Ted Cruz Babbles that if All Firearms in America Were Eliminated there Would Be More Murders

Nine years ago Bobby Jindal, the Republican governor of Louisiana, admonished his fellow Republicans to “stop insulting the intelligence of voters” and to “stop being ‘the stupid party.'” Instead of taking that uncharacteristically sound advice, they chose to hitch their wagon to the Ignoramus Supremo, Donald Trump.

Ted Cruz, Making Machine Gun Bacon

Today the Republican Party seems to be hell-bent on affirming its commitment to the crackpot constituency. They display a decided preference for baseless blather and flagrant lies, rather than facts and reality. And among the best representatives of that political strategy is Texas senator Ted Cruz.

On Tuesday Cruz visited with right-wing pundit Michael Knowles of the uber-conservative Daily Wire to discuss the gun reforms being proposed in the wake of the Uvalde massacre in Cruz’s home state. To no one’s surprise, Cruz conveyed his knee-jerk opposition to any of the common sense reforms that are so popular among the majority of the American people, and that his governor callously dismisses.

RELATED: Nicolle Wallace Fact Checks Texas Gov. Abbott: We Are Not Gonna Let Him Gaslight Anybody Today

In an effort to grab the Dumbest Member of Congress crown from Rep. Lauren Boebert, Cruz unleashed a ludicrous rant that is sure to put him in the running. Cruz said that…

“Taking away every firearm that Michael Knowles owns would not have stopped this psychopath from murdering children in Uvalde. And by they way, we see that in Chicago and New York and D.C. and California, where they have very strict gun control and the criminals still have guns and still carry out murders. If you could wave a magic wand and eliminate all firearms in America, there would be substantially more murders than there are today.”

Cruz is absolutely right. Taking guns from Mr. Knowles surely wouldn’t have stopped the Uvalde murderer. However, national laws restricting access to assault weapons, mandating background checks, banning high-capacity ammo magazines, implementing red flag rules, etc., might very well have had an impact. It is just stunningly stupid for Cruz to make that utterly disingenuous suggestion about taking “all” guns away from a single right-wing blowhard. And while no one is proposing banning all guns, if that were to happen, only a world-class moron would believe that it would result in more murders.

Cruz is also absolutely wrong about the examples he gave of places where stricter gun laws are not having any effect. If he were to have done the slightest bit of research he would have found that the states with the most lax regulations are where the most gun deaths occur. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the ten states with the highest per capita mortality rate due to guns are…

  1. Mississippi (28.6 per 100k)
  2. Louisiana (26.3)
  3. Wyoming (25.9)
  4. Missouri (23.9)
  5. Alabama (23.6)
  6. Alaska (23.5)
  7. New Mexico (22.7)
  8. Arkansas (22.6)
  9. South Carolina (22)
  10. Tennessee (21.3)

That list tells a story all by itself. For the record, California and New York, which have among the nation’s strictest gun laws, rank at #44 (8.5 per 100k) and #46 (5.3 per 100k), respectively. These stats include fatalities due to suicide, which should not be dismissed out of hand. However, when only murders are counted, the rankings are nearly identical. What’s more, 79% of murders in the U.S. in 2020 involved a firearm.

Clearly, as revealed in a recent study, there is a direct correlation in states with weaker gun laws having higher rates of gun deaths. Furthermore, the study found that the need for national regulations is necessary because “Despite strong gun laws, some states still feel the effects of being close to a state with more lax regulations.”

All of this information was available to Cruz when he shot off his mouth. But he was too preoccupied with establishing his idiocy to care about being correct. And that’s true for most of the Republicans addressing this (and almost any other) issue. It would be a ripe vein for comedy if it weren’t for all of the corpses that are piling in our schools, grocery stores, temples, etc.

Insurrectionist Trump Toady Mo Brooks Warns that Guns Are Needed to ‘Take Back Our Government’

In the wake of the tragic massacre in Uvalde, Texas, the debate over how to prevent future such atrocities rages on in Congress and in the press. And as is common during these debates, there is an over abundance of hypocrisy, hyperbole and flagrant dishonesty.

Donald Trump Insurrection

Among the more repugnant reactions to this mass shooting at an elementary school is the one taken by Rep. Mo Brooks (R-Trumpist) of Alabama. Brooks is currently locked in tight Republican primary race for the Senate. Consequently, he is exploiting every opportunity to grab media exposure to offset the fact that he was recently un-endorsed by Donald Trump because “he went woke” by suggesting that Republicans should put the 2020 election behind them.

