engaged only in political stunts, attacks on President Biden and his administration, and petty assaults on other Democrats. They have initiated impeachment inquiries into Biden and several members of his Cabinet, despite having zero evidence of any wrongdoing. They have even admitted that their antics were intended to harm their political foes.

SEE THIS: GOP Speaker Admits the Purpose of the Biden Impeachment Inquiry is to Hurt Biden Politically

Among the pseudo-scandals that Republicans have been pursuing is the harassment of the President’s son, Hunter Biden. However, every attempt to pin some random crime on him has resulted in the GOP humiliating themselves. The hearings they scheduled ended up proving that none of the Republican charges were valid.

Consequently, the chairman of the House Oversight Committee, James Comer, has now subpoenaed Hunter to testify before Congress. Hunter accepted the request with the stipulation that his testimony be done in a public hearing. But Comer rejected that offer and insists that Hunter be deposed in private.

To be clear, Comer previously held public hearings when he thought that they would embarrass Democrats. But since it was the GOP that looked shameful, Comer is now opposed to hearings in public. He has learned that they only expose the GOP’s weakness and dishonesty. But if held in private, he can distort and lie with impunity, at least for a while.

Naturally, Fox News has come to the rescue of Comer and the GOP with a segment on an episode of its “outnumbered” program. And the task of justifying the sudden affinity for private testimony fell to Michele Tafoya, a former sports sideline commentator (video below). Tafoya said that…

“I prefer hearings to be done behind closed doors because I actually think that they get to the heart of the matter, and they get some truth, and they can ask questions without preening for the camera, without all the grandstanding. That is my preference.”

Of course, they can do all of those things in live, public hearing as well. If she is worried about members or witnesses “preening” for the camera, that’s the responsibility of the chairman to keep the hearing in order. Which they’ve shown no ability to do. She went on…

“And for Abbe Lowell, his attorney, to say, ‘Well, you all use that to misinform and to distort the facts.’ Well you know what? You can do that too, Abbe. After he comes out of his closed-door session, you feel free to knock yourself out and you can distort too. I mean it’s a silly argument.”

Notice that Tafoya is actually agreeing that Republicans would “misinform” and “distort the facts.” And she excuses it by offering to allow Democrats to do the same. But Democrats would reject that offer because they have no interest in lying the way Republicans do.

Tafoya also claimed that Hunter “would love nothing more than to sit, have cameras pointed at him.” Where she got that from is a complete mystery. He has been profoundly camera shy since he was thrust into the political circus created by Republicans and Fox News.

Comer’s attempt to hide behind closed doors was shredded by Democratic Rep. Jamir Raskin, who responded saying

“Let me get this straight,” Raskin said in his statement. “After wailing and moaning for ten months about Hunter Biden and alluding to some vast unproven family conspiracy, after sending Hunter Biden a subpoena to appear and testify, Chairman Comer and the Oversight Republicans now reject his offer to appear before the full Committee and the eyes of the world and to answer any questions that they pose?” […]

“Chairman Comer’s insistence that Hunter Biden’s interview should happen behind closed doors proves it once again. What the Republicans fear most is sunlight and the truth.”

Exactly! Comer’s efforts to hide Hunter’s testimony is the best evidence that he knows there is nothing untoward to reveal. If Comer thought there was something there, he would be the first one to insist on public hearings. Instead, he plans to continue his crusade of deceit and defamation. It’s really all they have.

GOP is Drooling Over January 6th Video that Tucker Carlson Already Tried and Failed to Distort

Nearly three years after the violent insurrection at the Capitol that Donald Trump incited, Republicans and right-wing media are still trying to defend it as nothing more than a stroll through the park with a few thousand rampaging pals who were miffed that Congress was about to carry out their constitutional duty to certify that Joe Biden had won the election.

Click here to Tweet this article

Fox News, Tucker Carlson, Q Shaman

There really is no rational debate as to whether Trump’s cult followers stormed the Capitol, seeking to obstruct the process, vandalizing public property, and terrorizing members of Congress and their staff. The American people watched it live on television as it happened, and the documentary, testimonial, and video evidence is overwhelming.

However, the irrational debate rages on in MAGA Land with the announcement that 44,000 hours of video will be made available to the public by the new Republican Speaker of the House. Mike Johnson. Rest assured that the rabidly partisan “MAGA Mike” has ulterior motives underlying this, as he does for everything.

