Trump’s Deranged Response to Mike Pence Sends the Republican Party Skidding Into Disarray

Former Vice-President Mike Pence managed to crawl out from under his rock to make a bit of news on Friday. He gave a speech to the ultra-rightist Federalist Society during which he made his first feeble foray into finding fault with his former boss, Donald Trump.

Donald Trump, Republican, GOP

Taking a break from his typical Trump-fluffing, Pence ventured into the subject of his role during the January 6th insurrection. That role was solely to carry out the constitutionally mandated certification of the Electoral College votes for president by Congress. But in his remarks to the Federalists, he responded to Trump’s ludicrous assertions that he was empowered to overturn the election. Pence made a surprising departure from the Trump Cult Doctrine that the deadly riots were peaceful protests and Trump’s claim that he could halt the proceedings. Pence said that…

“Trump is wrong. I had no right to overturn the election. The presidency belongs to the American people and the American people alone. And frankly, there is no idea more un-American than the notion that any one person could choose the American president. Under the Constitution I had no right to change the outcome of our election.”

That’s a pretty emphatic repudiation of Trump’s self-serving, nonsensical blathering on the subject. Not that Pence deserves much credit for this unexpected eruption of honesty, considering it took him more than a year to deliver it. Still, calling Trump “wrong” and “un-America” was more than what most Republicans have mustered the courage to do.

Predictably, Trump was perturbed by Pence expressing any opinion that differed from his own. So he lashed out on Twitter (via his Twitter ban defying spokes-shill) to castigate his former number two saying that…

“Just saw Mike Pence’s statement on the fact that he had no right to do anything with respect to the Electoral Vote Count, other than being an automatic conveyor belt for the Old Crow Mitch McConnell to get Biden elected President as quickly as possible. Well, the Vice President’s position is not an automatic conveyor if obvious signs of voter fraud or irregularities exist.”

Trump spat out a twofer there, also snarling about Republican Senate minority leader, Mitch McConnell. It’s puzzling that Trump thinks his infantile characterization of McConnell as an “Old Crow” is some sort of epic burn. First of all, Trump is almost as old as McConnell. And crows are considered to be intelligent and cunning. Trump might have been better off calling him an old turkey. But that’s more descriptive of Trump than McConnell.

More to the point, it’s preposterous that McConnell had any desire to hurry the election of President Biden. McConnell is a rock-ribbed conservative who has been an obstacle to all things Democratic for decades. Undeterred, Trump went on to repeat his ignorant misinterpretation of the law governing the certification process. He still thinks that Pence could have scuttled Biden’s election, and has the delusional impression that he “was right and everyone knows it.” Also, there are no “signs of voter fraud or irregularities,” obvious or otherwise. And everyone but Trump and his sycophants know it.

Ironically, Trump has become the most destructive critic of the Republican Party. He has called for GOP incumbents to be primaried. Particularly those who seek the truth about his role in plotting the insurrection, such as Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger. It is likely that the GOP’s censure of them was at Trump’s behest. That’s evident in the language used, calling out Cheney and Kinzinger for “engag[ing] in a Democrat-led persecution of ordinary citizens who engaged in legitimate political discourse.” That’s what the GOP thinks took place on January 6th when the StormTrumpers violently invaded Congress and injured more than 140 police officers.

Yet somehow, the press reports that Democrats are in disarray because two small-state senators out of fifty have broken an otherwise unified party.

So who will Trump’s Republican Party censure next? Mike Pence? Mitt Romney? George Bush? Mitch McConnell? Lindsey Graham? They are a small but significant contingent of the Party’s most prominent names. However, most of the Party is still supporting Trump. And therefore, they also support violent insurrection and Trump’s “Big Lie” that the election was “rigged” and “stolen” from him. But most of all they must support the sentiment with which Trump closed his anti-Pence tweet, saying that “our Country is going to hell!” Which is just Trump, once again, revealing his own agenda America’s future.