RELATED: At Trump Insurrection Convention GOP Rep. Mo Brooks Says to Prepare to Sacrifice Your Lives

Brooks, it should be noted, is not retracting his support for the “Big Lie” that the 2020 presidential election was “rigged,” or altering his view that “Trump was robbed.” He’s just making a political judgment that moving on would benefit GOP candidates. And if there were any doubt about his devotion to the insurrection that he helped to incite on January 6, 2021, Brooks removed it during an appearance on Fox News Sunday:

Sandra Smith: Would you support any changes to the current gun laws on the books?
Brooks: Let’s, for emphasis, understand what the 2nd Amendment is about. The 2nd Amendment is designed to help ensure that we, the citizenry, always have the right to take back our government should it become dictatorial. That was a great fear of the Founding Fathers and, quite frankly, it’s a fear today. And as long as we enjoy uninfringed Second Amendment rights then we don’t really have to worry that much about the government ever becoming dictatorial. But the moment that we take from our citizenry our ability to take our government back is the moment that the ability of dictatorial forces increases to the point where perhaps they will try to implement a dictatorial government at the federal level.

Like every other right-wing 2nd Amendment fetishist and NRA-Theist, Brooks is misinterpreting what the amendment means. It had nothing to do with rising up against the U.S. government. It was intended to ensure that citizens could arm themselves, as part of a “well regulated militia,” to defend the U.S. against foreign invaders.

What Brooks is advocating is the violent overthrow of the U.S. government in the event that he and his neo-fascist confederates disapprove of the democratic will of the American people. In other words… Insurrection! He’s proposing that seditionists take up arms against the U.S. military and fellow citizens.

This is, unfortunately, not the only ultra-idiotic opinion about guns that is emanating from the radical right. For instance…

As for Brooks, his persistent advocacy of insurrection could result in his being prohibited from holding elective office. A recent ruling by a federal appeals court found that “Candidates who take part in an insurrection may be barred from holding public office under the 14th Amendment of the US Constitution.” Upholding that ruling would go a long way toward ensuring that Trump’s brand of treason and tyranny does not threaten the principles that actually did make America great.

Trump’s NRA Speech Showed He’s Still Angry, Ignorant, and Severely Mentally Dysfunctional

History is repeating itself as the National Rifle Association (NRA) lacks the decency to postpone their annual convention taking place in Houston, Texas, just days after the tragic mass shooting of children at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas. Before a single funeral has been held, the NRA is celebrating their sick and deadly obsession with gun culture and the manufacturers who profit from it.

Click here to Tweet this article

Donald Trump AR-15

The NRA’s decision to proceed with the convention did not have the universal approval of their participants. Many canceled their planned appearances, including cowardly politicians Gov. Greg Abbott, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, and Sen. John Cornyn, as well as entertainers Don McLean, Larry Gatlin, and Lee Underwood. However, among those remaining on the schedule were Sen. Ted Cruz and, of course, former reality TV game show host, Donald Trump.

In the opening to his address, Trump exalted himself saying that “Unlike some, I didn’t disappoint you by not showing up,” Which is true. If anything, showing up was the actual disappointment. His speech was littered with tiresome tirades that have been festering within the pro-gun community for decades.

RELATED: Lauren Boebert Vies for ‘Dumbest Member of Congress’ Title: ‘We Didn’t Ban Planes’ After 9/11

For instance, Trump whined about what he called “a grotesque effort by some in our society to use the suffering of others to advance their own extreme political agenda.” Which, of course, is what he and the NRA are doing. The allegedly “grotesque efforts” he is attacking actually reflect the majority will of the American people to prevent future massacres.

Then Trump added that “Even more repulsive is their rush to shift blame away from the villains who commit acts of mass violence and to place that blame onto the shoulders of millions of peaceful law abiding citizens who belong to organizations, such as our wonderful NRA.” Which, of course, no one is doing. Rather, concerned citizens are acknowledging the role that lax regulations and access to military-style assault weapons play in the body count of innocent victims of the “villains.”

Central to Trump’s message to the NRA-Theists is the classic gun-nut doctrine of absolving firearms of having any connection to the harm they cause, and chastising Democrats for daring to want to do something about it. Trump babbled that…

“Whatever our differences may be on other issues, what on Earth is stopping Democrats from immediately passing measures to ramp up school security? How many more tragedies will it take until they agree to set aside their far left political agenda and do what is really needed and actually works.

