WATCH: OAN Concedes that ‘There Was No Widespread Voter Fraud’ to Settle Defamation Lawsuit

For more than a year and a half the crusade to keep Donald Trump’s cult convinced that the 2020 election was “rigged” has been supported by right-wing media outlets including Fox News, Newsmax and One America News Network (OAN). Their flagrant dishonesty resulted in the deadly insurrection in Washington, D.C. by brainwashed Trump disciples intent on preventing President Biden’s victory from being certified and undermining democracy.

Donald Trump, OAN

Another result of the conservative press disseminating blatant lies about election fraud was the filing of billion dollar lawsuits against them by voting systems companies:

Dominion sued Fox News for $1.6 billion.
Smartmatic sued Fox News for $2.7 billion, and later…
Added Newsmax and OAN to the lawsuit.

In addition to these lawsuits, OAN was sued by two election workers in Georgia who the network (and Rudy Giuliani) asserted had engaged in criminal misconduct while counting votes. There was never any evidence to support the charges and the network knew it. Which is why they recently settled with the election workers. And now they have aired a concession that their “reporting” was untrue. OAN admitted that…

“Georgia officials have concluded that there was no widespread voter fraud by election workers who counted ballots at the State Farm Arena in November of 2020. The results of this investigation indicate that Ruby Freeman and Wandrea ‘Shaye’ Moss did not engage in ballot fraud or criminal misconduct while working at State Farm Arena on election night. A legal matter with this network and the two election workers has been resolved to the mutual satisfaction of the parties through a fair and reasonable settlement.”

For the record, Georgia officials concluded that “there was no widespread voter fraud” a year and a half ago. It was OAN who continued to peddle lies about it until faced with this lawsuit. And their falsehoods fueled Trump’s “Big Lie” the election was “stolen,” wherein he had even cited the falsely accused election workers by name at his cult rallies.

This admission of “fake news” by OAN only relates to the incidents in Georgia. However, the network is still on the hook for broader allegations of defamation in the other lawsuits and they have altered their editorial stance on election fraud. In fear of further litigation, they placed a disclaimer on the air prior to a crocumentary by MyPillow’s Mike Lindell, disavowing any connection to it or its preposterous assertions. It’s title, “Absolute Proof” had the conspicuous flaw of containing no proof whatsoever. Not unlike the crocumentary by convicted election fraudster, Dinesh D’Souza.

OAN is going to have considerably more trouble arriving at a settlements with Smartmatic and Dominion. Their slander was more than just defamatory. It caused substantial financial and reputational harm. But OAN’s future is already in doubt since they were dumped by their biggest distributer, DirecTV.

Trump Freaks Out Over Cable Companies Dropping the Failing One America News Network (OAN)

Never let it be said that Donald Trump doesn’t know where his priorities lie. While the rest of the civilized world is consumed by the heinous war crimes being committed by Trump’s BFF Vladimir Putin against the innocent people of Ukraine, Trump is busting his prodigious gut over the dire prospects for his favorite disinformation and Russian propaganda disseminator, One America News Network (OAN).

Trump TV

In a tweet posted by his Twitter ban defying spokes-shill, Trump unleashed a totally delusional diatribe against cable companies that he said were “terminating a very popular and wonderful news network (OAN).” His extended, run-on rant whined that…

“Time Warner, the owner of Fake News CNN, has just announced that they will be terminating a very popular and wonderful news network (OAN). Between heavily indebted Time Warner, and Radical Left Comcast, which runs Xfinity, there is a virtual monopoly on news, thereby making what you hear from the LameStream Media largely FAKE, hence the name FAKE NEWS! I believe the people of this Country should protest the decision to eliminate OAN, a very important voice. Likewise, Comcast is terrible and expensive. Let them know that you’re sick and tired of FAKE NEWS! In this modern age of technology, they are no longer necessary. Demand that OAN be allowed to stay on the air. It is far bigger and more popular than anyone knows, and importantly, it represents the voice of a very large group of people!”