SEE THIS: GOP Speaker Admits the Purpose of the Biden Impeachment Inquiry is to Hurt Biden Politically

The quantity of video is hard to comprehend. One person watching 24 hours a day would take five years to see all of it. Nevertheless, releasing them could be seen as an act of transparency by the government, if done properly. But don’t expect that to be the case with the Republicans in charge of the project. There will likely be inappropriate security breaches, unexplained missing footage, and Johnson has already said that faces will be blurred in order to help the lawbreakers get away with their crimes.

In the meantime, Republicans are downright giddy over the prospect of being able to distort and distribute their versions of events by selectively editing what they disseminate. Many of them rushed to express their excitement online, including…

  • Donald Trump: “Congratulations to Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson for having the Courage and Fortitude to release all of the J6 Tapes, which will explicitly reveal what really happened on January 6th!”
  • Rep. Clay Higgins “Prepare to be shocked. This release will reveal the insidious truth that the left and the corrupt officials at FBI/DOJ do NOT want Americans to see. No less than 5-10 key Democrats will announce they’re retiring from Congress. Don’t doubt me.”
  • Sen. Mike Lee: “How many of these guys are feds? (As if you’d ever tell us).”
  • Rep. Troy Nehls: “This is what they’ve been hiding from you, the American people. Do you need any more proof that January 6 was NOT an insurrection?”
  • Rep. Lauren Boebert: “Speaker Johnson has released all the January 6 tapes. Promises made. Promises kept.”
  • Rep. Mary Miller: “Thank you, Speaker Johnson. The American people have a right to see this footage after the lies they were told by Pelosi’s January 6 Witch Hunt Committee.”
  • Rep. Andy Biggs: “Full access to January 6 tapes below. Americans can now see the truth for themselves without the bias from the J6 Committee, mainstream media, and radical Left.”

Apparently lost in this feasting frenzy is the fact that the former GOP House Speaker, Kevin McCarthy, already released these videos exclusively to the pro-insurrection, Putin loving poseur, Tucker Carlson, while he was still employed by Fox News.

SEE ALSO: House Squeaker Kevin McCarthy Hands Over 41,000 Hours of January 6th Video to – Tucker Carlson?

True to form, Carlson produced a flagrantly biased program that portrayed the hostile MAGA horde as peaceful tourists visiting the nation’s capitol. He deceitfully described the StormTrumpers as “orderly and meek.” His ludicrous narrative was widely mocked and dismissed as the propagandistic trash that it was. And in the end, he aired only a few carefully edited, and particularly boring, minutes of the 40,000+ hours of video over two nights that revealed nothing of significance.

MORE HERE: Tucker Carlson Spins January 6th Insurrection Videos to Spread Blatant Lies, Trump Praises Him

Expect more of the same when Republicans and their MAGA mouthpieces in the media begin rolling out their “analyses” of the January 6th videos. They will feature chopped clips of languid moments in empty hallways and then conclude that nothing happened. It’s like playing video of JFK smiling and waving at the cheering crowds in Dallas prior to the shooting, and using that as evidence that he was never assassinated. That’s the level of “logic” employed by the MAGA-publicans.

Republican Congressman Makes a Great Case – and Political Ad – for Voting Against Republicans

The Republican Party has long held the position that government is an evil institution that can only make life worse for its citizens. They refuse to accept any notion that a democracy in America can advance the interests of the people. Instead, they insist that government doesn’t work and then, when they have some measure of authority, they prove it by their malicious mismanagement.

Click here to Tweet this article

Donald Trump, Republican, GOP

This anti-American philosophy can be traced back at least to Ronald Reagan, who preached that “Government is not the solution to our problems, government is the problem.” That dismal and cynical perspective renouncing the concept of a self-governing nation has lately been bolstered by the Donald Trump era’s brand of GOP politics. Today’s Republicans frolic in the failures of legislative affairs that they believe are inherently harmful. In fact they’re proud of it…

SEE THIS: GOP Wants a Government Shutdown Because ‘Most of What We Do is Bad, Hurts the American People’

On Wednesday Republican Rep. Chip Roy took to the floor of the House of Representatives to chastise members of his own party for their conspicuous incompetence and inability to get anything done. His anger was intended as criticism of the GOP’s failure to pass absurd and meritless legislative assaults against Democrats. However, it will play much better as an ad for Democrats seeking to highlight the ineptitude of Republicans, which the campaign for President Biden quickly jumped on. “Chips Ahoy” Roy ranted that he wanted…

One thing. I want my Republican colleagues to give me one thing. One. That I can go campaign on and say we did. One. Anybody sitting in the complex, if you want to come down to the floor and come explain to me, one meaningful, significant thing the Republican majority has done

Indeed, the Republicans haven’t managed to move a single piece of significant legislation that might benefit the people. Although it did take them fifteen votes to elect Kevin McCarthy as their Speaker. But then they ousted him and took three more weeks to select his replacement, Mike Johnson. In the meantime they held hearings on Hunter Biden, gas stoves, honoring January 6th insurrectionists, and impeaching President Biden on the basis of zero evidence of any wrongdoing.