This is not about virtue cycling, and signing. This is about blaming your enemies. No, we don’t wanna do that. This is about saving our children’s lives. Yes, that’s what we want to do. Surely we can all agree that our schools should not be the softest target. Our schools should be the single hardest target in our country.”

Let’s unpack that nonsense step by step. To begin with, Trump’s citing security cannot be taken seriously when the Uvalde massacre occurred despite the presence of many police officers who were too scared to confront a perpetrator armed with an assault weapon. Secondly, what Trump is maligning as a “far left political agenda” is actually the mainstream view of most Americans. Thirdly, what works are measures that restrict easy access to weapons of war. Fourth, accepting the definition of schools as “targets,” whether soft or hard, is patently offensive. They are learning institutions, not battlefields or prisons. The teachers are not soldiers and the students are not combatants.

What’s more, it’s hard to ignore how Trump stumbles in his remarks in a manner that exposes his mental frailty when he gets to the part about “virtue cycling, and signing.” The words he is mangling off of his TelePrompTer is the phrase “virtue signaling,” a derogatory reference to expressions of moral character. No wonder Trump is so agitated by it that he can’t even utter it correctly. But then he goes on to positively embrace the notion that “This is about blaming your enemies.” But when he heard himself make that gaffe, he pretended, as he often does, that he did it on purpose. This is the “stable genius” speaking?

Both Trump and the NRA refuse to acknowledge that guns are a significant factor in tragedies like the one that just occurred un Uvalde. They prefer to blame mental health, an issue that they are also resistant to resolving. In fact, they deliberately make it worse. The first bill that Trump signed when he began his occupation of the White House was one that reversed an Obama-era regulation that restricted gun purchases by people with mental illnesses. And Texas governor Greg Abbott cut $211 million dollars from mental health care services in his state.

RELATED: Nicolle Wallace Fact Checks Texas Gov. Abbott: We Are Not Gonna Let Him Gaslight Anybody Today

The one constant in all of this is the determination of the right to shield guns, and the corporations that manufacture and market them, from any and all responsibility for the pain they inflict on innocent victims, including children. And Trump is only to happy to obediently subjugate himself to his corporatist masters in order to secure their assistance in his quest for wealth and power.

Nicolle Wallace Fact Checks Texas Gov. Abbott: We Are Not Gonna Let Him Gaslight Anybody Today

The parade of the protectors of assault weapons and their manufacturers continued in Texas on Friday as their Republican governor, Greg Abbott, held another press conference to run cover for corporations that profit from death. It was just more of the same stubborn defense of lethal firearms, and deflection of blame to inadequate mental health services, for which Abbott and his ilk are also responsible.

Click here to Tweet this article

Nicolle Wallace, MSNBC

On Thursday Abbott’s pro-gun presser was interrupted by the Democratic candidate for governor, Beto O’Rourke, who chastised Abbott for doing nothing to stop the “totally predictable” slaughters that recur way too often in America. Equally predictable is the coverage by Fox News and other right-wing outlets that are intent on shutting down the sort of dialogue that O’Rourke was attempting to encourage.

RELATED: In a Repulsive Political Rant Tucker Carlson Accuses Biden of Politicizing the Uvalde Massacre

On Friday Abbott’s affair was interrupted again. This time by Roland Gutierrez, the Texas State Senator whose district includes Uvalde, TX. Gutierrez pleaded with Abbott to take some proactive measures to prevent future bloodshed (video below):

“My colleagues are asking for a special session, you’re getting a letter tomorrow. We’ve asked for gun control changes, I’m asking you now to bring us back in two weeks. I apologize for interrupting your press conference about the needs of this community. […]

“I don’t know how to express the loss of the families that I’ve talked to. I know you feel it too. We have to do something. Your own colleagues are telling me, calling me and telling me, an 18-year-old shouldn’t have a gun. This is enough. Call us back. Just call us back.”

Abbott smugly ignored Gutierrez and asked if there were any other questions. But just at that moment, MSNBC’s Nicolle Wallace cut into the telecast to deliver some pertinent background information about what was taking place. Saying that “We’ll listen, but we are not gonna let [Abbott] gaslight anybody today,” Wallace continued…

“I want to provide a little bit of context to the gentleman who stood up to Gov. Abbott right there inside this press conference. We believe that was Democratic State Senator Roland Gutierrez who called for a special session. He and others have pressed this governor of a state in which nineteen third and fourth graders were slaughtered by a weapon that Gov. Abbott doesn’t believe should be illegal, in a process that Gov. Abbott doesn’t think should be illegal, without a background check that Gov. Abbott doesn’t think is necessary.