Holy Shih Tzu! There is a lot of crazy to unwrap there. Let’s begin with the fact that there is no such thing as “Time Warner.” It ceased to exist in 2016 when it was acquired by Charter Communications and folded into Spectrum. Furthermore, the former cable company Time Warner (now Spectrum) was not the owner of CNN. That’s WarnerMedia, which was just acquired by Discovery Networks. So Trump is, as usual, pitifully ignorant of the business he is raging against.

Trump goes on to claim that OAN is “a very popular and wonderful news network [and] is far bigger and more popular than anyone knows.” Really? If no one knows how popular it is, than it is, by definition, unpopular. OAN’s audience is actually so small that it isn’t even tracked by Nielsen.

Moving on, how can Trump say that there is a “virtual monopoly on news” when Fox News is the highest rated cable news network? And what about right-wing outlets like Newsmax, Sinclair, and News Nation? Trump’s tedious wailing about “fake” news is just his description of any news with which he disagrees. If the fake label belongs anywhere, it is with OAN and Fox, where facts have been discarded in favor of propaganda.

What’s more, you have to wonder why Trump is so outraged over the loss of OAN as a part of the “LameStream Media” when he says in the same statement that “they are no longer necessary.” If that’s true, then why should anyone bother to take Trump’s advice to protest the decision and “demand that OAN be allowed to stay on the air”? Someone should tell Trump that OAN is already “allowed” to be on the air. They just need to offer a product that justifies its carriage financially. Under free market capitalism, which Republicans used to pretend to advocate, cable companies are also allowed to make business decisions as to which channels they carry.

Finally, this entire episode of Trump’s Daily Tantrum was totally contrived in his diseased brain. OAN has not been carried on Charter (Spectrum) or Comcast for years. It’s puzzling what triggered this outburst because there isn’t any news on this subject except for a report that OAN has filed a wholly meritless lawsuit to contest DirecTV’s decision not to renew their contract.

Perhaps OAN hopes to recoup some what they expect lose in the lawsuits pending against them. OAN is currently being sued by Dominion Voting Systems and Smartmatic software for propagating Trump’s lies about election fraud. Separately, they are being sued by two former Georgia election workers who are victims of Trump’s election deceptions that were prominently pushed by OAN.

Trump, meanwhile, is behaving in his typically deranged and utterly hypocritical manner. The rabid “cancel culture” critic has been bellowing for boycotts of DirecTV and other media companies that aren’t sufficiently worshipful. He’s been similarly barking at social media platforms, many of which have banned him for concocting and spreading dangerous lies. Perhaps he thinks people will just switch to his own Twitter rip off. But given the disastrous launch of Trump’s hysterically named TRUTH Social, that isn’t likely to happen either. SAD!

King of Cancel Culture: Trump Urges Boycott of DirecTV (AT&T) in Retaliation for Dropping OAN

Just in case anyone needed a reminder of the flaming hypocrisy of Donald Trump and his Republican flunkies, Trump himself provided an excellent one. In a tweet posted by his Twitter ban defying spokes-shill, Trump lashed out DirecTV and AT&T for dropping the ultra-rightist propaganda promoters, One America News Network (OAN).

Donald Trump, Boycott

OAN’s future is in doubt because DirecTV was the source of most of their revenue and audience. But even though AT&T (who spun off DirecTV last year, but remains the majority stockholder) bankrolled OAN’s birth, that relationship has become financially precarious. OAN is currently being sued by Dominion Voting Systems and Smartmatic software for propagating Trump’s lies about election fraud. Separately, they are being sued by two former Georgia election workers who are victims of Trump’s election deceptions that were prominently pushed by OAN.

However, none of this is news right now. It was all reported two weeks ago on News Corpse. But Trump was likely triggered anew because he held another of his cult rallies in Texas on Saturday. That event was properly ignored by credible news outlets (and also Fox News) because it was just more of his paranoid and wrathful ranting. It was, however carried by OAN and Newsmax, two very low rated channels. Consequently, Trump is perturbed that his pitiful pontificating was passed over by the press. So he sobbed that…

“AT&T is closing the very popular One America News Network (OAN) because too many people are watching. They couldn’t put up with that any longer. Conservatives/Republicans should boycott Direct TV, and while you’re at it, “Concast’s” Xfinity as well. These are Radical Left Lunatics who are destroying our Nation!”