Trump Explains How He Plans to Steal the Next Election in Video Message to Republican Group

Just over a year ago, Donald Trump and his confederates attempted to stage a coup against the United States. The January 6th insurrection resulted in a violent mob invading the Capitol, interfering with the constitutionally mandated duties of Congress, vandalizing the historic seat of America’s government, causing over $30 million in damage, and injuring more than a 140 police officers.

Donald Trump Tyrant Dictator

Ever since that day, Trump has not only denied any responsibility, he has actually bragged that it was a peaceful and patriotic event, that he “loved” the domestic terrorists who stormed the Capitol, and that the “real” insurrection was Election Day, November 3, 2021. What’s more, Trump has signed on to Tucker Carlson’s crackpot conspiracy theory that the riots that Trump denies took place were orchestrated by the FBI.

The gross criminality of the January 6th seditionists was fueled by Trump’s relentless and baseless assertions that the 2020 presidential election was “rigged.” In the year that has transpired he has utterly failed to provide even a shred of evidence to support his claims. But now he is providing evidence of his own efforts to rig future elections.

In a video that Trump produced for a group of Republicans in Pennsylvania, Trump sought to explain why he thinks they should devote more of their resources to campaigns for offices that have jurisdiction over election processes, such Secretaries of State. He said that…

“We have to be a lot sharper the next time when it comes to counting the vote. There’s a famous saying that sometimes the vote counter is more important than the candidate. And we can’t let that ever, ever happen again. They have to get a lot tougher and smarter.”

Trump is openly articulating a plot to take over the administration of elections so that his apparatchiks can meddle with the voting to fraudulently produce the result he wants. It isn’t enough that Republicans have been passing laws in many states that suppress the votes of Democratic leaning citizens. His authoritarian aspirations now demand that the vote counting functions be put into the hands of his fellow fascists.

For the record, the “famous saying” that Trump is referring to is one that is attributed to one of his tyrannical heroes, Joseph Stalin, who has been reported to have said that…

“I consider it completely unimportant who in the Party will vote, or how. But what is extraordinarily important is this—who will count the votes, and how.”

Whether or not Stalin actually said that is irrelevant. Trump’s believes he did and his reference to it is as clear as day. It is completely in line with Trump’s well documented fixation on notorious dictators. While discussing his record on foreign relations during a recent appearance with Bill O’Reilly, Trump admitted his perverse admiration, saying that the world leaders he “got along best with were tyrants. For whatever reason, I got along great with them.” Which shouldn’t surprise anyone given his affinity for, and subservience to, Vladimir Putin.

This video wherein Trump is quoting what he believes to be Stalin’s method of dealing with democracy should alarm every American. Trump is clearly setting up the 2022 midterm elections as a rehearsal for his own attempt to regain power in 2024. And he isn’t the least bit shy about revealing his nefarious intentions. Which makes it all the more critical that Democrats and honest Republicans (if there are any left) to join together to pass the voting rights legislation currently being debated in Congress. American democracy is literally hanging in the balance.

THANKS! Trump Spokesperson Convincingly Explains Why No One Should Vote for Republicans

The volume of disinformation that regularly emanates from Donald Trump and his self-serving, perpetual propaganda machine is unprecedented. Trump himself has been documented to have told more than 30,000 lies during his occupation of the White House. But now his super Pac hack is uncharacteristically telling the truth about the Republican Party.

Donald Trump, Republican, GOP

RELATED: Cowardly Republican Party to Require Their Presidential Candidates to Boycott 2024 Debates

Despite Trump’s record of deceit, every now and again someone in the Trump realm inadvertently allows a morsel of truth to escape into the wild. And on Friday morning the culprit was Trump’s official mouthpiece (and Twitter ban defying spokes-shill), Liz Harrington. In one of her regular appearances on the shamelessly Trump-fluffing One America News Network (OAN), Harrington was fed the softest of balls by OAN’s Natalie Harp (video below):

“The Republican Party isn’t the establishment party anymore. It’s the people’s party. They’re determining the direction of the party in terms of legislation, America First. That’s not what they’re used to. And yet somehow they think that they can point out the Cheneys and the Bushs. Don’t they realize we all rejected that during the primaries in 2016?”