“Gov. Abbott’s solution for making sure that the slaughter at Uvalde doesn’t happen again is mental health services. And, again, he slashed $211 million from the state’s mental health services. The state of Texas comes in 50th in terms of access to mental health care that it provides to its citizens.”

That’s precisely how these sort of self-serving “news” conferences should be covered. The dishonesty of bought-and-paid-for politicians like Abbott needs to be revealed at every opportunity, and right when it occurs. The cretins who keep trying to lay the blame on mental health know that it’s a phony excuse designed to shield the gun lobby from responsibility. Many other countries also have people with mental problems who are not butchering their fellow citizens.

However, even if you were to take their excuses seriously, the people clinging to them are the same ones who oppose providing adequate health care for their constituents. It’s the same story in Washington as it is in Texas. Republicans have obstructed every common sense gun reform measure for decades. Usually making utter fools of themselves as they struggle to articulate a coherent argument against reforms that the vast majority of Americans support. And, sadly, this will continue until voters manage to expel every one of these unrepresentative slimeballs from office.

Lauren Boebert Vies for ‘Dumbest Member of Congress’ Title: ‘We Didn’t Ban Planes’ After 9/11?

The contest for “Dumbest Member of Congress” is always a competitive affair that pits such legends of lunacy as Louis Gohmert, Matt Gaetz, and the eminently idiotic Marjorie Taylor Greene, against one another. The caliber of the crackpottery is so impressive that it’s near impossible to choose a winner.

Lauren Boebert

However, on Thursday one contender made a valiant effort to lead the pack. Lauren Boebert appeared on Sean Hannity’s Fox News program to field some softballs from guest host Tammy Bruce. The subject was the massacre in Uvalde, Texas, that Fox News has been callously politicizing, while accusing concerned Democrats of being political. Bruce and Boebert discussed the potential of legislative initiatives to prevent future tragedies. Bruce asked Boebert “what the next step can be taken for some real change here.” Whereupon Boebert unleashed some stellar stupidity that assures she will remain a top contender for dimwit distinction:

“I want our schools secured. I want their children protected, and I want teachers that can protect themselves and their students. […] Sandy Cortez tweeting at me, but she hasn’t taken up my offer to meet an work together. And of course we saw Beto acted like a total jerk, and tried to use the deaths of these children as a prop to advance his political candidacy. When 9/11 happened, we didn’t ban planes. We secured the cockpit.”

Boebert joins the rest of the Republican gun fetishists in blaming everyone and everything for the tragedy , except for guns. She parroted the right-wing narrative that advocates turning schools into prisons and teachers into armed guards. She follows that up with some typically infantile insults aimed at Rep. Alexandria Cortez-Ocasio and Beto O’Rourke, who she whines won’t meet with her. Why would anyone want to meet with Boebert, whose childish behavior betrays her intellectual vacancy?

RELATED: FLAGRANT FOWL: QAnon GOP Rep Blames ‘Biden’s America’ for Chick-fil-A Sauce Shortage

Boebert’s repugnant personality notwithstanding, what truly sets her apart from the pinhead pack is her contention that “we didn’t ban planes” after 9/11. Really?

First of all, this is an utterly ludicrous analogy. There is no similarity whatsoever between the singular terrorist attack by Al Qaeda two decades years ago, and the horrifyingly frequent mass shootings that occur, uniquely, in the United States. Secondly, just as no one proposed banning all planes after 9/11, no one is proposing banning all guns now.

Although, even if we patronize Boebert’s bizarre analogy, she is making a great case for regulating guns. The truth is that air travel was broadly regulated after 9/11. Passengers have to provide government issued identification. They have to remove their shoes and belts and any metal objects from their pockets. They can’t carry aboard any common objects like scissors, or containers of liquids more than eight ounces. They and their baggage are screened with x-rays.

RELATED: QAnon Rep Lauren Boebert Has a Sad Over Biden Doing What He Was Elected To Do

In other words, the 9/11 incident resulted in the implementation of numerous strict regulations to increase public safety. So by Boeert’s alleged logic, guns should be similarly regulated, and for the same reason. But don’t expect her to grasp that. Her cognitive capabilities are too limited to understand what she’s saying. Which is precisely why she ranks so high on the imbecile scale in the first place.

In a Repulsive Political Rant Tucker Carlson Accuses Biden of Politicizing the Uvalde Massacre

Fox News, and the Republican Party for which it stands, has established a nauseatingly predictable response to the sort of tragic event that occurred on Tuesday in Uvalde, Texas. To the cretins on Fox there is never a good time to discuss the causes of, or solutions to, mass shootings. And any effort to do so is characterized as politicizing a tragedy.