Producing pro-Democratic ads has become something of an avocation for Republicans and right-wing media. Previously, Marjorie Taylor Greene whined that Democrats were doing a variety of wonderful things that most Americans support. An appreciative Biden campaign turned into a pro-Biden advertisement.

SEE IT HERE: President Biden Trolls Marjorie Taylor Greene’s Hysterically Lame Swipe at Democratic Successes

The folks at Fox News weren’t going to be ignored in this endeavor. So “Outnumbered” co-host Emily Compagno itemized some of the crazy conspiracy theories to which Mike Johnson has subscribed. Which made another strong argument against the GOP and in favor of Democrats.

SEE IT HERE: HAH! Fox News Turns Mike Johnson’s Conspiracy Theories Into a Great Campaign Ad – For Democrats

Democrats owe the Republican party a debt of gratitude for their inadvertent honesty and helpful advertisement production. It will save the Democrats a lot of money they would otherwise have had to spend on producing ads themselves.

Unfortunately, the downside is that the American people are being shortchanged by not having a functional legislative branch of government at a time when the nation and the world needs the leadership that the U.S. can provide. But on the basis of the GOP’s own arguments, hopefully Republicans will be voted out of office so that intelligent, compassionate, patriotic, adults can restore confidence in the American system of government and in democracy itself.

GOP Speaker Admits the Purpose of the Biden Impeachment Inquiry is to Hurt Biden Politically

Ten months ago the Republican Party assumed a sliver-thin majority in the House of Representatives. That entitled them to choose the Speaker of the House and control all of the business that is conducted, including what legislation is considered and passed. Performed responsibly, it’s an opportunity to shape the direction of the country and to serve the people’s interests.

Click here to Tweet this article

Joe Biden, GOP, Elephant

Unfortunately, expecting Republicans to perform responsibly is just too much to hope for. After an unprecedented fifteen votes to elect Kevin McCarthy as Speaker, they spent eight months of aimless meandering during which they achieved nothing of substance. They barely kept the country from a devastating default on its debt. And they merely delayed a government shutdown because they are unable to pass routine appropriations bills. The only thing they seem to be any good at is holding partisan hearings designed to smear President Biden and the Democrats.

SEE THIS: New GOP Subcommittee Chair Openly Admits His Only Purpose is to ‘Make Life Hell’ for Democrats

More recently, Republicans ousted Speaker McCarthy and spent three weeks trying to elect a replacement. Finally, they settled for MAGA Mike Johnson, perhaps the most extreme right-winger to ever sit in the Speaker’s chair. Now the Washington Post is reporting that Speaker Johnson has had a preconceived agenda to weaponize Congress in order to damage Biden’s prospects for reelection. The Post found that…

“In a closed-door meeting with House GOP moderates this week, [Johnson] indicated that there is insufficient evidence at the moment to initiate formal impeachment proceedings, according to people who attended the meeting. [But] Johnson appeared to agree with Republican lawmakers who argued that since Biden’s polling numbers have been so weak, there is less of a political imperative to impeach him.”

There are two disturbing revelations in this. First, Johnson doesn’t actually believe his prior insistence that Biden is likely guilty of impeachable crimes. He’s just been saying that to satisfy his rabidly anti-Biden House GOP caucus. And secondly, Johnson is admitting that the real purpose of the impeachment inquiries that he has supported were to hurt Biden, but that since Biden’s polling has declined, so has the “political imperative to impeach him.”

This is reminiscent of former GOP Speaker McCarthy bragging on Fox News that the Benghazi probe’s purpose was to politically hurt Hillary Clinton. In May McCarthy’s lackey, James Comer, chairman of the House Oversight Committee, made similar boasts on Fox News about the current Biden/Trump match up saying that…

“You look at the polling, and right now Donald Trump is 7 points ahead of Joe Biden and trending upward, Joe Biden’s trending downward. [because] the American people are keeping up with our investigation.”