There is so much wrong embedded in that whine. First of all, AT&T is not “closing” OAN. The network just lost a distributor, albeit an important one. And since AT&T spun off DirecTV, they have nothing to do with with programming decisions anyway. Secondly, OAN is not “very popular.” Their audience is so small that Nielsen doesn’t even track it. Thirdly, it is profoundly deranged to assert that mega-corporations like AT&T and Comcast are “Radical Left Lunatics who are destroying our Nation.”

Finally, Trump’s call for a boycott is just the sort of “cancel culture” crapola that he and the rabid right routinely rail against. Never mind that Trump himself is the undisputed King of Cancel Culture. But despite that title, he is also notoriously ineffectual. He has called for a boycott of AT&T in the past, without any discernible impact. The same goes for his unheeded decree to quit Twitter.

Apparently, no one appears to be paying any attention to Trump’s bitchy boycott bulletins. And none of his targets have suffered in the slightest. It’s almost as if a Trump boycott serves as compelling advertising for sane consumers. So keep it up, Donnie. Pretty soon all the big corporations will want the success guaranteed by a Trump boycott.

UPDATE 2/8/2022: Trump dropped another demand to boycott AT&T/DirecTV saying falsely that OAN “is a very popular channel, far more popular than most would understand,” and that “If you feel infringed by what this Communist movement is doing, cancel DirecTV.” He’s too funny 😉

Poor Baby: Trump Throws Tantrum at Rally Over DirecTV Dropping OAN, His Favorite Propaganda Channel

This week Donald Trump’s ultra-rightist media echo chamber suffered a crushing blow. One America News Network was informed by DirecTV that its contract would not be renewed when it expires in April. That is a devastating development because DirecTV is OAN’s biggest source of both audience and revenue.

Donald Trump, Snowflakes

There is considerable cause to believe that OAN cannot survive without DirecTV’s patronage. The channel would not have even existed but for DirecTV’s former parent corporation AT&T bankrolling the shameless Trump-fluffers at OAN.

However, as time went on, maintaining a relationship with the struggling network has become more of a financial risk than benefit. OAN is currently being sued by Dominion Voting Systems and Smartmatic software for propagating Trump’s lies about election fraud. Separately, they are being sued by two former Georgia election workers who are victims of Trump’s election deceptions that were prominently pushed by OAN.

It was inevitable that Trump would feel compelled to wax hysterical about the OAN debacle. After all, it is the TV home of his official spokes-shill, Liz Harrington, who makes nearly daily appearances, like this one. So the day after the DirecTV announcement, Trump took the opportunity to lash out at his cult rally in Arizona, praising OAN and confessing that “I watch it all the time,” and laughably that “You really get the truth.” Plus, it’s cute that this slobbering endorsement of OAN is being aired by Newsmax, as can be seen in the video below:

“All I can tell you is that the people that are telling the truth in America, like One America News (OAN), are being threatened. Does everybody like One America? I love One America. By the way, these cameras, you know they’re back there, they’re covering this, they don’t like hearing this stuff. Do you see the red lights? They go off one after another as soon as I’s gonna mention CNN and how bad their ratings are. You see the CNN camera go off.”

Trump’s fairy tale about camera lights going off is one of his standard lines at these rallies. And of course, it is utterly fictional. But his gushing affinity for OAN is the real thing. There is nothing that Trump likes better than moon-eyed TV hacks drenching him with adoration. But he was just getting started. He continued:

“But you know what? One America News has done a great job. And here’s the story, what just happened. The woke executives, I don’t know what the hell they’re doing. They have so much debt. AT&T is a company that is in serious trouble. And they need AT&T, and AT&T is saying that they may no longer agree to carry this network that’s doing very well. You know why? Because people told them not to do it. So maybe what we should do is not use AT&T.”