Click here to Tweet this article

Fox News, Guns Logo

The problem with that is that it guarantees that there will be more carnage and grief for which right-wing partisans will only offer “thoughts and prayers” – again. They seem to be hell-bent on preserving a status quo wherein victims – even children – are repeatedly slaughtered in order to avoid offending the National Rifle Association (NRA) or, even worse, cooperating with President Biden and the Democrats to implement solutions that will save lives and that most Americans favor.

RELATED: HOLY SHHH! Fox News Links Mass Shootings to the COVID Vaccine

Leading the charge of the callous crusaders is Fox’s Senior White Nationalist and bootlicking Putin puppet, Tucker Carlson. And on Tuesday evening he demonstrated his determination to advance the NRA’s ammosexual agenda. In a tiresome tirade seeking to portray Biden as politicizing the shooting, Carlson shamelessly politicized the shooting:

“The president of the United States, frail, confused, bitterly partisan, desecrating the memory of recently murdered children with tired talking points of the Democratic Party, dividing the country in a moment of deep pain rather than uniting. His voice rising, amplified only as he repeats the talking points he repeated for over 35 years in the United States Senate, partisan politics being the only thing that animates him. Unfit for leadership of this country.”

Carlson’s analysis of of the speech that Biden gave on Tuesday (video below) is not just childishly insulting, it’s profoundly at variance with reality. Nothing that Biden said could be coherently described as “desecrating the memory of recently murdered children.” Nor was it “dividing the country,” that is united in support of the reforms that Biden and Democrats in Congress have proposed. But Carlson was just getting started:

“What a moment this would’ve been if he had stopped a sentence in and said we’re gonna pray for these families and let’s let this marinate for a minute. Let’s stand respectfully before a tragedy. And Joe Biden has lived tragedy so he can say that with some credibility. He moved immediately into some DNC rant off a cue card. That’s the president?” […]

“To stand before the image of murdered children, and your first impulse is, ‘I can be more powerful if only I leverage this in the right way.’ I am in shock having seen the president on the United States call for more power for himself. That is his answer?”

So Carlson’s solution is to “let this marinate for a minute”? Whatever that means. And he continues to accuse Biden of having ulterior motives of securing “more power for himself.” However, Carlson never explains how enacting common sense gun reforms that are broadly popular makes Biden more powerful.

Carlson’s guest, Fox and Friends co-host Will Cain, complained that funds were spent on Ukraine and COVID that should be used on “protecting schools” instead. Seriously? The shooting in Texas was unquestionably horrendous. But comparing tragedies to one another is the province of a sick mind. Tens of thousands of lives have been lost in Ukraine and millions of people have become refugees in this battle for democracy. As for COVID, which Carlson has dismissed as a distraction or a hoax, the United States recently passed the one million mark of fatalities. A decent and humane country has a heart big enough to care for all of these matters.

RELATED: Tucker Carlson of Fox News Says ‘Vaccines Don’t Work and They’re Not Telling You’

In the speech that Carlson was “shocked” by, Biden showed compassion and commitment to stemming the epidemic of gun violence. And perhaps that’s exactly what bothers him so much.

“I had hoped, when I became President, I would not have to do this again. Another massacre. Uvalde, Texas. An elementary school. Beautiful, innocent second, third, fourth graders. And how many scores of little children who witnessed what happened. […] As a nation, we have to ask: When in God’s name are we going to stand up to the gun lobby? When in God’s name will we do what we all know in our gut needs to be done? […] For every parent, for every citizen in this country, we have to make it clear to every elected official in this country: It’s time to act.”

HOLY SHHH! Fox News Links Mass Shootings to the COVID Vaccine

Wednesday morning the nation awakened to yet another mass shooting. We can expect the usual NRA apologists to begin sending out their “thoughts and prayers,” while doing their best to obstruct any constructive reforms. But we could not possibly have expected that Fox News would feature an “expert” law enforcement analyst speculating that mass shootings were somehow linked to the COVID-19 vaccine. Could we?

Fox News, Guns Logo

Never mind that Fox News and the Republican Party have laid out an agenda that calls for less voting and more guns. And set aside that their proposed solution to the epidemic of mass shootings is to initiate “Idiot Control.”