Let’s just set aside the nonsense that the party that gets the most financial and institutional support from corporations and wealthy elites can be portrayed as “the people’s party.” And it is those one-percenters who have always determined the party’s direction. It is, however, notable that Harp admits her inclusion in the Trump Cult saying that WE all ejected that during the primaries in 2016.” But it was Harrington’s response that let the cat out of the hag:

“They [Republicans] all been exposed for the frauds that they are. They’re as fraudulent as the last election. And the people have seen through that and they want the real thing. They don’t want another fake substitute, another fake election where there’s really no difference between the two candidates on the ballot. They might say they are a different party, but the end result, they’re not the same. The Cheneys of the world, the Pelosis of the world, the McConnells, they all want endless wars. They all want open borders. They all want bad trade deals for the United States. They do not care about our sovereignty. They do not care about our jobs. And they can pretend to care about issues of the day.”

And there you have it. Directly from the horse’s mouth. Trump’s tweet-meister reveals that the Republican Party is full of warmongering, immigrant-bashing, economy-destroying “frauds.” Democrats and most rational Americans have known that for years (decades?). But it’s good to hear them confess their corruption publicly.

Trump himself has emerged as the most anti-Republican Republican in the party’s history. His hostility toward leaders of the Party such as Mitch McConnell, whom he now calls the “broken old crow,” is typical of his lust for vengeance against anyone showing signs of dwindling devotion. Trump has even demanded that his cult disciples refrain from donating to the GOP, and place their offerings on his plate instead. “No more money for RINOS,” Trump decreed, “Send your donation to [his] Save America PAC.”

This might seem like good news for Democrats. With Trump bashing the GOP and trying to intercept their donations, it should benefit Democratic candidates in the upcoming midterm elections. And it probably will, to a degree. However, Trump’s influence appears to be waning within the Republican world. The most recent party financial disclosure shows that the GOP raised $140 million in 2021. Which is still less than the $146 million Democrats raised. But it shows that GOP donors aren’t heeding Trump’s order to send their funds to him.

RELATED: Trump Orders His Cult To ‘Drop Off of Twitter’ and Calls For It To Be Outlawed

You know Trump’s gotta hate the fact that people are ignoring his orders. Perhaps that’s why he dispatched Harrington to OAN to throw more mud at his fellow Republicans. Because, in the end, all Trump cares about is how much money and adoration he can collect from his dimwitted followers. The more he sees those measures decline, the more panicked and incoherent he will become. And by that standard, he is already pretty far gone.

Cowardly Republican Party to Require Their Presidential Candidates to Boycott 2024 Debates

With the 2024 presidential election still nearly three years away, the Republican Party is already showing signs that they are afraid of engaging in a free and open discourse with their Democratic opponent. Never mind that they have spent two years maligning President Biden as “sleepy” and mentally unfit, it is the GOP that appears to be concerned about their own candidate’s ability to face off in an open forum.

Donald Trump

The fear exhibited by the Republican Party is well warranted considering that their leading candidate is Donald Trump. For the past year Trump has been obsessively fixated on his having suffered a humiliating loss to Biden in 2020. It’s the only thing he talks about, despite having failed for more than a year – and sixty court cases – to provide a shred of evidence of his claims that the election was “rigged.” It is what fueled his deadly January 6th insurrection. And he is still twisting reality to insist that the “real insurrection” was on Election Day, November 3rd, 2020.

Consequently, the Republican National Committee (RNC) has announced that they intend to prohibit their Party’s candidate in 2024 from participating in the presidential debates that have been hosted for three decades by the bipartisan Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD). The RNC sent a letter to the Commission stating that…

“[T]he RNC will initiate the process of amending the Rules of the Republican Party at our upcoming Winter Meeting to prohibit future Republican nominees from participating in CPD-sponsored debates.”