Trump’s goto insult against any enterprise that he dislikes is that they are failing, no matter how successful they are. Conversely, he builds up those he favors, such as his saying here that OAN is “doing very well.” They aren’t, and never have been. However, Trump is, once again, demonstrating his ignorance by attacking AT&T, which no longer owns DirecTV. Consequently, AT&T had nothing to do with DirecTV’s decision to cut ties with OAN.

Nevertheless, Trump is urging his cult disciples to boycott AT&T. Although he goes about it in a typically bizarre, Trumpian manner wherein he rants that “I’m not gonna use the word ‘boycott.’ I will not say ‘Boycott AT&T,'” in his passively aggressive voice that clearly indicates his desire to provoke a boycott.

The good news is that Trump is an increasingly impotent character who can’t even influence the behavior of his most devoted and glassy-eyed fans. He has called for a boycott of AT&T in the past, without any discernible impact. The same goes for his unheeded decree to quit Twitter. He is, in fact, the undisputed King of Cancel Culture, attempting to incite boycotts against numerous other companies that he has deemed enemies. The only problem for him is that no one appears to be listening, and none of his targets have suffered in the slightest. So sad!

Trump’s Favorite Propaganda Peddler, One America News (OAN), Gets Dumped By DirecTV (AT&T)

The right-wing media landscape has long been dominated by Fox News. But in the Era of the Trump Cult a couple of wannabe “news” manglers have popped up to challenge the King of the Shill. And one of those challengers just got chit-canned by their founder and biggest financial supporter.

Donald Trump, OAN

DirecTV has announced that they will cease to carry One American News Network (OAN) in their channel offerings. That’s a profoundly significant development considering how OAN came to be. DirecTV’s majority owner, AT&T, was recently exposed as having bankrolled the ultra-rightist outlet. As reported last October…

“A Reuters review of court records shows the role AT&T played in creating and funding OAN, a network that continues to spread conspiracy theories about the 2020 election and the COVID-19 pandemic. […]

“AT&T has been a crucial source of funds flowing into OAN, providing tens of millions of dollars in revenue, court records show. Ninety percent of OAN’s revenue came from a contract with AT&T-owned television platforms, including satellite broadcaster DirecTV.”

With the loss of AT&T’s backing it is questionable as to whether OAN has the resources to continue as a viable operation. They are attempting to transition to streaming platforms, but persuading people to pay for their shameless, Trump-fluffing programming may prove to be an unattainable goal.

The futility of that effort isn’t mitigated by the support OAN gets from Donald Trump, where his official spokes-shill, Liz Harrington, is a regular guest. It will be fun to see how Trump reacts to this news. Expect to see some fireworks from the perpetually pissed off ex-prez. Not that it will do any good. [UPDATE: Right on cue, Trump threw a tantrum the next day at his rally in Arizona]

Despite months of Trump hyping OAN – and simultaneously bashing Fox News – OAN has not budged from their position at the bottom of the heap. Their audience is too low for Nielsen to measure. And losing millions of potential DirecTV viewers isn’t going to help.

The cancelation by DirecTV isn’t the only problem that OAN is facing. They are currently being sued by Dominion Voting Systems and Smartmatic software for disseminating Trump’s lies about election fraud. Separately, they are being sued by two former Georgia election workers who are victims of Trump’s election deceptions that were prominently pushed by OAN.

It is long past time that OAN pay a price for their plague of poisonous propaganda. How can any television service distribute a channel that has actually advocated mass executions for “tens of thousands” of people who the network delusionally claimed were trying “to carry out a coup against the [Trump] presidency” because they didn’t buy into Trump’s election fraud lies?

And that goes for Verizon FIOS, that still carries OAN, and any streaming service that is considering doing so. It is simply irresponsible to propagate such transparently false and dangerous programming. Hopefully the pending litigation will cause some of these companies to reconsider their relationship with OAN. And Newsmax and Fox News while they’re at it.