In the course of breaking news coverage of yet another active shooter incident, this one in San Jose, California, Fox’s Harris Faulkner invited retired NYPD detective Pat Brosnan to provide his analysis fo the situation. Brosnan began with a bizarre commentary on the “Summer of Love of 2020” (presumably a facetious reference to the Black Lives Matter demonstrations), but then launched into this bit of brain-damaged commentary (video below):

“Crimes are no longer illegal. There’s no longer an enforcement of lots of laws. And there’s an empowerment of these active shooters.”

Say what? Needless to say, those deranged observations were not supported by any coherent discussion of how, precisely, crimes ceased to be illegal or active shooters have been “empowered.” But Brosnan was just getting started:

“Once COVID starts to lift, these cowardly shooters will come out exactly in tandem with the number of vaccinations. You can be sure they probably got vaccinated. They were just scared to come out. And they’re coming back, and you can see the numbers don’t lie. The shootings are up dramatically. Skyrocketing, actually, on active shootings throughout the United States as we’ve come through this pandemic. It’s really terrifying stuff.”

Brosnan was speaking out of a bodily orifice that is significantly below his mouth. His speculation about shooters having been vaccinated is pure fantasy and utterly insane. There’s a vague insinuation in there that the vaccine is turning otherwise ordinary people into mass murderers. The reality, of course, is that it’s the unvaccinated who are more likely to cause deaths by furthering the transmission of the coronavirus and its variants.

What’s more, there is no evidence whatsoever of mass shootings in the United States occurring “in tandem with vaccinations.” If anything, it was the administration of Donald Trump that produced a spike in gun violence. And Brosnan wants you believe that shooters were too “scared to come out,” but not too scared to grab a gun and shoot people with the certain knowledge that the police will show up and shoot back. If there was a decline in mass shootings in the past year, it wasn’t because the shooters were too scared to come out. It was because their potential victims were.

This is another example of Fox News trying desperately to muddle the discourse on an issue that their right-wing, ammosexual, GOP patrons are too scared to face honestly. They have no rational arguments to support their gun worship, or to deal with the fact that the vast majority of the American people support the reforms proposed by Democrats. So they fling rhetorical feces in an effort to numb the minds of their dimwitted viewers. Which really shouldn’t take much effort at all. And as always, now will not be the right time to talk about reform.

UPDATE: The Los Angeles times is now reporting that the gunman “set his own house on fire before he drove to a Valley Transportation Authority union meeting and began shooting.” Also, “Sources said the suspect is believed to have killed himself after the mass shooting.” So he really fits the profile of someone who was concerned about getting vaccinated to keep from catching a deadly virus, huh?

Tucker Carlson Goes Full Insurrectionist: Promotes AR-15’s to Use Against Government

It’s on people! Tucker Carlson, the Senior White Nationalist at Fox News, is openly advocating violent insurrection. He is justifying his support for the ownership and use of military-style weapons by fear mongering about a tyrannical government that must be brought down by the same sort of paranoid seditionists that attacked the Capitol on January 6th.

Fox News, Tucker Carlson, Q Shaman

Fox News and its Republican benefactors have been known to exploit the 2nd Amendment issue extraordinarily hard whenever there is a mass shooting. In the past week they have made it their mission to ignore the recent incidents that took the lives of 18 people. They preferred to cover petty distractions like President Biden walking up stairs. They care more about suppressing voters than suppressing killers.

On Carlson’s program Tuesday night he interviewed ammosexual Colion Noir, who once hosted a “show” on the now defunct NRA-TV. The two of them belittled the tragedy that just took place in Boulder, Colorado, while glorifying the weapon that produced the carnage. Their discussion was steeped in extremist rhetoric that sounded like the ravings of a deranged, dystopian, apocalyptic prophet (video below). For instance…

Carlson: “Why, if somebody does something horrible in Boulder, does that mean you should strip from people the single most popular sporting rifle in America? The one that commits relatively few crimes. More people are killed by a factor of five by knives than by rifles in this country. Why are they so intent on taking this one firearm away?”
Colion Noir: “Because honestly, if you really look at it, a lot of people like to undervalue what the 2nd Amendment was actually written for. It was designed to be a check against the government. A lot of people don’t like to talk about that aspect. Of course it was also there to allow us to defend ourselves. But if you think about it, the AR-15 symbolically and literally is the best defense against a tyrannical government.

Carlson starts off by dismissing the “horrible” thing that happened in Boulder as something forgettable that deserves no response. He euphemizes the AR-15 as a “sporting rifle,” despite it’s intended purpose as a human meat grinder. Where’s the sport in that? And he downplays the brutal deaths of hundreds of innocent people as a “relative few.” So long as they weren’t his relatives. Carlson also doesn’t bother to address the fact that 26% of the last 80 mass shootings were done with AR-15s.