What is abundantly clear is that everything that Republicans have been doing with regard to investigations of Biden has been solely to denigrate Biden’s character and record. And they are arrogant enough to actually confess their ethically-challenged tactics on national television. They couldn’t care less about alleged “high crimes and misdemeanors,” which they haven’t been able find any of anyway.

SEE ALSO: Fox News and GOP Impeachment Chair Seek ‘Damning Evidence’ Against Biden, But Can’t Find Any

Even after acknowledging their nefarious motives, Republicans are persisting in their campaign of slander against the President. Comer just issued subpoenas for Hunter Biden and James Biden, and requested voluntary closed-door interviews with other Biden family members. Never mind that they have no evidence whatsoever of any wrongdoing by any member of the family.

This is just the latest effort to defame Biden and, ultimately, to help Trump, for whom there actually is ample evidence of criminal activity (four indictments on 91 felony charges). No wonder Republicans in Congress are so obsessed with disparaging Biden. Look at who their candidate is, and what his problems are.

GOP Oversight Chair Spins Litany of Lies Alleging Biden Financial ‘Scandal’ that Doesn’t Exist

The Republican Party has pursued a singular legislative focus throughout the administration of President Joe Biden. That focus, unfortunately for the American people, has been to try to manufacture scandals aimed at smearing the reputation of Biden, rather than to pass bills that advance the interests of the nation and its citizens.

Click here to Tweet this article

Joe Biden, GOP, Elephant

The neglect of their congressional duties has prevented the most basic functions of the House of Representatives from being carried out. Those include avoiding a catastrophic debt ceiling default, and passing the appropriations bills that keep the government from shutting down. Recently, this GOP fixation on maligning Biden has even seeped into critical emergency funding for America’s allies in Israel and Ukraine.

SEE THIS: Republicans in Congress are Holding Israelis Hostage to Aid for Wealthy American Tax Cheats

Now, after a humiliating three week long quest for a new House Speaker, Republicans have returned to the bitterly partisan work that they think is most important for the country. And leading the charge is GOP Rep. James Comer, chairman of the House Oversight Committee. In his role as chairman, Comer was tasked by the ousted GOP Speaker, Kevin McCarthy, with conducting “impeachment inquiry” hearings based on nothing more than the their obsession with dragging Biden down. And on Wednesday morning, under the direction pf new GOP Speaker Mike Johnson, he proudly showed off the rotten fruit of his odious labor.

Comer released a video wherein he sought to reveal what he regards as “smoking gun” proof that Biden had received extorted funds from China. The only problem with the fairy tale that Comer weaved was that it lacked any evidence whatsoever of any impropriety on Biden’s part. Other than that it was spellbinding. And naturally, Fox News was all over this faux scandal, and Donald Trump posted four comments about it on his failing social media scam, Truth Social.

In the video (posted below), Comer made multiple baseless assertions, including his blatantly false claim that “$40,000 in laundered China money landed in Joe Biden’s bank account.” He also alleged that “It all began with a shakedown in the summer of 2017” instigated by Hunter Biden. Elaborating, Comer said that…

“As Hunter Biden extorted this associate, Hunter claimed he was sitting with his father and that the Biden network would turn on his associate if he didn’t pony up the money. The extortion scheme worked.”

Notice that there is no proof that Hunter Biden was “sitting with his father,” or that President Biden was involved in any way. But that didn’t stop Comer from using such loaded language as “laundered,” “shakedown,” and “extortion.”

Then Comer struggled to piece together a labyrinthine path of fund transfers that allegedly went from a Chinese company, through some Biden family businesses, and eventually to Joe Biden. But Comer never manages to show any relationship between any of these financial transactions and the President. They are simply business transactions that occurred over time, followed by a personal loan repayment to Joe Biden. This isn’t the first time that Comer has attempted – and failed – to use this brazen distortion of events to bash Biden.

By the same “logic” that Comer is contorting you could say that Comer laundered funds from the U.S. government (his congressional paycheck) to pay his mortgage. But even in his own conclusion, Comer admits that there is nothing of substance in his meandering fairy tale, saying that…

“It’s certainly plausible that this payment where James and Sara [Biden] used funds from China was indeed a loan repayment to Joe. But even if this $40,000 check was a loan repayment from James Biden, it still shows how Joe benefited from his family cashing in on his name”

No, it absolutely does not show that Joe Biden benefited. You cannot claim that he benefited when all he got out of it was a loan repaid by his brother without interest. Nevertheless, Comer lies outright saying that all of this “began when Joe Biden was still Vice President.” But Comer is contradicting himself. He started his video saying that “it all began … in the summer of 2017,” when Biden was neither an officeholder nor a candidate.