THANKS! Trump Spokesperson Convincingly Explains Why No One Should Vote for Republicans

The volume of disinformation that regularly emanates from Donald Trump and his self-serving, perpetual propaganda machine is unprecedented. Trump himself has been documented to have told more than 30,000 lies during his occupation of the White House. But now his super Pac hack is uncharacteristically telling the truth about the Republican Party.

Donald Trump, Republican, GOP

RELATED: Cowardly Republican Party to Require Their Presidential Candidates to Boycott 2024 Debates

Despite Trump’s record of deceit, every now and again someone in the Trump realm inadvertently allows a morsel of truth to escape into the wild. And on Friday morning the culprit was Trump’s official mouthpiece (and Twitter ban defying spokes-shill), Liz Harrington. In one of her regular appearances on the shamelessly Trump-fluffing One America News Network (OAN), Harrington was fed the softest of balls by OAN’s Natalie Harp (video below):

“The Republican Party isn’t the establishment party anymore. It’s the people’s party. They’re determining the direction of the party in terms of legislation, America First. That’s not what they’re used to. And yet somehow they think that they can point out the Cheneys and the Bushs. Don’t they realize we all rejected that during the primaries in 2016?”

Let’s just set aside the nonsense that the party that gets the most financial and institutional support from corporations and wealthy elites can be portrayed as “the people’s party.” And it is those one-percenters who have always determined the party’s direction. It is, however, notable that Harp admits her inclusion in the Trump Cult saying that WE all ejected that during the primaries in 2016.” But it was Harrington’s response that let the cat out of the hag:

“They [Republicans] all been exposed for the frauds that they are. They’re as fraudulent as the last election. And the people have seen through that and they want the real thing. They don’t want another fake substitute, another fake election where there’s really no difference between the two candidates on the ballot. They might say they are a different party, but the end result, they’re not the same. The Cheneys of the world, the Pelosis of the world, the McConnells, they all want endless wars. They all want open borders. They all want bad trade deals for the United States. They do not care about our sovereignty. They do not care about our jobs. And they can pretend to care about issues of the day.”

And there you have it. Directly from the horse’s mouth. Trump’s tweet-meister reveals that the Republican Party is full of warmongering, immigrant-bashing, economy-destroying “frauds.” Democrats and most rational Americans have known that for years (decades?). But it’s good to hear them confess their corruption publicly.

Trump himself has emerged as the most anti-Republican Republican in the party’s history. His hostility toward leaders of the Party such as Mitch McConnell, whom he now calls the “broken old crow,” is typical of his lust for vengeance against anyone showing signs of dwindling devotion. Trump has even demanded that his cult disciples refrain from donating to the GOP, and place their offerings on his plate instead. “No more money for RINOS,” Trump decreed, “Send your donation to [his] Save America PAC.”

This might seem like good news for Democrats. With Trump bashing the GOP and trying to intercept their donations, it should benefit Democratic candidates in the upcoming midterm elections. And it probably will, to a degree. However, Trump’s influence appears to be waning within the Republican world. The most recent party financial disclosure shows that the GOP raised $140 million in 2021. Which is still less than the $146 million Democrats raised. But it shows that GOP donors aren’t heeding Trump’s order to send their funds to him.

RELATED: Trump Orders His Cult To ‘Drop Off of Twitter’ and Calls For It To Be Outlawed

You know Trump’s gotta hate the fact that people are ignoring his orders. Perhaps that’s why he dispatched Harrington to OAN to throw more mud at his fellow Republicans. Because, in the end, all Trump cares about is how much money and adoration he can collect from his dimwitted followers. The more he sees those measures decline, the more panicked and incoherent he will become. And by that standard, he is already pretty far gone.

Rudy Giuliani and OAN Sued Over Election Fraud Lies. What About Trump and Fox News?

As we approach the new year, the soap opera featuring Donald Trump and his “Big Lie” that the 2020 presidential election was “rigged” continues unabated into its second insufferable season. And the cast of characters are thrust into evermore melodramatic scenarios as their nefarious acts are revealed to weary viewers yearning for the climax when they are all marched into prison.