Make no mistake about it. This is not a quarrel over some rationally disputed format differences. The RNC’s “reforms” are all driven by complaints that crybaby Trump made in 2020 due to his cognitive inadequacies and inability to engage in a substantive dialogue. He proved that during the debates when he couldn’t refrain from interrupting and had to be told by Biden to “Shut up, man.”

The Republican National Committee is obviously scared, so they’re issuing ludicrous ultimatums if they don’t get their way. But the RNC’s proposals are intrusive and one-sided. They would impose on the neutrality of the Commission by impacting the composition of its members, dictating the dates of the debates, intervening in the selection of debate moderators, and enacting punishments for violations of the terms that the RNC is insisting on.

Clearly the RNC is doing this on Trump’s behalf. No other candidate has objected to the CPD’s rules or fairness for thirty years. But the RNC is worried that without these reforms Trump would likely embarrass himself again, and he and the RNC know that. He has demonstrated that he cannot face any encounter that isn’t rigged to his advantage. It’s why he won’t submit to any interviews that aren’t conducted by his pals at Fox News or other similarly servile sycophants. He is mortally afraid of being challenged.

Trump recently canceled a phony “news” conference that he planned to hold on the anniversary of the January 6th insurrection. He also chickened out of his own challenge to debate any takers on his bogus claims about the 2020 election. And now he is directing his Republican Party apparatchiks to protect him from having to engage in an open and fair debate. It’s the coward’s way and, therefore, Trump’s way.

GOP Pipsqueak Madison Cawthorn Imagines that Rhodes Scholar Rachel Maddow is Afraid to Debate Him

There is an epic battle brewing on the InterTubes between a freshman Republican congressman and a seasoned political broadcaster that threatens to leave one of them in shreds. Were this a title match in professional boxing the bout would be called off by the refs to prevent a mauling.

Rachel Maddow

Republican Rep. Madison Cawthorn took the ill-advised step of taunting MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow after receiving an errant email that he totally misinterpreted. The email was sent by a producer for the The Rachel Maddow Show to an NBC News colleague, but was mistakenly cc’ed to Cawthorn. The producer asked the colleague to contact Cawthorn’s office for a comment because s/he was…

“…a little worried that if we did inquire he might ask to come on and explain. I know that is HIGHLY doubtful, but don’t want to take that risk.”

Copying Cawthorn’s office on this email was an unfortunate mistake. But Cawthorn’s conclusions as to its meaning are hysterically misconstrued. He, and much of the right-wing Twitterverse, have taken it to mean that Maddow is afraid to debate him.

Seriously? Cawthorn is a first-term representative from North Carolina. He was a D student in college until he dropped out. And he now encourages others to also quit because he says that schools are a scam.

Maddow, on the other hand, is a Rhodes Scholar and an experienced political analyst and communicator. Any intellectual contest between them would be a blood bath for little Madison. But that appears to be what he’s yearning for, based on this tweet…

The subject of the proposed debate would be a challenge just filed by a group of North Carolina voters asserting that Cawthorn should be disqualified from running due to the constitutional prohibition of candidates who have engaged in insurrection against the United States. Cawthorn’s speech at Donald Trump’s January 6th rally that preceded the insurrection at the Capitol, as well as his baseless and anti-democratic objections to the 2020 presidential election, form the basis for the legal challenge.

Cawthorn told Fox News that…

“Fake news MSNBC doesn’t want to ‘take the risk’ that I’ll come on their show and trigger the left with my America First message and burst their woke dystopian bubble.

The only thing that the left would be “triggered” to is uncontrollable laughter. Cawthorn demonstrates his cognitive deficiencies in that statement by regurgitating tedious wingnut slogans about “fake news” and “woke dystopian bubbles” (whatever the hell that is).