Noir goes even further to demonstrate his utter contempt for and ignorance of the Constitution. The 2nd Amendment says absolutely nothing about a “defense against a tyrannical government.” In fact, it explicitly refers to a “well regulated Militia” that would be assembled for the benefit of the state. It’s purpose was to be prepared to fend off foreign invaders, not George Washington’s troops.

Noir went on to assert the tiresome trope that regulating assault weapons was merely a slippery slope to confiscating all firearms. And he didn’t seem to be the least bit disturbed about “another shooting that happens, which it will.” He just viewed that as the left’s opportunity to “justify further restricting our rights again.” Never mind the shattered families grieving for their dead loved ones.

What neither Carlson nor Noir understand is that their warped fantasies of battling the U.S. government would end very badly for them. Their assault weapons wouldn’t protect them very long from the Army’s drones, grenade launchers, missiles, tanks, and bombers. You have to wonder if Carlson and Noir believe citizens should be allowed to own those as well. You also have to wonder what happened to their sloganeering about “Blue Lives Matter” and “Supporting the Troops”? Because that is who these phony “patriots” are fantasizing about going to war against.

This whole discussion came dangerously close to a televised conspiracy plot for treason. It exposes these crackpots as anti-American poseurs who have orgasms dreaming of wartime adventures they’re too cowardly to ever engage in. And it is more of the insanity that drove hundreds of Trump supporters to attack Congress in an attempt to overturn an election. If they get their way, there will be further attempts to stage authoritarian coups. And the blood will be on the hands of Carlson, Noir, and Fox News.

Republican Senator Proposes ‘Idiot Control’ Initiative on Idiot TV (aka Fox News)

There’s a certain burst of irony whenever Fox News attacks something that it is notorious for doing itself on a daily basis. It’s a syndrome often referred to as “projection,” but with the fervor with which Fox deploys it, it’s more like hyper-hypocritical gaslighting. And it’s a tactic Fox uses to both malign their foes and inoculate themselves from well-deserved criticism.

Fox News, Idiot Control

Then again, there are times when the irony meter just spins wildly off the scale. Such moments aren’t particularly rare on Fox News. One occurred this week when they preempted coverage of the Colorado mass murder to run stories mocking President Biden walking up stairs instead. Another occurred when a Fox News host falsely announced that the Secretary of Homeland Security had resigned during a live phone-in with Donald Trump.

Another such moment came on Tuesday when Republican Senator John Kennedy of Louisiana was interviewed on Fox News by Sean Hannity. The topic was the latest mass murder in Colorado and the subsequent debate over gun control. Consistent with the long-held conservative position on the matter, both Hannity and Kennedy expressed their knee-jerk opposition to any of the reforms that the American people are overwhelming in favor of, including Republicans. But Kennedy wasn’t satisfied with merely bucking the national tide on the issue:

“You don’t stop drunk drivers by getting rid of all sober drivers. Which is what many of my Democrat friends want to do with respect to the 2nd Amendment. In my judgment, we don’t need more gun control, we need more idiot controls.”

This is wrong on so many levels. First of all, there are numerous laws that address the problem of drunk drivers, none of which involve getting rid of all sober drivers. But they do require that all drivers, sober and otherwise, be accountable for irresponsible behavior that endangers themselves and others due to excess alcohol consumption.

What’s more, all drivers must comply with regulations that require driver training, testing, registration of vehicles, licensing, and insurance. Is Kennedy suggesting that gun owners be held to similar standards? There is no question that guns are at least as dangerous, potentially, as cars. and they require at least as much training to operate safely.

Secondly, Kennedy is imagining things when he claims that his Democratic “friends” want to get rid of all legal gun owners. Either he’s lying through his tooth, or he doesn’t really have any any friends. There isn’t a single Democrat who has ever proposed anything that remotely resembles a ban on all firearms.

Finally, Kennedy’s proposal for “idiot control” as an alternative to gun control is interesting. It could be a real solution to many of our nation’s problems. Although it might be difficult to implement it. Would Kennedy have the government round up designated idiots and place them in monitored facilities where they wouldn’t pose a risk to the rest of us? Would he require that idiots be registered and identified by visible patches on their clothing or tattoos? Would idiots be prohibited from owning guns, or cars, or scissors in case they decide to run? And speaking of running, would Trump have been allowed to run for president?