Rudy Giuliani, Donald Trump

The latest wrinkle in this script was played out Thursday with the news that Trump’s personal attorney, Rudy Giuliani, and his propaganda mouthpiece, One America News (OAN), are being sued by two of the victims of Trump’s election deceptions. According to Politico

“Two former Georgia election workers are suing Trump adviser Rudy Giuliani, One America News Network and several of the network’s top executives for pushing a series of debunked conspiracy theories about the workers’ role in the 2020 election that they said put them in physical danger and threatened their livelihoods.

“Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss, her daughter, worked as poll workers counting ballots at State Farm Arena in Fulton County, Ga., during the November 2020 election. […] ‘As a result of their vital service, Ms. Freeman and Ms. Moss have become the objects of vitriol, threats, and harassment,’ they said in Thursday’s complaint, filed in U.S. District Court in Washington.”

Freeman and Moss were falsely accused by right-wing hacks of stuffing fake ballots into the election counting process. However, a fact-check at the time thoroughly debunked the sloppy and dishonest claims. Nevertheless, as Politico noted…

“Trump and his allies remained obsessed with the state, and with the lies they have spread about the election workers in Georgia. Trump mentioned Freeman by name in the now-infamous call he had with Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger in early January, where he tried to convince the election official to overturn his loss in the state.”

Trump’s Twitter ban defying spokes-shill, Liz Harrington, is still disgorging these lies. After Raffensperger posted an article that touted the accuracy of Georgia’s elections, Harrington sarcastically replied that it was “like Philly saying they’re the safest city in the country with the lowest murder rate.” But it was nothing like that at all. It wasn’t Raffensperger who assessed Georgia’s election efficiency. It was the ultra-conservative Heritage Foundation. Also, Harrington even got the info about Philadelphia wrong. It isn’t even in the top ten of cities with the highest murder rate.

All of this raises the question as to why Trump hasn’t been named in the lawsuit by Freeman and Moss. He has been relentlessly spewing accusations against the poll workers with no basis whatsoever. And his Ministry of Disinformation (aka Fox News) has been backing him up the whole time. In fact, Fox News has already been named as a defendant in billion dollar lawsuits filed by voting systems companies Dominion and Smartmatic.

Trump and Fox News have done real harm to individuals, companies, and the nation, with their flagrant and self-serving campaign of deliberate falsehoods. And they must be held accountable for that. The victims of their malicious mendacity have every right to be compensated for the damage done. And as these cases wind their way through the justice system, hopefully all of the evildoers responsible will be made to pay up – civilly and criminally. And first among them should be Trump and Fox News.

SAVE THE DATE: MyPillow Pinhead Mike Lindell is Organizing a Protest Against Fox News

This holiday season Americans will be busy visiting with friends and family and planning festivities for Christmas and New Year’s. It is a season full of joy and comradery and hope. But Mike Lindell, the MyPillow mogul who has become Donald Trump’s foremost election fraud flouting flunky, would like you all to keep open some time for another of his screwball circus acts.

Donald Trump, Mike Lindell, MyPillow

Lindell has announced that he is organizing a public protest against Trump’s Ministry of Disinformation, Fox News:

“We are going to do something out in front of Fox News, I think we should have – you know, if people want to go down there, maybe we should give out Frank Speech signs. [Fox News is] a big part of our country being taken from us.”

Based on the record of abject failure of Lindell’s previous media events, this demonstration promises to be an affair to dismember. It will rank up there with his “Absolute Proof” crocumentary, wherein he declared that he would provide irrefutable evidence that Trump won the election. His presentation was a spectacle of hyperventilating harangues and hothead hyperbole. The only thing it was missing was the “proof” part. Although it did earn him a hysterical disclaimer from OAN prior to airing it, and a place in the billion dollar defamation lawsuit by Dominion Voting Systems.