Cawthorn’s belief that Maddow is afraid to debate could land him in a torrent of trouble. First of all, it wasn’t Maddow who said anything about a “risk” of having Cawthorn on her program. It was a producer who was likely more concerned about booking a known liar who contributed to inciting the riots in Washington, D.C.

For her part, Maddow probably wouldn’t want to waste airtime on this mental munchkin. But if she did she’d have no trouble disposing of him. And it would almost be worth the “risk” of sitting through a televised slaughter to watch her do it.

HUH? McCarthy Accuses Democrats of Politicizing Trump’s January 6th Political Insurrection

The perversion of rational thought from within the ranks of the Republican Party is one of the most disturbing developments arising from the Dystopian Era of Trump. It’s bad enough that America has to endure the rancid, imbecilic incoherence of Donald Trump himself, but his impact on the party that he leads just makes matters so much worse.

Donald Trump, Kevin McCarthy

On Sunday morning, the Republican minority leader in the House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy, provided an unsettling illustration of the descent of the GOP borg-mind into fantastical delusion. McCarthy was “interviewed” by Fox News Senior Trump-Fluffer, Maria Bartiromo. And during this episode of programmed propaganda, McCarthy sought to blame Democrats for “politicizing” the Trump-incited riots. He said that…

“You watched what they did last week while we were out, trying to politicize January 6th. And everybody believes that what happened on January 6th was wrong beyond wrong. But as just you showed that clip, Speaker Pelosi, and some are doing the research, using ‘Hamilton,’ a fundraiser they say, that was used back in October 2020 for ActBlue.”

Wow. Just WOW! McCarthy is SHOCKED that a politically motivated attack on a political institution directed against politicians in order to overturn a politically contentious election is viewed as being political. How the heck could that happen? You don’t suppose it was because McCarthy and the GOP were “trying to politicize January 6th.”

Perhaps McCarthy provided the answer to his own befuddlement in his brief diatribe. After all, he began by noting that “last week while we were out” the events memorializing the deadly insurrection last year were attended only by Democrats. McCarthy’s party, at his direction, made the patently political choice to snub the solemn observances of the day.

Further tainting the affair with blatant partisanship, McCarthy falsely stated that “everybody believes that what happened on January 6th was wrong beyond wrong.” However, polls show that a majority of gullible Republicans believe that the insurrection was a patriotic defense of freedom. And Trump himself has been denying for months that anything wrong happened that day (See also Tucker Carlson). In Trump’s view the criminal mob was comprised of peaceful protestors, and it was the American people who voted on Election Day, November 3, 2021, who were the “real” insurrections.

McCarthy went on to make a glaringly political attack on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for something he didn’t quite manage to articulate. That was followed by his whining that Democrats held a fundraiser in October of 2020, that had nothing to do with the insurrection that took place three months later.

There is no one in the Republican Party who is more political than McCarthy. Remember, he’s the guy who originally criticized Trump for failing to call off his insurrectionists in the hours after the riots occurred. On the House floor McCarthy said that…

“The president bears responsibility for Wednesday’s attack on Congress by mob rioters. He should have immediately denounced the mob when he saw what was unfolding.”

Not only did Trump not denounce the mob, according to his communications director, Stephanie Grisham, he watched it repeatedly on TV while it went down. Afterwards Trump told the rioters that he loved them. And shortly after that McCarthy made the pilgrimage to Mar-a-Lago to kiss Dear Leader’s… let’s just say ring. There surely was nothing political about that, was there?

Pro-COVID Pervert Jim Jordan and His GOP Judiciary Jackasses Throw Toxic Twitter Tantrum

There are many reasons to dread the horror of Republicans taking over the majority in Congress in 2022. Not only would they advance their wet dream of an authoritarian dictatorship headed by Donald Trump, they would pursue impeachment proceedings against President Joe Biden, which they have already proposed.

Jim Jordan

What’s more, a newly empowered GOP majority would stomp their boot heels down on the progress made by Democrats on the economy, and the fight against the COVID pandemic. And their most deranged fringe dwellers would assume positions of power.