Finally, Comer closes by asserting with zero evidence that “Joe Biden exposed himself to future blackmail and put America’s interests behind his own desire for money.” Once again, there is no proof of any of that. No proof whatsoever of blackmail, or personal interest, or greed. Nor is there any proof that any policies were adopted that benefited the Chinese companies that Comer mentions.

Literally everything that Comer disgorges in his “bombshell” video is unproven, illogical, and driven by blind political animus. But it does explain why he recently told reporters that “I don’t know that I want to hold any more hearings, to be honest with you,” because he now prefers depositions which “you can do more with.” By which he means more lying.

No wonder Comer is afraid to hold more hearings. He knows that the hearings he has held thus far have only embarrassed him and his Republican confederates. They have not only failed to incriminate Biden, they have actually exonerated him. And as Jessica Tarlov of Fox News noted, “If there were any ‘smoking guns’ around, you’d probably have more hearings.”

Republicans in Congress are Holding Israelis Hostage to Aid for Wealthy American Tax Cheats

It may be difficult to imagine these days, but there used to be certain issues that Democrats and Republicans agreed on. Most prominently were those issues that addressed national security and a commitment to our international allies. But in the era of Donald Trump and his MAGA cult, the best interests of America have been scrapped in favor ultra-partisanship and devotion to an aspiring authoritarian figurehead.

Republican Cash

Evidence of the degradation of congressional comity is painfully apparent in the proposal by the new Republican Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson, to provide emergency humanitarian aid to Israel. While he has only been in the Speaker’s chair for a week, Johnson has already demonstrated that he is an extremist conservative whose priorities could not be farther away from those of the American people.

President Biden has offered a plan to aid Israel in its fight against Hamas terrorists. The plan also includes aid to our allies in Ukraine and funding for border security. But while Senate Republicans and Democrats are both supporting Biden’s proposal, Johnson and Republicans in the House have refused to consider it. They have instead put forward their own bill that pairs the emergency aid for Israel with offsetting cuts to the federal budget, specifically the funding that Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act provided to the IRS.

One of the reasons that Republicans oppose Biden’s proposal is because they object to joining two separate subjects (Israel and Ukraine) in the same bill. But that’s exactly what the GOP is doing with their proposal for aid to Israel combined with slashing IRS funding. So they think that it’s wrong to pair aid for two allies whose people are being slaughtered by terrorist aggressors, but it’s okay to pair humanitarian aid with a budget cut that will allow wealthy American tax cheats to get away with their crimes. Good to know.

What’s more, Republicans are framing their phony legislation as offsetting the aid for Israel with federal budget cuts elsewhere. But cutting the IRS budget will only reduce the revenue that the agency is able to generate. Which the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office estimates would be $200 billion over a decade. So the effect of the GOP bill is to increase the deficit by spending on aid for Israel, and increasing the deficit even more by further reducing revenue.

This is a double hit on the debt that leaves our allies in Ukraine in grave peril, and lets the tax cheats who finance Republican campaigns off the hook. But that isn’t all. It would also make it harder for the IRS to investigate and sanction unlawful funding for worldwide terrorism. And because the GOP bill has little chance of passing in the Senate or getting the President’s signature, it is also imperiling the aid to Israel. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre addressed these matters saying that…

“Politicizing our national security interests is a nonstarter. Demanding offsets for meeting core national security needs of the United States – like supporting Israel and defending Ukraine from atrocities and Russian imperialism – would be a break with the normal, bipartisan process and could have devastating implications for our safety and alliances in the years ahead.”

Make no mistake, Republicans don’t care about Israel or Ukraine or the deficit or even border security. They are focused solely on throwing a monkey wrench into anything that Biden proposes. It’s a brazenly political ploy to create legislative chaos, and then try to blame Biden and Democrats for it. They tried that before with the debt ceiling and the government shutdown, but it didn’t work. Undeterred, they still think that they will be able to attack Democrats for voting against the aid for Israel, even though it was the Republicans’ deliberate poison pill in the bill that doomed it to failure.

The American people, however, are smarter than Republicans give them credit for. And the GOP will be exposed for, once again, putting party before country, even at the expense of innocent lives. This is the agenda of the new GOP Speaker and the razor-thin Republican majority in the House. And their callousness, greed, hypocrisy, and anti-Americanism will not be forgotten when voters go to the polls next November.