Lindell also staged a “cyber symposium” that likewise guaranteed confirmation of election fraud. But this event was so preposterous that even Fox News refused to accept advertising for it. As a result, Lindell pulled all of his ads from Fox. Which must have upset Tucker Carlson where MyPillow was his biggest – and pretty much last – advertiser.

Lindell isn’t the only right-winger who is angry with Fox News. Trump has been bashing them regularly, despite continuing to appear with devoted Trump-fluffers like Jeanine Pirro, Sean Hannity, Maria Bartiromo, Laura Ingraham, and Mark Levin. And with the release of Tucker Carlson’s horrifically anti-American diatribe, “Patriot Purge,” – that defends the violent January 6th StormTrumper riots in Washington, D.C. – many staunchly conservative Republicans, and even Fox News staffers, are distancing themselves from the network. NPR is reporting that…

[Fox anchors] Bret Baier and Chris Wallace, shared their objections with Fox News Media CEO Suzanne Scott and its president of news, Jay Wallace. Those objections rose to Lachlan Murdoch, the chairman and CEO of the network’s parent company.”

None of the Fox executives responded to NPR’s request for comments. However, two longtime Fox contributors, Steven Hayes and Jonah Goldberg, did respond. They just resigned citing Carlson’s pro-insurrection piece as the last straw. And their resignations touched off a wave of support from other Fox regulars.:

  • Liz Cheney: “Thank you @stephenfhayes and @JonahDispatch for standing up for truth and calling out dangerous lies.”
  • Charlie Sykes: “Good.”
  • Adam Kinzinger: “This…. Leading by example. Nice job”
  • Bill Kristol: “Kudos to @stephenfhayes and @JonahDispatch for standing up to Fox, yelling Stop, at a time when few other conservatives are inclined to do so.”
  • Stuart Stevens: “Until @FoxNews commits itself to journalism, anyone who cares about democracy shouldn’t work there or advertise. Doesn’t really hold up to say ‘I support a channel because not every show is a racist attack on democracy, just the most popular'”

This exodus from Fox News may seem like a positive development that could impact their future editorial mission. But don’t count on it. The honchos at Fox don’t appear the least bit interested in slanting back toward sanity and/or reality. And CNN’s Jim Acosta articulated that in a succinct assessment of the state of Fox News:

UPDATE: The Fox News protest was, predictably, a total bust that drew about dozen Lindell flunkies.

SURPRISE! Those Who Trust Fox News, Newsmax, and OAN Believe the Most COVID Misinformation

From the first days of the COVID pandemic in America, Fox News has sought to downplay its severity. They disparaged mitigation efforts such as wearing masks and social distancing. They promoted quack cures such as bleach injections and horse dewormner. And they discouraged people from protecting themselves and others by getting vaccinated. They have, in effect, turned the viral crisis into the Fox News Pandemic.

Fox News, Fake News

A new study by the Kaiser Family Foundation has revealed further confirmation of the devastating damage that Fox News and other right-wing media have wrought on the American people:

The study asked respondents whether they believed a set of known falsehoods about the coronavirus. They included that…

  • The government is exaggerating the number of COVID-19 deaths
  • Pregnant women should not get the COVID-19 vaccine
  • Deaths due to the COVID-19 vaccine are being intentionally hidden by the government
  • The COVID-19 vaccines have been shown to cause infertility
  • Ivermectin is a safe and effective treatment for COVID-19
  • You can get COVID-19 from the vaccine
  • The COVID-19 vaccines contain a microchip
  • The COVID-19 vaccines can change your DNA.

Not surprisingly, three times as many Republicans (46%) believe four or more of the false statements than Democrats (14%). And the groups most likely to believe the most misinformation are viewers of Fox News (36%), One America News (37%), and Newsmax (46%).

What’s more, the study found that Democrats trust COVID information from a broad variety of news sources including local TV (66%), network news (72%), CNN (65%), MSNBC (56%), and NPR (51%). Republicans, on the other hand, have trust that is almost entirely limited to Fox News (49%). And consumers of conservative news sources generally are far more likely to believe the most misinformation. While viewers who don’t believe any of the false statements is about 40% for CNN, MSNBC, network news, and NPR, that drops to 20% for OAN, 14% for Newsmax, and only 12% of Fox News viewers believe none of the blatant falsehoods.