Leading the crusade of the crazies would be Rep. Jim Jordan who, despite allegations of condoning the sexual abuse of students when he was a wrestling coach, stands to become the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee in a Republican Congress. That’s a post that would put him in charge of any investigations into the Biden administration, including impeachment.

The ignorant and irresponsible brand of leadership that Jordan would provide was illustrated on Thursday with a pair tweets mocking the proven efficacy of vaccinations and face masks to mitigate the harm of the coronavirus. In one posted by the official account of the JudiciaryGOP (for which he is the ranking member), the message was a terse “If the booster shots work, why don’t they work?”

That tweet was deleted for some reason (though preserved here). Perhaps because it was blatant disinformation that could result in untold fatalities. The facts are not in dispute. As Jeff Sites (Jordan’s Democratic opponent) pointed out in response to Jordan, there were 6.1 deaths per 100,000 among the unvaccinated, 0.5 deaths among the vaccinated, and only 0.1 deaths among the boosted.

The second tweet was posted by Jordan himself. It struck a similar theme asking “If masks and mandates work, why don’t they work?” Jordan retweeted a chart that showed the recent spike in COVID cases reported due to the Omicron variant. What he neglected to mention was that nearly all of the new cases were people who were not vaccinated. And the vast majority of the unvaccinated are Republicans and Fox News viewers. In fact, studies show that Trump supporters and Fox News viewers are the most likely to believe the sort of dangerously bogus disinformation that Jordan is spewing here.

So Jordan is wrong on both counts. Boosters do work, and they keep people from suffering severe illness should they have a breakthrough infection. Masks and mandates also work, and they prevent the virus from spreading among those who employ them. It’s the dimwits who listen to Fox News and Trump and Jim Jordan who are getting sick and dying. And Jordan’s tweets appear to be intended to make matters even worse for those deluded souls.

PolitiFact’s Lie of the Year: The January 6th Insurrection Disinformation By Trump and Fox News

Eleven months ago a mob of anti-American, democracy hating subversives stormed the United States Congress with the intention of overturning the will of the people who voted in the 2020 presidential election. They were fueled by the flagrant falsehoods and inflammatory rhetoric of Donald Trump, the Republican Party, and their Ministry of Propaganda, Fox News.

Donald Trump, Fox News, Lies

What occurred on January 6th, 2021, was a violent insurrection against America and its Constitution. The participants were the forward flank of an attempted coup by authoritarian forces led by Trump and his treasonous confederates. Now, nearly a year later, the lies and treachery have been documented by communications between Republican conspirators, boastful confessions by right-wing defectors, and hundreds of hours of contemporaneous video.

Fittingly, PolitiFact has announced that they have chosen Lies About the Capitol insurrection as their annual “Lie of the Year.” The justifications supporting their decision were detailed in a lengthy article that included numerous references to those most responsible for the torrent of blatant and dangerous dishonesty. Not surprisingly, that turned out to be Donald Trump and Fox News hosts such as Sean Hannity, Laura Ingraham, and Tucker Carlson. In fact, Trump is a multi-year recipient of the dishonor. PolitiFact’s assessment noted that “In the days that followed” the insurrection, Trump, the GOP, and Fox News, among others, “offered a deluge of justifications, excuses and conspiracy theories,” such as…

  • They said Jan. 6 was instigated by undercover left-wing activists who were part of antifa. That was proved false.
  • They said the rioters hadn’t used force and one Republican congressman likened the events to “a normal tourist visit.” Video proved that wrong.
  • They claimed the attack on the Capitol had nothing to do with race, even though white supremacists and far-right militia groups were among the most active participants, and many rioters wore racist t-shirts.
  • They suggested the whole affair was staged by the government, a false flag operation. Others suggested it was entirely a peaceful protest. All of that was wrong.
  • They said that the rioters were political prisoners and shouldn’t face serious charges. A host of federal judges and courts have held otherwise.