Furthermore, how would the government differentiate between idiots and “normal” citizens? Some might think that would be the most difficult problem with implementing idiot control. But there is already an indicator available that provides a foolproof method of idiot detection. Just ask them is they watch Fox News.

The Republican (and Fox News) Agenda for 2021: Less Voting, More Guns

Every political party displays their priorities in the initiatives they choose to pursue. And voters get to decide which party is more closely aligned with their vision for the nation. That’s the essence of democracy and the concept of government of, by, and for the people.

Marjorie Taylor Greene, Gun

Today’s Republican Party is doing their part in providing voters with a look at what they hope to achieve were they in the majority. And, as usual, it isn’t a pretty picture, nor one that represents the views of most Americans.

In the wake of yet another horrifying mass shooting, Republicans are once again showing their preferences for a society that permits such atrocities to occur. It’s a preference that is in direct conflict with what the American people want. Every poll shows that common sense gun reforms are popular across a broad spectrum of the electorate. Unfortunately, the GOP’s devotion to guns continues to result in ever more bloodshed. Republicans are telling us loud and clear what they want for America. Most of their agenda is focused on curtailing the rights and privileges of the American people. For instance, Republicans want less…

  • Healthcare. They have been been trying for years to sabotage Obamacare, a program that has gained the support of a majority of the people.
  • Wages. They oppose a living wage of $15.00 an hour, which is popular even among GOP voters.
  • Taxes on the rich. They have repeatedly cut taxes for the wealthiest Americans whose fortunes have increased, while the rest of the nation has struggled.
  • Environmental protection. They are staunchly opposed to advancing green energy and mitigating the climate crisis.
  • Pandemic relief. They lobbied fiercely to reduce the benefits of the recently passed American Rescue Plan, then every one of them voted against it.
  • Voting. Republicans are currently trying to pass more than 200 bills in 40+ states to make it harder to vote.

The one thing that Republicans are fervently in favor of having more of is access to guns and the dangerous ammo clips and accessories that adorn them. It’s a rather ironic contrast that the GOP is for more guns but less voting. However, that’s precisely the mindset that produced the violent Trump Insurrection in Washington. The rioters were pro-gun extremists who were intent on invalidating the votes of millions of citizens.

It’s not surprising that Republicans are so afraid of voters having easy access to the polls. They know that the more people that vote, the harder it will be for Republicans to win. They have said so explicitly. Senate GOP minority leader, Mitch McConnell, has threatened a “scorched earth” response to Democratic efforts to help people vote. Donald Trump told Fox News that it “doesn’t work out well for Republicans.” He went on to complain that Democrats were “crazy” for supporting vote-by-mail, saying that “They had levels of voting, that if you ever agreed to it you’d never have a Republican elected in this country again.”

And of course, Fox News is backing up the GOP’s pro-gun, anti-democracy agenda. They regard easier access to voting as invitations to election fraud, despite a complete lack of any evidence of it. They promote the Republican positions on allowing anyone with a heartbeat to open-carry anywhere they want. They book GOP politicians and pundits to push the NRA’s wish list that includes unhindered access to assault weapons, cop-killer bullets, and the revocation of all regulations, including those that prohibit gun ownership for the violent mentally ill and domestic abusers.

The reason that Republicans are so scared of people voting is that the demographics of the nation are not friendly for them. This is no longer a country that caters to a white supremacist majority. In an op-ed for NBC News Lee Drutman, of the New America think tank, noted that…

“[D]emocracy reform has become a deeply partisan exercise. A Republican president has won the popular vote only once in the last 28 years (2004), and Republican senators have represented a majority of Americans only once in the last 40 years (1996-97). Republicans have increasingly pegged their political future to aggressive partisan gerrymandering and targeted voting restrictions.”

The only way that Republicans have been able to continue winning elections is by cheating. They have drawn bizarrely gerrymandered voting districts. They have passed laws that unfairly burden voters and remove them from the voting rolls. And they benefit from archaic practices like the electoral college and the Senate filibuster. Both of which give political minorities the ability to suppress the will of the majority. It’s why the half million residents of Wyoming have the exact same representation as the 40 million residents of California. That’s hardly democratic.

Significant reforms are urgently needed. The electoral college must be abolished. Senate voting procedures need to be more population-based. Congressional districts must be drawn by independent panels. And statehood must be considered for at least the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. These reforms would begin to guide the nation to a more fair model of self-government, and to restore the promise of a democracy that can truly produce liberty and justice for all.