The findings in the Kaiser study are closely aligned with related studies that show that those who rely on Fox News for information are significantly more at risk for contracting COVID than those who do not. It’s why almost 40% of Republican adults remain unvaccinated, compared with about 10% of Democratic adults.

Trusting Fox News, therefore, is literally dangerous to your health, as well as that of your family, your community, and your nation. And that’s true with respect to COVID, as well as the lies Fox tells about climate change, education, election fraud, the economy, healthcare, and any other issue that impacts the lives of the American people. The only thing that Fox News is interested in is advancing its agenda of greed and evangelical conservatism. No matter how many people are harmed.

Newsmax and OAN Added to Smartmatic’s Billion Dollar Lawsuit for Pushing Trump’s ‘Big Lie’

The fallout from Donald Trump’s relentless crusade to spin his humiliating loss to Joe Biden as a “rigged” election continues to deliver consequences to those aiding and abetting its dissemination. It has already resulted in a multibillion dollar defamation lawsuit by Dominion Voting Systems against Fox News, Trump attorneys Rudy Giuliani and Sidney Powell, as well as Mike Lindell, the infamous MyPillow Guy.

Donald Trump, Fox News, Fake

Dominion’s lawsuit wasn’t the only one seeking to hold Trump’s “Big Lie” spreaders accountable for their reckless slander. Earlier this year Smartmatic, a voting software company, filed a similar lawsuit against Fox News, along with their accomplices Lou Dobbs, Maria Bartiromo, and Jeanine Pirro. Their filing is a thrilling must read that outlines the depravity Fox & Company. And now Smartmatic has invited more guests to their legal party. CNN is reporting that Smartmatic “is now adding Newsmax and One America News Network to the list of defendants.” Their filing charges that…

“Despite claims to provide viewers with honest, unbiased reporting, these outlets victimized Smartmatic by spreading false information about the company following last year’s election, all in their efforts to increase viewership and revenue.” [and that…]

“The lawsuit charged that Newsmax ‘published dozens of reports indicating that Smartmatic participated in a criminal conspiracy to rig and steal the 2020 U.S. election and that its technology and software were used to switch votes from former President Trump to now President Biden.'” [and that…]

“The first time it happened could be a mistake. The second, third, fourth and fiftieth times it happened were intentional choices,” the lawyers wrote. “OANN had every opportunity to do the right thing after the 2020 election for President and Vice President of the United States. It could have reported the truth. Instead, OANN chose to do the wrong thing every time. It reported a lie.”

There has been some blowback suffered by the “Big Lie” propagandists. Fox News has had to alter their programming to avoid further legal liability. And also here. Trump’s lead libelist, Rudy Giuliani, has been banned from Fox News. Nevertheless, Trump is still trying to bully Fox into reporting his election falsehoods. Meanwhile, Trump is slobbering all over OAN for sucking up to him:

“You guys are amazing,” he drooled. “So many people are watching what you’re doing. The election fraud of 2020 is the single biggest thing they want to watch, and other networks don’t put it on because they’re afraid to put it on.”

However, even OAN has exhibited some nervousness about stepping out too far onto Trump’s limp limb. In February they ran a hysterical disclaimer prior to airing a crockumentary by Lindell that promised to provide “Absolute Proof” of voter fraud (It didn’t).

It will be interesting to see how they behave now that Smartmatic has named them in their lawsuit. But we can easily predict how Trump will behave. He has always been – and is now – incapable of rising above his infantile and hostile tendencies. So, unfortunately, it will be more of the same going forward. And hopefully the future will see Trump himself added to the list of defendants.

UPDATE 1/20/2022: MyPillow guy, Mike Lindell is now also being sued by Smartmatic for defamation.

UPDATE 4/17/2024: Smartmatic settled with OAN in a confidential agreement that ended the litigation.