Among the most heinous misrepresentations of reality were Trump’s ludicrous claim that Right from the start it was zero threat.” And then there was Tucker Carlson’s lie-riddled crocumentary “Patriot Purge,” that preposterously asserted that the insurrection was a “false flag” operation orchestrated by the FBI and other agents of the “Deep State.”

In addition to the tribute conferred on the insurrection liars by PolitiFact, they also had a “Lie of the Year” readers poll wherein a huge majority (75%) voted for Trump’s claim that he won the 2020 presidential election. Which is, of course, related to the lies about the insurrection because it was Trump’s “Big Lie” that the election was “rigged” and “stolen” from him that triggered the assault on Congress.

PolitiFact could just have easily chosen the lies that Trump won the election, or the lies about the COVID vaccine either not working or causing harm, for their “Lie of the Year.” Both of which are also attributable to deliberate dishonesty by Trump and Fox News. But PolitiFact chose the insurrection lies because “the attack was historically important,” and because “the events of Jan. 6 were widely broadcast…So efforts to downplay and deny what happened are an attempt to brazenly recast reality itself.”

In other words, Trump, Fox News, and the other liars were so despicable that they tried to pretend that the worst attack on the U.S. Capitol since the War of 1812 didn’t happen. And they were so shameless that they tried to convince people not to believe their own eyes. Of course, that has been the modus operandi of Trump and Fox News all along. But what is truly disheartening is that, despite the abundant evidence, there is still a small but worrisome contingent of willfully ignorant believers.

GOP Senator Projects His Own Anti-Americanism Onto Biden and Democrats in Rancid Fox News Rant

Taking its cues from Nazi propagandists, the Republican Party has become skilled in the dark art of projection as a key method of manipulating their mindless minions. It’s a tactic wherein they accuse others of the unsavory practices in which they themselves are engaging.

Fox News, Constitution

This behavior was evident in the remarks by GOP insurrection supporter, Sen. Josh Hawley (MO-QAnon), during Thursday night’s episode of the Laura Ingraham Inquisition on Fox News. The segment was wholly devoted to disparaging President Biden’s opening speech at the virtual Summit For Democracy that he hosted. Hawley, a committed opponent of democracy, projected his brand of divisive anti-Americanism on Biden in a typically baseless harangue:

“What really stands out to me is that it was one long, anti-American tirade made by the President of the United States and various members of his administration. I mean, you listen to them, they don’t like American voting laws. They don’t like American history. They want to rewrite our culture and completely change it. I mean, this is a guy who doesn’t really like America.”

It’s hard to take seriously a criticism that is so slathered in hypocrisy. After all, it is Hawley’s Republican Party that is attacking and corrupting voting laws across the country, with 19 states (so far) enacting laws that make it harder to vote. It is Hawley’s party that is suppressing history by banning the teaching of critical race theory and slavery. And no party is more obsessed with dictating culture than Hawley’s GOP, led by the King of Cancel Culture and Republican Godfather, Donald Trump. And they want to talk about guys that “don’t like America?”

What was it about Biden’s speech, you might wonder, that has so enraged Hawley and his Fox News hostess? Could it have been Biden’s determination to fight to “shore up the very foundation of American democracy: the sacred right of every person to make their voice heard through free, fair, and secure elections.” Or might it have been his intention to work to “hold corrupt actors accountable, reduce their ability to use the United States and international financial systems to hide assets and to launder money.”

Those are both the sort of ideals that make Republicans shiver with fear. However Hawley and Ingraham might also have been spooked by Biden’s aspirations for a world that values cooperation and the rights of everyone:

Yes, democracy is hard. We all know that. It works best with consensus and cooperation. When people and parties that might have opposing views sit down and find ways to work together, things begin to work. […] We have to stand for justice and the rule of law, for free speech, free assembly, a free press, freedom of religion, and for all the inherent human rights of every individual.”

It’s easy to see why Hawley was so outraged and why Fox News would provide him a platform to vent his wrath. Biden’s words extolling freedom and equal rights are anathema to Republican principles, or lack thereof. Just as the notion of free and fair elections scare the GOP, knowing as they do that the more people who vote, the more Democrats win. Trump actually said so out loud.

That’s why we are now seeing this pushback from the right to accuse Democrats of being anti-voting, history, etc. It’s all they have left. Never mind that they don’t even bother to produce an example of what they are alleging. Examples are for ethical persons with rational positions. So that leaves out Republicans on both counts.

QAnon Rep Marjorie Taylor Greene Gets Nasty Phone Calls, Blames Nancy Pelosi and the Press

Ever since Donald Trump descended his golden escalator to announce his political coming out, the unfettered expressions of hate and hostility in America grew exponentially. Trump was – and is – a malice machine that generates pure and personal loathing for what were once merely policy differences, even when delivered with passion.

Marjorie Taylor Greene, QAnon

The result has been all too frequent outbursts of venomous rancor aimed at the people’s representatives. There is something terribly wrong when public servants have their lives threatened simply for doing their jobs and serving their constituents. The death threats aimed at Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar exemplify this ominous trend. And this pattern of menacing misbehavior reached a pinnacle when Trump’s rabid supporters stormed Congress on January 6th, threatening to kill the Speaker of the House and hang the vice president.

The unholy wars waged by Republican StormTrumpers has taken another disturbing turn. Recently Rep. Omar played a recording of a death threat she received. In response Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (GA-QAnon) has released her own version of alleged threats against her. In a video that she posted on Twitter, Greene rightfully said that “It is completely wrong for any member of Congress to receive death threats.” But then, as if to make a contest of it, she identified herself as “the most attacked freshman member of Congress probably in United States history.”

Greene’s tirade blamed the threatening calls on the media that she said defamed her. “They have smeared my character,” she complained, “called me names, and labeled me horrible things, none of which I am.” And before playing a few recordings of the phone calls she claimed she received, Greene again pointed her accusatory finger at the media for “teach[ing] people to hate us, members of Congress.” She closed by adding other culprits to those she deemed responsible for the threats against her:

“This is all the fault of the media and the January 6th Commission. Nancy Pelosi, the Democrats, Adam Kinzinger, Liz Cheney, all playing a part trying to paint Republicans and president Trump as if we caused any violence on Capitol Hill on January 6th. None of us did that. […] this is what happens when the media constantly creates members of Congress as villains and monsters, which we are not. This has to stop. The press has the freedom of press, but it does not have the freedom to lie. And it does not have the right to teach people to hate like this.”

The first thing that needs to be acknowledged is that Greene is a notorious liar and these alleged threats could be – let’s say trumped up. But even if they are legit, Greene is casting blame in a manner that is irresponsible and downright bizarre. She doesn’t provide a single example of any remarks by the media that could credibly incite death threats. The same is true of her baseless accusations against Pelosi and the bipartisan House Select Committee investigating the January 6th insurrection. The truth is that Greene is just mad that the press reports what she actually does and says. Which is true for Trump and the rest of the GOP as well.

On the other hand, Greene herself has engaged in the sort of gruesome rhetoric that can produce death threats. She recently said that Pelosi’s advocacy of face masks in Congress was “exactly the type of abuse” as Nazis sending Jews to gas chambers during the holocaust. Greene has even invited attacks on her GOP confederates who had the audacity to vote for Biden’s infrastructure bill. She maligned them as “traitors” five times in this Twitter thread.

It’s not coincidental that Greene just happens to have some recordings to air so soon after Rep. Omar aired hers. But Greene’s added commentary only exacerbates the problem that she purports to be addressing. She is instigating further violence against the media, Pelosi, and Republicans that she deems insufficiently loyal to the Cult of Trump. It is a transparent attempt to deflect from the very real abuses suffered by both Democrats and Republicans who have run afoul of Trump and the QAnon flank of the GOP. And Greene knows this because she is among the top offenders.
